The village is a collection of buildings relocated from other areas, and they are dedicated to types of craftsmanship. There are SO many areas in the buildings to explore! They have woodworking, ceramics, glassworks, printing, signage, weaving, blacksmithing, and other crafts. The crew even built a replica of the hearse that carried Lincoln's coffin for the memorial trip from DC to Springfield, 150 years later. They also hand-crafted a redwood table for President Clinton's Presidential Library. Because the buildings are working sites, visitors must be careful as they walk through each area. Thankfully, all the walkways are of sturdy recent construction--even the catwalk on the second floor of the main building. Tours are led by knowledgeable guides, and visitors may have the opportunity to see craftsmen at work; on our visit, there was a gentleman working on a sign for a local ballpark. He stopped what he was doing and talked through the process of converting an artist's sketch to a finished, billboard-sized sign. It was fascinating to see! The grounds are lovely and have views of Humboldt Bay from the top of the rise. There are gardens planted in various sites around the village, and it is very pretty in the spring. For a unique experience of immersion into craftworks, I definitely recommend a visit to The Blue Ox!

After a great (pre-ordered) lunch back at camp, we went to Fern Creek Canyon for a walk. The whole day was absolutely spectacular. Grant taught us so much, with a perfect flow. We were safe, but enough ruggedness and adventure to satisfy the boys and a great sense of humor kept things light. He also shared so many great tips for the rest of our journey. Honestly, it felt like we were visiting an old friend after the first 20 minutes. He even joined us for a few minutes to show us the very best spot for wild blackberry picking at the end of the day. Definitely a highlight of our trip. We did many hikes on our own on other days, but having Grant to guide and teach us was no comparison to what we left with on this special day. I'm a nature nerd so having someone experienced like her to teach us about the ferns and the biodiversity of Fern Canyon was such a neat experience. The roads are narrow and curvy to the canyon so it was a nice treat to just sit back and have someone else do the driving on our long road trip. She also educated us about the unique partnership between Rising Redwoods and the National Park System. An added bonus was seeing three banana slugs on our tour! The cashier did open the door and only smiled when I told her that we had just driven 5.5 hours to go to shop at Holly Yashi. She kept saying "I understand ". No she doesn't!! And to make it worse the store is closed on Sundays and Mondays. Shopping at Holly Yashi is just about the only thing to do in this town. Grrrrr!

As we were the only ones on the tour that day, they adjusted to our every need. For example: *We're running late. No problem! *We're towing a trailer and parking can be a challenge. No problem! We'll hold a spot for you. *We have two late-70's seniors who haven't ridden bicycles in over 20 years. No Problem! We've got an electric tricycle for one and a lighter bike for the other. *We want to get back earlier to make it to our next destination. No problem! We can turn around and return whenever you want. Also, they give you exactly what is needed to paddle in Trinidad so you remain warm & comfy. I was so impressed with our guides, Nick and Alex, and their local knowledge of seabirds, marine mammals, and intertidal species. Whales are cool, but there are also a lot of other really cool animals & birds in Trinidad Bay. And these guides know just where to take you. They were not afraid to take us into a little rougher waters, when we asked them to, likely because they are so skilled and experienced. I also really appreciated all of the paddling guidance they provided making sure I was using my core/legs more than my arms. I was with a very large group and the guides handled everything with such class and professionalism. It is a step above any outfitter I've ever paddled with. We are really lucky to have them in Trinidad to help us access some of the most fantastic coastline along the California coast. They also do a great job interpreting the California Coastal National Monument! All of those rocks and islands are part of a statewide national monument that runs from the Oregon border south to Mexico! Wow! What a treasure.
