FANTASTIC!!!! If you can use them, DO!!!!! We used Blue Plate for our September, 2015 wedding at University of Chicago. From start to finish, Blue Plate and Lauren Plue were AWESOME! Lauren is an absolute DREAM to work with (I wish I could clone her!) and the food was excellent! We had a cocktail hour in the courtyard at Ida Noyes Hall and then a two station buffet dinner. Despite the fact that it was SUPER hot that day (94+), Lauren and her crew came through for us like the champs they are! The cocktail party had a lemonade/water station, 2 bars, and passed hors d' oeuvres. Everyone RAVED about how beautiful the courtyard was with the tables, chairs, linens, and centerpieces! All of this was planned by Lauren, my husband, and I but executed solely by Lauren and her amazing crew! The servers wore smiles and were there to help make everyone as comfortable as possible. We are so very grateful for the small acts of kindness we heard about after the wedding. The dinner featured a themed buffet on each side of the room. Everything was served at appropriate temperature, which was no small task since the air conditioning was not working properly and it was quite toasty in the hall. The set-up was spectacular and the table settings were THE ABSOLUTE PRETTIEST my husband and I have ever seen! We worked with Lauren extensively to get exactly what we wanted and Lauren delivered all that was promised and more! She's OUTSTANDING!!!! And her crew worked tirelessly in less than desirable conditions to do what they could for us. There was no wedding cake but a dessert bar with selected tasty treats. Lauren and her team set this up just perfectly. It incorporated the desserts prepared by Blue Plate along with outside treats my husband and I provided. It was beautiful and perfect (until the chocolate melted which was NOT Blue Plate's fault!). The only recommendations I would make for improvement (and believe me they are MINOR): 1. Have a sign that says what is being served on each buffet (I really should have thought of this but it never quite come into my consciousness. Some guests were confused as to whether both buffets were serving the same food or different. We had a menu at each guest setting, but it did not indicate where each item could be found). 2. Insist that the bride and groom use their designated server. My husband and I both felt that it was too weird for us to have someone else make our plates when we were asking all of our guests were making their own. As a result, I made it up to the buffet, but never got to actually make a plate. In retrospect, it would have been better if I had used the designated server. Since I didn't use her at the beginning, she was just never around later when I could have really used her assistance (for things like a glass of water, or something else to drink). I don't really think it was her fault as she was taking her lead from me. BOTTOM LINE: I would not hesitate to use Lauren Plue, or Blue Plate in the future. I love them! If I had to do it all over again, I would replace several vendors (wedding coordinator, photographer, venue) but I would NEVER replace Lauren or Blue Plate!!!! We used Blue Plate for our wedding in August, 2011. The entire process from start to finish of working with them was fantastic - Ken in particular is an amazing person to work with. Blue Plate did so many things to help make the day really special - when one set of parents who does not live in Chicago came to visit, they agreed to another private tasting for all of us, even though my husband and I had already had our formal tasting. They worked with us to create a menu that we loved - there was never the feeling that they forced us to do anything. Leading up to the wedding day, Ken was extremely responsive to our last minute requests (adding in meals, vegetarian requests, etc), and the day of was executed perfectly. The food was absolutely amazing - we really have nothing but positive things to say about working with Blue Plate. Blue Plate was unbelievable for our 4/24 wedding at the Newberry Library. Melissa Samek and Haley had incredible attention to detail. Blue Plate was the caterer for our wedding this month at the River East Art Center. Start to finish, both the Blue Plate staff was incredibly professional, knowledgeable, and helpful. They assigned Husband and I our own waiter, so I never had to go to a bar, or find hors d'ouvres. Food was fantastic. FANTASTIC. Everyone was raving about it, and we have been getting e-mails and fb messages about it non-stop. People loved our late night bites - mini choc milk shakes & chicago hot dogs. Linens were gorgeous - we kept getting compliments on how soft the napkins were - I didn't actually see them before the wedding, so that was nice! The only negative for some people would be the price - it can get pricey fast (depending on selections of course) but with them, you really are getting what you pay for. I was married a few weeks ago, and we used Blue Plate as our caterer. Lauren P was our main contact there. I cannot say enough great things about them. We had used them for one other event, so reached out when we became engaged. They suggested several venues to us, and we ended up going with one of their favorites, which worked out perfectly. We had a specific idea in mind... food stations and lounge seating with finger and fork friendly food. They gave us tons of options and came up with the perfect arrangement for that day. Lauren spent many hours with us and emails, and made us feel very confident in our choice. Day of... Blue Plate set up everything, created