Just went in today which is the first time since right after Bob-o sold the store. Well, I may have some bias since a friend told me in the late 80s that this is the place for subs and one worker even had her daughter in my math class years ago: first sign was after selling that the workers I've known for decades, didn't seem happy This was about four months back Today I went and didn't recognize anybody I think this would've been full proof if you just maintain suppliers and just did what you been doing at that location for decades. Long time staff gone first sign. I felt like the ingredients for the meat aspects and cheese in the subway the same. Totally skimpy, onions, green peppers, and the rest which is helped make it more robust The bread was decent (supplier change in Chicago is nuts with Turano, Liborio, etc) and all the rest but seemed really small for the original meat cheese level, so what are you saving two cents a sandwich? Final kicker that was that not many were personable, and then it took forever to get other people stuff out let alone mine, and Bob o would've fired many of them because they couldn't get their Sammiches together. I ordered from them through Grubhub. After 1.5 hours I was still waiting. I called the restaurant. They were so nice! They told me they had been trying to get a hold of Grubhub. They remade my food. They then called me when they had gotten ahold of Grubhib and told me that a new driver would be assigned and apologized, even though they did nothing wrong. These guys are awesome! Never once have I had an attitude from any of them. They are always cheerful and start and end the order with a smile and always double check to make sure everything anyone orders is there. This is the perfect sport for a quick bite to eat. Without a site like Yelp, I never would have heard of BOR, much less ventured to Portage Park to partake of its sandwich-y delights... and that would have been a shame for both of us. This is old-school Chicago at it's City-of-Big-Shoulders finest. First of all, there's a parking lot -- a decent sized one. Even though you can, likely, find parking up and down this stretch of Central, the convenience of the lot (and reality that public transit in this neighborhood is a bit more difficult than others)is certainly welcome. After you've parked, walk in and take a second to peruse the menu board. You don't need that time because the options are so vast (there's a decent selection but not overwhelmingly so). You need it because it will transport you to the past: I remember coming to places like this with my dad when I was a kid... and that's a sweet memory. After taking a moment, refocus on the reason why you're here: to pig out. I went for the Italian sub with everything. For less than $6 (!), I got a yooge sub on wonderfully chewy Italian bread packed with salami, capicola, provolone cheese, pepperoni, harm, Italian dressing, lettuce, tomato, onion, green pepper, and pickles. For.less.than.$6! You can't beat that. You can't. Because the sandwich wasn't enough (it totally was), I also ordered cheese fries: crinkly fries doused in bright-yellow cheese sauce. It ain't fancy; it's just delicious. And, to top the meal off -- and I am most excited about this -- I had the option of drinking NEHI LEMONADE (NEHI!!!!! WIN!!!1!!!) but I simply could.not.resist ordering. Splice. Yes, Splice. SPLICE!!!! I FOUND AN OFF-BRAND LEMON-LIME SODA THAT'S A COMBO OF SPRITE AND SLICE! SPLICE! SPLICE!!!111!!!! They open at 10am! So perfect when you've got morning errands and can stop for a sammie to go for later! I loved the sandwiches I tried here. Lunch was so good, I came back another time for a dinner sandwich! I tried the Italian Sub (small) which was probably a 9 inch sub and was so filling! Cotto salami, capicola, pepperoni, ham, provolone cheese and Italian dressing. The ingredients were fresh and it's made to order. I would have liked more Italian dressing, but that's just me. Dinner sammie was a Roast Beef on a Roll. Also a good portion size filled with lean Roast Beef, lettuce, tomato and mayo. It was tasty and all ingredients fresh as well. Next time I'd ask them to go easy on the mayo as I felt there was just too much of it, but otherwise a solid sam. Service was nice. The digs are totally dated cafeteria style but clean. When I get a "hankerin" for a Sub Sammie I come here. The best on the NW side of Chicago. Lots o' choices of sandwiches. The meat is always fresh and plentiful. The French Bread is soft, chewy and ooooh so bad for you white bread. (which makes it oh sooo good!) Prices are very reasonable. Counter service always fast and friendly. They offer daily, homemade, yummy soups choices. I have eyed the cheese-fries go by, and they look extra, dangerously good. It's nice to know that some things haven't changed .I went back back to Bob O's for the first time in many years, and to my surprise, the Subs were as Yummy as ever. I've been going to this place for 5 years and tonight was my last straw. When the sandwiches are made correctly, they are quite good. However, tonight, for the FIFTH DAMN TIME, the sandwich that I asked for with "no pickles" came loaded with pickles. It even says on the receipt "NO PICKLES" right under my sandwich order. My wife says she asked the woman who made the sandwich twice if there were pickles on the turkey and ham and she said "no". WTF? The killer part is that it's been different employees doing this. One guy did it three times to me and now two different employees have done it once. The other times I brought the sandwich back to get it made correctly. Today I've driven over 70 miles for work and I don't want to get back in the car. I just wanted to eat my damn sandwich. It's not worth it. I'm done with Bob-o-rino's. These are very good sub-sandwiches. You get very generous amount of meat and toppings. The only thing that could improve could be the bread. I found the bread to be a little chewy. A great addition would be if they had a toasted version of the sandwiches, this would solve the bread issue. Aside from the bread issue mentioned above, everything else is very good. I've lived in the neighborhood practically all of my life and I just started going to Bob-O-Rinos about two months ago. Not sure why... just never thought of it. I'm glad it finally crossed my mind (mostly because I saw it on TV) because I'm tired of the Subway and Potbelly sandwiches already. I like old school original subs. I like the subs here. The fries are good too. My son likes the paninis. I only wish they were open a little later. Costello's has these guys hands down on bread and sandwich filler combinations. The service was not great. I was treated to short, curt questions and my son to sidelong looks. It wasn't until I went to pay that I was told it was cash only, and the ATM in the restaurant was a ganky affair. Why is it that I'm printing out a receipt for them to pull cash from THEIR drawer in order to withdraw money from MY account? And why would you force the customer to do that when you could have set up the key pad/card swipe right there at the checkout? In any case, I'd be able to forgive them this if A) they didn't get my order wrong and B) the meal was better than mildly adequate. I've been eating at Bob-o-Rinos since I was a kid and THANK goodness my parents knew the good stuff. This is my favorite place in the city for a perfectly cold afforadable sub. I'm a fan of the turkey - fresh meat, fresh lettuce, green pepper, onions and pickle, mayo, cheese! And the bread--- it MAKES the sub. YES, critics, it's chewy. I dont think it demands 5 more chews than your average bread and with it's texture and freshness, are such complaints warranted?? I think not.
