We had to put our 11 year old dog down on June 11, 2026. Our appointment was at 7 and after taking xrays they found a massive tumor. I cannot describe the amount of compassion that was given to us from the tech and vet. I know their business was closed by the time the procedure was done and they gave us all the time we wanted before we left. One of the worst experiences of my life. Plus I feel they contributed to my dogs death. I took my 8 year old dog there because he was urinating a lot. I asked to have him tested. They kept him for two days they decided he had diabetes and put him on insulin. They told me we would have to check his blood two times a day. Sold me an expensive glucose monitor which they never set up. They sent us home with a monitor with no codes installed and not even batteries. Ultimately I found out I paid 3 times as much as it could have been bought at CVS. I went back a few days later and was basically told to stab his ear twice a day. We are new to the practice but have had an amazing experience. We've used the spa (wonderful) and had our 9-month-old wire-haired fox terrier's shots done here. Middletown Vet also spayed her. It is certainly a busy practice and we've had short waits for appointments, but everyone is always very kind and takes the time with us, as needed. I will not take any of my animals to this vet office ever again. The first time I took my 19 year old cat to MVH, in May 2024, to get her established as a patient near our new home in Middletown, her blood work showed elevated neutrophils. I had told the vet on intake that she had bad breath and no appetite. I was sent home with Mirataz for appetite stimulation. This vet made no mention of even looking in her mouth, no mention of infection, no mention of oral cancer. The second time I took her in, in June 2024, because her appetite wasn't better and her breath was still bad, we saw a different vet. This vet took one look in her mouth and diagnosed her with oral cancer and an infection. She was given a steroid shot and antibiotics. When I called the office for stronger pain medication (I only had gabapentin at home to use when her arthritis acted up), because I had learned that oral cancer is quite painful though cats can hide it well, I waited three days for a call back, all the while calling and texting the front office about why the vet hadn't called me back yet. I gave up and made an appointment for my kitty with her old vet, a 40 minute drive. I called MVH to get her records (in tears) and was told that the vet did call me back THREE DAYS after my initial phone call, but my phone showed NO record of any missed call, and there was NO voicemail. So basically my sweet kitty was diagnosed with a painful cancer and sent home with no pain medications, and my pleading for pain meds or even a phone call got no results. Of course the next available appointment was for three weeks hence. Our old vet saw her very quickly and gave her the pain meds and additional antibiotic she needed to be comfortable until it was her time. read more

Been a while since this happened but it was on my mind so I wanted to share. I moved away from Delaware but took my baby back due to this having been her vet for years and going under anesthesia successfully there for a different procedure. The vet was always very knowledgeable and reasonably priced. She needed her eye removed so I brought her in as scheduled and was given the instructions to come back for her at a specific time. I showed up at said time and the staff was acting like I came in to kidnap my own dog. They said she was not ready to leave and needed to be under observation longer. I informed I was told to be there at that time but if she needed to stay longer then that's fine. They said I could see her in the meantime so I did. While in the visiting room they sent in the tallest, most "intimidating" vet tech they could find and she comes in to harass me about not taking my dog home even though I had already stated I wouldn't be taking her home if she wasn't ready but I was told to come in at this time. It's as if they couldn't accept that they made that mistake. Me showing up at that time was being used to make it seem like I was the irresponsible pet owner who didn't care about my baby's health. During a time of high stress (which it was because my girl was 16 at the time so not all dogs that age come back from the anesthesia) this treatment made me feel extremely frustrated. I am still giving 3 starts because most other encounters were good but this last one was just terrible. Please do better and learn how to treat people better. read more

