Bob's Red Mill was suggested to me years ago by my cousin in Connecticut. She does a lot of baking. She wanted to help me find grains better for my diabetes. I started by trying the Oat Bran. Bob's is very good but I had to give up oat bran and corn since stomach surgery. My food allergies also add to my horrible gas and bloating all the time!! Today my Oatmeal is arriving. I got four big bags of Bobs for $25 on Amazon. I'm sure it will last me a while. I pray it tastes as good as the Bob's Oat Bran and as good as the Amazon Oatmeal that's always out of stock! I am at the age where I need to seriously look after my health. What I don't do or think of, my dear wife fortunately does that thinking for me. We normally eat hot cereal in the mornings, and recently while shopping - saw again the very familiar bags with the Bob's Red Mill... and this time the wife took a look. Yup, we've seen the TV commercials and more, but never considered it. We regularly eat cream of wheat which luckily I enjoy, after I add preserves of one type or another, plant-based butter (how cool iz dat), and organic certified to be real honey. The wife adds blueberries to hers, which I absolutely canNOT eat (allergies). This Bob's Red Mill Old Country style muesli doesn't taste too much different from eating grits, and it's just a wee bit longer in cooking than both the other hot cereals. Once I add my regular ingredients, it tastes the same but jes a wee bit grittier. That's what my body needs anyways, so who cares? I DO think the wife will be buying this for years to come! What a cute spot! It has everything! Lots and lots of variety of items, the best damn freshly baked sourdough you've ever had, the cutest kitchen gadgets and the convenience of an on site little deli/bakery. The prices are reasonable depending on what you purchase. I did see a few items that were nearly double the cost you'd pay at your local grocery store but anything "Bobs Red Mill" brand is reasonable. Note to all tourists: Bobs does a great job of featuring quite a few local to Oregon products so please peruse them whole store. I haven't done the tour but plan to. Onto the food. Service here was excellent and the food was crazy fast. However, the food was a bit lacking. I got the biscuits and gravy with sausage and felt like it needed a lot of added seasoning, just very bland. Biscuits were delicious though! My fiancé had the chicken and waffles and it was a bit dry. Chicken not crisp but more so soggy. I likely wouldn't come back for the food but 100% would come back for the goodies! read more

One of my recent favorite foods is steel cut oats. Steel cut oats are made by taking the oat groats and cutting them into 2 to 3 smaller pieces using a steel blade. Steel cut oats are also sometimes called Irish oats. Toasting steel cut oats gives them a delicious nutty flavor that sets them apart from other types of oats. Steel cut oats are also more coarse than other types of oats and tend to be chewier. This gives them a hearty texture that is very filling, but it does mean they require longer soaking and cooking. Rolled oats are made by flattening and steaming them rather than cutting them with a steel blade. As a result, rolled oats require less cook time than steel cut oats and are sometimes called "old-fashioned" rolled oats. This is a review of their free mill tours they do on weekdays (see separate review for their store/restaurant location at that business listing on Yelp). They only offer the tour on weekdays at 10 a.m. (holidays excluded), but it's free, which is great. The tour lasted about 60 minutes and was very informative about the history of the company, their products, and their processes for sourcing, milling and packaging the grains. Every employee we encountered, from the security guard at the front desk, to the lady who checked us in and another lady who was our tour guide were very friendly. They even give you some free samples at the end of the tour (on our tour we each received some of their new chocolate protein powder and a package of muesli). They also have a small gift shop at the end of the tour which has many items not available in their main store a mile down the road. And they give you a coupon to use at the store or online as well. read more

