Took my cat here for emergency care. He died under anesthesia, was brought back via CPR, but was brain dead. It was sad news, especially for my wife. After we got the bill I told billing manager Katie Simpson that i had a dispute with the bill that I would like to talk about. Her response was to send my bill to collections less than a week after our visit. When I went in to pay the amount I had the itemized bill for at the clinic, the same billing manager claimed I couldn't pay them any more. I had to work it out the with collection agency. Still making it worse the amount they reported to collections was almost double what i had a bill for. Now i have to go through hoops to have it not affect my credit. Think that was the worst part? They charged us for the euthenasia, even though it was their anesthesia error that fried our cats brain. Never take your pets here. They will botch the procedure, they will botch your bill, and they'll screw over your credit by sending in a false amount. Also, in the waiting room for the vet to tell me the news, I found a deer tick crawling up the wall. Unclean, Unprofessional, and I'll be sharing this review with everyone in my community. read more

I have attached the invoice for your review. It is clear that the final bill was inflated to match -- and exceed -- the deposit amount, which I find highly unethical and unacceptable. Additionally, BluePearl performed procedures and administered medications without my direct approval or consent. At no point did they contact me to discuss or authorize these additional treatments. This lack of communication and disregard for consent is deeply concerning. I strongly caution others: do not take your pet here. On December 23rd of 2024 I took my 2 year old feline here and they prioritized my cat and long story short we didn't have the funds for life saving measures. They euthanized and did nose and paw prints as well as a ceramic disk with his paw print and put him in a box with his name on it all for free. They provided emotional support for me and my parents. I was only 15 losing my best friend and they a offered cost free way to end his suffering. They put him in a blanket after the euthanasia and I got to hold him for as long as I wanted one last time. And a couple days later they mailed a card saying how they're sorry for our loss and all of the vets signed it. It was so sweet and definitely made this detestating thing slightly better for me. I went to Blue Pearl for a neurologist appointment with Dr. Niederhuth and had Amanda as my nurse. They both were absolutely fantastic. They explained potential causes of my dogs condition and different ways we could test for these causes. They were able to get me in for a CT scan that day and even interpreted the results before he was ready for pick up. They answered all of my questions and we made a game plan for next steps. Brought my dog in who is vomiting blood and diarrhea with blood to sit in the waiting room for 5 other dogs to be pulled back who came in after ours. One dog who was eating and drinking just fine but ate a small piece of chocolate was even seen before ours who had not eaten and has blood coming out of her! I highly encourage you to AVIOD going to Blue Pearl Hospital at all cost. We recently took our 12 week old puppy to be seen for a injured right back leg and we were completely taken advantage of. We started out with x-rays to look at the hurt area and after further investigating we were told by Dr. Emily Slight that our puppy had been diagnosed with a back right tibia fracture. They put him in a splint, gave an e-collar, and three different types of medication to keep him calm and out of pain. We were told to follow up with our regular vet in a week to get the splint re-wrapped and would have to continue this every week until he was fully recovered. After a full week of resting our puppy in his kennel and lots of medication to keep him calm and quiet we go to visit our regular vet and got a new set of x-rays done. After looking and reviewing those new x-rays with our vet and their radiologist they confirmed that the right back tibia was never even fractured. According to the notes of Blue Pearl's radiologist it was a "suspected fracture but needed a CT scan to confirm" but they never told us or even offered a CT scan. They just followed through with telling us it was fractured and took our money and ran. When I first reached out to Blue Pearl about this situation I had requested a partial refund of the items we clearly did not need (the splint, e-collar, medications, extra set of x-rays and visit to our regular vet). I was put in contact with Shannon Hager who told me that you couldn't see the said "fracture" because our vet took the x-rays in the wrong positions. She kept saying she had two different surgeons look at the x-rays and said that they are still concerned for his leg. I had asked Shannon if they are standing by