The staff here are just exceptional, and I'd like to give a special thanks to Dr. Coleman. We recently had to take our senior fur baby in for an emergency visit and they were able to get us in right away. At 10 at night, the entire staff lovingly cared for him and quickly had him diagnosed, treated, prescribed meds, and recommended follow up treatments. Due to the pandemic, we couldn't meet with Dr. Coleman face to face, but she gave us everything we needed over the phone, and was as kind and gentle as she could be, even though the diagnosis itself was not good. We were so grateful for their care! We've been going to them for about 3 years, and they've helped us through putting down 2 of our pets, and were always kind and gentle. They even came to the house for one of them (our cat, who could not travel). These folks understand how much our pets mean to us. We're incredibly grateful we've got such a great place to bring our furry family to in their hours of need. read more

Brought my 16 month old German Sheperd there and after she was given a vaccine within hours she was lame in the front leg. Her paw curled up and she could not stand on it. I sent a video to the office and called to speak to the vet who saw her. The know it all receptionist told me the vaccine has nothing to do with her lameness. "Dont know where she got her medical license!" I told her I need to speak to the vet. The receptionist told me I have to make an appointment to bring the dog in. I called several times over a 24 hour time. Receptionist then tell me the vet was not in....... BOTTOM LINE IS MY PUPPY IS DIED ! If you need more info I filed a complaint with De Div of Profession regulation. #C-VMB-2023-0004 I took my GSD to them for limping, at the 2nd appt, they did an xray and said she would need a biopsy, he would call Saturday with the date and time. They never got back to me. When they finally did the biopsy, it was on an emergency visit. The call that she had cancer, was a mssg to call back because he was gone for the weekend, but noone wanted to tell me she had cancer. That was the only call from that vet. Then it was chemo, then amputation, then both. All from different vets in the same office. When we finally got to the surgery scheduling, they had me bring her back, knowing we'd spent the 3k we'd started with, and needed a month. They performed the pre surgical xray, charged 500+, my guess is thinking it spread and they'd have an excuse to say no, but it didn't, and she was ready for surgery. They then called to tell me that no, they wouldn't take payments. From start to finish during months of visits, it was horrible. No follow through on anything, and no one knows what anyone else is doing. Finally I had to put her down at another vet. Her leg was swelled, I had no money left at the time, and she was suffering. These vets helped none of her issues, from her fistulas, which were still bothering her immensely, to the limping and the cancer. My heart is broken, she was 10 and had many more years ahead of her. There is so, so much more, and it's all in my complaint, and I just can't think about it. But unless it's a quick shots and out, I wouldn't trust them for any follow through, unless you are a referrer, a long time patient, or know them. My newly adopted stray cat escaped from my house, got in a fight with a feral outside and developed an huge egg-sized abscess from a bite wound. I didn't want to spend a fortune on vet care so I drove all the way to Middletown from Newark to see the vet here because I called ahead and their prices were the cheapest. First thing I want to mention is they charge the same exam fee whether your pet is healthy (for just a check up) or whether your pet is sick. Most other vets I've called around charge an extra $10 to $20 for a sick pet! That is gimmicky nonsense! I'm glad this vet does not charge different prices for an exam. Second, Middletown Veterinary was able to schedule my cat for an exam same day at 5:30. It was on Thursday where they had throngs of people lining up for their vaccine clinic. I was 30 minutes late for my appointment because I don't go to Middletown often and did not anticipate all the traffic on the road down to Middletown. On top of that I took a wrong turn and got lost. So I got there late and felt really bad and thought they wouldn't be able to see my cat. The receptionist was very nice and told me it was okay and checked me in with no problems. I waited about 15 minutes after that. I thought this wasn't bad at all considering I showed up late and there were a bunch of people waiting in line to get vaccines. The vet I saw was Dr. Erika Gennusa. I was recommended to see Dr. Besti but since it was a last minute appointment, I didn't get picky. Dr. Erika diagnosed my cat and said usually a huge abscess requires surgery (as in putting the cat under anesthesia and placing a draining tube in) and that would cost hundreds. She decided to try the cheaper option first so she went ahead and lanced the abscess and drained it, gave my cat a steroids shot for pain, and a shot of antibiotics. With the antibiotics in place, my cat's abscess healed within a week. I was also able to get my cat her rabies vaccine and her dewormer during the visit for the same cheap price offered at animal shelters. Other vets charge $10 more for shots and some charge a hidden needle disposal fees on top of that! Overall I got my cat a prompt appointment, small surgery done, and appropriate meds all for $100. I'd say the prices here are extremely fair compared to other vets in New Castle County. I know because I've called around! I also like how the vet didn't jump to running crazy expensive blood tests or recommend opting for surgery immediately. This shows that they aren't trying to gouge my money like a VCA hospital would. I'm giving this place 4 stars instead of 5 though because the exam room wasn't very clean. The exam table had a built in scale in it so I was able to put my cat on it and have her weighed at the same time. This table was cool except I looked in the back and under the table and there was a bunch of cat and dog fur stuck on the back that they didn't clean up. The waiting room also smells like urine (like the SPCA) despite the clean appearance. Looking at all the negative reviews about boarding their pet here, I can imagine the boarding facilities are not kept clean properly! I do attest to the professionalism and the expertise of the vets here though. I'm definitely firing my other vets (I've tried 3 others) and taking both of my cats here in the future. read more

