This has some of, if not the best pancakes I've ever had. They're so good, that even if I had diabetes I'd risk it and get them and not give a shit. The wait staff is friendly and doesn't question when I go in for an omelette, 3 pancakes and a mixed drink after I get off work at 7am. We ordered carry out breakfast. The restaurant was busy but tables were fairly distanced with some outside seating options as well. There wasn't much waiting room, so lots of crowding around the front door. I was disappointed to see a handful of employees were wearing masks below their nose or under their chins - including cooks in the kitchen. As a very Covid conscious family, this was concerning and inhibited our ability to fully enjoy our meal. Amazing place for a Sunday brunch with friends. Once we were seated our food came out in less than 10 minutes - great service from Sherri!! I got the biscuits and gravy and it was to die for. The biscuits are crunchy on the outside and so fluffy and soft on the inside! The gravy is delectable - definitely will be craving it in the future. It came with two eggs and hash browns. I really like Bluebird Cafe for breakfast. The wait times can be kind of long on the weekend, but well worth it for some delicious coffee and a tasty greasy spoon meal. The portion sizes here are large. Lots of interesting omelet options that come with hash browns and toast. Their pancakes and waffles are good as well. I also am a fan of the biscuits and gravy and the huevos azul. The cinnamon rolls also look and smell amazing, but I haven't had the chance to try them yet. Service is usually good. This place has the perfect style of class and comfort all wrapped into some of the best coffee that I have ever tasted. After scoping this place on Yelp for months and arriving to a line out the door, we were super stoked to have finally made it out to try Bluebird. We met my dad there and were told it would be 30-40 minutes wait, no big deal on a Sunday and clearly there was quite a crowd. It ended up being closer to an hour before we were seated since we passed on some spots at the counter. Our server was friendly and attended us as quickly as possible, but after another 45 minutes or so, our food was delivered and she effectively went missing. (In fact, I think we saw one of the hostesses more than our server because she tried to bus plates that we were using about 3 times...) Normally, being that it was so busy, I might not have been so frustrated, but my omelette was made wrong and Matt's pancakes were burnt and almost inedible. We chose to forge on considering we had already waited so long and didn't want the remake to get lost in the chaos. Our server resurfaced and did let us know she'd comped my omelette, which was totally unexpected. Frankly, based on the reviews I feel comfortable assuming the crowd is a normal occurrence for them. So there shouldn't be any reason they can't execute toast and pancakes. It was an okay meal, but to wait 2 hours for burnt and incorrect orders is absurd. I live for brunch - if it came down to choosing between ice cream and a good omelet and hashbrowns I would hands down choose the latter any day. This little restaurant satisfied all of my brunch needs - I ordered the 'Mile High' omelet with a side of hashbrowns and my personal fav a gluten-free pancake for my side! The price was reasonable (for the amount of food you get) and the service was alright. The restaurant was kind of busy with it being Sunday morning - which was the only downfall. Tucked away in the corner of what has to be the fastest growing town in eastern Iowa. Stopped here at 5 on a Friday afternoon and just about had the place to ourselves. Customer service has really taken a nose dive recently - I called attempting to place an order to go and was told that's no longer allowed if the store is busy. It seems the only way you are allowed to eat breakfast here - at least on a Sunday morning - is if you want to sit and wait in the store for your food. Though apparently, if I wanted to eat breakfast after 2 pm, then apparently to go orders are back on. How any customer would know when these magical times occur perplexes me. I wonder what happens if you don't finish. To me, since they are incapable of packing it before I've eaten any of it, it seems they may dictate you leave your leftovers behind. Maybe this isn't a thing that bothers you, but having it dictated to me where I must eat your food during certain hours is something I've never experienced. Especially in a store I've placed numerous to-go orders from (though to be fair, not in a while). Personally, I'll be eating (or at least ordering from) elsewhere going forward. P.S. Tin Roost (right down the street!) is more than willing to prepare your breakfast to go! And it's delicious! read more

This is probably one of our favorite breakfast locations. On Saturday or Sunday morning be prepared to wait 30 minutes for a table. Kids and I always order the bluebird eggs. Typical American breakfast platter. Eggs, toast, hash browns, and choice of bacon or sausage. My husband is usually more adventurous and will order something different each time. Their coffee is strong and amazing. Keep your eyes out for some famous movie stars, TV stars, and athletes/coaches who may frequent this restaurant. Seeing them in everyday clothes, sweatpants, and hats remind us that we are all wanting a good breakfast. The service is always very friendly, pleasant, and quick. read more

