I will say that it's typically very busy so service could sometimes be a little overwhelmed since lots of families come here for breakfast and family gatherings. Stopped in on a Sunday morning and boy were they busy. They gave us a wait time of 30 minutes and that was pretty accurate. Once seated, a drink order was taken quickly and they had a dedicated drink crew keeping the drinks flowing. It was a bit slow to get our order taken and then the kitchen was really slammed so it took a while to get our food. Once our food arrived, all was great as the food was excellent. I stopped by Bluebird Cafe this Saturday morning around 8:30 am and only had to wait a couple of minutes to be seated, which wasn't bad at all. I built my own egg omelette with asparagus, onions, bell peppers, spinach, feta cheese, and added a side of pesto and smoked salmon. It came with hashbrowns on the side. The omelette was delicious, although the hashbrowns were a bit overcooked. One concern I had was that some of the young ladies preparing the orders weren't wearing gloves when handling food like the toast. I saw them touching their pants, hair, and cellphones, which made me question the hygiene. They should consider wearing gloves for food safety, especially with items like toast that are handled directly. On a positive note, our waitress was very pleasant and checked on us frequently, which made the experience even better. My girlfriend ordered a vegan omelette with toast, and she had no issues with her meal. We both enjoyed our teas--she had green tea, and I went with peppermint. We loved our server who seemed like a professional. I wish I knew his name but he had a super cool rose tattoo on his upper right arm and a tattoo world map on his left lower arm. He was friendly, the service was quick, and attentive. Our food was tasty. The Krakatoa omelet was delicious yet interesting with the citrus cream cheese. I couldn't tell if I enjoyed the citrus notes or not, but I ate the whole omelet. The cinnamon roll French toast is exactly what you'd expect. It's not super eggy like the French toast I make at home but it's definitely not just a cinnamon roll either. The sausage is homemade and sweet. Let me just start by saying that I went to this place by myself at 7am to study for an important exam, so it wasn't busy (as far as I was aware). I am also very big into food, but ever so slightly picky in how things taste. However, the food was deliciously perfect! The biscuits and gravy were on point. Secondly, the server was amazing at what she did. She made sure that all her tables were given what they needed very efficiently and quickly. Third, the ambiance was wonderful! Very clean and very nice! I loved the music that played and the decor they had all over the walls. The process for the bill was quick as well... I felt bad because I had stayed for longer than what people typically stay for, but they never made me feel rushed to leave or forced me out, so thank you! (And thank you for complimenting my card! You're so kind! ) Lastly, as a person who worked in the food industry before, working in a restaurant is a very tough job to do. At times, it can get very overwhelming for them. Breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner - Bluebird does it all with ease. It's a "go-to" for many locals, a place to bring guests, and a place to grab takeout when you can't decide on dinner. Bluebird has become one of my top places to order out from. Bluebird is also normally very fast, so while you may have to wait a long time for orders to be ready elsewhere, that's not the case here. Their specials are what helps them rise to the top, in my opinion. The variety in the specials is enjoyable and means that you won't get tired of ordering the same thing over and over. If you eat in, make sure to check the board on your way in; and if you call for takeout, ask what their specials are (they also often post them on social media, but not all the time). read more

A Friday night at about 7 pm with mostly moms, dads, and their kids. A homey atmosphere. I ordered meatloaf. Nice ambiance. My waitress lazily plunked my set up onto the tabletop in the middle of nowhere, instead of where it was supposed to go, on my side of the table. I decided I wanted coffee but my waitress, Josie, cut me short and rushed off, having failed to ask if I wanted cream in my coffee, which I did. The portion was gigantic and it tasted pretty good. The side of of fried onions and peppers was a little greasy. I wish I could say it was piping hot, but it was not. Instead, all the items were lukewarm which meant the plate had sat at the window waiting to be picked up while she gabbed with her buddies. Good meatloaf, nicely-sized portion but nearly cold. After the meal, I ordered chocolate cake for dessert. I watched Josie remove what looked like the sole surviving, a plastic-wrapped portion, from under the bar. On its last legs, the hunk of cake was shamefully inedible, Dry as a bone, and hard like a rock. I sent it back without taking a single bite. I dawdled over coffee. When I motioned that I was ready for my ticket, Josie promptly plunked it down on my table, asking if I wanted a to-go box. I said yes which she quickly delivered. But she failed to ask how the meal tasted and never took the opportunity to ask if I wanted anything further. Marginal service. At about midnight, I vomited on and off for about five or ten minutes. Bluebird is a solid breakfast spot and is appreciated as there aren't a lot of breakfast options in North Liberty. As others noted, it does get pretty busy because of this. They are pretty quick once you order though. While they do offer lunch/dinner items, they are more known for breakfast which is served all day. Crab cakes on a hoagie with remoulade sauce, perfect, refills right there, perfect, beer battered fish, perfect, hamburger's juicy deliciousness, perfect. Cleanliness, perfect, even the restrooms. Homemade ranch. This is like the test of all tests when you're a devout lover of ranch. PERFECT. I've picked up my meals twice now and the food is delicious, and, the best part, ready to go in 10 minutes! I've ordered a basic eggs, toast, hash browns, and sausage breakfast to go and it was so filling and good. The staff was great about making sure I had utensils and condiments to go along with my meal before I left. The second time I ordered, I had the Big Person Grilled Cheese. Yum! The food tasted delicious and the service was good as well. My waitress never let my water get empty which was great, especially considering I drink a lot of water. Frankly, nothing is spectacular but at the same time nothing is ever bad. It is simply a safe place to eat. The coffee is really good. Waffles are really good, if not overpriced. The hamburgers are really good. Everything is really good. Like I said. It is safe. That is assuming you can get a seat on a Sunday morning, which is always a challenge. If there is a frustration with the menu items, it is that they do not offer chicken and waffles. They have chicken strips. They have waffles. Why not combine the two into the ever trendy chicken and waffles plate? The only other negative I can think of, which is what keeps this from being a five star review, is that the service is very very hit or miss. Sometimes you have a server that seems to always be on top of refilling your drinks and/or checking in on you. Other times, it feels as if you are the last people on the planet, trying to get a refill of coffee. Considering the price of a cuppa coffee, you should always try to get at least two or three cups.
