I'd like to give them lots of stars. The staff weren't unkind, the place is clean, they are open 24 hours but that really is the extent of positive qualities we experienced. Perhaps if our animal was not breathing, or if he was having a near death experience we would have felt differently. Our pet had alarming symptoms that all signs pointed to getting immediate care. We did not get immediate care. When my husband arrived with our cat, his temperature was 104.5 and he was lethargic. Their solution was put them in a cool room. My home is air conditioned. They never came back to check his temp or help lower it. After 2 and a half hours we had to beg for updates and the staff used answers that didn't pertain to our pet when explaining what was happening. Again we had to solicit for answers. I understand short staffing and critically ill patients and having to wait in an emergency setting. I do not understand waiting six plus hours for nothing to have been done and absolutely NO communication that our pet was stable. I do NOT understand dismissing our concerns and not providing basic supportive measures (fluids, anti nausea). I do NOT understand taking our pet for an assessment and not bringing him back and not telling us why and not giving us information that was promised. It was stressful for every one of us. In the end he was stable enough to have waited for our normal vet appointment (which took 1 and a half hours, included supportive measures, xray, and bloodwork read in that time). Communication from the Blue Pearl staff saying he was stable and we could either wait for them but it would take a looooong time OR we could safely take him home and go to our vet would have made this experience exponentially different. I don't mind paying to know he is stable. I do mind being left in the dark. $300 later to have been told it could be a GI issue or it could be anything else is not helpful or warranting payment. We have alternative options lined up for the future if need be. Hopefully this Blue Pearl location can get its act together. She mentioned that seven people were working on him, then asked if we wanted to cremate him for an additional fee. Her demeanor was terrible. I simply requested to have him returned to me. She insisted I leave through the back door, even though the waiting room was empty. There was no reason for me to exit through the back. Naturally, I refused. I regret taking my dog, Charlie, to Blue Pearl after he overdosed on his prescription meds 3/29/25. They required that I call ASPCA ($95 fee) causing unnecessary delays, as I was placed on long holds. Both meds are common, not some exotic plant or unusual med.that may need additional research. Despite having the ASPCA case# it was 2 hours before the Blue Pearl vet called them for instructions...again, they should have been able to treat independent of ASPCA-- *They did not do a CBC or urinalysis as recommended by ASPCA. So, baseline labs were omitted! A blood gas panel was done, likely standard for them. *Flushing out toxins & rehydrating should have been a priority but was not done. Timely treatment is critical in overdoses. I am an RN and familiar with emergency treatment. I gave Charlie peroxide at home to make him vomet, which he did in the car. I used a removable box (part of my car console) to scoop up the emesis, which includied some plastic med bottle. Essentially, they just threw it out rather than check for undigested capsule/pill & retrieve plastic so I could compare with part at home to make sure nothing was missing. No x-ray's were done. Surprisingly, a week later he vomited the cap. After 3 hours I asked for an update; The vet came out & we discussed the dose of Rimadyl (I wasn't sure). Given that Charlie is a 30 lb beagle and my vet is competent, he would not be prescribed a dose for a 100lb dog. There are no other dogs in the house. This is part of triage--tease out information. I could have quickly ruled out the higher dose with a couple of questions. But that would have meant less billable treatment. I decided to take him home. As I was given discharge instructions, they insisted he needed a bolus of sq fliud ($161...again, they should have used the IV port during the 3+ hour stay)-- We left after paying the $1,045.81 bill. Medication fees are more than 3 times what I would pay elsewhere. I was billed for 2 different charcoal products; initially I was told 1 was an admin fee; a 2nd inquiry I was told they are the same product. They were non-apologetic about discarding the box; I still have a hole in my console. Note: there is a small notice they had sitting on a windowsill that they have students in training & may be caring for your pet. There are other emergency vet options in the area. I will go to Metropolitan in Norristown if needed. They actually triage and have adequate staff. I don't mind paying a high bill if it reflects the care given. I have contacted Blue Pearl twice and was given mainly excuses, though they thanked me for giving them the feedback. read more

