I don't use to give a lower rating unless really really bad. We went on Wednesday morning for breakfast. The place was full but not super busy like weekend. Waited fifteen minutes to get our table. After we're seated the server came and took the order. Five minutes our food came. We ordered corned beef hash and eggs and The Krakatoa. In the menu said deliciously volatile which incorrectly advertised. My hashbrown was mushy like other reviewer said. The omelette was taste mediocre. My spouse said his potatoes was half cook and I tried it to proof it. It was still crunchy but the corned beef was tender. We end it up don't finish our breakfast. It's worst food compare than Perkins. We have been eat here for a while. In the past the taste was really good and had generous portions. We always had a left over because we can't finish it. Now the portions was smaller. We have to asked to get our coffee refilled. It's not worth $30 breakfast included tips that we can't enjoy. We won't go back. I always want to support local business but if they can't make a good quality of food, what for? read more

I came here on a Sunday around brunch time. There was a 20-minute wait, but that's to be expected, and it gave me the chance to look around the restaurant before being seated. This place is extremely well-decorated and masterfully laid-out: the artwork is perfect, a large opening in the wall into the kitchen gives patrons a chance to watch their food as it's being made, and this medium-sized restaurant looks extremely spacious because of he gorgeous windows on every wall. Because of the restaurant's modest size, we received our food very shortly after we sat down and ordered. Always a plus after waiting! We sat at the bar because it was just my boyfriend and me. The bar was more comfortable than I was expecting! I had the crab cake Benedict and a strawberry pancake. Both were good--the pancake was very old-fashioned: not sweet, quite large and perfectly fluffy. My favorite part of this meal was actually the coffee: they roast it in-house and it's very tasty! We waited about 10 minutes to be seated, not too bad since it was a busy Saturday morning. Waitress took our drink and food orders quickly. The coffee was ok, I have had better tasting coffee. I ordered the buttermilk pancakes, which were delicious and sweet. Boyfriend got the crab cakes Benedict, which he said were very tasty. The reason for 4 stars is one person in our party received the wrong order, but the staff was very accommodating and made her the correct omelet. An off day? Is it just me? Every time I go to to the Bluebird I am more disappointed. The portions are getting smaller and smaller (except on pancakes which are inexpensive to make), they're substituting orange commercial cheddar for the high quality white cheddar listed on their menu, their bacon is not the same quality and thickness as it used to be, the hash browns are mushy (I asked for crispy) and pedestrian, etc. etc. On a bright note the service is usually cheery and attentive, lots of comfortable seating options, clean restrooms, tables and floors, and the coffee is always piping hot and high quality. But honestly, we're there for the food, and when breakfast for two costs $30 with tip, you expect a more memorable meal. Bluebird you need to up your game! If I want mediocre breakfast food I'll go to Perkins or the Village Inn, it's cheaper and doesn't pretend to be something it's not. Not coming back! read more

All I can say is wow!! I'm just enjoying my slow morning, the sun is shining when all of a sudden I feel a sudden grumble in my stomach. Was it maybe the Mongolian from the night prior? Or Maybe the Corned Beef Hash? Nope just a good old fashioned hunger moan from Tina the talking tummy. So I set out to fill my hunger and stumble upon what I figured would be just another diner with the standard selection. Come to find out I was in for a huge surprise. After settling into my booth, I'm greeted by a very kind waiter. He takes my drink order which I gladly get my usual BM (Bloody Mary for those who are new). I then ask the waiter for some suggestions on the menu. He kindly points me through a few of the options. His final suggestion is something I would've usually overlooked, being buried in the middle of the menu, but I am sure happy I didn't. I ask him to tell me more about the Fish & Chips. The glimmer in his eye reminded me of the look my mom and dad made when I walked across the high school graduation stage. I knew I was in for a treat. The waiter then told me how it was his grandma's recipe brought over from the world renowned restaurant Tailend in St. Andrews. He was touched I wanted to order it. He must've seen the thrill seeker inside of me and suggested I add a side of the Ghost Pepper Aioli which I of course added. I didn't have to wait long once I finished my order. The food came out and was plated beautifully. The fish was light and delicate with a crispy breading that would put up a fight against any true seafood restaurant. The chips were of the highest caliber and the Ghost Pepper Aioli was the extra kick of flavor that put this meal over the top. I loved this meal and will definitely be back here. One suggestion for the people reading. Just coat the fish in the Ghost Pepper Aioli. Dipping the fish into the sauce caused the fish to fall apart because it was so delicate. If you do end up at Bluebird, there is no reason to look at the menu. Order the Fish & Chips with the Ghost Pepper Aioli and you can thank me later. read more