great furniture arrangements and moved our flowers around... it was just perfect. Great communication with all vendors, great delivery, service, attitude. We bought our alcohol and Binnys but had BP serve.. it was perfect. It didn't seem like there were every any lines anywhere. And around ten they served late night bites of mini Chicago dogs. We didn't just automatically go with BP because we had used them. We received estimates from a few others that we were recommended. BPs pricing was great.. around the same as other caterers with well established reputations, and their customer service before we had even signed the contract was outstanding. I used Blue Plate for my November wedding at the Chicago History Museum. Of course the food was so AMAZING and unique! I also had a few requests for items that I wanted on a sweet table, which they were able to execute. It was wonderful working with Elinor. She was so helpful getting me everything I needed, responding to emails quickly, creating time line for the night so that everything ran smoothly. They assigned a staff member to wait on only us (as the bride and groom). He was so great! I never visited the bar, yet always had a drink, and he set aside hors d'oeuvres for us so we could be sure to get one of each. Big disappointment with the "cobia" that was served at the reception. Actually we aren't sure that's what was served. Tasted like halibut which was a lower priced option. I worked with Elinor to cater my August 2013 wedding and I would HIGHLY recommend Blue Plate for any bride. In our selection of the 3 vendors that our venue allowed, Blue Plate was the most responsive, professional, and moderately priced. After signing with Elinor, I could not have been more pleased with her responsiveness, her patience, and the overall level of customer service that she delivered. For example, Elinor definitely went the extra mile by bringing us complimentary bottles of wines (twice!) when we were deciding which level to select for the event. During the wedding, my husband and I had our personal waiter to attend to us, and though I don't think we fully took advantage of it, it was great to know that someone was there to help us should we need anything. The food was delivered hot and in a timely manner to our 200+ guests and there was never a long line at the bar given how efficient the bar tenders were. Given that our wedding coordinator had planned to leave before our send off, Elinor's staff stepped in and made sure that the last few minutes went off without a hitch. Blue Plate catered my daughter's wedding at Café Brauer over Memorial Day weekend. My wife, daughter and I could not be happier. Our experience started at our tasting. We were given a long list of appetizers to taste test. In addition to our selections, our representative recommended a couple of his favorites. During the tasting we chose six appetizers, two of them being his recommendations. I would strongly recommend the lollipop lamb chops -- people are still talking about them. As you can see in the Yelp photos, the presentation of appetizers is second to none -- a great first impression for guests. We chose to have a single entre for non-vegetarians. This decision and the presence of their experienced wait staff allowed Blue Plate to serve 180 people more efficiently. There was no lag in service -- every table was served at nearly the same time. We had a vegetarian option, grilled cauliflower "steaks". I was uncertain about that option, until I tasted it. Despite not being a vegetarian, I considered ordering the cauliflower myself -- it was that good. On three separate occasions, I was told by guests that the meal was the best wedding meal that they had ever eaten. I agree. The meal? Airline chicken (poorest marketing name ever! However, the term refers to the cut of the meat which displays beautifully, not that it is served by the airlines). Tender, flavorful, and beautifully displayed. The bride and groom sat at a "sweetheart" table. They were treated like royalty. At least one person was assigned to meet their every need. On a hot summer-like night, the bride was pleased that her water glass was full every time she left the dance floor. Also, Blue Plate had reserved each appetizer for the bride and groom when they returned from taking pictures -- a nice and unexpected touch. As you can see from this review, my family was extremely satisfied with Blue Plate. Service, quality, and attention to detail were all exceptional. read more

Andrea was amazing! We had a 2 day event. Our lunch caterer for the 2nd day fell through and we needed a last minute replacement. I literally was on the phone and confirmed the order with Andrea at 2pm on the dot to get the order placed in time for the next day. We recently had Blue Plate cater our wedding. I can't imagine anyone being able to compete with their quality of service , professionalism and fabulous food. My wife and I wanted our reception to be an intimate event held at our home with 50-60 guests. Missy Wright was a our consultant at BP that helped us plan the menu and the service. She was so very pleasant and gave us options and ideas that demonstrated she had listened to what we asked and she was able to provide all the specifics to meet our needs. Missy knows her business and was able to help us with some modifications and tweeks to our plans and menu, making suggestions and adding details that made the event very special. She also hosted our tasting and helped us create a menu that our guests will be talking about for some time. My family and many of my