I feel so sad that this is the closest emergency vet for a lot of people. The "triage" system they constantly blame everything on is a scam. It's an interrogation style situation. You're put in a room and hours go by. When you're completely exhausted and broken, then they present large cost test to you, making you think your pet is going to die. The original issue I brought my pet in for was never addressed, but they found many other things that they thought my pet might have but also weren't sure. I feel like something needs to be done about this being the only option for an emergency vet in the area. Thankfully I had other people with me that encouraged me to leave and get a second opinion. I would STRONLY advise anyone who has a pet that needs specialty surgery to get a 2nd opinion and credentials of the surgeon. This is an absolute horror story. The total bill was unbelievable but I would have done anything for my 6yr old dog. The fact that I no longer have my dog is a emptiness and pain like no other. Original Estimated Costs: $6.4K to $8.1K FINAL BILL: $18k - end result - DEAD 6 year old DOG My 6 year old golden retriever had an insulinoma on her pancreas (a rare condition). After speaking to the oncologist there, we opted to have a CT scan done. The oncologist shared the results of the CT scan with the surgeon and it was deemed that the insulinoma was in a favorable place to be extracted. We were then penciled in the following Wednesday for an appt with the surgeon. The confidence level from the surgeon of a successful surgery was positive and hopeful. She already had us on the surgical docket for the following Monday for the first surgery of the day. There was mention that if she messed with the pancreas too much and "pissed it off" there was a possibility of pancreatitis after surgery, but she didn't seem too alarmed or discuss the seriousness of what could happen. It was supposed to be a Monday surgery, Wednesday we bring her home. MONDAY - Day of Surgery: The CT showed the insulinoma on the left side of the pancreas and the surgeon looked there and couldn't find it. She then looked on the right side and found a hard nodule and removed it. I found that odd and thought of her words "pissing off the pancreas". Now those words haunt me. TUESDAY: Horrible. My dog was nauseas, feverish and breathing heavy. I was told that she may have aspiration pneumonia or pancreatitis was possible. Chest x-rays would be necessary if she was not breathing better later in the day. More meds were ordered and she was being given fentanyl for pain. They increased her GI Support Care. They had put a nasal gastric tube in her because she was not eating. WEDNESDAY: Overnight my dog had been regurgitating, remained feverish which was believed to be from inflammation. Mention of a very expensive drug called panaquel (?spelling) was communicated. the cost was $750 per dose (3 doses needed). This drug would reverse the effects of pancreatitis!!! However, the surgeon did not know much about the drug and did not offer to administer it. My dog wouldn't urinate on the Astroturf makeshift "yard" they offered. The mention of a catheter was discussed put not acted upon. The practice made sure to send me a new estimate of costs for post surgery care for the remainder of the week (through Friday) - $12.8K to $13.5K I went there in the evening to see if I could take her for a walk outside on the real grass, where she urinated for me. We stayed with her for a little over an hour before they came to take her back for her meds. They had started tube feeding her which seemed positive. That evening my dog was placed in the care of the ICU doctor. We went to the practice and met with him while we were visiting my dog. The ICU doctor was very concerned about my dog's well-being. She was still not urinating and her temperature had gone up. He did mention the same "expensive" drug, but failed to offer to administer it. They eventually put a catheter in and 1 liter of urine immediately came out!!! I cannot imagine laying in a crate with that much urine in my bladder. Senseless! She seemed to perk up after the catheter was placed and we felt better about leaving her for another night. THURSDAY - DAY OF HEARTBREAK The ICU Dr. had called in the morning and was concerned. I have written in my notes possible chest x-rays for chest pneumonia and oxygen support, but i do not recall if those were actually performed. He would run some blood work looking for platelet counts and DIC inflammation. New estimate given between $13K to $16K. We went to visit my dog and what I saw broke me. She lay there unable to lift her head, unresponsive to my voice. They administered another drug, and I cannot recall what it was and she started to respond with some energy. It was a sign of hope so we came back home to let her rest. That is the last time I saw her alive. I had faith in the ICU Dr that he would give her his best and I believe he did. A few hours later he called again. Sadie was less responsive after we left. She had some abnormal material in her regurgitation he assumed was related to the severe pancreatitis. I did not make it back to the practice in time to hold her as she passed away. Luckily, I had called my daughter that was closer and she was there. I NEVER want anyone else to live through this rollercoaster of anguish and disbelief. Almost 4 wks since we lost her and the pain I feel today is still as vibrant as that Thursday night. I feel that I should have done more research, got a second opinion, or anything else but to put Sadie through all of that illness and death. read more

I have NEVER had a WORSE experience with a business! By their own standards, which are framed in every room, my dog should have been the most urgent care level. They made us wait 6 hours as he bled through two blankets and 3 pee pads. He was not given any water. People showing up hours after us were seen first and left hours before we did. We were the last people to be seen. Once they finally came to talk to us, they said we could try hospitalization or should think about quality of life. Somehow a dog that unwell isn't important to see until 6 hours later? At the end of the visit I asked for a manager's contact info. I was refused and told they could write a message for one. Don't waste your time at this place. Go to VRC in PA or literally Anywhere else. Even with the hour drive they'll see you quicker and have more compassion for your pet. read more

