We bought a used folding rocking chair that was showing signs of age. We really liked the chair because it's compact and doesn't take up a lot of space. We took it to Bob Arkus and asked what he could recommend. He happened to have some sample fabrics around that he showed us and we chose one--very nice and high quality. He also said he knew someone who could sand and refinish the wood before he redid the upholstery. He gave us an estimate and when we went to pick up the chair when he called in a few weeks, it was about the price he had estimated. The chair is now perfect for our home--built in cushions are comfortable and fabric is plush and new. Wood looks new! We are very pleased as it's hard to find a folding rocking chair of this size (which perfectly fits all the members of our family). I have a cast iron bed from Sicily that will probably last forever, now that Bob and his team replaced the cheap particle board on the headboard with real plywood. I got this bed over 20 years ago, but after my first move, the cheap headboard already broke. I'm glad I saved it all these years, because now that I'm finally settled and not moving around so much, I found Bob Arkus, and they were able to fix it. He gave me a discount for me getting my own material at Walmart (he has a lot of fabrics, but I couldn't find one that quite matched my original). And he was able to save/reuse the buttons. This headboard completes the whole look of my bed, and now it's like new again, but better and stronger! Once I got it back and was about to put my bed together a couple weeks later, I found something not quite right (understandably, with this being a unique headboard/bed). I was able to bring it back. The guy who originally helped me remembered me right away and was happy to get the issue resolved. I stepped out, did some errands, came back, and it was done. This team really cares about the quality of their work and making their customers happy. I'll go back to them in the future with any upholstery needs I might have. read more

As good as new! We inherited a dining room set that is over 50 years old. The foam in the seats was disintegrating and falling out of the bottom like sand. Bob took one look and knew exactly what needed to be done. Upon opening one chair up, he said that the webbing inside was still in good shape so it didn't need replacing. It took us about a month to decide on a fabric that we liked and Bob was very patient and helpful along the way. We settled on a trim similar to the original and he reupholstered all eight chairs. They also did some refinishing on the woodwork which had been chewed by a small dog. Very professional and knowledgeable, we had total confidence in Bob and his crew. We are very happy customers! He has a showroom above his nice shop where you can search through a huge variety of fabric swatches, and he encourages you to borrow them to see what works best in the piece's environment. BAD BUSINESS!! STAY FAR AWAY! Don't be fooled by the name, Bob Arkus is a Total Scammer, Extortionist and has NO Integrity as a business owner. No room for slimy scoundrels such as this on Oahu! I first emailed Bob some pictures of car seats that I had interest in having recovered. I didn't get a response within a couple business days so gave him a call. Bob answered the phone and was agreeable in recovering my seats. He seemed excited about the job and stated: "I got my start doing custom auto interiors, sounds like a fun job". Without any demands or constraints from me, he offered a timeline of 2-3 weeks and a quotation which was $1000 higher than his competitors for the labor of recovering my seats (I had already purchased the materials to recover the seats which he approved of), and I agreed to the higher price without negotiating a more reasonable price. He asked me to bring everything to him "sooner than later" so that he could get started. My wife and I took time off from work a few days later to bring him the seats and fabrics to allow him to start the job. Bob seemed like a friendly guy and seemed pleasant to me and my wife at that time. We spent about an hour going over the job: stitching for the seats, pattern choice and he made several recommendations that I accepted. After we had concluded our discussion on the project and were on the same page, we shook hands in agreement on terms and conditions of the job. I asked him if I needed to leave a deposit or any payment. He stated "no, I like to have the carrot at the end of the job". He then said, I'll text you progress pictures in a weeks time. Three days later, Bob emails me and states he is raising the price of the labor by $1500 when no terms or conditions had been changed since we last shook hands and parted ways. I had not at any time requested a short timeline or patterns other than what we discussed in person and was okayed by him before shaking hands. The last event that had taken place is when my and my wife spent an hour discussing the job, him shaking my hand and said that everything was good move forward as agreed. Despite this blatant offense of him choosing to discard his word as a business owner, his handshake and attempted extortion, I responded in a calm professional manner asking him to reconsider our visit three days earlier and reminded him that we spent an hour going over the job, and ultimately, he okayed everything prior us shaking hands and me and my wife leaving his business that day. I informed him that I was unable to increase my budget an additional $1500 for labor, especially since I had asked no more of the job than when we had last met and shook on the job. In a most childlike and bullyish manner, Bob responded with the message "Sorry, cannot. Seeya!!" I chose to respond in a more mature manner and decided to take the high road. As by his actions, I could clearly see his endorsement of corrupt business practice and did NOT want or trust him doing ANY job for me. I simply told him no worries and that I would be by in the next couple days to pick everything up-which I humbly and quietly did. Needless to say, I was most disappointed to realize that not only is Bob Arkus not a man of his word, a man of no integrity but furthermore that Bob Arkus practice of extortion and corruption is deemed acceptable and commonplace in running his upholstery business on Oahu. Do the honest upholstery business owners on Oahu a favor and use their services. DO NOT PATRONIZE THIS SLIMY AND CORRUPT scoundrel BOB ARKUS, WE MUST RUN HIM OFF THE ISLAND!! This review letter is also going to the Governor, Better Business Bureau and Oahu Business Licensing and Registration Division. A couple more experiences such as this sent to these officials will be sufficient to have the business license of Bob Arkus revoked permanently. We have a very nice queen-size sofa sleeper in our rental condo in Waikiki and it is getting old and the foam seat cushions were breaking down and getting flat. I googled where to take foam cushions for re-stuffing and made a few calls. It seemed like most places focused on vehicles and boats. Bob Arkus looked like he worked on vehicles, boats, and furniture. Finding his shop on Sumner St near the K-Mart on Nimitz was a little difficult. It's in the very back of a business complex, and the signage isn't very clear. You just have to go all the way to the very back and it's back there. The Costco parking lot is over the back wall. We brought in the two bottom seat cushions to be re-stuffed with new foam. We were advised on the correct foam combination to use, given an estimate of $600, and given a finish date in 2 days. Sure enough, right on target, we got a call that the cushions were done. They are AMAZING, and just like new. It's given our sofa a whole new life and it was absolutely worth it. If you need any kind of high-quality, professional foam or upholstery work done, I can highly recommend Bob Arkus. He really knows upholstery. read more

We have a classic sofa and chair that we purchased in 1972 (47 years!!) that needed upholstery. The pieces truly are classic and needed an expert to do the job right. Arkus was right for the job. Bob researched fabric (to be expected) but he also found replacements for the metal legs which had corroded badly. He even was able to salvage a little wood piece that was part of the original legs and insert them on the replacements. The pieces look fantastic ... just as they did in 1972.