their statement of his leg being fractured if I could bring him in to get a new x-ray done free of charge in the "right" positions but she refused that it would not be done for free. Mind you we had already spent $1,300 there a week ago. I follow up with my regular vet about the situation and they agree that if the images were in the "wrong positions" they would take more for my peace of mind and to prove a point. After MORE x-rays with our regular vet it was concluded that there never was a fracture in the first place. A fractured bone doesn't just heal over a week. We were told it would be about 4-6 weeks until he was fully healed. Please avoid this hospital at all cost and go elsewhere. We hope to see Blue Pearl make this right as they have always been our go to pet hospital in the past but after the way they handled this and treated our situation we will NOT be back. I get mistakes happen but take the responsibility of a misdiagnosis as stated in your guiding principles on your website. read more

I went to Blue Pearl in Virginia Beach, Virginia. I had appointment with Dr. Aurrielle Jensen, Dermatology. Dr. Jensen and her nurse were absolutely fantastic with me and my dog. They explain what Olaf was going through and suggested several treatments. Olaf doesn't allow other people to touch him, they were patient with him. They showed me the actual price for each items. They allow me to decide what to try or not try. We came up with a plan together to try for one month and then a recheck. I will try Dr. Jensen again. read more

I understand the wait due to it being a holiday, but the staff, particularly Cami, did not care that animals came in after eating something toxic. We were told we would have updates such as vitals and other information. We waited 5 hours and nothing. We asked for our cat back and she told us to clam down and wouldn't grab our cat. We were then told our cat was next to be seen and within 3 minutes we were told oh the vet saw the cat and now we have to pay, but they never told us anything about what the vet said. If there was a minus 5 stars, that would be what I would choose after visiting Blue Pearl on Merle Hay in Des Moines IA. My dog Willy is normally a VERY ACTIVE 14-month-old Golden Retriever. I went to Blue Pearl because Wily was not eating or drinking and lethargic. I got Willy checked in fine and only waited about 30 minutes before a tech came to talk to me. First , she asked NO questions about Willy but instead said It's $200 for initial exam- I said OK Its $700 for the XRays- I said OK It's $345 for blood work- I said OK It's possible that it'll be more, I said OK I asked if the test might tell me if he got into some poison and she said in the rudest tone, "YA KNOW, WE DONT HAVE A CRYSTAL BALL". I might have stayed even after her rudeness but then she said " AND it'll be 6-8 hours before he can be seen". WHAT??? There were 5-6 people with their pets in the waiting room!! Absolutely NO sign of concern for Willy. I WILL NEVER EVER RETURN TO BLUE PEARL I called to speak with a manager, but no one was available, go figure. I'm sure I'll get a pat response about how they are sorry I had a negative experience blah blah!! A friend of mine does business with vets all over the country and told me that Blue Pearl started in Tampa Fl. by a great vet but when it was sold, IT WAS NO LONGER ABOUT THE PET BUT ABOUT THE CASH!!!!! So I called my normal vet and they saw me without an appointment at 7:30 am the next morning.....Willy had an infection and a piece of metal in his tummy! No surgery needed and he is all better now. If I could give zero stars I would. The tech accused me of giving my dog marijuana or cocaine because my dog was lethargic. She wanted to do a drug test on my dog, when I declined she screamed to the back, SHE'S DECLINING THE DRUG TEST. Then the tech took me in a private room and kept asking me if my neighbors smoke pot or do drugs and maybe that's how my dog ate the drugs. I kept explaining to her that we don't do drugs and there are none in our house. My dog ate something bad that had pesticide on it or something. I felt that she had a blockage of some sort as well. I told the tech I was going to go somewhere else and to go get my dog. She went and retrieved my dog and then charged me $125 for nothing. The tech also said when I agreed to x-rays that a radiologist in California would review them at 8:00 in 4 hours. I said I needed to take my husband back to the house once he was done at the car wash cleaning out my backseat because my dog had diarrhea on the way there. She said well I'll just have you pay a $250 deposit if you leave for a bit. Upon check out I told her I would be giving a scathing review and she said go right ahead and then proceeded to accuse me again of giving my dog weed or cocaine while I was checking out. She was awful to deal with and is on a huge power trip. She should be fired and if she worked for