I'm here to speak about the deli in this location. The store gets pretty crowded at times and the never have more than 4 lanes open. They rather stand around and say self-checkout is open. People know about self-checkout, clearly guest will rather go through the regular check out. Those males they have over there in the deli have ruined the quality of the hot or cooked items over there. I've heard a customer request the $1 item and they said there wasn't any more they'd have to cook them, THEN turned and said they wouldn't have time. They stand back there moving so slow it's unbelievable. The one guy with the real thick glasses has a real nasty attitude. Every time a woman asks for something he's speaking under his breath about them. I hear because I stand a wait for another guy to come available because I never want to deal with him and he speaks negatively of the customers because they have request. Jewel Osco was the most recommended rotisserie chicken that I had in Chicago. I went in to pick up my beloved bird, but damn near broke my neck when I saw a 15+ person line over at the fried chicken station. A line for grocery store fried chicken? Absolute cinema. People have been recommending I get into fried chicken reviews, and I've resisted as I really don't want to get fat, but this was the perfect storm to start a grocery store fried chicken review journey. I got to the front in the line and felt like a fish out of water. I sheepishly asked the employees, Darius R and Damariea J, what the move was as it was my first time getting fried chicken from here. I thought they'd be annoyed, but they were so helpful and welcoming. "Today is actually wing bucket Friday! A whole bucket is normally $17.99 but today it's $9.99. I can give you some of everything so you can try, but the spicy wings are my favorite." Hell yeah. Darius was the MAN. I took my tissi and wing bucket to the UIC campus for consumption. The tissi was a brick and landed at a 6/10, which currently ranks it 71st out of 94 grocery store birds I've tried, but the fried chicken was INSANE. There are so many of these in Chicago and it is great to have because they're in every town of Chicago it seems. There's always ample parking that's free and there is a large variety of choices of foods as well as non-food items. The prices are a little bit higher, but it's convenient because they are everywhere. And they are really good sales sometimes where you can get mushrooms for one dollar, strawberries for one dollar, blueberries for one dollar, and even tofu for $1 which was just on 3/9/25. On the app, you can get a free item almost every weekend, but you just have to clip it as well as the digital coupons. Just make sure all the prices get scanned properly when you look at your receipt and they will adjust it right away if there is ever a technical error. Overall, having a Jewel Osco in Chicago makes life easier for me because of the sales as well as finding one everywhere. read more

This store is such a trip. I bring my own bag and almost every time the security guy watches me and thinks I'm stealing. The cashiers told us savings came off when they did not. Instead of fixing it while in line, the person rushed us out and told us to go to customer service. It was a $30 difference after the savings and it made us wonder how many times the savings have not gone through and we didn't notice. One desperate time I had to use the bathroom in the store. It was literally the scariest grocery store bathroom I've ever seen. Poop on walls. Floor was not cleaned. No toilet paper. I had got my flu shot at the pharmacy. The tech injected into a vein and blood squirted out and ran down my arm and when I complained to the pharmacist snd suggested she get more training, he said this was normal and when he gives flu shots there is even more bleeding. Today I had three digital coupons. Great deals. Jewel, however didn't honor this. The app didn't work. This is the second time this has happened. The app says- tech problems. I talked to the service child. At 6pm, on 5.30.24. She said delete the app. Reinstall. Log in. I said can't I just get the coupon? I had already reinstalled the app two minutes ago and was annoyed. I am The problem. Not the app. I ask for a manager and the child's response was "go to customer service. I'm not a manager." I said, I know that, but can you manage to get me a manager. I see the store has a 2 star review (deservingly so) but I'm reviewing the fried chicken. YES FRIED CHICKEN! I was in there on Oct.13th a Friday (and my BDay) to get a bucket of Honey Wings. While I'm in this long line what seems to be for chicken. Everyone was ordering their fried chicken. I ordered my wings and stepped to the side because they wasn't ready