For being such a small place this little market really packs a punch! Nicest people, fresh ingredients, reasonable prices, and delicious food!! The Hunt Country Market is in a beat down old fashioned gas station store. Despite the shady appearance the sandwich shop makes delicious food but is the taste really worth the wait? Once you order your food it will take at least ten minutes (probably more) to get a sandwich. During lunch hours the small space is usually filled making you feel squished. With local wine, beef and homemade entrees in their case and always a smile on their faces, look no further than the intersection of Free Union and Garth. Was visiting the Charlottesville area for 3 days recently & of those 3 days, I visited Hunt Country Market 3 days! Partially due to the fact that it was conveniently located to the B&B I was staying at in Free Union, VA, but mostly due to the awesomely delicious food they offer! They have a freshly made sandwich menu, as well as local wines, bottled beers & grab n' go items. However, it's their weekday daily dinner specials that got me hooked! The 2 dinners I had the were the Pepper Steak & the Ham, Asparagus, Cheese Pasta Casserole. Home cooked, comforting, deliciousness! Indulged in a slice of carrot cake - my favorite & it may have been the best piece I've ever had. It was spiced just right with freshly shredded carrots & heavenly icing. I've also heard through the grape vine that the cheesecake is divine as well. This lil deli may not have the quickest meals or overly friendly service, but the quality food more than makes up for any of the slight shortcomings. read more

I am shocked to see only 1 review so far. Stopped in for quick bite and found a great selection of local wine as well as bottles of soda on real glass bottles. The soups are fresh and hearty. The sandwiches are crafted one at a time with great care. Cool names like more cowbell are just added bonus to great homemade food. The home like kitchen is in clear view and you will see the staff preparing that nights diner specials. A pure diamond in an off beat part of town. Well done Hunt country market. read more

Short and sweet review: I'm a big sandwich fan. Warren Zevon held them in pretty high favor too. I'll drive 70 miles to my favorite shop in Carytown just for a steaming hot "industrial" (Coppala's deli). So it takes some doing to get me to come back repeatedly: In the past few weeks I've been hitting Hunt's regularly for their Italian sub. It has an "unfortunate" name which, I never order it by. And, I always call ahead to ask if they have sub rolls on hand, which are fresh and slightly crusty. Nice really. The folks are fine and yes you are usually served at the register by someone south of 20 yrs old...who have always been pleasant enough to yrstrly. I've never purchased one of their prepared meals because I don't wish to go down that road and get hooked on those too. The place always smells fantastic and is always buzzing with activity. It's clear they are "working-it". Are the sandwiches exceptional? Probably not but they are IMHO the best around C,ville. Are they too expensive? A little more than $8.00 but you get a GOOD SIZED meal. Go to Littlejohn's or Jason's Deli and see what you get for that money...not near as much. Kudo's to the folks @ Hunt's...you do a good job and although you are WAY out of my way I'll keep coming back. And for those of you planning to give it a try...careful driving past the front door...it's an old gas station...people will step out of the building right into your path...easy folks, easy. read more

Drive by this place every day on the way to work and the specials on the board outside always sound delicious. Stopped in for the first time today and was impressed with the selection. Grabbed an easy and tasty sandwich to go for lunch and a frozen Shepard's pie for dinner. I'll definately be stopping by again! read more

Nice little store near the Foxfield races. For the kind of place where you'd be buying beer or wine when you otherwise would have none, the selection of beer gives you some good choices and the wine selection is surprisingly broad. Locally-made baked treats on the counter are yummy. Excellent sandwiches, vastly superior to the wimpy, thinly-filled ones with poor bread you'd find at a certain chain named after a form of underground mass transit. The baguette is wonderful, though its rugged exterior and soft interior struggled to contain the ample contents which comprise the "After the Hunt". No matter, the sandwich was delicious. Good sandwiches, but rude teens working. I was planning on stopping by this place quite often as it is in route to and from my work. Well, last time I was in there I caught a female employee aiming her phone right at me... then she took a photo (I could hear the sound as I have an iphone, too). I refrained from saying anything, as to avoid a confrontation. While waiting for my sandwich to be made, this employee's friend came in the store and soon because a loud gossip conversation about a not so pleasant issue (regarding sex health issues) about their mutual "friends." I would have preferred to not hear the conversation or have my picture taken. I no longer go in the store as I do not feel comfortable in there now! Total bummer. read more

Hunt Country is a real gem, not too far off the beaten path if you're already in Charlottesville, and worth the trip if you aren't. My boyfriend and I always hit up Hunt Country on our way to visit his brother in Free Union, and have never been disappointed by the quality or variety of the food and drinks. The cookies at the counter are insane, as is the macaroni salad (which is a surprisingly difficult dish to make well). We usually get sandwiches, but their entrees are amazing, and really well-priced. The best part is the staff, who always make you feel welcome, even when you're a moody pregnant lady half-crazed with starvation and show up ten minutes before closing. This joint is the best, for reals; I wish they'd open a second location in Richmond! read more