me she would be immediately terminated. I took my dog to my actual veterinary clinic at 7:30 when they opened and they did an x-ray and she did have a blockage of some sort and they kept her all day for the barium to go through, she is currently still there. This was the second time my dog had done this and I kept explaining to the tech this and she was insistent that my dog was under the influence of drugs. She acted like she was the police or something, I was waiting for the Urbandale PD to walk through the door. I called later that morning and spoke with a very kind lady named Shannon who is in charge and she was very apologetic and actually refunded me my $125. I hope that tech reads this. She made a stressful situation worse and has no business working with the public. I will never go the this animal hospital again. read more

Wonderful staff. The Veterinarians are knowledgeable and treated our sick dog with care. The office is clean, comfortable and efficiently run. The facility is well staffed. The surgeon was board certified, explained the procedure, and answered my questions. And, he called after the procedure to tell us how it went. The discharge was easy and post-op instructions clear. Do not go here unless you've won the lottery or want to take out a second mortgage on your home. This place is more expensive than a real hospital. Our dog came in with anemia and they gave us a list of possibilities. They quoted between $2000 and $3500 for treatment. On the 3rd day they said our bill was already at $3300 without the transfusion they originally quoted. Their excuse for the discrepancy was that our dog was there longer than the initial 48 hours but the original vet said they expected him to be there at least 3 days so that is just another excuse. After looking at the bill they charged us for an after hours ultrasound which we know for a fact was not done until the next day. If they lied about that to inflate the bill what else did they lie about? It was their recommendation to keep him longer and all they did was the same things they had been doing along with the initial medication. In hindsight I can see this was nothing more than an attempt to inflate the bill. In the end we elected to take him home as they still did not have an answer for his anemia. They wanted to continue with him and run more tests and do a blood transfusion. This would have inflated our bill to about $5000 for 4 days!! This company takes advantage of people at a vulnerable time, they are predatory in their pricing practices and in all honesty should be shut down. I have nothing good to say about this company and would highly recommend going somewhere else that has good morals and ethics, this place doesn't have either of those. read more

Friday the 27th we went to Blue Pearl with our cat Sheldon with full anticipation that they would be able to save him. We didn't know that it was likely cancer and that there wasn't a chance for him to survive this. He was older, a shelter cat from my mom's shelter that had a typical back story of "not sure where he came from". When in the waiting room, listening to the doctor and having my mom on the phone, they spoke briefly together and agreed, while we could throw thousands of dollars at the problem sheldon is facing, it's a bad situation and Sheldon's age is against him. The doctor was clear about this, even though Sheldon was only what we think to have been 10.5 years old, who knows his real age and frankly, he was dying. I thanked the doctor for being honest with me, we discussed a plan to make it painless and the least amount of stress for him; I was there through it all holding him and making sure he knew it was going to be okay. They let me cry over him, and then helped me take him back to the waiting room where my boyfriend was waiting to unfortunately hear the news no one wanted to hear. They were soft spoken to us, empathetic, and even though they were busy saving lives in the back and likely sleep deprived, they gave us all the time we needed. We paid our 600 dollar bill and took him with us to take back to our home. This is a very long review, I'm aware. But I wanted anyone else out there to read this and know, in my brief experience there under a terrible situation, they did their best to help him and when we no longer could save him they did their best to make the situation easiest for us. If any of my other pets are in grave need at any time of the day I will be going back there. read more