I'm in love. I'm a baker and this store was amazing. They had so many different things that I can't find in my local whole foods. They also have a lot of Oregon specific products, fruit syrups/jams. The bakeware/kitchenware is much more expensive than say " Amazon", so I'd skip that. The ingredients are the main draw. Originally my plan was leaving Portland on Sunday, but eventually I decided to stay one extra day and the result of this unintended decision was having an opportunity to tour Bob's Red Mill packing facility. This free tour is available at 10 AM (doors open at 9:30 AM) from Monday to Friday. THIS IS A PACKING FACILITY WITH A MINI GIFT SHOP AND NOT A SHOPPING STORE! The actual whole grain store / restaurant / bakery is located about one mile away from the packing facility (5000 SE International Way, Milwaukie, OR 97222). Once you step into the building, you can wait at the guest room and watch few clips about Bob's Red Mill as well as check out various Bob's Red Mill products display on the tables. The tour started with a 5-minute intro video and later our tour guide talked about whole grain manufacturing processes (the facility is separated into a dedicated gluten-free millroom & a millroom that processes gluten products), history of grain milling, and various types of whole grain products (oat = old-fashioned oat meal & groat = cereal made from whole, hull-less oats). You will also get to see the original millstones (back in the day when Bob's Red Mill was called Moore's Flour Mill) from decades ago. The mill recently got a surprise audit and inspector told them that this is one of the cleanest milling companies in the entire west coast. Sometimes the founder (Bob Moore) will come and say hello to guests. At the end of the tour, everyone got a free coupon ($1 off on any single Bob's Red Mill Product) and a free bag of sample. The tour lasted about 75 minutes. This was a very informative tour and I really respect how Bob transferred his ownership of the company to his employees in 2010 (now an employee-owned company). If you are planning to visit the whole grain store during weekdays, then come to the packing facility and check out the tour! read more

Fabulous store with quality grains and spices. The staff here is amazing! The selection of delicious pies are amazing!

Imagine, it's a warm sunny day, and you want to sit outside surrounded by trees, grass, other nice plants, and a fountain. You want to sit in a big comfortable chair with a back you can lean on, and you want to have a big umbrella over your table. You want to order vegan pancakes (with vegan chocolate chips inside) and a tasty vegetable sandwich, and you want to order these things without being questioned or looked at funny. You want to hang out on the patio for an hour and play scrabble with your buddy. You can do all of these things at the Bob's Red Mill Restaurant! And it has an added perk that you can stock up on bulk grains while you are there! The restaurant has different hours from the store so if you are hoping to make the above-mentioned fantasy your reality, make sure to double check before you go. read more

I give the store a -5 and the restaurant a -3 ... so 4 is the total score. The store is great, you can find all of Bob's grains that you can't find in the grocery store. Especially for those that need gluten free stuff. I love their soup mixes and lentils. The bulk bins are nice too. For the restaurant, I expected more flavor. I'm sure the breakfast is good (it smelled good and it's hard to mess up breakfast). I had the veggie sandwich. It was good, but really bland. I expected more from a natural full grain store with all the vegan and gluten free cookbooks. The sandwich was just that.... warmed up vegetables with some cheese on whole grain bread with a side of tasteless seedy chips. Maybe spice up the vegetables by adding some spices or herbs or maybe some roasted vegetables in stead of just sauteed? What about small cup of homemade pico-de-gallo or guacamole as an add on option for the chips. They're both gluten free and can come from fresh all natural ingredients. read more

Customer service is a joke. It says they will refund your money if you are unsatisfied for any reason. Granted I did order the wrong flower. I got gluten free by mistake and a LOT of it. It bakes out like a dry cow turd. I can't even eat it. I have thrown out so many shitty loaves of bread it not even funny. I sent an email expressing my distain for this product as their thank you for your purchase email instructed. Some days later I get this flipping email with recipes to try. Flat out done with this company and will never buy anything from them again. It's obviously just another corporation that cares more about their profit than your satisfaction. Just another conglomerate that said one thing and does another. I'm done. Don't make the same mistake that I did. Definitely CAN NOT BUY WITH CONFIDENCE!!!! They will just make excuses and avoid the refund with misdirect tactics. read more