I reserved a suite for seven nights for my two rescue dogs. Both small but the smaller of the two was considered a biter so we got a phone call the third evening they were there. They informed us that they had to move our dogs to a regular kennel room. Jayla weighs 8 pounds and apparently they are not trained on how to handle stressed out dogs. She barked at us when we first met her but calmed sown in minutes and was on our laps. So as a biter that would mean no walks and no human contact which she absolutely thrives on. She is always on our lap or tucked in bed with us. My vacation would have been ruined if it wasn't for my daughter-in-law who picked them up Monday. Luckily she works from home and was able to bring them home and give them the love all of our dogs deserve. On top of that I packed enough food and treats for at least 10 days and asked them to make sure all remaining food and treats were returned. No treats at all and just a little food was returned. I am so impressed with the level of professionalism and care from all of the staff that I interacted with. They took such good care of my boy, and got him feeling much better than he was! Special shout-out to Nikki and also Dr. Galloway, who went above and beyond their normal protocol to help me get everything I needed to make sure my pup was taken care of. They truly are angels in disguise! I will be forever grateful to them for helping me during what was an extremely stressful time to say the least. I miss the old days at this vets office. Once upon a time you could get in and see the doctor within a reasonable amount of time. Now all the staff is chatting and carrying on like they are in their living room. It is exhausting and the wait is ridiculous! I need to find a new place. Even the boarding is a red hot mess. I took my dog March 2 to the vet for his appointment he seen Dr. Amber Galloway she miss diagnosed his what was going on. I've been going to this vet for over 10 years. And my veterinarian FAILED me. Didn't recommend an X-ray. He couldn't walk having problems with his hind legs. The next morning I called back to the office to address my concerns. I was told by one the ride Assistant a bunch of lies about X-ray was offered and I declined. And there was no available appointment for me to be seen. I end up rushing him to the ER to find out that the Arthritis was cancer to the bone and his leg needed to be amputated. So he had to be euthanize. After the ER sent them a report of what happened now they changed the chart to make themselves look good. Sounds like malpractice to me. They needs to change their motto of "best vet" to the "worst vet". read more

