My wife and I had a delightful time visiting Calfkiller Brewery in Sparta, TN and then thought BBQ would be a fitting end to our little day trip. We found BobbyQ's around 1:00 PM on Friday, 10/13/17. The date should have been the first clue. The fact that the place was full seemed to be a good sign. My wife had the BBQ beef and said it was probably a good cut of meat, but tasted (and had the texture) of meat that had been prepared about three days earlier. And, it wasn't brisket. Her white mac n' cheese was okay, but not okay enough to finish. The slaw was just that - nothing special. I had the pulled pork. It was extremely dry. The sauce didn't have an impact. The baked beans were odd at best and seemed to be loaded with onions or onion powder. The fries were okay. The bread was the best part of both plates. We had to insert a drinking straw into the sauce on the table to "cook" it out of the bottle. I'm sorry I did that. Their hot sauce was moderately spicy, but didn't help the meal. Visiting a buddy in Cookeville, and had dinner here! Very excellent service. Our waitress (Tasia?) was particularly attentive and friendly. The meat was very tasty, with a rich smoky flavor. A little on the dry side for my tastes, but I like a lot of sauce, so it wasn't a problem for me. A weirdly excessive amount of dressing served with my salad. Great fried okra! We ordered bbqbeef sandwich and the meat was DRY. My wife poured the green bean juice on the beef to help moisten, did not work. We ate it because we were hungry and had travelled all day. I don't know what that sauce was, worst ever, won't even come out of the bottle. No offense, maybe this is Tenn BBQ. As my wife said, we've never had bad bbq, until tonite. Now we know. WOW! I was skeptical at first because this place had mixed reviews, but I was very pleased with my choice of where to eat. I got the Bobby Q's sampler with ribs, pulled pork, and brisket. The pulled pork wasn't anything super special, I would say that it was just as good as about any other pulled pork I've had. The things that stuck out to me the most were the brisket and the ribs, honestly some of the best I've had outside of Memphis and Nashville. We stumbled upon this place while we were downtown and decided to get dinner to go. We ordered 2 of their combo plates and one mustard catfish plate. The atmosphere of the place is great! They have a lot of Harley memorabilia that is cool! I will say that this is the cleanest restrauant I have even been it! The place was spotless! We only dealt with the cashier but she was extremely nice and helpful with the menu! Now on to the food. With the combo plate you get a couple ribs, pulled pork and beef bbq. I have to be honest... The pulled pork was ok but didn't have a lot of flavor. Same with the ribs. The beef bbq is NOT brisket like I thought. Picture Arbys sliced roast beef meat and put a little sauce on it. It was really not good at all... But I will go back and try the pulled pork and ribs hot rather than take out. The coldness could have been the issue. ALL of the sides were PERFECT!!! they were so good. We tried the potato salad, the cole slaw, the baked beans, hush puppies, baked potato. All of it was superb! The hush puppies were delicious and crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside!! The reason I gave them 5 stars is for their mustard catfish!! This was the best catfish I have even had!!! The crunchy crust was mouth watering! The fish was flaky and cooked perfectly! It had an awesome flavor! We will be back again and again for the catfish! Forget about the bbq. Lol... Good eats! We were visiting this town and decided on this small place and I am happy we did. Kayla was very informative on the menu, great service and very friendly. My father asked all about the place and she knew the history of the restaurant. (They have been in business since mid80's) the small restaurant has a light rustic feel, nothing fancy and is very clean and good seating. We were there at an off time (3:45) and the place was half full, so we took it as a good sign. As for the food, I had fried catfish, steak fries and coleslaw. The catfish has a light cornmeal coating, good crunch and very tasty. The shredded coleslaw had a light creamy dressing with a nice sweetness. Mom had the BBQ chicken, fried okra and a huge sweet potato. The half chicken had a good "mopping sauce" and needed no other sauce. It was very moist, very tasty. My father had the BBQ ribs and beans. The beans have shreds of meat and a light kick from peppers, very tasty and not the ordinary BBQ beans. The ribs were very tender, great flavor and had a mopping sauce on them as well. No other sauce needed! (Actually we never even tried any of the sauces, so that is a good sign of BBQ imo) My father BBQ's a lot and is usually disappointed with others BBQ. Well, he is already planning to stop there on his next drive through, so that tells ya something! My husband had the smoked meatloaf and he said it was outstanding. All in all, this place fit all of our desires for a good, filling meal. The portions are shareable size, so I would suggest each getting something different to try a little of everything. They don't have an huge menu, and frankly I think that's good a good thing. One thing to try on the next visit will be the fried BBQ chicken (Smoked chicken that is fried, really? That has to be a rare eating thing. Sounds like Paula Dean has dropped by.) This must be a popular locals place because when we left, the place was packed and four loads of people coming in!
