Was here for the Penn & Teller 50th Anniversary tour and loved this smaller sister theatre to the Wang. All of the ushers and ticket scanners were super friendly and helpful, and the lobby is pretty, with white walls and a beautiful staircase leading up to the mezzanine. I was first seated in Row K of the Left Mezzanine, and the view was very good. The slope of the seats was great enough that I didn't have any heads in the way of my view of the stage. They also had a large screen so I could get a bigger picture of the stage. My husband and daughter were seated in Row G of the left orchestra, and I was able to join them as there ended up being an empty seat. The view from the orchestra was great, and again, I did not have any heads blocking my view. Sound was also perfect from both the orchestra and the mezzanine. The women's restrooms were large and were downstairs from the orchestra seating. I did not have to wait in line - there seemed to be enough stalls to accommodate the sold out show. the men's room is on the orchestra level, and I think there are additional restrooms on the mezzanine level, and accessible restrooms on the orchestra level. Parking is available at a couple of nearby garages, and The Shubert Theatre staff will validate your parking ticket so you will get a discounted rate. Be sure to check the theatre's website for the specific parking garages. We had a very pleasant evening here at the Shubert and I would love to come back. read more

This is a tiny historic theater, 1,600 seats I think. I was seated center floor, row N for the Ryan Adams show. Adams was great but the venue is not ideal for a quiet acoustic show. The biggest issue with this theater is the seats, they're small, close together and squeaky. When watch a show that is only acoustic guitar or piano, it became very annoying that the seats would squeak any time someone stood up to leave. It became a joke during the show because it sounds like "someone is playing clarinet" and at time "the clarinetist was just punched in the balls". Also, any time someone in the aisle needed to leave, everyone must stand up to let them out, thus more squeaking. Also, bathrooms are downstairs and stairs were steep. If you're disabled this would be a problem. The good here is that the acoustics were solid, entry was easy and staff friendly. read more

Finally got to visit a few more places in Boston. I saw the Urban Nutcracker while visiting. Parking was super easy, validate your tix for a flat 5hrs for $10. This reminded of my time in Europe, parking was set up the same. This was truly a nice experience, the theater was kinda of old, but served the purpose, seats very narrow. Theater was clean and staff helpful with seating and bathrooms. The wait time to enter the show was easy and prompt. Traffic was not bad at all for December. The Urban Nutcracker was wonder, I will be sure to plan another musical in Boson, check website for deets. I truly enjoyed my time in Boston!! read more

When you pick up tickets from will call, they will ask for a photo ID. I picked up my tickets way early, so I left briefly and came back shortly before 7:30 PM. The security style is Disneyland park style. You take off your bag, place it on the desk, and then walk through the full body scanner. Security here is tight. I have to say, this is the first time that I have set off a body scanner alarm because I had my cell phone in my pocket. I was finishing an outside beverage in hand and literally had 5 sips left in the bottle. The ushers were probably paid really well here because they did their job well and made sure I dare not to bring my drink inside the theater. I finished my sips standing by the lobby concession stand, and the ushers made sure I discarded my outside drink. That was my second first, never been watched so closely entering a theater. The theater is beautiful on the inside. It is true that there is pretty much no leg room. I didn't fully understand the setup at the orchestra. There were seats (starting with Row A) but also removable chairs (before Row A) up front during my show. I think this might be a temporary set up just for this show? The bathroom is downstairs. They have many stalls but don't smell good. They have dispensable soap and paper towels. Cold water only, no warm water from the faucet. Overall, enjoyed the show here. Across the street from the impressive Wang Theater sits the more modest Shubert Theatre. The box office opened 2 hours prior to show time, so I stopped by earlier to pick up my tickets by showing them my ID. We were at the Shubert for The Magic of Adam Trent of The Illusionists fame. Even from our seats up on the Mezzanine level, our view was quite good, although the screen illusions were more angled for those seated in Orchestra. The ladies room on the Mezzanine level had 4 stalls, and advertised an app which allowed ordering drinks in advance. A cool treat for this show was that Adam Trent made himself available in the lobby after the show to meet his fans and to pose for photo ops! *** 9/2018 *** We may have been off to the side in our Orchestra Left seats, but we were still up pretty close with a nice view. Sure, it started late 20 minutes with zero explanation, but the five illusionists of Champions of Magic put on a great show! The players: Sam Strange and Richard Young make up the team Young & Strange Alex McAleer - mind reader Kayla Drescher - Close-Up Magician Fernando Velasco - Visual Magic Expert and Escape Artist The photo op afterwards with the performers was a nice touch. I attended the Joe Jackson concert on the 19th. I like the interior of the theater but not a fan of the restroom being in the basement; the ceiling for the stairs was very narrow and I was afraid of smacking my head. The concessions were a little pricy but I suppose it would be the same at the movies. The acoustics were very good and the show was VERY entertaining. The ticket prices were decently priced for how close we were. I'd go to this venue again! read more