Great place for breakfast all day. We were there on a Wednesday so got seated right away. We were a party of five. One was an eight month old baby. They were very accommodating. Breakfast was ordered and served promptly. Omelets, pancakes, breakfast sandwiches all were really good. Coffee and tea was excellent. Prices are good. Staff is friendly and polite. Very clean. Took my friend here who was visiting from Baltimore for breakfast. Since I read pst reviews I opted to not get the pancakes and had a bacon egg and cheese sandwich with a cup of coffee. The coffee came with free refills (always nice) and the sandwich had a delicious pesto sauce which made in non - run-of-the-mill. My friend had an interesting egg dish with pepper chili (no meat!) and she loved it! I was happy I found a place that gave her a great impression of food in Iowa. The service was friendly and we were not rushed! All-in-all thought it was a good value for the price and quality and will be back! Pros: Great food staples as well as more creative options. The Slammin' Salmon is traditionally my favorite but I've ordered it four times at this North Liberty location and have been really disappointed every time - the capers and creme fraiche sauce have been sparse (the capers were once dried up and crunchy even), the dish doesn't come with an additional cup of the glorious caper+ sauce combination, and the salmon ratio hasn't been as generous at this location as it is at the Iowa City location. read more

Bluebird is an Iowa City staple and it makes sense. They're making food that other diners aren't making, it's a little classier, and little more flavor, and it's a quirky space with ample parking. The first thing I want to say directly to whoever reads these reviews that works at bluebird is GET MILK ALTERNATIVES. You're a diner in downtown Iowa city and can't grab soy/almond milk for anyone who drinks your coffee in the morning but you can get 6 different hot sauces? I really don't get it. I've been here a handful of times, some of my best friends work here, and I can't imagine going more than a few months without having breakfast here simply for the polenta cakes and Chile verde with my (unfortunately) black coffee. Overall Bluebird is pretty overhyped compared to other breakfast restaurants I've been to, but I understand why it's a fancier option for an Iowa town. The eggs are often overlooked and the seasonings tend to be more on the salty side. P.s. please stop putting fruit on top of savory dishes. read more

Easily my favorite breakfast spot in the Iowa City/CR area. We go here about twice per month. All of the breakfast dishes have been consistently great. The one minor, but very annoying, thing about this place is their toast machine. Multiple times we've been there the miasma of burnt toast has almost made us leave. It's very pronounced and reeks. I don't know if they don't clean it enough or what. Again, the breakfast food is awesome, and the service has always been great. I'll keep going back. I just wish they'd get that burnt toast smell resolved. read more

I went to the Bluebird Cafe with my son for dinner. I expected a little more. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger for myself and the kids' menu chicken strips for him. I was asked how I wanted my burger cooked, and I said medium. It came back well done and was pretty dry. Usually when you get onions you have to pull the rings apart and leave some out, but the chef had other plans to ensure that wasn't an issue. I got one small center ring that rivaled the diameter of a half dollar. I'm guessing he figured the pineapple garnish they put on every plate makes it up. They offered a variety of cheeses, and I do take some responsibility there for not indicating I wanted the jack cheese (but I also wasn't asked), so I ended up with American. I was halfway through when asked how the meal was, so I expressed my disappointment and that I didn't have time to wait to have it fixed, so they did take half off the $9 burger. My kid's chicken strips were only about 1/8 inch thick and looked a little flimsy, but he's 6 and didn't really care. The service was all right. What you'd expect at a diner. It was decent inside. They also serve beer to wash down the dry burger I had, so that's a plus. They have a variety of seating options including the typical booths, 2 person tables to the side, and an unusually large 2 section counter with barstools to sit at that would've been cool to sit at for a breakfast or something. Probably not the place for a bigger group, as it's not very big and your counter would be the only option. Overall, I'm really hoping the dead burger and flat chicken strips were an exception to the norm at Bluebird. In an up and coming area like New Liberty with much competition, there are plenty of other places to attain some solid American fare to drown out your hunger. The diner idea and menu options they have going are good, but it's a shame it wasn't delivered better. From reading some other reviews, it sounds like breakfast might be your way to go as long as you don't mind some burnt toast from time to time..... read more