I brought my baby of almost 16 years in to be put to sleep. She fought Cushing's and cancer and would have not made it as long as she did without the help of Dr. Johnny and staff. In our final visit we were met with compassion and support as we went through this. We were not rushed through the process. Wow! They reign supreme with us. We've been going here for over 20 years when it was just Dr. Beste in a small shack. They are so good that we live an hour away in north Wilmington and STILL only trust this vet with our beloved pets. I have been disappointed for a few years with their service. I have been a customer for over 16 years . My last straw was when we boarded our dog. I saw the holding section because they were busy taking in boarding animals . The reception area was chaotic so they had me come back carrying my dog because he was scared from all the noise. The dogs were barking and the echo was extreme . When I went back into the holding room I saw large dogs stuffed into small cages . It was dirty and the animals seemed stressed. We left this vet, one animal at a time. They had my bunny as a patient, but when he got sick, sorry ,they said that vet won't be back for a week, " we would probably only have to put him down anyway". We left dog there for her next visit and it was horrible. 1) the vet told me she could not examine her cause she's too fat! - but they didn't mind charging me for a full exam! 2) I asked for her Revolution, and I didn't realize until I got home - 30 miles away, that they gave me 1 tube not one box as they had every time before. This was the last straw. We changed to Atlantic Veterinary. This business needs to either be a boarding location or a veterinar., because they are not doing themselves a favor doing both. The waiting room is always full with people waiting to board their pets and we are all in the same waiting lines. And their staff is very rude! Start to talk to me about what I need and then turn around and answer the person on their staff and back and forth. My dog won't go back with them and has to be carried. This is our go-to Vet. Unfortunately, had to put my dog down about a month ago. The Vet assisted me in what I believe to be the right decision. It was hard but at 14 yrs old, Jack had one hell of a run. Of course, I was crying like a baby. The staff came inside the room to allow me to pay and complete necessary paperwork. They didn't make me go out to the waiting room. They gave me all the time I needed with Jack before the needle. DO NOT board your pet here. When we picked up our cat (Snickers) after boarding him for the long, Thanksgiving weekend, the office was swamped and they ushered us out quickly. It wasn't until we got into the car and really LOOKED at him that we noticed the problems. His fur was matted, as though it had been wet, and he smelled like filth. He also had a wet, brown stain on the side of his mouth that we couldn't identify. We took him back inside, and eventually the people at the front desk were able to track someone down who could provide an explanation. Apparently, our cat didn't take well to being boarded and had been sleeping in his litter. They'd had to wash him, but apparently hadn't done a very good job, hence the matting and the filthy smell. When asked about the brown gunk on his face, they indicated that he also hadn't been eating, and as he has to eat to receive his insulin injections (for diabetes), they fed him some form of diabetic-acceptable, brown liquid (which they then left smeared on his face and which also apparently was missed in the "wash"). I'm willing to accept that our cat might not have the temperament to be boarded. This was our first attempt at boarding, and we only undertook it because of the need for the injections. With that, I'm also willing to accept that there was nothing they could do to prevent him from sleeping in his litter and getting dirty, making a bath necessary. I am not giving this vet a 1-star rating because a boarding facility apparently doesn't know how to give a cat a bath and get him clean the first time (although...really?!). I'm giving them a 1-star rating and suggesting that you NOT board your pets here because not only didn't they call us to tell us that our pet wasn't eating (a huge point of concern in my opinion!), but they also didn't bother to tell us about it (or the rest of the story) when we picked him up. The fact that they didn't call and ushered us out without telling us what happened to our pet tells me that they're either too busy to care or they were purposefully trying to keep it from us, which then begs the question: what else happened that we don't know about? Either reasoning is completely unacceptable. Don't make the mistake we did. DO NOT board your pet here. read more

We recently boarded our Greyhounds for approximately 2 weeks while on an Alaskan cruise. We had a trusted friend call to check on the pups 2 times per week as we had no phone service. Each time she called she was assured that the pups were fine, happy and eating well. NOT TRUE!! Prior to dropping off the pups I called to make sure their suites (adjoining) were ready and was told they were. NOT READY! A dirty left over water bowl was still in one suite and no bedding was provided. I always provide a typed Boarding Form with specific instructions anyone could follow! Here is a list of what was wrong and why we will NEVER board there again! One pup lost 10+lbs and also suffered a severely broken dew claw. The other pup missed 3 doses of her arthritis medication. I left a bag (30) of calming treats to use if thunderstorms were predicted and to give 2 each. There may have been 1 storm and only 6 treats were left! Dental chews to be given on schedule, missed 2 times. Fleece throws for bedding on top of kennel bedding never used. Stuffed toys with our scent on them for calming never used. read more

