It was great if you needed a quick pick me up, but it looked like when you got inside the store they were almost going out of business has a lot of the shelving and the prepared food items were all empty or shut down the deli was open and the things purchased there as far as sandwich lunch meat and cheese were very good. The chicken salad was also great if you wanted soup you had to ask and they had to warm it up so not conducive to what they had or easily obtained. The bread and roll items were limited as were several other variations of products. I am so impressed with Bockwinkel's. Not only is the food high quality but it's the people. My son's iPhone slipped out of his pocket and was sitting on the sidewalk outside the store. A friendly woman named Dorothy (maybe the owner?) found and secured it. When we called looking for it she answered only to let us know she would ship it back to him in NY. There's pros and cons to this store. It is clean, it is convenient. They do carry items other stores don't. I do enjoy of a few of the employees here that are friendly. Dear the manager of Bockwinkels, I hope you are doing great, at least I hope you're doing better than I am after having this terrible experience at Bockwinkle's at Ohio street in StreeterVille Chicago. One of the employees at the salad counter was extremely rude.I do not know her name. She is a lady at around about 5'3'', and we met her at the salad counter around 9:30 PM, 3/18/2025. When we asked her to get some salad for us, she immediately started complaining and even cursing. I didn't say anything except "thank you for helping," yet she responded with about ten F-words in less than a minute. I have no idea what triggered her, but she clearly needs some serious counseling. To make matters worse, she tried to use a salad box that had dropped on the floor, mislabeled the price, and continued adding salad even after I had clearly said "enough." Since the salad is charged by weight, this felt like an intentional attempt to force me into buying more, as if I had done something to deserve punishment. I have been to Bockwinkles many times, and every other employee I've encountered has been friendly and professional. I couldn't believe I had to deal with this incredibly unprofessional and rude staff. This was, without a doubt, the worst shopping experience I've ever had. If she didn't want to serve me, she could have just said so instead of behaving this way. This employee at the salad counter is seriously damaging Bockwinkles' reputation. Such a convenient grocery store downtown. I was impressed with the selection of items this store has. I always thought in a metropolitan city, where you are surrounded by hotels and skyscrapers. That if there was a grocery store around. It would be more inline with a corner store. You go there just to get a few odds and ends, and you pray they have what you want. Nice full size grocery store located next to the DoubleTree on Ohio street. I stopped in the morning a few times to pick up fresh fruit and beverages for the day at work. They have a large liquor section and plenty of snacks throughout the store. They charge for the bags in Chicago but I guess that helps the environment. They are open late as well if you find yourself in need of anything. read more

I started shopping here as a convenience during Covid and because is it closest to my residence. I would give one star but there are a few very nice checkout ladies during the week who really try hard to help you. Prices on fruits, vegs, etc. etc. are ridiculously high and not fresh. The biggest problem here is Mr. Bockwinkel the owner. He screamed and yelled at me when I requested a delivery. I did this in time frame required. He went ballistic saying, "I don't have anyone; I am short staffed; I don't give a eff how much you bought or if you are a good customer, etc etc etc. I literally started begging him because I had no feasible way to my groceries home. I started crying. He finally gave in and got someone to help me. He's does not care at all how he talks to customers. I now only buy what I can take home in a cart. I do like the fact that they chose my picture for their add. Great location and they do have just about everything on shelf. Plus they have a bakery and a food bar. Fresh bread and bagels always my with pastries. Plus they sell cake by the slide or as whole. The only problem I have is that their produce and fr sh herbs are always on the old side. I think they can do a whole lot better with fresher selection. I e joy buying wasabi peas, sunflower seeds and peanuts, they are cheaper than wholefoods. Store is never busy. We have ran in here a few times just to pick up things we forgot on our regular grocery shopping trip. It's always quiet and just 2-3 customers each time we have been in. I do have to compliment them on the restrooms, they are very modern and I do love the glass modern mirrors with LED lighting around it. What I do not like about the store is that the produce is not at its best. I've bought Basil from here and it was always moldy and in tuff tuff shape. Also the lemons were in bad shape. We never buy produce from here after that experience. Other than an emergency run we don't like the lay out of this store. The staff is very welcoming, but I just don't see us shopping here on a regular base. read more

Good, simple lunch option with a deli and soup option. Organization was a bit off for a first/only time visitor, but, ultimately not a bad choice for a simple sandwich and soup. Bockwinkel's - Moldy tomatoes - Grocery Near Me - Chicago, Illinois