Ate breakfast here on 7/23/18 , a monday. it was an easy place to find. Parking lot was 2/3 full at 08:45, there were 5 ! Iowa highway patrol cars there :) No wait , got seated quickly , I guess we missed the rush. nice sized place w/ many seating options. order was taken promptly and food got there in good time as well, we shared a Veggie omelet, the hash were tepid at best and on the sparse side, the highlight was the water, it was very good , ( filtered , I imagine) if you are sharing , ask them to add an extra egg. The only taste to the whole thing was the cheese on top, would be nice to either taste the egg or any of the veggies, it wasn't loud in there , which was a good thing, we will go again in the future. the people next to us had blueberry pancakes and ham , it looked good $10.00 plus tip for coffee, omelet , toast and hash browns. read more

My favorite breakfast dish is their pancakes if you are in the mood for something "sweet" for breakfast, and I love their eggs benedict for something a little more "savory". I'm not a big omelette person so I have not had one but I've heard that they are amazing. I've also been here for dinner and with all the breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu options available at that time, you are sure to find something you like. We went here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. My husband had a fried egg sandwich with bacon, my father enjoyed the Krakatoa omelet, and I was allowed to order off the kids menu, and went for the Elvis themed PB and banana sandwich with a few slices of bacon. I opted for a side of fresh fruit. The place was busy, so we had to wait for a few minutes, but then realized we could sit at the counter and be served immediately. We were quickly greeted by a friendly employee, and our order was taken as soon as we were ready. My dad praised the coffee (and he's a hard man to please in that department), and he barely had time to finish his first cup before our food was placed in front of us with a smile. Everyone enjoyed their meal, my fruit was tasty and fresh, and had a sprinkling of citrus juice over it, making it extra delicious. Everything was clean, fast, prompt and friendly. I commented that I was glad we had a fun, nearby option to take friends and family to when visited. A great discovery, and I can't wait to go back. We sat near the order window, so were able to watch other plates of amazing looking food be whisked out to other customers. The pancakes looked like perfection, especially as the cook dumped a generous handful of fresh, cut strawberries over the top just before they went to the table. I know what I'm getting next time! Prices were reasonable. My only complaint really is the location in a strip mall - but that's pretty much all of North Liberty, it seems! read more

The cinnamon roll french toast sounds awesome, but in reality it is not as good as french toast and not as good as a cinnamon roll. Funny how that works. I also had the Krakatoa omelet. The description said it had "citrus cream cheese", and I guess I assumed that there would only be a little. Instead, it was a cream cheese overload. I think it would have been a lot better without the cream cheese period. My wife got the Florentine omelet, which she liked. She did remark that the pesto looked like panda poo. Overall, I was disappointed. I would give it 2 stars, but since my wife liked hers I can go three. Doubt I'll be back though unless she insists. read more

Best breakfast in North Liberty. Servers have always been knowledgeable and friendly. Cooks know what they're doing because dishes come out on time even if it's packed, which it frequently is for breakfast. My family and I went to the Bluebird on a weekday afternoon. The place was a bit small but there seemed to be plenty of seating. We were lucky when we arrived as there was one booth available. We were seat quickly and took our time perusing the menu. We all ordered ice teas which were quite flavorful. My son ordered the Cinnamon Roll French Toast. I ordered the Corn Beef Hash and my husband ordered the Italian Beef sandwich. We all tried the french toast as my son ate nearly all of it but left one ring of the toast. It was flavorful and something I thought I would come back to enjoy. My son loved it as well. The Italian Beef sandwich was juicy and well seasoned though the fries were slightly above mediocre in my eyes. I absolutely loved the corned beef hash. The turnips and parsnips really added to the hash's flavor and texture. The cost was reasonable as well. I look forward to trying other menu items. read more

My friend chose Bluebird Café for her birthday dinner. A great choice. The menu has something for everyone. I'm a carnivore and had a delicious, flavorful Krakatoa Burger. The vegetarians had crab cake po' boys. We enjoyed the good beer selection and although it has a disgusting name the Bloody Bird was a delicious take on a Bloody Mary. We ate so much the four of us couldn't finish a piece of yummy peach pie. Our server, and the others, were all friendly and helpful. Don't let the stripmall location throw you off: this café is all casual, interesitng homecookin'. They do need to upgrade their website, however. It made me think that the restaurant was going to be less than it is. read more
