I was extremely active. I exercised daily, was a competitive runner, and was always on the go. I was known as an 'Energizer Bunny'. Then- in one day- it seemed- my batteries simply ran out. (I was only in my mid forties & THOUGHT I was in great shape!) That was about 5 years ago. I became chronically ill with more symptoms than I can possibly list, with severe, debilitating fatigue. I would get so sick, I couldn't get out of bed for days at a time. I was in and out of the hospital. I could no longer do any of the activities I loved doing. It was BAD. I went from specialist to specialist of every kind. I had test after test. None of my blood work was ever 'NORMAL' but my docs didn't seem to have a problem with that. The diagnoses I DID get were all over the place. Meantime, my quality of life kept going down. I had to DRAG myself out of bed. Any activity beyond absolute necessity was out of the question for me. I went to some of the best facilities in the country, if not the world, and docs identified all of the problems I was having. But no one had a clue as to how to fix anything. Some told me it was all in my head. Yet I still had medication after medication prescribed- many with horrible side effects. I was given all types of different diagnoses' but no docs seemed to agree with one another. None of them made sense to me either! No treatments helped. My health continued to deteriorate. Since I rarely slept at night, I'd spend hours researching my symptoms to try and make SOME kind of sense of things. How could this happen to someone as 'healthy' as me??? It was during my research time that I found the Clymer Healing Center website. I read about it and then watched the short video that Dr. Neville provides explaining his own journey with CFS & AD, and his understanding of it all. There is an option to take a short quiz, ( to see if CHC can be of help to you), which I took, and the rest, as they say, is history. I was contacted by CHC the NEXT DAY. I had reached out to so many other docs/facilities prior, and they'd been DEAD ENDS, so I wasn't feeling very hopeful with CHC at first. However, after speaking with Dr. Nevilles patient coordinator, and then with Dr. Neville himself, I FINALLY felt like I was in the right place. Of all of the countless doctors I'd seen prior- NONE MADE SENSE in their assessment of my symptoms. Many didn't even listen to my problems! Dr. Neville did.....and he understood. He then started explaining everything to me in a way that I understood and all that he said made PERFECT SENSE! I have now been in treatment for several months, and my health has gradually been improving for the first time-IN YEARS! Dr Neville explained that it would take time and emphasized the need to "Stick with it". He doesn't 'over promise'. His goal is to help people understand and treat illnesses that are totally dismissed by many medical professionals. He is a very 'down to earth', patient, kind, caring, compassionate man, with years of both professional and personal experience with CFS & AD, and ALL of the symptoms that come with these diseases, when left untreated. I have FINALLY found the help I desperately needed. Again----- Having been to countless docs and well known facilities that offered me little to NO HOPE------I am finally on the road to recovery! That's because Dr. Neville TAKES THE TIME to put ALL of the pieces of ones 'health puzzle' together. And he does it so very well. He LISTENS. He CARES, and it SHOWS!

I arrived at her office a few minutes ahead of my appointment and filled out the necessary paperwork. The waiting room has plush furniture, smells beautiful and has soft lighting. When it was time to begin, I entered the room with a table (similar to a massage table.) The natural light pouring through the windows, calming music and lovely and minmalistic decor all added to the feeling of peace I felt immediately. I laid face up, got comfortable and the session began. Since we had talked about what to expect, I felt prepared for the hands held over points of my body (not touching), and some of what was said (some statements, some questions that are a brief conversation between her and I). But I was not prepared for the intense feelings I experienced - like glowing light radiating from my core, a soft, warm blanket enveloping my body, the feeling of my breath in my chest and my heart beat and blood in my veins more significant - both physically and mentally. The entire experience lasted about 90 minutes, but it felt more like 30-40. I was never unconscious, but felt close to a dream-like state for much of the session. Marie's voice was soothing and she herself exudes a bright energy that is both calming and invigorating. I honestly can say that the first session has already helped me. I feel more centered, more in tune with my body, more aware of the way my mind is working and how I am connected to my environment. These things are hard to quantify (I feel 60% more aware!) but I can tell you the feeling is like none other. Similar to self care routines of exercise, massage and preventive doctor visits, I will be incorporating reiki into my routine. I live in Philadelphia, but will gladly make the trip to Swarthmore to visit Marie again soon. If you are considering reiki, this would be a perfect first experience.

It is a philosophy and spiritual practice, not an exercise technique. = We met up with a group of friends to try the new cafe, Food4All, and ended up getting an in-depth tour from the ashram's founder. An ashram (in case you don't know) is a residential facility for spiritual learning. This one recently opened in the former BCIU buildings on this land, and oh how lucky the neighborhood is to have this foundation move in. They are making the building sustainable, practice zero-waste techniques, and are surrounding the buildings with organic farms. The ashram moved to Berks from Toms River NJ and is open to all, for dining, classes, internships, volunteering, and training, even an advanced certification in yoga therapy. YT can be applied to any workplace to help both the employees and leaders as well as the clients/patiehnts/customers. What a good idea for staff training. The cafe is all-organic and vegetarian, gluten-free, soy-free, mostly vegan actually. We had quiche, pancakes, salad, roasted veggies, and breads in a lovely bright dining area with lots of chai tea (made with coconut milk) and light. There are some innovative yoga classes here, for example, using swings, but they make it all sound welcoming to beginners. What a glorious use of two old school buildings which have been transformed into an open, bright, spacious retreat with many uses.

With all that going on, it can create an inbalance within and take me away from my authentic loving self. Ms. Linda worked with me to balance my energies through meditation, reiki and chakra healing. We discussed the importance of nature, plants, essential oils, bath salts and himalayan salt lamps. Overall I left feeling mentally refreshed with mindfulness and the readiness for a new start. It's an interfaith "resort" for the soul and spirit, run by progressive Roman Catholic nuns who are are kind, welcoming, and very encouraging of people of all faiths converging on their peaceful, beautiful RESIDENTIAL facility in order to meditate, or pray, for the purpose of refreshing one's spirit and calming one's mind. In May 2013 I attended a 2-night silent "Insight/Vipassana" meditation retreat idirected by Matthew Daniell (of the Cambridge Insight Meditation Society) who had in turn been invited to Haverford, PA by the Phildelphia Meditation Center. Note that non-Catholic retreats are not likely to be listed directly on St. Raphaela's retreat calendar - I suggest you google "meditation retreat + Saint Raphaela" to find a Buddhist-/meditation-oriented retreat scheduled at St. Raphaela . Depending on the retreat program you choose to attend you may be able to get a single room or a shared room. Accomodations are clean, bright and simple - NO frills, but cheerful, quiet and very comfortable. The nuns who run the retreat center are good cooks but don't expect the Four Seasons (the retreat I attended was lacto-ovo vegetarian). Desserts were REALLY yummy. ; )) The grounds are lovely and provide ample personal space for "retreatants" and lots of room for walking meditation. In short, you can experience a truly serene and "life-resetting" retreat experience here that is far less expensive that what you would pay at high price-tag "trendy" places like OMEGA or KRIPALU. Easy to get to from 'center city" Philadelphia by a quick commuter train ride plus a short taxi jaunt, or you can take a cab from the Philly city center all the way for about $45.