Took a tour of the new Bockwinkel's today on Ohio Street here in Streeterville - much like its proximity to our apartment, the prices fall about halfway between Whole Foods and Jewel-Osco. Some of the fresh vegetables and packaged hamburgers/chicken parts are certainly prettier and less expensive than Whole Foods, but I stumbled into a few items - boxed pastas, frozen pizzas, some favorite condiments and ethnic fare - that were inexplicably more expensive. (My favorite Tuesday night, go-to frozen pizza, Gino's East, was a full $3 more than I can find it on most places. And a one pound box of DeCecco Fusilli pasta was a full 30 cent more than "The Jewel"). Unlike Whole Foods, their $6.39 salad bar is all veggies, with just a smattering of proteins, including large chunk tuna, boiled eggs, "krab" and sliced (dry!) chicken breasts. There's also a soup bar of about a half dozen different simmering offerings, but you have to flag someone down from the deli to portion out your cups, bowls or quarts. The deli has a HUGE offering of sliced meats and cheeses, including most Boar's Head products, as well as pre-made salads and pastas. The much talked about Juicy Italian Beef sandwich ($4.39) will only be available on Mondays - and Friday's famous "Domesticated Tacos" are also a hit at only $1.99. Unfortunately, the deli worker couldn't tell me what makes the tacos "domesticated"...I assume they're simply well trained. Overall, the place is crazy clean, the staffers were very friendly and the layout was comfortable and very bright. The selection was certainly better than Treasure Island, mostly cheaper than Whole Foods and logistically closer than Jewel-Osco...here's to a long future in Streeterville. read more

Convenient grocery market that I only pop into if I need something last minute and don't feel like walking over to Whole Foods. Clean store with a lot of the basics. Not sure how they stay in business though because the prices on many things, especially produce are absurd. Because the prices are so high, I think it keep's customers away, so bins of produce are over ripe and moldy. Maybe if they didn't charge $4 for an avocado, they would actually sell them. Never see more than 3-4 other people shopping. Staff is not the friendliest. Overall, Whole Foods has better prices, quality, and selection. read more

Cat Food/Supplies Area- It appears that selections are limited and maybe not up to par with "people that own animals"-no Fancy Feast Broth Options?? Most people have started to venture away from the "canned" meals of cat food! Wine Selection: There appears to be a nice variety of Champagne (French) and also Malbec Red including White (Torrontes) from Los Alamos-a well known "authentic" Argentinean wine which is hard to find. However, it seems WAY overpriced. People that sell Argentinean and Chilean Wine above $10.00-and say it is 2017, 2018=rip off. If you have spent anytime in these countries-their wine is different than Europe. Furthermore- Odd set-up for the entry and exit. I went to Bockwinkels thinking it would be similar price to Whole Foods but with every day brands and more "junk food" with similar convenience. Unfortunately, this is the closest store to my apartment. They had a terrible produce selection, most things were nearing over-ripe or were prepacked and terribly overpriced. Every item on the shelf was at least 4/5$ regardless of what it was. Which was absolutely insane. 7$ for a gallon of milk. Prices you'd expect from a corner express store inside a condo, but in a supermarket atmosphere. I was willing to pay the prices for the convenience and had already committed to shopping but continued finding myself settling on brands and overpaying at the same time. The FINAL straw, I came home to find many dry goods I purchased were nearly out of date. Orville Redenbacher popcorn expired 2 weeks after purchase and is basically unpoppable. I will never shop here again. Rotten produce. Dusty and out of date products. Incredibly overpriced. Barely friendly staff. read more

This is the closest market to where I live, and I must say Bockwinkel's is a nice, homey market for your daily needs. The prices may not be cheap, but keep in mind you're in downtown Chicago. I particularly liked how clean the whole place was. The employees are friendly and helpful. In other words, there is really not much to complain about here. The owner is racist and encourages his staff to RACIALLY PROFILE Hispanic/Latino and African American customers who enter the store. He also encourages his staff to "take action against shoplifting", by providing mace to his employees. He speaks to his employees like they are worthless human beings, telling one employee, "you sound like a mouse and should work at a computer job where you don't have to talk or interact with people". His lead cashier is extremely rude and told one customer that she wasn't going to help them empty their cart because they are "young" and she doesn't have to help them. She also told another customer that the reason their card did not go through was because "they probably didn't have any real money." On top of that, I have witnessed products that are old, spoiled and rotting. There have been several times were I have seen open frozen products, leaking rotisserie chicken, and poorly packaged salad bar items. Items, in my opinion, are often over priced as well. Bockwinkels coffee and tea station is also very unsanitary and often covered in flies. The coffee and tea pot do not appear to be throughly cleaned daily as they often have a white film floating at the tops. This place, in my opinion, is disgusting. I would not recommend shopping here. Trader Joe's and Whole Foods are right down the street, so save some time and money, and chose those instead. They have much better quality items, as well as, I believe, greater benefits and mutual level of respect for both the customers and staff alike. The store has a convenient location near the apartment where am I at. Whenever we needed something quick, it is easy for me to get anything in here. Going in here for a few times, I noticed a lot of things and it is either good and bad. They have a nice selection of everything and the store is mostly clean and organized. The staff in here is also friendly and helpful. However, the downside in here is that prices are noticeably higher than of the prices in other grocery stores and sometimes there are few products are not really in a good condition. Overall, it is still a nice store and will still continue to shop in here for a few products. read more

