We had two meals here during our stay at BFB. Breakfast and Dinner were both very different experiences. I'll start with breakfast. This was the best food we had while there. I ordered the hash with poached eggs and my wife ordered the wild rice pancakes. The pancakes were perfect. The hash was had way too much garlic for breakfast and my poached eggs were boiled. The kid that was serving was a mumbles but was very nice and did a good job overall with the service. Dinner was different. The entrees weren't as good as expected for the price but we enjoyed it overall. Creativity was lacking a bit at dinner and service seemed annoyed by some of our requests and the leisurely pace of our decision making. We're there on vacation. We always eat here on our annual North Shore visit. The ambiance gets a superb 5-star rating with Lake Superior about 50 feet past the windows (or closer still on the deck). A lot of the wait staff are foreign students working here for the summer. Our waiter, Rade, also gets 5 stars. He was personable, attentive, and knowledgable. My wife's Atlantic salmon gets 4.5. It was moist and delicious but needed a good sauce to get to 5. My filet mignon gets 3. It was flavorful but overdone. I asked for medium and it came medium-well. The cheese plate and the cardamom cake were both excellent. On value, they get a 3 or maybe even a 2. Prices are pretty steep. Overall, it averages out to a four. read more

The fact that this place is about 15 steps from the condo in which we stayed probably would have been enough to bring us back 2 nights in a row, but it's good, really really good. Our favorite dish was the scallop-pork belly appetizer, which the 3 adults all ordered the 2nd night. The duck chowder was a huge hit. I loved the Caesar salad. The Cuban sandwich was just fine. My 10yo was crazy about the hot chocolate chip cookie. This place could afford to be just OK since options are limited in this area, but they really go the extra 10 miles. read more

I had been here a couple times, breakfast and dinner and I can tell you it is worth a trip! Wow the view!!! Such an amazing view!! It's worth it to sit back and have a glass of wine and watch the sun set! You really feel like you are in your own little piece of heaven here it is so nice. They have a really nice gluten free menu here! I had some wonderful risotto and fish, I recommend this. I also love the wild rice omelette!!! This place at first glance seems to be wonderful. Upon closer inspection one quickly finds out quite the contrary. While the views and atmosphere are rather nice, the cost of the food and the portions were very unsatisfactory. And the wild rice was absolutely terrible. Anywhere that charges over 10 dollars for a 2 egg omelet needs to just stop. The service was mediocre at best. Overall it seems like the place is some sort of cover up for the Russian mob or something. I would starve in their parking lot before I gave them another dime of my money! read more

This was an immensely satisfying experience the easily exceeded expectations. The view alone was worth the visit, but the accolades don't stop there. The Pasta Verde I ordered was easily one of the top five pasta dishes I have ever had. Topped with a lightly poached egg, the taste was mouth watering. COuld have been slightly better had the vegetables been not cooked to death. The sugar snap peas were soggy and the other veggies were very limp. My dining party were heaping accolades on the Fresh Catch Sandwich (Salmon Cake on this particular night), and similarly with the appetizer. Service was acceptable, though not exceptional. Not sure why all the positive reviews. Way over priced for what you get. Presentation was nice. I ordered a steak medium which I had to send back because it was served well done and for almost $30 I'm not going to accept that. Second time it was better but still more done then medium, the steak was pretty flavor less still. I know out of my group of 4 they where not thrilled either for the price being paid. I'll stick to fine dining in the twin cities. Would have been happier with McDonald's. read more

I've eaten here a few times and the food is consistently pretty good. The dishes are creative, classic American food with a Minnesotan flare. Recently, we visited for dinner. Started with the spinach and kale dip, which was EXCELLENT and very unique compared to many "spinach dips". My husband had the classic burger and said "it was good"- he would give it 3.5 or 4 stars. The fries were really good. I had the salmon, which was prepared with julienned apple and on a bed of roasted red pepper, onion, and spaghetti squash. The roasted red pepper taste was overpowering when paired with the salmon, but points given for creativity, and I REALLY appreciated seeing spaghetti squash on a north shore menu (or menu anywhere). The salmon itself was excellent- 5 star piece of fish. Wine list is good. Nice ambiance. Good service- consistently on the slow side, but what's the hurry, you're (probably) on vacation on the north shore! read more

Stopped in here for breakfast on a beautiful summer day and enjoyed the Scandia Benedict. Ton of great flavors (the smoked salmon was on point) and the fruit that accompanied it was so fresh and tasty! Beautiful view of the lake from their windows and the service was very attentive. Sunday 11am breakfast on the drive back to Minneapolis from Lutsen. Pros - service was fast and friendly - food was cooked fresh to order - fruit garnish on the plates were FRESH! - hot and crispy breakfast potatoes - our server left both a carafe of coffee and water on our table which was great Cons - They don't take AMEX. They do take other credit cards, so no big deal but I had to have at least one "con", right? Highly recommended and would go back again the next time I'm in the area. read more