We attended Rent on 10/12 at the Shubert Theatre. As regular theater goers, we frequent both Boston and Providence, I try to get excellent seats for each performance. I was totally appalled when the 4 members of my party were seated in P1ORCH RIGHT seats. There was a speaker stand - floor to ceiling and 4 feet wide directly in front of my party. This blocked 1/4 of the performance. (Others around us had the same blocked view.)We paid $98 plus fees per seat to look at speakers! I have tried calling but only get a number to buy tickets. I emailed an address that said "for a quicker response use this email address." No response. I would love to know why these seats are sold at full price when you will miss a great portion of the performance. There is no "obstructed view warning" when buying the tickets. The show (from what I could see of it) was great. The music terrific! read more

I love thee Shubert Theater because it's so intimate. There isn't a bad seat in the house. The seats are also relatively comfortable and the Victorian styled theater is a vision in itself. A bit of Boston history, they filmed a TV pilot for ABC, a period piece called "Gilded Lillies," in this theater. Most recently, I attended the HBO documentary film premiere of "Marathon: the Patriots Day bombing" here with my "Boylston Street Family" of survivors. The only thing I found Difficult about the theater was the uneven flooring to get to and from your seats. It isn't a single, smooth elevation. It goes up multiple times, at sharp angles. So, be warned... Especially if you had a couple of glasses of wine before the show, haha. THE DEAL: Stop for a drink across the street before the show. There is no alcohol served in the theater. read more

If you focus on just the Theatre itself, Shubert is a great place for a show. It's got that grand old style, great acoustics, and comfortable seats. So sit back and enjoy whatever performance you came to see. The discomfort comes with some of the related items. You can purchase beverages at their concession stands, and you can bring those drinks back to your seats. But you are paying concession prices, and getting around the folks in line is awkward. Good luck getting your tickets online. For the show we attended, the ticket-purchasing window from their website crashed 3 times while attempting to actually purchase the tickets. We were finally given a phone number to call. Since it is an older theater, it's not the easiest to get around if you have mobility issues. And then there's those rest rooms, accessible only by batcave style stairs going down to a ground level. The men's room can only handle 6 at a time. At show's intermission, the line of men waiting to use the facilities stretched up the stairs, through the hallway and back to the aforementioned concession stand. Do yourself a favor and take care of that sort of thing before the show starts. But otherwise, enjoy the show... you endured the worst of it getting there. read more

We recently had the occasion to go the Shubert to see The Urban Nutcracker. It was wonderful! However, the lack of masks being worn was concerning. The whole row in front of us, obviously a family, were maskless from the time they sat down until they walked out the door. There were four people behind us that did not wear masks. Ushers walked by and didn't seem to notice or care. I am not the mask police and if a person does not want to wear one I believe they should not be forced to. I do take exception to those people that exercise their right to not wear a mask, blatantly putting my health on the line. If you don't want to wear one then don't go to indoor, close quarter venues. If the Shubert is looking to close down again, they are doing a great job at it. I read more

Came here for Rudolph which was wonderful! Didn't love the price of the tickets though! Orchestra seats half way to the front were serious coin. Although the seats in my row were pretty spacious, so there's that. since everyone was little there were no issues of the reported 'knees to the head'. The concession stand was pretty bad. I think there was only one in the first floor and it it was run by one person. Small offerings and they were out of a lot of stuff. I've come here for a few events and the line outside always moves fast, will call pick up is easy, and the seats are comfortable enough for an old building, but I've never felt so crowded and pushed around -- if we're not going to be able to go in to be sat, then they need to stop letting people in the door. This happened one of the two times, and could have just been communication from the stage/theater to the door (it started late). read more