I just witnessed a very disturbing situation at this store. As I approached the checkout counter the girl working the counter had taken a few steps away from her station. The older, gray haired, male manager said loudly to myself and another patron "We have a new employee who doesn't know she's not allowed to walk away." As she immediately returned, he intimidatingly said to her "Take care of our customers!" As she starting ringing me out, he walked up behind the young and seemingly shy girl, grabbed her by the shoulder so tightly I could see his fingers pressing into her, and "whispered" right in her ear - visibly reprimanding her. The whole thing was incredibly uncomfortable, felt very inappropriate, and downright abusive. That manager should certainly be spoke to, if not fired. read more

This review is mostly based off the issues I have with the produce section. The tomatoes are ALWAYS moldy, as is much of the other fruit. A lot off the other produce is often at the rotten stage and looks as if it's not rotated when stocked. I would love to make it my go to place as I live right across the street. However I'd rather walk the extra blocks and get my produce at Trader Joes. The plus side is that the staff is ALWAYS friendly. read more

Disappointed. Most of the grab and go food here is of cheap quality. Tried the beer cheese soup-tasted like drinking liquid spray cheese. The wings from the deli are inedible, salty and off-tasting. You have to shift around the salad bar greens to avoid wilted leaves. The store has an eerie atmosphere due to the quiet radio and lack of business. Sadly avoid shopping local and visit one of Whole Foods, Target, Treasure Isl. or Jewel in the area. It really disappoints me to say that as I firmly believe in shopping local, however judging by the 2 STAR rating on yelp and the other reviews then I feel justified. The service especially is ingrained in the staff from the ownership. 2 staff members I encountered were helping each other at the deli counter and asking for tasters. I waited there holding my baby for a good five minutes whilst DAN ineptly served. DENISHA the other employee then just told me "to wait". We had a verbal volley about how to treat customers and then DAN got my order wrong. On the way out the manager informed me to directly deal with the owners of the company for assistance. I just had an unreal experience that HAVE to share with the world (or at least with the 60611 people). Today I went to bockwinkels (Monday) because 2 days ago on (Friday) I bought a cheese from the deli department and today when I went to sprinkle it on my salad, I realized the cheese was rotten. I took the cheese back and the deli guy agreed that the cheese was bad but when I told him I didn't have the receipt he said the best he could do was given me another cheese. The cheese container had the price and the bockwinkle sticker. What ever, I told the guy that I didn't want cheese from there and that $8 (price of the cheese) were not going to break the bank. I said that if bockwinkles was willing to lose a customer for $8, I was okay with that. I walked out of the store and 5 steps later I hear someone calling out "excuse me, excuse me, did you pay for that?". I looked at him and he painted at my bottle of coconut water that I had walked in with 5 minutes before. At this point I was embarrassed and upset. I went back with him and requested he call the manager... well the manager never came. I have never been a fan of this place but since it's across the street from my building (Streeter), I go on occasions. NEVER AGAIN will I go there! I also told my husband he is not allowed to go . It was fine for me, but nothing great. A few things were odd... There was an entire empty display in the produce section. I can see how the staff could be perceived as apathetic or something but ... I've been told I'm too cheery too early, so.....I offered my normal morning (over?) friendly interaction.... And there was no rudeness but certainly a little hesitation from the employee I encountered to join the friendly conversation. The other odd thing turns out to be good. I found my 1.5 L of water was cheaper than the 1L option ... Maybe this is normal so no sweat for Bockwinkel's. I was hoping for a little more variety as I almost always see something new, local, different when I visit Chicago, and pretty much everything was very basic there. Fine. Not fancy.