Not only is Bob from Bob's Red Mill real, but he was just hanging around here before the start of the Mill's official tour, looking exactly like he does on their logo. You won't always meet him here -- he's usually too busy with meetings, or travelling for the business -- but apparently it's not a rare occurrence. The tour of Bob's Red Mill might be an unusual tourist activity, but you should consider it, especially if you have a car (it's a short drive, ~8 miles, from downtown Portland.) They don't take you through the mill floor itself, among the mills and packaging machines, but you do get a fairly close-up look at the operations. You also get a look at some historical mill stones--I believe we saw the original stone Bob used, which he purchased from an abandoned mill and which was first used in the 19th century) and you hear history of the business, which is an interesting story. Bob wasn't a miller's son or inherently drawn to milling. He read parts of a book on milling by chance one day, then some time later happened upon a mill for sale, and before you know it: Bob's Red Mill. (The actual story is longer, of course, more interesting, and involves his wife, who is also his business partner, and a few disasters.) You get a lot of marketing throughout but it's mostly interesting, and then at the end you get a couple of samples. The tour is free and lasts about 45 min to an hour. I'd have loved to get a look at their supply rooms, and to have been able to walk through more of the mill and seen the packaging and milling up close. (By comparison, Celestial Seasoning's tour out in Boulder takes you literally into their Mint Room, and so close to the machines that you need to put on a hair net and be cautioned not to touch anything.) But even as is, and even if you don't particularly know about or care about the brand itself, the tour is memorable and worth the visit. read more

Pros: We took a tour of Bob's Red Mill manufacturing plant today. It's the place where they actually grind, mix, package, ship, sell, and test their products. The tours are held at their World Headquarters, about a mile away from their Big Red Barn Visitor's Center, Monday -- Friday, at 10am sharp. We had a wonderful "Grain Guide who enthusiastically shared the history of the company after presenting a 14 minute video narrated by Bob. Our guide couldn't seem to keep the pride out of her voice, about how great the company is; from how Bob and Charlee started the business because of their love of Whole Foods and Mechanical things, to how the employees were given the company a few years ago on Bob's 81st Birthday. I learned a fair amount which gave me a new appreciation of grain, and of the product they are manufacturing, the quality and respect that goes into what they turn out. It is extremely clean, and staff are really friendly. We loved seeing some of the employees riding around on adult "tricycles." Cons: The only drawback was that the tour seems to be popular with parents who have small children, and I mean really small children, 1 - 5 years of age. Which is unfortunate because although our guide handled it well, these kids are not interested and would much rather be doing something else, this detracts from the overall experience. I believe that there should be a minimum age restriction of 6 years old. I would have liked to ask a few questions but it seemed pointless since it would have made the kids more antsy. I would go back if I could go on an adults only tour. read more

We took a large group of 14 family members for the tour today and it was wonderful! So interesting and fun to see the mill workers. Apprently it doesn't happen very often, but Bob came out and talked with us and had a nice conversation with my dad, 90-year-old WW2 veteran. Such a nice, inspirational man. Our tour guide Cheryl was outstanding and funny and we thoroughly enjoyed her! I'm so glad we planned for this tour today, plus we had lunch at the restaurant and you can't go wrong there! read more

I can't say enough nice things about Bob Red Mill flours. I've been getting into gluten free baking, therefore, my primary brand for flours and somewhat reasonable prices (if you shop across the border) is this. They have a whole library of flours including corn, black bean and millet flours which are hard to find in reasonable quantities. They also have some gluten free cake mixes as well. Everything that was made from my personally published recipe books in 2012 - 2014 were made using Bob Red Mills gluten free flours. It doesn't surprise me at all that these guys would be located in OR where most alternative food lifestyles on the West Coast is encouraged. Of course they sell regular flours and baking mixes as well. I've been to eateries both here and Portland that serve Bob Red Mills brand. read more

Their products are great, but customer service is lacking. I'm interested in purchasing numerous (50+) bags of bulk product and unfortunately their website's "find a store" option doesn't allow the option to search for bulk. Not having the time to spend calling stores all day I emailed customer service for a possible local source of bulk 25# bags... after emailing the company no less the 8 times with no response, I've given up. read more