The so called vet was hateful and only concerned with how much money we had to spend....after we exhausted all of her suggestions which included asking a charitable organization to fund the care our pup needed who would then take ownership of our dog...and being denied a petcare credit card....my husband had just battled stage 3 colon cancer and we did not have the $10,000 plus she estimated or the good credit we'd enjoyed prior to the cancer diagnosis so she advised us for $200 they could put him down. She would not give us any hope that if we came up with 10 ,000 he'd have a chance...she gave us no empathy...nothing. she was robotic and rehearsed with a schpiel shed obviously given many times. Im just going to start of by saying, If I could give this zero stars I would. On December 21st, 2022 our husky was badly injured. After seeing how bad her condition was, we immediately took her to our local vet. Our vet recommended we go to BluePearl since the damage was severe and he believed surgery would be needed. My husband and father in law made the two hour drive to Des Moines during a winter storm in hopes of getting help. I stayed behind due to work. Once he arrived, he was greeted by three very rude staff members. Unfortunately, he doesn't remember their names. He was told our pup needed blood work and an xray to determine how bad the damage was. He was told it would cost $1500 for both. He said that was fine and signed the contract. After the tests came in, they said it would be about $8,000-$10,000. We said okay. No issue. In the rush of things, my husband didn't take his checkbook. Valid, that was lack of preparation on our part. Our debit card only has a $1000 limit per day. We didn't have the $8000 cash on hand and the bank wouldn't be open until 8am the next day. We let them know the money was indeed in our savings account and we would pay in full that same morning, but they didn't care. Not only would they not wait until the morning, they also told him he was not allowed to leave to grab his checkbook. He suggested he could stay and my father in law could drive the two hours home and grab it for him and come back. They said that would not work for them. They told him, if either of them left to go get our checkbook, it would be considered abandonment and our pup would be euthanized! After they told him that, my husband told them he just wanted to check her out of the clinic and take her home. They told him he had to pay $2000+ because she had surpassed the original $1500 that they had agreed on. They tried to get him to apply for a CareCredit card which only approved him for $750 due to us not having any debt which wasn't even a tenth of what the total cost was. After going back and forth, they again told him that the total was now $3000+?!! Like? Thankfully, he asked them for an itemized bill. Once they brought the itemized bill to him, the total had magically dropped back to a little under $1500. This place is a money hungry corporation. They don't care about your animals, they just care about their check. I understand wanting to make a profit. We are all trying to survive out here. But to simply have zero compassion for someone in an obviously vulnerable and emotional situation is just plain evil. Our dog is our family. She is like a baby to us. Shame on them for making my husband feel like he wasn't doing enough! We sadly had to put our pup down today. Maybe if she could've had help sooner things would've been different. There are a couple of unfortunates I will list first. 1. Unfortunately, this must be the only hospital in Iowa that you are referred to for emergencies or surgeries. So I guess if it's the only choice, you can be charged whatever they say. 2. Most people that are in a crisis situation with their beloved pet, don't have time to look up reviews on yelp. So I guess this review is mainly to give other people comfort knowing they weren't the only ones that got treated crappy and I feel for you all. My son first took her to Blue Pearl in Cedar Rapids. They examined her and thought it might be a herniated disc. Estimated up to 5000. I applied for care credit. Called Des Moines and said we were approved for 5500. They said to bring her down. We are almost 3 hours away. Needless to say it was stressful for our dog, so she was panting. They immediately took her in the emergency room and asked if we wanted CPR done on her and immediately gave us a price 600-1000 just for CPR. (She did not need CPR). We said no. We were taken to a waiting room. I started to get nervous because I was scared they were going to start doing stuff to her without talking to us. I went back to the front desk to discuss this with the girl at the desk. She was eating potato chips and laughing because she had a mouth full of chips when she was talking to me. ( Just a tip for you honey, be professional and eat your snacks in the break room) So finally she said, "didn't you sign the paper?" What paper? So she gives it to me and it's basically giving them permission to do whatever they want without permission from you up to $1500. So I did not approve that. I'm not sure who would, but again, this is an emergency hospital and people are in distress with their pets, wanting to do everything they can. Long story short the price went up to $8-10 grand. (After reading other reviews, this is a common number) I totally