Updating my review yet again! Bluebird is back up to 4 stars. Someone apparently listened when others complained about the pancakes. They're not back to their original size, but they're larger than they were and the flavor is back again! If I come back and those pancakes have been futzed with again, I'm done. I love this place, but I love my pancakes, too. BLUEBIRD! KEEP THE CONSISTENCY! OK, so here's my initial review with some tweaks: Although I live in Chicago, I visit the Iowa City area pretty routinely and I always make a stop here for breakfast at least once per visit. Their pancakes are out of this world, their omelette creations are really tasty, and their service is surprisingly good even though some of their wait staff are kind of interesting. I've been here 20-30 times in the past few years and I've only had a bad experience once (aside from the multiple complaints I had during The Great Pancake Abatement of 2014). They were very accommodating about my issues and I left as a satisfied customer in the end. Recommendations: 1) The pancakes. They're fluffy and delicious! 2) The Krakatoa (but tell them to go easy on the citrus cream cheese or else it's a bit overwhelming - and I'm not the only reviewer who seems to think this). 3) The Buffalo Omelette (it's not very spicy, so ask for some hot sauce if you're looking for heat!) 4) The hash browns. I hate hash browns. No, seriously, I freaking hate them. But not here. This is the only restaurant I've ever been to where I enjoyed the hash browns. They're unbelievable. So, if you usually hate hash browns like I do, at least give these a try. Stay Away From: 1) Biscuits and gravy. I'm a big fan of biscuits and gravy, but these were so greasy and floury that I had to send them back. I hate to use such a word, but I thought they were actually disgusting. 2) Crab Cakes Benedict. I only had them once and they tasted very fishy. "Fresh" was not a word I could use to describe the crab cakes. My friend (who lives in town) says he orders them regularly and they've always been very good. Maybe I just had a batch on an off-day. All in all, give the old Bluebird a try! From the owner and his wife, to all of them. What a great team they are. They made the Bluebird not just a restaurant but a place to go and hang out with friends. Ordered the breakfast sammy on sourdough this morning with a double order of hash browns. Bread was stale. So stale that I would compare it to a stale crouton than stale bread. Pretty obvious that your making someone's sandwich with hockey puck bread! Also, egg was over cooked and garlic aioli was not evenly spread. My last few orders have been more misses than hits. Worth giving it a shot is my recommendation. The service was great, the menu has an outstanding selection, the food rating could just be a personal preference. I had the loaded omelette with steak and mushrooms along with the French toast (with cream and strawberries). The omelette was under seasoned for my liking and the steak and mushrooms gave off no extra flavor aside from the texture being there. As for the French toast I enjoyed the flavor of the cream and strawberries it all went together well. The white toast, and hash browns for the sides were ok. The toast was perfect not undercooked or burnt, as for the hash browns not crispy enough for me. Overall a decent place worth trying and the service was outstanding. read more

Very disappointing ordered a chocolate chip waffle and just plain pancakes. Both came with chocolate chips..... also ordered ham when it came it was barely cooked and it was cold. Not one of the better meals I've had there. Also the waitress was not very attentive and definitely ignored us after we received our meal. I wanted to complain about the pancake but I was aggravated that she didn't pay attention to what was ordered. read more

This is a great little diner. A little bit of outside seating is available if the weather is nice (although not much of a view as it faces the busiest street in North Liberty). It has pretty classic diner food and breakfast all day. Others in my party didn't like their eggs that hard but I don't like them wet, so I liked mine (could have had WAY more cheese though--it was almost undetectable). Paired with an arnold palmer, I am quite content. I could go back again and again for the pancakes alone. This place was recommended by my friend as I was visiting for a chess tournament in nearby Coralville. The place had a nice design, the food was good, & the waitress (same person both times) was easily the best wait staff member I have ever had. On Friday night I had their new salmon dinner entree with raspberry sauce. I got word that they are thinking about adding it to the main menu soon. It was divine & I highly recommend it. The asparagus & the rice were just right to fill out that portion. The chocolate cake was also good. On Saturday morning, I ordered the following items: 3 pancakes, real maple syrup, 2 eggs, & sausage. The pancakes were very good, not too hard & not too soft. Portions in both visits were larger than I expected. Cait did a fantastic job. She was enthusiastic, helpful about questions, & seemed to time her visits just right, beating me to the punch when a soda needed refilling or to check on how I was doing with the food. Tried this place last Sunday for breakfast. The ambiance is hipsterry and fun and the place was packed. I was hopeful. I got the Popeye omelet, my brother got the Huevos Azul. They served his with meat when he asked for no meat. They gave him the wrong dish, meant for someone else. But they comped him as it was a pretty big mistake. The servers were all very nice. And that part of the Bluebird was good. The food, however, was really lacking. The omelet was rubbery in texture and taste. The hollandaise had zero flavor, maybe butter flavored but just call it butter if you aren't going to do the real thing. The hash browns were downright awful. They tasted like they had been cooked in dishwater. My brother got his veggie Huevos Azul and he said it was ok. But the pepper chili on it looked like thin gravy to me. This place ticks so many boxes but falling flat on the food front is just not acceptable. read more