for another 3 mins. When I overheard a lady saying and I quote "This is some of the best fried chicken around" end quote! So I said to myself next time I'm getting some. Well Next time was yesterday (Monday) I got in another long line for chicken. This time the line was longer (because the chicken was on sale for $5.99 8pc.) I got the yard bird and got it home....... For me, this grocery store has the most items on my list at the best prices. I find myself shopping here a lot! They have a nice sized parking lot. A LOT of vegan items that are hard to find or typically very expensive. Large alcohol section, too. Checkouts can be very slow but what grocery store isn't right now? Service is nice. What started as a great experience turned to a nightmare. Placed an order online for friends that live in Chicago. I am over 500 miles away. The convenience of finding items in the online system, the sale prices and the ease of scheduling made Jewel-Osco the perfect choice to help fill a friend's pantry. Filled a cart with 51 items for around $110. Received a 20% discount and free delivery since it was my first order. Delivery was to be same day, between 5 and 7 pm. Sweet! At 9 pm, order still not received. Customer service said there was a driver shortage. Would reschedule for the next day. Received an email from corporate customer service at 1:30am that the order was being canceled. Called local customer service at 6:30 am when they opened. They confirmed the order was being sent out that morning, as soon as possible. Order finally arrived at 7:30pm. Instead of 51 items, they received 8. Another call to customer service. Turned out the driver only picked up the shelf-stable items. Did not get the frozen of refrigerated items. So no frozen dinners, yogurt, milk, fruit. Just water, soda and pasta. Friends are mad at me now. They missed an opportunity to possibly get food at a food pantry. Were stressed waiting for the order for 2 days. Mad at me because they thought I ordered pasta and water only. Another call to customer service. They found the missing items in the cooler and freezer. Would reschedule delivery for within the next 2 days. A refund of the missing items was requested instead. That was completed without a hassle. read more

This place is a comedy of errors, a real shit show that I suppose fills a niche of some kind. What, precisely, is that niche is anybody's guess. My colleague and I were at the University of Illinois Medical Center for a seminar and wanted to pick up some donuts for the simple carbohydrate starved endomorphs we'd be sure to encounter later that day. Upon arrival, my collegue and I ambulated to the proper aisle to find just the right selection and quickly made our way to the check out line. We were proud of ourselves. This location looked as if Hurricane Kanye had somehow made its way through its front door and we wanted the hell out of there as quickly as possible. Would it, could it, should it actually be? Having been here several times before, a manifest cockroach in the ointment would always arise. Maybe this was it, our "eureka moment" such that we'd be in and out as fast as it takes to put the radio out of its misery using the Glock that Uncle Oleg bequeathed when a L'il Pimp song comes on. No such luck. None at all. Upon finding the least objectionable check out aisle (in this instance, the one where the marginal propensity for the corpulent cashier operator to have an acute MI was less than a coefficient of .87, we noted disorder of some kind going on. Specifically, the cashier was arguing with a very beautiful Hispanic woman because the latter had loaded approximately 20 items on the conveyer belt in the "10 items or less" check out line. The uptight, large but obviously glucose starved cashier was insisting that, because of the egregious violation of placing ten too many items on the check out line, she was not going to adjudicate the hot customer's order. Never mind that there was NOBODY else in line. Forget the fact that this hot mess of a cashier was doing precisely nothing before this customer's arrival, by golly she insisted of picking a fight with a paying consumer, a very hot, desirable, well dressed one at that (a true anamoly at that time and likely always in this location) for committing this mala in se violation. This cashier actually left her station in order to find the manager to back her/it/him/whatever up and lend credence to this absolute foolishness but had to return quickly to the O2 hose that likely sustained her during the four hour shift, along with endless supply of free moon pies. Unbelievable. The amount of time that this dolt wasted trying to make a point would have been better spent simply taking care of this elegant, thoughtful customer who clearly had to be amazed at the spectacle unfolding before her amazing brown eyes. Instead, we witnessed a clearly lazy, unsightly, pungent worker turn business away because, guess what? This lovely customer eventually lost her patience, uttered an expetive, left her 20 items on the conveyer belt and high heeled it out of this place. Whole Foods would likely be welcoming her 12 minutes later. Both my colleague and I certainly would have done so 45 or so later, but that's a different story. read more