Great dining experience all around. Stopped by around 8:30pm on a Saturday night not too crowded not too dead, just right. Seated upstairs in a booth that looked out on the lake. Great view. Great soft music. Very quiet and relaxing atmosphere. Food was fine dining priced but no worse than the twin cities. Had the chicken fusili and the filet mignon. We were please with how both were prepared and tasted. Bread was delicious. Desert was great. table service was exceptional. We'll make it a dining stop when up at Lutsen in the future. read more

We wanted an excellent meal on a get away weekend. We got it. Took a risk on the fresh fish because they said it was Lake Trout caught on that lake. It was cooked perfect the best fish I have had in MN. Also the Duck and wild rice chowder was awesome. Like the buttery flavor of oyster stew but thickened from the rice. Very nice. We visited for brunch on Aug 6 2016. Everything was fantastic. The service was excellent, our waitress Adnana was courteous and friendly. The food was presented beautifully and the view from our seats on the back 'patio' was phenomenal. You could also eat inside with a stunning view if you wished. I ate the wild rice omelette. (Fresh tomato, peppers and cheese) It came with a very big serving of hash brown which was also delicious. A bit of fruit on the side was nice. My family enjoyed eggs Benedict and commented that it was also delicious. We ordered the side sausage and Applewood smoked bacon - both phenomenal. We had mimosas and bloody Mary's to drink. Fresh orange juice in the mimosa and nice champagne. The bloody Mary had a bug juicy olive and a big pickle with nice rimmer. I can't think of a negative to this experience. This is THE spot to eat in Lutsen. read more

So tonight 7-18 I went into the grille and as I got to the host stand there was 2 hosts both knew nothing on what was happening in the restaurant. So once we were seated the server didn't bother to tell us the specials nor were they posted anywhere. Now let's get to the meal I had the filet which was cooked to the proper temp and that was the only good thing about the dish the vegetables that came with it were clearly a pre done frozen product and the mashed potatoes were supposed to be parm mashed but were only potatoes and really nothing else. The sauce that came with the steak was just your plain old beef gravy I mean the least they could do is add some red wine to and make a little nicer. Now on to my girlfriends meal She had the shrimp and lobster pasta first the good there was a fair amount of the shrimp and lobster in it. So here is the bad it was all sloped together in a bowl drowning in sauce that really had no flavor, the veggies in it were all cut to different sizes and it just seemed like the chef stopped caring about the food that went out. I just can't believe that you are charging 38$ for a filet and 34$ for a pasta and not care at all if you are sending out crappy food or not over all the main meals would be rated a one star out of 5. The desert we got was a white chocolate raspberry cake and it came with ice cream and whipped cream first it was all a pre made product again and it's just down right lazy when a place won't even make there own whipped cream. Needless to say I will not be returning for any reason and I would recommend that you don't waist your time either. Overall 1 out of 5 over priced and not quality read more

Bluefin Grille has a delicious food and a spectacular view looking over superior. I did not stay at the resort, but this restaurant is one of my favorites. Their cheese artisan plate as an appetizer is to die for! Also, the pumpkin quinoa salad was superb. I would definitely recommend this spot to people visiting Lutsen! read more

Stayed and ate here after three fun and grueling days on the Superior hiking trail. My daughter and I shared a whole chicken special that was amazing. Our server caught on that my daughter avoids dairy and warned her that the side dish had dairy but they could make it without. Wonderful service!!!Superb meal!!! We were very disappointed to see that they have changed their menu to reflect nothing but no selections of nothing but poor tasting and a bad attempt at pretty food! We have enjoyed eating there for years on our trips up north but will not be back unless there is a change in the menu! No steaks, no choice in prime ribs sizes and nasty chicken with this nasty tasting sauce that is totally inedible. No choice in even a good old fashion hamburger. Save your money and dine else where you can get some real food that is done properly. read more

Everything about our meal here was excellent, except for Mike the bartender. Unfortunately it only takes one bad employee to ruin an otherwise nice night out and earn your place of businees one star. When we arrived we were told there would be a 20 minute wait and we could have a drink and wait at the bar. When we sat down it was it was only moderately busy but the bartender Mike walked back and forth in front of us literaly 9 TIMES without ever asking if we would like something to drink or even acknowledging us. We sat there for 15 MINUTES watching him walk right in front of us, chatting with the waitstaff and then incredulously asking the couple at the other end of the bar if they would like another drink when their glasses of wine were still half full. They glanced at us kind of sheepishly and said "I guess we could start another". I finally asked if we could please order some drinks and Mike the "bartender" rolled his eyes, sighed loudly and said "I will get to you as soon as humanly possibly Sir" in the rudest way possible. I was a bartender for 5 years and I've never seen such a combination or arrogance, rudeness and incompetance in my life. It was disgusting. He continued to ignore us until we finally ordered AT him as he walked past us again. We got our drinks right at the 25 minute mark, and just as our table was ready. So then we had to wait for another 5 minutes to pay for our drinks before we could go to our table. Once we got to the dining room everything was fine. Our waitress was kind, courteous and efficient and the food was EXCELLENT. The scallop with pork belly appetizer and the entree ribeye are especially recommended. Unfortunately it was difficult to enjoy our meal with the bad taste left in our mouth from one terrible employee. Management needs to address this glaring problem in the bar before they will receive any more business from our family. read more

