It's great to have a fitness option on the island where you can take group cycling and boot camp…read moreclasses. The group cycling class room is small and only has a few bikes, so sign up early to ensure you reserve a spot! They use Lemond bikes, which don't come with clip less pedals, but they added them on, which is great, although they should note this on their website so that people can bring cycling shoes with SPD pedals. The bikes are all well maintained and in good condition. There are a variety of instructors who all work other jobs so the instruction and music will vary depending on who teaches the class. The group circuit class with Rob is AWESOME!! He works you hard and keeps the class fun and motivating. The $18/group class fee seems reasonable. Check your bill closely to ensure there aren't any unauthorized charges as I think they could use a bookkeeper to better manage their accounts. I'd highly recommend Banyan Tree for group classes while you're on Boca Grande!

The owner and all the instructors are welcoming and very knowledgeable about physical fitness and health. They have a great variety of group classes: reformer, tower, barre, pilates mat, spinning and yoga. The private instruction is the most popular there as it is hard to get a slot during the high season. I strongly recommend calling ahead for private sessions and booking ahead on their mind body site for the group classes. There were waitlists during the winter for many of the classes. Overall beautiful studio, great staff and fun classes.

For the past 2 years, I have been using the services at The James Griffith Salon on Boca Grande…read more The general feeling in the spa is very unfriendly. I am a happy, chatty person, and there is no one in that whole building that shares my zest for life. From the ladies who run the spa area and are stationed out in the shop, to the women who work the desk for the salon, they are just NOT friendly. I got my hair done today there, not only is it pricy, which I understand, but may stylist seemed to be snooty with me. They all wander around with a frown on their faces. I have also gotten pedicures and manicures there. The one gal that I've gone to acts as if I'm putting her out. I love to chat, and they are straight faced and quiet. No joking around with this girl! I accidentally nicked my toe nail and went back to have it fixed and they charged me $10! At home, a touch up is free. AND after my pedicure, I had to file down my heels, as they were so rough still. Just an overall disappointment. Guess I'll be going off the island, which was recommended to me from some of my peers who also own on BG.

I booked an appointment with a stylist who shall remain unnamed on Friday night for my wedding hair…read moretrial and on Saturday for my big day. I asked her on Friday to please change up the do once we came to a decision about what it was going to be, since I was spending that evening with all the guests and didn't want them to see the final result. She looked at me like I had two heads then said, "I will have to charge you double." This was strange to me since this was a trial and we were supposed to feel each other out to see what she could do for something as important as my wedding hair style. But I thought, okay at least I will get two hair styles out of it. Her first try was a complete flop. My hair was so tightly curled that I put Curley Sue to shame. I wanted to cry and the stylist became more frazzled. I tried to figure out what she was planning to do differently the following day, since it looked so bad. So I said, okay forget about that style idea, can you please try an up do with a loose braid in the front. At this point the salon was closing and emptying out. It was just us, and I was starting to feel both bad and anxious at the same time. When she completed the undo, I looked like I was heading to the prom circa 1990. I realized that this woman couldn't do any of the styles that I brought in, so I told that I should leave and that she should stop trying. She said she didn't want me to leave upset but then let me go. When I walked up to the front desk with tears in my eyes, I was told that in fact I did owe double, for hair that I couldn't even wear that night. The girl at the front desk was even surprised that it was so much and went to confirm with the stylist. I told them that I wanted to cancel my appointment for the next day because I was really unhappy with her work. At which point they tried to talk me into using another stylist as the salon. I am never one to complain, but If you see that you are making a customer more and more unhappy, charging them double at the end of a very unsuccessful appointment is bad customer service and very bad for repeat business. I come to Boca Grande at least once a month for extended periods of time and I will never use their hair services again. If you are wondering, I came home and redid my own hair, after spending $165 at James Griffith Salon.