All the lies he put in writing about me and my dog. Had her wrong BDay, wrong weight, and lied about the surgery he performed on her. I would not recommend this place for a piglet. We moved to Middletown back in 2015. Prior to moving in, I did some research on what vets were going to be close by. When I found Middletown Vet I quickly fell in love with all the services they offered. While talking to the receptionists on the phone, they were very very friendly. With two cats and two dogs, we were happy to find a vet so affordable and close to home. Fast forward two years later and my experience with them is terrible. The last few times I have gone, I have waited for over an hour to be seen. (Shots appointment, another for a nail trim, and check ups.) but that wasn't my tipping point. 40mins - 1 hr, I can do. I understand that sometimes things happen. However, the last time I went, I waited for 2 hours.. yes.. I'm not kidding you. 2 hours. My dog(s) hate the vet, and with the whining and crying, putting them through 2 hours of waiting was ridiculous. I felt terrible. I should have left, but my dog had to be seen for a skin tag. Around the 1.30 mark of the 2 hours, a tech come out to call my name, I assumed I would go back, but nope. She took my information and my reason for being there in the lobby. I told her how much longer the wait is and she said that I would be up next and just a few. She informed me that they were extremely busy and had some emergencies the night before. I told her I understood, however, this isn't the first time I'm waiting for 40 mins. Especially 1.30. She said "oh really?" And could tell she genuinely felt bad. So she assured me I would be next and I waited. In the meantime, there were other people in the lobby who were just as frustrated. One woman near me, (who I saw was there before I checked in), told me her appointment was supposed to be 30mins before mine. Anyways, in the room, I eventually got seen and I talked to the vet about the concerns and he just informed me that they were short staffed those recent weeks. I informed him it's the norm now when I go there and he didn't have much to say and basically repeated himself and apologized. When checking out, I heard the staff speaking about someone else who was unhappy waiting for so long and expressed to them that they could have called her ahead of time so that she could have prioritize her tasks for work. I felt for her but I agreed 100%. The receptionist informed me that they took off 20% of my bill. The gesture was kind, but was it worth paying still 120-140$ and waiting for 2 hours of my time? Nope. The place is definitely not what it used to be. Again, this is my experience, they may have improved their wait time in the last month, but I don't think I will want to find out. I rather pay a bit more to go elsewhere to be seen on time and feel that my pets are just as important as when they have 10 customers or 1000. Over all, if you need emergency visits, this place will be good. The actual care they provide isn't terrible. They are very accommodating and I really enjoy the work they do, however, for normal visits and possibly check ups, I will be going elsewhere. read more

We had a sick dog that wasn't eating and was acting really different - I called and got a 530 pm appt - my wife rushed home after work with the kids so we could hold him and take him in together - when we arrived at vet- she realized she left her wallet in the rush by mistake - I luckily had my checkbook With me but was not planning to put vet Bill on this bank acct - I explained my situation as soon as we got into the receptionist -I exp. that we were planning to put Our Bill on a CC and said if vet services were going to be more expensive than a few hundred dollars could I post date the check for a few days - she said shouldn't be a problem -so we waited - 5 minutes later - she came back to desk,and said manager said "NO" to you post dating your check but if you came get someone right now to send us a picture of your CC - we can do that- ??? Well if We had any access to the Ccard we wouldn't have a issue would we!!! They let us walk out of their clinic with our sick dog over just a couple days on a possible post dated check! We live 45 minutes away so we could not just go get it and return BTW I am a law officer my Wife is a Teacher - we are both respectable professionals - We both left upset and very worried about our dogs well being including our kids! read more

I have never boarded my dog here. I have had nothing but good experiences with after hours emergencies and regular visits. The staff is knowledgeable and informative, letting you make the right decision for your pet. The prices are super reasonable. I really can't say enough good things about this place. I know that an emergency is scary and it really helps to know that they are open during those hours to make my puppy well. read more