For the record, this rating is not reflective of any of the musical productions. I'm not sure how old this theatre is and how much I should let slide because of it, but overall my experience here was not very pleasant. I picked up my ticket at will call and followed the flow of traffic to the doors before I was told that I needed to backtrack to an earlier entrance for the balcony seating. Not a huge deal but it would have been nice to know ahead of time so I wouldn't have to swim backwards through the crowd. The balcony seating is very, very narrow. I'm 5'3" and I felt like my knees were right up against the heads of people in the row in front. The poor tall guy next to me had to sit awkwardly with his legs splayed open so he wouldn't accidentally knee someone in the head. I guess space in general is just tight. The upstairs bar was right next to the usher giving directions so the bar patrons and line of people to get to their seats was a mess. The women's bathroom was tiny and needed the line to go out the door as well. Then the usher directing people to their seats decided to stand right in front of one of the balcony entrances making it impossible for people to get through to their seats. During the show, to deter people from using their phones, ushers would walk down and start shining a bright flash light on and off at the person until he/she noticed, simultaneously annoying the crap out of the rest of us who weren't on our phones. Not sure if the person on the phone is to blame or the way the ushers were trained to handle the situation. First time to the Shubert theater. Remembering hearing a lot about the place but I do enjoy it's antique type appearance. As with many theaters of this style, the seating could really use some upgrades but that being said being a short person, I had no trouble seeing over the person in front of me. Came here to see Hedwig and the Angry Inch the last week and it was phenomenal! It was a great theater to have it in and the acoustics were beautiful. While I might have enjoyed sitting in the front row seats, the balcony provided a perfect view of everything that I needed to see to enjoy the show. I will say that the climb of stairs to the balcony was less than ideal but the tickets were relatively inexpensive so not a huge issue. Not a ton of parking around. I might suggest parking in Chinatown and then walking over. It's just a couple blocks away! read more

With The Wang Theatre over shadowing the "Little Princess" the Shubert Theatre turned 90 Years old this year. The Shubert is an old majestic theatre with a lot of history and stories. I saw Cats here, years ago. I always try to get front row seats in the mezzanine, so seats are always right. read more

PLEASE PLEASE READ THE REVIEWS HERE BEFORE GOING! As I should have and did not. I love the look of this theater however, that is where the love ends. As all the other reviews have stated: ZERO leg room. And I don't mean similar to an airplane or your parent teacher conference in elementary school seats; I mean none. I stand five feet one inch and had to tuck my feet under my seat and if, two hours in, I wanted to lean back, I leaned on the knees of the man behind me. My six foot BF had to leave halfway into the performance, after sitting sideways the entire time, only to be told he could not stand by the bar as he was "loitering". I'm pretty sure loitering takes place in public and at $80 a ticket, public this was not. We won't be returning. read more

Allow me to leap right in here by breaking into that rare, annoying capslock rant, so that it will catch the casual viewer's eye: THE MEZZANINE SEATING IS TOO TIGHT FOR ANYONE OVER 5'4". For someone 6'1", we're talking tighter than US Air seating. We're talking seating that makes left field at Fenway seem capacious. We're talking so tight I basically couldn't sit without maneuvering my legs sidesaddle into my wife's legs. It's ridiculous...a day later my knees still hurt. And while I don't expect they can actually adjust the venue, they could put a warning on the ticket site that you're about to spend $85 on a seat that would be tight for an average 14-year-old. No wonder 90% of the audience in the mezzanine was noticeably short; anyone tall who's been there once has learned an important lesson. When I was in the lobby during the break (as I hobbled down two floors to that one overcrowded men's restroom) I towered over half the people like Gulliver in Lilliputia. "Hello down there! Are anyone else's knees hurting!?" Anyway,consider yourself warned: if you're even vaguely tall, either pony up some serious money for floor seats, or stay the heck away. read more

We went to Shubert Theatre to see The Addams Family Musical last week. Our seats were in the last row of the balcony. Terrible. We were very uncomfortable as the seating was tight, but I had expected this as I know this is an old theatre. I have a back injury (having 2 back surgeries), so I was practically in tears during the first part of the show. During intermission, my sister went down and asked if they would allow us to move down. They said absolutely, and had 5 chairs for us placed about 7 rows up from the stage. These chairs were not great either, but at least I had the room to stretch around a bit for the second part of the show. I was very grateful, and thought they were very accommodating. I would definitely go back and support them for another show. read more