We visited Blue Pearl when our 10yr old baby Boxer scratched his cornea and it developed into an ulcer. We saw Opthamolgy and had a great experience. He required a procedure that was similar to a debriement...The doc and vet tech were very gentle with my dog and backed off when he got upset during the consultation. They were hoping to not sedate him because of his age and his heart murmur but in the end he did require sedation. When I got him home I could not wake him to get him out of the car and I panicked. I called and they got the vet tech on the phone with me right away and she explained that it was normal for him to be that sleepy. They called back a few hours later to check on him and called again the next morning. We got exceptional care. The bill was pricey, but not out of line with any other vet. Veterinary care is expensive, even more so when it's a specialty or emergency. I would recommend Blue Pearl 10x over. read more

To our surprise our 12 year old dog Bonnie collapsed during a routine walk. We took her to Bluepearl emergency and was told she had heavy internal bleeding from a cancerous mass in her spleen that burst. We were offered an expensive surgical option with a very grim prognosis. She would have surgery, blood transfusion and ongoing chemo after that and MIGHT get 6 more months of life. We decided to euthanize so she wouldn't suffer, we weren't sure she would survive a surgery at her age. The Dr. at Bluepearl saw our struggle and after presenting the bill decided to offer an option where everything (the visit, ultrasound, & euthanasia) were all FREE!!!! We are so thankful to you Doc because having to make this tough decision that took a load off!!! Also, I was in MD at the time while my son was physically in DE at the hospital and the Doctor took her time to speak to me and explain things on the phone TWICE, cause after she left us to talk I had more questions which I thought would be a work around to save Bonnie & keep her here with us. She was so patient. She even offered to keep Bonnie comfortable until the morning if I wanted to come say goodbye the next morning. I didn't choose that option cause I didn't want to prolong the inevitable of what I didn't want to do in the 1st place. So I said my goodbyes via video while my son and his friend pet her and loved on her for the last time. The only reason I rated 4 stars vs 5 is because I was there for 8 full hours (the signs do say that's the possible wait time). Regardless, the doctor really took her time with my dog and I to make sure all needs were addressed, despite being understaffed. They were excellent, we are extremely grateful for all that they did for us yesterday. They made euthanasia more bearable. Even though it was one of the hardest days of my life putting my dog Capone to sleep. They were great with handling my dog with such compassion they really care and making sure he was not in pain anymore while we were spending our last moments with him. They all were so warm, understanding and gentle with him and us the entire time. They didn't rush us at all, they gave us all the time we needed through the entire process. Also the situation was hard enough ,so it was nice to be able to do everything there for my dog. They set us up with the stuff to get him cremated & keep sakes (optional) how I wanted. I didn't have to contact the place myself. And I can pick it all up there when it comes in, I don't have to deal with any 3parties. It makes a difference in a time like that, how you treat people and deal with them going through a hard process. It helped us be able to do what we needed. I even seen a different doctor the day before trying to see if there was anything else we could do for my dog. And she was great too, very friendly and caring. And even though it wasn't what I wanted to hear. She was so caring and explained everything to me so that I could understand and didn't make me feel pressured to do anything or rush me out since she couldn't do anything more for my dog. And I appreciate that because we have been to the VCA hospital a few times with him in the past 6 weeks trying to get answers and treatments. But they we're not helpful or caring like this place. So I will definitely be bringing any of my dogs here if anything ever happens with them. A definite 5stars read more

Since you felt the need to lie and remove my previous review I'll post it again. My original review was left in December of 2020 and is currently in the "not recommended" section so it's not factoring into the reviews and isn't being seen by people that have every right to know how incompetent this place is Let me preface by saying I have worked in the vet med and animal welfare field for over 10 years... Vet Specialty of Delaware was highly recommended before Blue Pearl bought them out. I would not trust them with a stuffed animal now: Don't have an emergency on a Saturday evening. And don't expect this "emergency vet" to actually care for your emergency if you happened to be unfortunate enough to need help on a Saturday evening/Sunday. Not only did I have to take my dog to another vet, who also didn't have adequate staff to treat him properly, but they also caused my dog further harm. They did not do a CBC upon his intake. The x-rays they took before doing any "procedure" show his abdomen had no air or fluid in it. When he arrived at the second vet his abdomen was full of urine and his white blood count was through the roof. Of which the second veterinarian had no baseline because all they did when he got to Blue Pearl in Christiana was a blood chem, and not a CBC. In the vet notes they documented that his blood pressure dropped during a procedure in which they inserted a needle into his bladder to remove blocked urine. This then caused urine and air to leak into his abdominal cavity and put my dog at risk for sepsis and further gross complications from a perforated bladder. A condition they were not able to treat adequately because they didn't have a surgeon on staff. We arrived at Blue Pearl around 10pm on Saturday 12/05. My dog was not seen by an actual vet that could treat him until 10 am Monday 12/07. He suffered because they could not properly care for him despite advertising themselves as a "24/7 Emergency Vet". Your lies could have cost him his life. And have thus cost me nearly $12,000 because he couldn't be seen until multiple days after the initial symptoms presented themselves. I have worked for vets and in the animal field for much of my life. The inflated prices they are charging are outright criminal. $300 for an IV bag of fluids? Really? Charging exorbitant prices for /BASIC/ IDEXX tests? Not even completing basic procedural blood work upon intake? He was there from Saturday night when we arrived at 10pm (nearly at midnight because we had to sit in the car for hours after being told there was a "3 to 4 hour wait"... despite the parking lot being empty) and we took him to another vet Sunday around 3pm. They charged me $1500 for "monitoring and fluids" and further exacerbating my dogs already precarious condition. If you want your animal to receive proper care, regardless of what day of the week it is, please don't take your animal to any "blue pearl" vet office. This is more disheartening because as someone that has worked in the local area for a long time Vet Specialty was once very highly recommend. No longer. Please save your animal needless harm and go somewhere else. As an aside the vet they "recommended" to us that was allegedly equipped to care for my dog ALSO did not have any surgical staff on Sunday.... and it was also owned by Blue Pearl. read more