friends are foodies. Some of which are in the restaurant business. We've had good, we know great and we are always looking for the best in a culinary experience. We found it with Blue Plate. On this subject I can and will probably write a separate review. So to summarize, the appetizers were all scrumptious, artful and presented with elegance. The guests quickly took notice and conversations about the recipes and food ideas were being discussed. The main course was Dee-licious and presented beautifully. All the flavors were not only spot on but paired well with the other food choices. When desert was served, our guests could not help but join with the foodies to talk about the success of the service that BP provided. So back to those services. The day of the reception we met with Antonietta the event supervisor. She was a miracle worker. The threat of bad weather had shifted our thoughts from an outside event to inside. So we had already prepped ourselves and our home for this change. Antonietta assured us the current weather was not a factor and that we should stay with our original plans and if the weather changed she would move the service inside. With the help of Pablo the bartender , they transformed our backyard into a wonderfully warm and inviting reception. The tables, chairs, dining area and of course the bar were formally dressed and prepared to handle our guests before we knew they had started. They had used space in our yard we never knew we had. The weather never became a factor and all of our guests were so comfortable with the arrangements made outside, no one sat in the house during the entire event. With Antonietta running the show and Pablo keeping our guests comfortable and happy , my wife and I were free to enjoy our special day with our family and friends. Blue Plate came through for us beyond our expectations. I would highly recommend them for any event. They are able to provide a catered experience you would only expect while seated at a fine dining restaurant. They were just OK. The planning process with the representative was just ok. More than once, she forgot something I'd already decided or provided to her. She didn't offer much help when asked for suggestions for our holiday house party of 20. So, I had to create the menu myself. From there, the food arrived on time the day of the party, and set up was easy (they did it). However, the 3 stars also comes from the quality of the food. We ordered a ton of variety. The tea sandwiches were ok, but the chicken meatballs were cold and dried out to the point that I needed to drink something to get them down or I'd choke. The coconut shrimp was also lukewarm and dried out. The lamb I'm told wasn't good either. The desserts were good. But how wrong can you go with chocolate and cupcakes? You'd have to be pretty bad to screw that up. For over $1,000, their portions were not what we were promised. Quality and Quantity were lacking severely. Unfortunately, we won't use them at our next party. read more

Out of our entire wedding, we were most disappointed with our caterer, which was a huge let down. Despite guidance from others that Blue Plate would not be the best choice for a wedding, we went ahead and booked them after having a great tasting and an impressive sales person. However, we found that the team was highly unresponsive as soon as we signed our contract, and the day-of execution was poor. I had 3 other professional event planners at my wedding as guests, and, when asked, all three expressed how poorly they thought the execution of the event was. All three also agreed they would not use Blue Plate in the future, based on our experience (and two had used them previously for corporate events). Our food was cold when served at the reception, two tables (including the table with my elderly family members) did not receive their protein servings, the timing of the delivery of food was WAY off (some tables were not served until 45 minutes after others...and our event was small - just 150 people) and the bartenders were not overseen well. I wouldn't say that the caterers ruined our night; however after the fact we felt we really did not get what we paid for. I will say that Blue Plate did give us a 20% discount on the service portion of our final payment, but for our wedding we really just wanted a good experience. We were willing to pay for it, but it did not happen. I would NOT recommend Blue Plate to anyone looking to have them cater their wedding. read more

Blue Plate did an amazing job on our wedding at Cafe Brauer for 200 people! When Ken called me and wanted to have a sit-down to discuss my tastes and build the menu, I was overwhelmed with details, did not think it was necessary, and reluctant (although I never admitted this!). However, it was a GREAT idea because despite that I feel like I know little about food, when asked what my favorite fish or meat preparation would be at a restaurant, even I can do that! And we did, within a reasonable budget. We picked something BluePlate had never prepared before (Chilean Sea Bass w a Miso Glaze) and they were able to pull it off perfectly from the kitchen at Cafe Brauer for so many people. We also served a soup/salad combo (it was a chilly fall night), sides that we loved, appetizers that we loved (not messy, unique, delicious flavors), and passed desserts that were whimsical and unique. It was actually so fun to create the menu because when people complimented the food afterward, I felt like I had something to do with it! The service was fantastic, fast, and attentive. They had a glass of water & our favorite cocktails waiting when we arrived and literally had someone following us around at appetizers (when most brides say they can't get a drink or move through the crowd) to refresh my drink or to offer me appetizers or even to take away my used napkins! The food was served quickly, presented beautifully, and piping hot (something my mom was concerned about). Ken & his staff knew Cafe Brauer so well, worked perfectly with the other vendors, thought of things I would have completely forgotten, and was watching out for little details that everyone noticed. The food here is amazing, and they have fantastic customer service. We considered them for our wedding, and the person we worked with was great. The food presentations were beautiful, the service was good, and overall we would have loved to have had them, but the prices were a bit high for our budget. They did, however, work with us to get closer to our final number and were open to different ideas in adjusting the price, but we couldn't get close enough to make it work for us. We had two tastings to decide on our final menu (both free of charge) and one was with my husband's and my entire family (6 extra people)! She was super creative in coming up with special items to pay tribute to our South Carolina and Maryland backgrounds and our guests RAVED about everything - especially the oyster shooters! I consider myself a pretty type A person but Kristin had me beat! She helped us make and spend extra time on decisions that were important to us (aka FOOD) while advising us on easy ways to save money on things we didn't care as much about (plates, tableware, linens, etc). My husband and I worked with Elinor at Blue Plate to plan the menu for our October wedding, and we could not have been more satisfied with our choice. Elinor was an absolute joy to work with--very responsive to any questions or suggestions I had and just a total sweetheart. Attending the catering tasting was one of my favorite parts of wedding planning for sure--Blue Plate has a special tasting room that they decorate with your wedding colors so that you get a real taste of what your wedding would be like. And the food... oh my gosh, so good. We were looking for a mix of traditional and modern--Blue Plate's salads and mains are delicious and well executed, and their appetizers are so fun and whimsical. After tasting so many wonderful dishes, it was hard to narrow it down. We decided on tomato soup in shot glasses with mini grilled cheese sandwiches, a play on "steak and eggs," a play on "surf and turf" with lobster and filet, BBQ duck tostadas, steak and blue cheese quesadillas, and a spoonful of sweet potato/bacon/marshmallow/maple amazingness for hors d'oeuvres and a roasted pear, blue cheese, candied walnut, thyme/apple cider vinaigrette salad. Our main course was a pumpkin seed crusted chicken breast with wilted spinach and butternut squash gnocchi--perfect for an autumn wedding and way better than your standard dried-out wedding chicken breast. Let me start by saying that I planned my wedding in a very short period of time by most standards. I had been struggling with the "preferred" caterer that my venue recommended. Finally, with only a week to go, I decided I had to find a different caterer. I remembered speaking to Rachel at Blue Plate when I was at the beginning stages of planning, before I was persuaded to go with the venue's recommendation. In a state of panic, I dialed the number and THANK GOD, Rachel answered the phone and my prayers. I explained the entire situation from beginning to end and then held my breath, waiting for her to say that it was too last minute. Instead, she was so understanding and sweet. She immediately calmed me down and put me at ease. I instantly knew that no other caterer would do. I HAD to use Blue Plate. So even though, I was on a very strict budget and we only had ONE WEEK and I was a nervous wreck, Rachel said that it would be no problem for her to help me. I explained the wedding theme and a general idea of what I wanted. Within an hour of getting off the phone, she had emailed me some ideas and a sample menu-and it was exactly what I wanted! She totally "got it". Rachel took all of the stress of last minute planning off my shoulders and I had so much confidence in her that I barely even thought about it after our first few emails. She was very respectful of my budget and made sure to stay below the amount I told her-there were no surprises or added on charges at all. The menu was ideal-she made sure there were plenty of fun options and kept in mind my vegan/vegetarian guests too. On the day of my wedding, Rachel and her staff got there early and were organized and efficient. She was very involved and supportive. I felt like she would have done anything to make sure my day was perfect. The set up was lovely and everything was exactly what I hoped for. The bartender was perfect-very professional but also very friendly. The waiter, Nicholas, was delightful! He was a ray of sunshine-so attentive to every guest and fun be around. He was our only waiter but he was everywhere at all times and he made sure my husband and I got to eat everything and he made sure every guest was taken care of. All of my friends LOVED him and it really felt like he enjoyed being there, which I think is so important. He really made me feel special, too. And the chef did an amazing job! The food was devoured! It looked amazing and tasted even better. Everyone raved about the food all night long. It was better than I could have even expected. Everyone went above and beyond and I could not be more pleased with the end result. It's been over a week and my friends are still talking about everything. I absolutely cannot recommend Blue Pate strongly enough. They will always be the first place I call for any future catering needs. read more

