There are many dive shops in Cozumel, I imagine it's hard for all of them to differentiate themselves!
My 2 daughters and I went diving in Cozumel for the first time. Many of my coworkers are avid scuba divers, and several of them (including some who had hundreds of dives) recommended Blue Project, and specifically Blanca, as a great experience. One of my coworkers routinely goes to Cozumel, and only dives with Blue Project. For me, as a relatively new diver who's primarily looking for a safe and fun experience, this recommendation was worth everything. And now, I completely agree, and highly recommend the same!
First, a few words worth repeating about Cozumel: All the dive sspots are drift dives. Even though we were repeatedly told to simply let the current push you, it took us a dive or two to get comfortable with that (we kept on trying to stay in the same spot, and hence were fighting the current, expending effort and oxygen).
Also, there are over a hundred dive shops in Cozumel, all of whom take you to the same dive spots. So how do you choose?
For us, the following were critical:
- Small groups: We were three people, the total boat capacity was ~8-10 people, and there were always at least two instructors on the boat. The group ratio was excellent.
- Blanca and Nico were excellent teachers! They went over all the basics with us, and routinely spent time teaching us things. During the dives, they were extremely attentive, constantly paying attention to us, even though they were at the front leading the way. For example, one time I drifted a bit deeper than the group (I wanted to look at something more closely), even though I was a good 15' away from my limit, they noticed immediately. This made me feel very safe.
- Blanca also has a very keen sense of humor, making the whole day fun. For example, even though we were enjoying the warm weather and water temperature, Blanca always feels cold. One time, when we asked her what she thought the water temperature, without hesitation, she said "0 degrees"! All of us on the boat laughed.
- Most telling is how they handled the business aspect. Two of the three of us developed nasal congestion / clogged ears while we were on the island. While we had the dives booked well in advance, Paco and Blanca were completely flexible, and arranged a schedule that worked for all of us! They even created a dive on Friday afternoon just for us, to accommodate us (they weren't previously planning this).
Also, one of the reviews mentions that they are not a PADI shop. I'm not sure what that is all about, we got our nitrox certification with Blue Project, and were very happy with the instruction we received.
When we go back to Cozumel, I'm going to book directly with Blue Project -- in my mind, there is absolutely no need to look elsewhere. read more