Location, Location, Location. 10 out of 10 for the location, right on the edge of Lake Superior. On our first weekend on the North Shore we thought we would indulge ourselves and have a decent meal at the tastefully decorated and well located Bluefin Grille. We entered the restaurant and were greeted warmly by the host a pleasant smiling young man from Turkey. He guided us to a booth where we had a great view of the lake and nearby beach area and we also had our private space, the booth. Our waitress was happy and smiled warmly, as do experienced wait staff. She asked if we wanted drink and we declined. We read through the menu and found two dishes which we were anxious to try. I am a lover of trout and my wife is a carnivore who loves filet mignon. That was it; the Lake Trout for me and Filet Mignon,, ccoked rare for my wife. We ordered the artichoke dip with toasted pitta triangles and a bottle of Spanish wine, a blend of Tempranillo / Cabernet Sauvignon- Earth 2.0. The wine arrived, good taste , high tannins and a little bit thin, fruity dry and refreshing but in need of some air. I asked for a decanter and was brought a wine bottle cooler then I pointed to the container in which our water was housed. I poured the wine vigourously into the decanter( carafe). The dip arrived, it was good and plentiful. A long wait ensued. Then our salads arrived, I had asked for oil and vinegar dressing for my salad, it arrived in little plastic containers. The salad was very good, fresh mix of greens; spinach, arugla, baby lettuce and radicchio, cucumber, radish and tomatoe. Then a further wait for the main course. It arrived. The steak was cooked perfectly and the vegeatables for both of us were spot on however my Lake trout was raw at one end and overdone at the other and the whole fillet was coated in cooking oil which tasted old and slightly off. I ate a couple of bites and then sent it back, stating that is was not cooked properly. My wife continued to eat her meal and was three quarters doen when my meal came back. The same piece of fish had been cooked again. I ate it looking for the tast of lake trout but alas all I could taste was burnt skin and the oils. Our waitress came and asked if it was OK. I told her that it was possibly the worst fish meal I had ever tried to eat. She apologized and said I wopuld not be charged for it. I thanked her, asked for the check, paid and left. I am sure that I was unlucky however what should not have happened did; my undecooked fish was recooked and served again. I did not wish to make a scene so I accepted the offer of no charge and I filled out the diner's survey, with a full explanation of my point of view. I am sure that there are many happy diners eating at the Bluefin Grille. I will not be one of them. Don't expect too much and you will be OK. read more

Really happy to have had the chance to eat here. We arrived at 4 pm so we chose from the lunch menu. I chose the pumpkin- quinoa salad with a chicken breast and glass of wine. Lovely. My husband had the duck wild rice chowder and half sandwich. Duck is the perfect fowl to pair with wild rice. I learned that all wild rice soup recipes should immediately be converted to DUCK wild rice soup. Why? Because duck flavor can compete the strong flavor of rice. Cudos to the chef. Overall great experience! The staff was very friendly and the atmosphere is excellent. Although, the linguine noodles were far more thickly cut than I was expecting. As well as the tomato chunks were literal chunks too awkward to eat in one bite. The taste was on point though! The shrimp was also good. The pricing is a bit much for the quantity. Hey, Bluefin Grille! I like the new menu!! I guess there was a new menu made and the food here has improved significantly over the previous menus. I was very impressed and thought the food was solid. The pork ribeye chop with warm apples was delicious and the smashed potatoes were solid too. I also had the wild rice and duck chowder. That was very tasty and perfect for a cold November night. Another person had the chicken scallopini, which I wish they hadn't called it that. It wasn't, but it was still solid chicken. The wild mushroom pasta was tasty too. Maybe a little too much butter and oil, but the taste was excellent. Had to say that I am very impressed. Now just stop ordering cheesecake from the Cheesecake Factory and I'll really be impressed. read more

This was the one mistake we made on our trip to Lutsen this past weekend. Being from Minneapolis I know I am spoiled as we are surrounded by great food and excellent service, but this didn't even hit the mark of our local chain restaurant. I choose the scallops while my husband had the filet. They were both served next to boxed mashed potatoes or way over whipped potatoes, and soggy broccoli and burned asparagus. The description and photos on the website were very misleading. The scallops were not cooked correctly per the description and had the mushrooms on the side that looked like they were precooked burger toppings. Also everything was horribly under seasoned. I don't think there is much quality control or someone tasting the food in back. Let's just say I have never had to put salt and pepper on my own food at a restaurant. It is usually the opposite. After inquiring about a previous menu item, our server explained there had been a "chef" change in the past year and was no longer available. We should have taken this as a warning. There is clearly no vision in the kitchen or a "chef" for that matter. We were given a complimentary creme brûlée with burnt sugar on top. We paid premium prices and received bad wedding food. I give this place two stars because the server we had was very sweet. read more