Shame on this vet practice. My puppy was due to whelp in April. I called beforehand to ensure that we could bring her there if there was an emergency. Sure enough, there was, and we called to tell them that we were on the way. We were told that she could not be seen because there were already too many patients there in the middle of the night. We later learned that there was no veterinarian there that night and that this was the reason that they could not take our emergency case. This is just not okay. For an EMERGENCY VISIT. Then later, they told us the night shift vet would come in at 8, and we'd get helped at 8. WE NEVER SAW THEM EITHER. During all that time, our poor dog fell asleep and when he woke up he looked better, so we left. I came to this location on Nov 3rd because my baby girl had a cough do to tracheal collapsed, unfortunately she was not able to be saved since her enlarged heart was putting pressure on her tracheal and there was nothing else they can do, they were very helpful with breaking the news to me and took very good care of her! Ii just wanted to write a little review about my experience here. This is the second time I've come here and the staff is absolutely amazing. They are kind, compassionate, soft spoken, knowledgeable and understanding. My cat, Tyrone, was in declining health and we needed quality-of-life decisions to be made. The staff listened to our concerns and gave us options without pressuring us into any hard choices. Ultimately we made the hard decision to euthanize our (almost) 18 year old cat. There's no question it was the right decision as opting not to would only prolong his suffering. He was at peace, it was time, and the doctor and techs (I'm sorry I forgot their names) left that decision completely up to us. Thank you Blue Pearl for making this decision mentally easier on us. Blue Pearl has been treating our 7 year old Scottish Terrier for bone cancer. Having gone through five rounds of chemotherapy, we brought her back today for blood work and lung x-rays. I blew my lid when they handed me a bill for $1,008 for bloodwork and x-rays. It was several hundred dollars more than the individual chemotherapy treatments! Like the chemotherapy, I should have asked for an estimate (shame on me). I fully expected to pay around $300 or $400 (pretty standard for bloodwork and x-rays), but was stuck with one triple what I expected. They are like so many other vet facilities. If I could give this place a negative 1 star I would. First off the bed side manner of this place is utterly disgusting. We were away on vacation and our dog needed emergency services. While speaking to them over the phone they were basically forcing us to make a decision to put our dog of 18 years down without any history. They made a diagnosis without running one test single solitary test to back up their claims. When I tried to explain his history and all the accommodations we as a family make for him, the lady pretty much cut me off and continued to push the narrative that they made up with no evidence. My daughter ended her vacation and drove the 7 hours back to collect our dog. No sooner had she got back and we got home our dog returned to his normal 18 year old self - doing all the things he'd done before we left. This place would have had us make an already difficult decision with no evidence of what they were talking about. SHAME ON THEM! And they were nasty about it as well! Side Note: My daughter took our dog to the doctors today and got the tests he needed only to find out he has NO cancer and NO brain tumor. DONT TAKE YOUR PETS TO THIS PLACE! PERIOD! read more

UNACCEPTABLE SERVICE! Me and my mom waited for 4.5 hours and It wasn't even crowded. This is simply another upscale Delaware facility where they charge an arm and a leg for every single thing and will have you sitting around waiting. Then the nurse says, "you're next in order unless another emergency comes!" This place is horrible and i would not recommending It. And then the doctor gave us the most generic diagnosis. $600 for that garbage. This is a scam! DO NOT GO read more