I went to this theater last night for the first time. It's located about 2 blocks from the Boylston T-stop on Tremont Street. My boyfriend had purchased tickets for Madame Butterfly on the Wang Center website. We arrived at the Theater at about 7pm and had to wait a bit to be seated in the Balcony where our seats were located--and man were there a lot of stairs. Many of the older people in front of us had great difficulty getting up them so it took awhile to get to the top. When we were at the top, we had to wait awhile (on the stairs) to actually be seated. In the Balcony there was a restroom and a bar, which made me super happy considering we had just gone up all those stairs and I wasn't about to go back down to come back up. The Balcony has an extremely steep incline--and many of the older people had a lot of trouble getting down the stairs and up them. Also, like most old theaters of it's kind, there wasn't a lot of room between my legs and the person sitting in front of me. However, the view from the stage was pretty clear. We were extremely high up. Center Balcony ...5th row and I had a clear shot of the stage--when the show actually started, I had very good view of everything, a clear understanding of the set up of the stage, and felt comfortable with the view. So if you want the cheap Balcony seats--these were very good. However, I must warn you it was very warm upstairs and the air was a bit stale. The bathrooms got very crowded at intermission and so did the concession line--so be sure to account for that--especially if there are a number of older women at the show! Other than those minor things, I did have a pleasant theater experience. The Boston Lyric Stage made excellent use of their lighting, the size of the stage and the Orchestra pit was HUGE. I also enjoyed the huge chandelier and they had subtitles in English on two gigantic LCD TVs on the side of the stage if you wanted to know the Italian songs translation in English. Very cool. The downstairs area looked very comfortable and so did the box seats. I'm sure that if you want to pay a little more, you'll get all the comfort that comes along with the extra bucks. read more

We purchased tickets to see a great show this weekend. Up in the balcony the view was fine and the theater itself is gorgeous. However, we only lasted until intermission. The seating is so cramped in the balcony that both my husband and I (me 5'5", him 6", both average size) kept having to try to shift our legs/feet/hips in order to maintain blood circulation in our legs.The space around one's feet is small enough that, if you're carrying a purse, you really need to hold it on your lap. My husband said that he has been more comfortable sitting in the middle seat of the economy section of an airplane. More room to stretch out. We saw that the couple sitting in front of us were going through the same thing and, before we left, we mentioned that we weren't coming back for the second half, so they could take our seats and extend their legs over the backs of their original seats. They were ECSTATIC. Really wish we were comfortable enough to enjoy the show. We'll remember this situation next time we look at tickets for this theater. I wonder if the Mezz/Orch seats are better? I hope so. I understand that this is an old theater, but a renovation would make a huge difference here. We would happily pay more money per ticket in exchange for being able to watch an entire show without being distracted by pain. read more

I'm just gonna throw this out there: Shubert Theatre has the most hardcore ushers I've ever encountered. And I've encountered some ushers, ifyaknowwhatI'msayin. Otherwise, the three tiered seating is easy to access, and the streamlined entry puts ticket windows to the left, allowing for the opposite of mass exodus (mass entranta?) undoubtedly experienced by those arriving only moments before the performance. Thanks, traffic/snow/lack of parking. Actually, the latter isn't the best reason, as Shubert is smack dab in the middle of 4-5 garages and that dastardly Fitz Inn lot next door. Last resort, I'm telling you. Expect shows with a mid-level production quality, and series that skew to be more family friendly. Shubert hosts what I'd call a musical black box - neither the stark corner stage with 40 folding chairs and a platform to work with (I'm still Waiting For Godot), nor the large and complex staging of its across the street bretheren at the Citi Performing Arts Center, you'll still get the razzle-dazzle of an off-Broadway production and at a reasonable ticket price. Snacks in the lobby. Beer and wine, if you wish. Sounds quality is surprisingly strong. Seating is tight, but cushioned, and there are only a handful of extreme stage right or stage left moments where the speaker stack may block the action. Otherwise, not a bad seat in the house. The only thing that prevents the fourth star is a lack of anything truly memorable about the space. Of course, I hit the theatre for the show, and for that, Shubert fits the bill. read more

