The park has plenty of paved parking and nice shallow boat ramps that have enough room to reverse your trailer properly. There are also some public restrooms here. The launch is close to a number of marinas where you can purchase fuel, snacks and other stuff you'll need as you spend the day on the Lake. Lake Wylie was first formed in 1904 when the Catawba Power Company built the Catawba Dam and Power Plant near India Hook, impounding the Catawba River. In 1924, the Southern Power Company raised the level of the dam which increased the surface area of the lake from 668 acres to over 13,400 acres. Now the Wylie Hydroelectric Station, it is operated by Duke Power Company. The Catawba Nuclear Generating Station is also on the lake and uses it for cooling. I understand the desire to keep it "natural". But you can have signs made from wood. I had my somewhat heavy gear on when I walked in 102 degrees heat to the tallest zip line tower only to be told it wasn't available to me with only a day pass. So I trekked across the park to another tower to be told the same thing. I then headed to one they said I could go on, only to miss the entrance. It's behind a building with a sign that said forest or woods, but not zip line. By the time I spent an hour walking w/the heavy ropes and clips in the sun and heat, I was near heat stroke. My face was beet red. To their credit, two employees asked if I was okay and wanted to sit down. They pointed to the nearest water fountain. I did drink water throughout the day and tried to stay hydrated. The park was very clean, lots to do, friendly and helpful employees. I wrote this to emphasize not everyone is good with a map and signs are truly needed. People asked me which way to places. So, I wasn't the only one who got turned around. Parking is $13.

I've visited this lake for years...starting with when my son was a toddler. We had picnics by the lake, where you can see many birds, like Ducks and Geese (and possibly even Swans in the past...but can't recall?)! Not sure if it was prohibited back then, but I remember feeding these birds. Quite the scene with the massive number of birds here! Anyway, fast forward several years to now, we've hit this area primarily for walking...initially with my husband or a friend. Recently, we even took Sheebs, a pitbull puppy that lives next door. We consider ourselves Aunt and Uncle to Sheebs...and she's quite the active pup, so she loves the walk. We normally walk on Riverview Trails, but we took her to this WInthrop Lake area...and she seemed to love it as well. In a way, I thought it was better for a wild puppy like her...because the walking path here is much wider...and although there are leashed dogs on walks, there aren't as many as Riverwalk Trails. Anyway, for years, we've thoroughly enjoyed this lake and its surrounding walking path...and I felt I should give it some just due.

I found that the variety of shooting facilities,…read morecoupled with very strict safety rules and their enforcement, requirements to meet as a six month long membership candidate and the involvement of the membership on cleaning and maintenance days greatly exceeded what other ranges had. You pay annual dues that can be adjusted by age and by work you do for the club. The dues keep the rif-rafs out and the club gets a break on insurance because rules are uniformly maintained. It is a safe range for all the items mentioned, so members bring their family members in to learn about proper behavior as they participate in shooting sports. Trap and Skeet shooting ranges in a separate area just for shotguns. A rarely found around 300 yard range, which is great for hunters that want to zero scopes at 200 or 250. A do-it-yourself assault range which are four enclosed on three sides areas where you set up targets, perhaps a scenario, and enjoy shooting rapidly or in some other way not allowed on other ranges. A Five-stand shotgun course whereby you fire from a fixed point and targets are thrown from behind you, left and right, high and low, and fast and slow presentations. In Matthews there is a separate indoor firing range that you can access 24/7 with your membership badge. Many special programs for women & youngsters. Very professional, very safe.

The horses and ponies are beautifully groomed and happily trot any nervous or experienced rider around the ring. The party is heavily focused on riding and that was such a treat with the children. No one was bored as there was plenty to do and see on the property with happy cats, a friendly dog, and over 40 horses to watch frolic in their paddocks. Once the party starts, Terrilynn truly helps you keep the momentum going and the event space is so cute. It was beyond a five star experience and not one of our 23 guests was bored--ever. Not one thing I would change. A truly amazing experience for children and parents alike. Thank you, Terrilynn, for hosting Regan and her friends. You and your outstanding team have outdone yourself.
