Bobbie's is a rite of passage for Nashvillians, a '50s style fast-food, walkup stand from yesteryear that draws long lines of eager customers. Serving a diverse menu of American classics from old-fashioned hamburgers and hot dogs to creative dairy treats, Bobbie's has been in business since 1951. In fact, known as Harper's Dairy Dip until 1986, this is the third oldest eatery on one of America's longest roads (Highway 70) in continuous operation (fourth oldest overall). The good thing is that you'll enjoy your experience, there is plenty of outdoor seating, and the service is always excellent. Employees stay positive and relaxed despite the stress of growing lines and constant orders coming in. The downsides include long lines, notoriously impossible parking, and average food. Even the soft serve ice cream isn't good, and that's difficult to mess up. I ordered a Heath Swirlie over the weekend, and I could barely find any toffee. And the soft serve just wasn't good. The allure is that Bobbie's has been around for over half of a century. Being that it is a summertime staple, that doesn't necessarily mean that the product is as wonderful as one would hope that had kept it in business for all these years. They offer burgers, malts, fries, shakes, splits, and ice cream itself. The menu is extensive, but despite its bragging rights of an extensive menu, a lot of it doesn't taste like it has variety. For example, I will order their Memphis Mafia. It includes peanut butter, ice cream, and bacon. Sounds delicious, right? They are cheap on giving you chunks of bacon, the vanilla ice cream is all you can taste, and the peanut butter flavor is miniscule. It is basically vanilla ice cream with limited flavor profiles of the other ingredients, which sucks because it should taste really good! The idea is there, but the flavor profile is not. You can't go wrong with the basics if that is what you seek. If you want a vanilla shake, they have you covered. As far as getting creative, I would go elsewhere. It just isn't worth the try knowing ahead of time that they're stingy on giving you more flavor for what you pay for! What is good, you ask? The burgers are good and the fries are most of the time. Sometimes, the fries are overly seasoned and that can turn some people off. I usually appreciate it because I like sweet and salty. Sticking a fry in ice cream isn't uncommon for me to do, but you're also hearing this from someone who puts ranch on her pizza. Parking is a nightmare. You're basically asking for your death wish if you park in front of the establishment and have to back out into traffic on Charlotte. If you don't want this problem, park on the side of the building on the street. You won't have to stress about Charlotte by making this choice, but parking might be limited. Seating is outside. It is covered with park benches. Don't have expectations for the bathroom. Again, it's an old joint and people come here for nostalgic purposes. It's a good place to bring your family for a no frizzles ice cream place. read more

This place is pretty neat, but I don't necessarily understand the long lines. The shakes are pretty good, but nothing mind blowing. We waited roughly 20 minutes in line to order and got three shakes, the prices were fairly reasonable. The left me wanting more from it in terms of flavor and it just lacked the depth I was expecting. Next time, I think I'd opt for an ice cream and perhaps go for a burger. The location of this place is absolutely perfect - right after a damn hot level hot chicken meal from Hattie B's, just walk yourself straight over to Bobbie's Dairy Dip to cool off with a soft serve cone or milkshake. I always treat myself with a small or kid size vanilla soft serve cone dipped in chocolate - the chocolate crackles so nicely, and even though the ice cream really doesn't taste like vanilla at all, it is so nostalgic and comforting. The owner is super friendly, the service is quick and we've never had any issues with our orders. I had the chance to try Bobbie's on a Saturday afternoon and I'm so glad I finally did! My boyfriend and I decided to stop and get some ice cream while we waited for our online order at Hattie B's. We parked in Hattie B's parking lot and walked over next door to Bobbie's. Luckily the line was short, and it didn't take too long for us to order. We both ordered large vanilla cones, but mine was covered in rainbow sprinkles and his was plain in a waffle cone. I prefer soft serve ice cream, so I really liked my cone. It is reminiscent of a McDonald's ice cream cone in my opinion. There was plenty of seating at their picnic tables on both sides of the building, so we sat outside and enjoyed our cones. I don't love Bobbie's, and it's honestly because I've been spoiled by soft serve in Quebec where I'm from (it's way more smoother, with the thickest, richest chocolate coating you could ever imagine). Now, don't get me wrong, this isn't BAD. The thing is, there's just one flavor of chocolate dipping (milk), and it SUPER thin. I prefer a THICK coating of chocolate, and in Quebec you can get about 10 different flavors of chocolate coating. The soft serve is also a little granular, but nothing hugely noticeable. Of course, though, this is what's available here, and it is a fun little treat to have on a hot day. I will say, though, I ordered a cup of soft serve with chocolate and was initially given the ice cream without the chocolate. The proportion of oice cream to sprinkles was great, although I think some other people would've liked more sprinkles in their Ice cream cup. Bobbie's is an absolute local staple!! I've been coming here since I was a kid and without fail, their busiest time is summer nights but it's worth the wait. They have some of the best milkshakes in town and they've got a decent variety of choices. I haven't had their food in years so I can't speak to it, but I always get a chubby checker milkshake (chocolate and peanut butter) and it is delicious every single time! There's a few parking spots on the side of the building, otherwise you can park in the Hattie B's overflow or sometimes people will park on the street. I've been meaning to try Bobbie's forever, but I'm usually put off by the (sometimes) lengthy outdoor line and rather precarious, slanted parking situation. We happened to nab a great (slanted) spot on a Friday evening right next to the Dairy Dip. After a birthday party, we wanted to close out with some delicious soft-serve. I love that they do an awesome fudge-dipped "magic shell-style" cone here, and I indulged in one with vanilla ice cream. It certainly hit the spot, especially with the addition of some chili cheese fries. They actually use real, shredded cheese here and not the liquid, plastic stuff of modern-day fast food or retro bowling joints. I love everything about the mid-century ambiance here, from the pastel hues to the intercom system wired up to call your name. The clientele is as diverse as West Nash, and I'm living for it. You'll see everyone from new couples and babies to grandparents with their grandkids from various backgrounds. This is a true summer joint, and it's always lovely to see people out enjoying a frozen treat, classic diner burger, or chili-cheese what-have-you in the middle of the humid summer. I will take soft-serve over regular, hand-dipped ice cream any day of the week, and Bobbie's had some of the best I have had in recent memory.