Wow, who knew a musical about The Four Seasons could be so great? Like my friend said, the Shubert was a GREAT place to see Jersey Boys last night. It's a great little theater with great views of the stage. Comfy chairs, too, for sitting for a couple hours. Oh, and for certain shows, they let you take your intermission drinks back in. So don't quaff yours down, buddy! The downside is, as mentioned by others, the bathroom. It's like in the basement and you have to practically tackle ladies out of your way to get there and back before they start flashing those lights. Lucky for me, I'm agile. I have been to the Shubert Theatre a few times now and really like the "cozy" feel to it. By this, I mean that the way it is built allows for the small theatre feeling even though it can accommodate quite a few people. I have always sat in the Orchestra section, but have explore the other seats and have found there really is not a "bad" seat in the house. I like the intermission concession area, a little more laid back than other theatres in that they serve the usual drinks and soda's but also have some tasty snacks too! I was surprised we could have there items at our seats too. The seats are comfortable. Ushers were friendly and helpful. Locking forward to my next show at the Shubert!! read more

Watched a comedy show here in June and had 4th row pit seats. Great views and tons of leg room, so if that is an issue choose pit seats. Beautiful building. Friendly staff (except the photo nazis) but overall helpful. Drinks pricey as expected but good. Bathrooms clean. A unique, clean, and comfortable theater. Truly had a great time. Went to see John Prine at the Shubert and I have to say it's the worst theater in Boston. Sat in the balcony and the rows are so tight anyone of moderate height will have less space than in economy on modern airplanes. I'm 5'6" and I was squished. The gentleman's knees behind us kept hitting my wife's head. Also, don't expect to get a bottle of water during the show. I went to the concessions about half way through the show and was told quite rudely "the bar is closed". When I stated that I was not drinking beer and merely wanted a bottle of water I was told "we have no water". I pointed out the bottles of Polar seltzer in the fridge behind them. The two concession agents then told me it was the artist's request to shut down concessions. I don't believe that for a minute. Maybe John Prine asked them to stop serving beer? That makes sense. I hadn't had ONE drink that evening and merely wanted to drink some water. If your favorite artist comes to town and you have to go to a show here beware. My advice is skip this venue and drive outside the city to see whoever you're interested in. There are plenty of other great venues in New England. read more

Was there this past Saturday to see Stomp. While the show was amazing, the theater was extremely hot! It was so hot my family and I were sweating. I had to walk out and go downstairs for air. I told an usher that it was way too hot inside and something had to be done. Nothing was and it was unbearable! It completely took away from our experience. read more

Very nice theater overall. The inside of the theater was nice. There were some downfalls though. Getting into the theater was crazy. Way too many people trying to get in and there were employees yelling at everyone telling everyone where to get in line to get in. The seats are kinda cramped to. I've been here twice and both times, there was nothing going on. One of my courses took me here to analyze the acoustics. I can tell you from a scientific perspective that any seat in this theater is a good seat. So, in my book, that's a four star reason to see an opera etc. here. read more

We came here to see The Color Purple Broadway production last night. Its such a beautiful theater, I love all the historic buildings of Boston. We always choose seats in the mezzanine so we can sit up high and get a full view of the stage but also get to enjoy a close view of the beautiful old lights and architecture of the building. The seating is a tight squeeze and it gets pretty warm in there so be ready to remove some layers so you don't get drowsy during the show! read more

This is the little sister theater of the Wang Center. I just saw Rent there and that maybe why I am giving it 4 stars. The theater has a mezzanine and balcony. The seats in the front of the mezzanine were the best (no need to crank your neck up to look at the stage like on the main floor) and the balcony looked a little too high up. The seats are tiny and you wil suffer if your height surpases 5 feet by much. They do servce alcohol on every floor but I recommend abstaining from the $7 sips of grape juice they passed for wine. read more

Came here to see Rent. The theatre itself isn't too bad aside from very cramped balcony seats like you find in most non-renovated old theatres. However, the worst part of the experience is dealing with the front-of-house staff. Entrance was chaotic, and the directions that the house managers bark at you on the sidewalk are inconsistent with the actions of staff inside, making for a clumsy and crowded entry. Perhaps other venues can pull off the 15-minute seating, but it's not pretty here. If given the choice, I'd much rather see a show at the Opera House. read more