understand that this would be a complicated surgery, therefore the price reflects it. Today I am still trying to do whatever I can for our Portia. I seen a donation box at their clinic, so I called to see if there might be some type of fund that people have donated to. The girl that answered was hesitant from the start. She said yes there are grants. Each question I asked about this, she kept getting more rude with me. "It's only for people that have exhausted all there resources, it goes by how many people are in your household (but wouldn't give me a number for the income limit) also, it's up to the vet to decide who get grant money, then finally "you HAVE to come to the office to even apply and that we needed to ask about that while we were there. As for the money in the donation box- I'm wondering if this money really goes to help people's pets??? She wouldn't give me an answer, more or less a run around. So my review would be a zero. There was another family in the waiting room crying. But the girl at the desk kept giggling and laughing, eating her chips. I noticed a sign at the desk saying, "be a coworker that you'd want to work with". Ummm. How about, "this is an emergency hospital with people and pets in distress, be compassionate and professional". Also- Blue Pearl, don't respond to my review with "we are sorry for your unfortunate experience, please call the hospital to discuss this" When I talked to the girl about the grant money, she asked if I wanted to talk to the manager Shannon. I said yes. Then she told me that I couldn't because my name wasn't on the account. So I told her my son would call and asked if he should ask for Shannon. Then she told me that they had many managers so he will just have to ask. In my opinion, they give you nothing but a runaround. If you can charge these prices, you should be able to employ professional people and give answers. And the fact that she told me" you have to ask for these grants, we don't tell people about them " Just a tip for those putting cash in the box to assist other people's pets, make sure you know where your good intention money is really going. read more

I had to take my precious pup to Blue Pearl a number of times and the last time was when he passed in my arms on the way there. They tried 5 times to revive him and then so kindly told me they had done all they could. They sat with me, they comforted me, rubbed my back and tried so hard to console me. They were the best!! I wish I didn't have to go there but since I did I couldn't have asked for kinder and better treatment for me and Tanner. I went to the other hospital many years ago only because they were closer and they were horrible and were in it for the money only, So opposite of Blue Pearl. Blue Pearl is the best!! I took my dog here while I was home over the holidays. He'd been having digestive problems for a few weeks and it all kind of culminated at once so I felt he needed to be seen. My experience was great. They calmed me down (even from a distance as I had to stay in my car) and made me feel like I was taking the right steps for Louie. They suggested a few courses of action and outlined the cost for each. They even suggested that if they were me, they'd do option B but wait until I was back with my normal vet as it would be cheaper. They sent him away with a plan for the next week, including some meds & prescribed food, until I'd be back with my normal vet. I wanted to come back here to yelp and review them because I had been a little hesitant based on some of the reviews I'd read but I really thought they were excellent and would recommend if you're in a pinch! read more

Took our puppy to emergency vet at 3 in the morning. Told us basically to just look at her would be $200 right away. Since this was an emergency and the first of the month we are pretty broke told the tech we only had limited funds. She said well we can do a par o test and that's all. Asked about a payment plan something since our 16 week old puppy was extremely sick. Told us she couldn't do anything about it, never saw the actual vet to talk to them but was given a guilt trip that we really need to have our puppy treated, because we obviously didn't know that. Next day went to our regular vet who was willing to work with us and they did tests etc. and unfortunately not good results. Our puppy needed 24 hour care, called this place and let them know everything going on. They said no problem. After about 2 hours it was a bunch of tests ran, we can't do a payment plan, it will be $6000 and if you can't pay we will send you home with your extremely sick puppy and good luck to you. So because we do t have thousands of dollars in the bank, our puppy may die. This is beyond poor. I don't care what you feel toward animals they are family and to be treated this way is horrible. I'm sure our regular vet will come through. But what a poor ethical and morally bankrupt place this