Working with Blue Plate was simply one of the best decisions we made for our wedding. Rachel was our primary contact and she was responsive, thorough, and provided us great guidance throughout the entire wedding planning process. My husband (fiancé at the time) and I did 3 tastings with local Chicago caterers before choosing one for our September wedding at the Chicago History Museum, and Blue Plate's was by far the most comprehensive and on target with what we were looking for. The staff had lots of great suggestions to make the diverse palates of everyone at our wedding happy, and the food turned out delicious! (Plus, we had a dedicated server to make sure we were able to eat it!!) Throughout the planning process, Laura and her team were responsive and patient with our changing vision for the meal and decor, and we couldn't have been more amazed with the result. They even made wonderful caramel apple favors (rolled in fun coatings... Oreos, pistachios, caramel corn, or Snickers!) for our guests to take home. I am definitely detail-obsessed, and on the day of our wedding Blue Plate had everything covered- we didn't worry about a thing! Our experience working with Blue Plate from start to finish has been exceptional. From guiding us through our choices for the event, the tasting and then the "big event" was spot on. We had an absolutely wonderful experience working with Elinor Brown for our September 2016 wedding at the Rookery in downtown Chicago. First off, the food was amazing and we received tons of compliments from our guests on how the food at our wedding was the best 'wedding food' they have ever had. From the appetizers, to the dinner stations and the bar set-ups, it was all top notch quality and service was great. Regarding planning, from the get-go Elinor was responsive, helpful, easy to work with, honest and always was willing to put in extra effort in order to help guide us through the planning process. Elinor worked as both our caterer and venue liaison, and though we were a bit worried about the logistics in the beginning of the planning process, she made sure everything went smoothly, and our wedding day turned out better than we could have ever imagined. We absolutely loved working with Elinor at Blue Plate for a recent catering order for the marathon. We were only feeding 8-10 people, but Elinor was so professional and thorough. She recommended the perfect dishes (Campanelle with Grilled Chicken, garlic bread, and Apple and Fig Salad) and took care of the order quickly. Very disappointed in their lack of NO service. Inquired them about catering my birthday party for 20 people and I never even got a response from them. Pretty disappointed despite the good reviews. It's too bad because I was hoping to use them for my son's first birthday party for 100-130 people, but looks like I won't be doing that as well read more

Blue Plate did everything but the food at my wedding. I'm vegan so I wanted the food to come from a particular vegan restaurant. Laura from Blue Plate was more than accommodating with this request (she says they do this all the time for weddings with specialty food, like Indian weddings). Blue Plate did all of the set-up, service, rentals, bar-tending, etc. They did a great job. The evening went flawlessly. Also, they really eased my planning process. If you're like me and you don't give a damn what china or whatever you get, you just want it to look nice, they will handle EVERYTHING for you. Of course they also accommodate super-detail-oriented brides, so you're set in either case. read more

We used Blue Plate for our daughter's wedding and I can't recommend them highly enough. Laura worked w/ us from the start; always calm and always willing to review the proposal when we had questions or found mistakes. Although she drew up initial recommendations based upon our responses to the questionnaire, she was very open and willing to play w/ ideas and differences of opinion as we progressed. The tasting was a terrific experience w/ everything being beautifully served and tasting delicious. We were worried that it wouldn't be as good at the wedding, but it all was. Food was hot, fresh, well seasoned and cooked to perfection. Appetizers included pesto shrimp on skewers, panninis (mini), lamb chops w/ sauce (finger food), pear on crostini w/ cheese and tri colored gazpacho. Each one was delicious and guests loved the gazpacho. Dinner included the arrugula salad w/ fruit and choice of grilled salmon, roasted thyme chicken and vegetable terrine w/ polenta. All delicious. Guests also raved about the service. The only negatives were that we had to read through each proposal carefully, as there were frequent mistakes and the basic liquor package's wine was not very good, so if you care about the wine, you pretty much have to upgrade. All in all, it was an extremely positive experience and I would unquestionably recommend Blue Plate Catering. read more

Working with Missy was one of the best decisions we made for our wedding in early October! From the tasting through the entire process she went above and beyond in ways I didn't even dream of to make sure our day was perfect. Of course the food and service was great, but we felt like we were in such great hands the entire time and we couldn't be happier with how it turned out. read more