is. It's all about their bottom line. Would not go here again. Never had such poor care and people that are supposed to give a damn not. Do not take your animals here! It's a joke! And to Blue Pearl there is no reason to write your basic copy and paste response. Went in for an emergency. No communication. Prices are insane. Charged for something they didn't even use or try. Pushed into making uneducated decisions. We went here as they were the only vet open super late and our dog was having an emergency. On arrival they were quick to take him but were SLOW to communicate anything. We didn't receive any communication until 2hrs later where they proposed a 6 thousand dollar surgery! They weren't even sure that was what he needed. We declined the surgery and they were rude about it. We had them drain his bladder only to hear. They couldn't use a catheter that costed us $200. But said they drained the bladder. Upon arrival at our vet 3hrs later. They had no problem getting several different sized catheters and stated "blue pearl did not even try to drain anything" after we already left with a $600 bill from blue pearl. We left leaving blue pearl like we were killing our dog, that we were wrong for trying to correct what was charged, and over all upset and mad. We will never be back. read more

They do not deserve even one star. I was told my pet needed lifesaving spinal surgery. I had to put up an 8000.00 deposit before they would even take her in, she was paralyzed. When they quickly ran the deposit out of money, they quickly encouraged us out of the hospital after a serious herniated disk surgery. I trusted them, offered to pay what ever they needed if she need to stay. They insisted we go home. She died 42 hours later. Se was only 4 years old, just a baby. While traveling for work, my son called to tell me our 13 yo dog who was already in declining health had lost all of its faculties, whining in pain, and now refusing to eat/drink. We had discussed the possibility of euthanasia next month with our regular vet next month - but they are closed weekends for this unexpected emergency. BluePearl demands an additional, expensive examination in order to consider the option already planned for the privilege of paying triple for the same service due to inconvenient timing. Nice to see the greed of profit being paramount to care and respect to the end of life of a long time companion. Took our dog in as we thought he was possibly bound up from eating something he wasn't suppose to and came out with over a $1000 bill and a diagnosis related to his skull absolutely nothing related to his gut. Uncaring and worried about the money and getting you out the door so they can get the next money making case in the door. Also - they are the only vet I have heard of that won't let you be with your pet during their final moments - claiming COVID is the reason. Worse experience ever. Our beloved 15 year old dog has been declining over the past year. She hasn't been really eating but today she wouldn't eat at all and every time she drank water she threw it back up. By the end of the day she was lethargic and I was worried she wouldn't make it through the night. Went to Blue Pearl, they did not believe me when I talked about her decline. She (the vet) claimed she was not dehydrated but in the notes it said they gave her fluids through an IV at her shoulders. Was that before or after they checked the kidney function? One kidney was enlarged and rounded edges. The vet couldn't say what that meant. The vet kept saying she was a healthy dog. Was she blind? She didn't listen or believe what I said. They gave her a nausea shot and $800 later sent us home. Our sweet dog, came home and curled up in a corner with her tail down. She does not feel good and we received no help from the Blue Pearl. read more

My cat had stopped eating (very abnormal considering he is normally good aggressive), so he was sent here after nothing showed up in an X-ray at my normal vet clinic. He had an ultrasound done, and we decided to do an exploratory abdominal surgery since he had already gone 36 hours without eating and his stomach was still very full. He was taken care of very quickly, and the staff was amazing about sending updates (including pictures). They went over all of his discharge information and answered any questions I had. The staff is very friendly and professional, and they saved my baby boy. That being said, this is emergency vet medicine, so it's not cheap. I thankfully had pet insurance, but be prepared to pay for your fur baby. They do offer care credit (I believe it allows you to split your payment over 6 months with no interest), and they do take people in to a separate room to discuss that so they don't possibly embarrass anyone. Overall, they turned such a scary and uncertain situation into something way easier to navigate! My cat is currently 4 days post op, and his incision looks incredible.