Who even reviews supermarkets? I do, when they are spectacularly horrible enough that I need to go out of my way to write a review. Easily the worst supermarket I've ever been to. Not enough cashier's and all the ones that are here are super slow and don't care at all. Pretty rude too - no hello, no thanks, no bye. Often have went through checkout without a single word said to me at all. There's also never any carts. Once, the only two carts available had broken wheels. An update is much needed since your boy was way too kind. But in fairness, they did get progressively worse the more I came here. Actually I've stopped coming because I couldn't take it. The cashiers are slow as molasses (and forget friendly) and it was only tolerable when the self-checkout line wasn't long af, which wasn't often enough. I'm not a big fan of Jewel, for some reason the produce at all their locations just don't cut it. You have to really pick and sort through it. Other than that, they're A-OK as Yelp would call it. I do stop at this location more often than the others as Costco is nearby. Sometimes, you just don't need a months supply of lemons or some other little item for a recipe. I'd definately be a more regular shopper here if they upped their produce game. I really do want to love you, but I'm in an ongoing relationship with Pete's even though I don't get there as much as I would like to. It seems as though every visit to this Jewel I always end up leaving with the most ridiculous stories to share. The only reason I come here is convenience. The shopping experience at this jewel is unlike any other; it surprises me that this branch isn't any more chaotic based on it's poor staffing. Rules do not apply at this Jewel, the staff obviously have no control! And it's sad to say that it comes with the territory. I've seen it far too often: - people eating chicken as they shop, leaving bones in the most disrespectful places - half eaten potato chip bags, candy, deli foods, etc. - empty shelves - messy aisles - unhelpful staff ( I can go on! ) Tonight, my boyfriend and I were followed and harassed by a homeless man!?! Seriously, followed us with no shame and demanding money / food / help! When he was done with us he spotted a woman shopping alone in a frozen aisle and cornered her! Suh-KurRr-Rity?!!!?! When you are ready to check out there is usually 1-3 open cashiers... During rush hours? I often feel like the staff choose to ignore its customers and I don't blame them! This review is about the Osco on Roosevelt/Ashland store. Worse Osco I have ever shopped at. I go there only if I have no time to go to other grocery stores. It's the only grocery store close to me The staff is super rude, the store is dirty. I have seen chicken bones on the isles, soda bottles on the floor by the registers, empty battery boxes still hanging. Meats packets and other products that need to be refrigerated all over the place. If you ask a question to the employee, they keep talking inappropriately to their coworkers totally ignoring you. Why do you hire people who hate their jobs and have no basic social skills? A total shame, they don't care about their job or letting food go to waste. I have lived in this neighborhood for 9 months and the store has been consistently going down hill. Your rating is horrible and obviously you don't even attempt to improve things. I usually visit this Jewel if I need a few grocery items. Otherwise it is not my favorite store to do a ton of shopping. This location does not have the greatest of produce. I find myself looking at rotten fruit and slimy veggies. I really wish that I Can get more than just bananas, a bag of spinach, and sometimes lemons. The poultry department has a varital of meats. However, I'm a little disappointed that there is a small selection of lamb, bison, and veal. I usually pick up a pack of chicken and pork chops and that ends my trip in the poultry department. And then I'm off to get milk, eggs, and "vegan cheese???" I do wish the dairy section had more vegan items available. Like cheese and sour cream. I usually end with just getting a carton of eggs and almond milk. I then head into the frozen food isles for pizza and breakfast. Once I arrive, I grab a box of Eggo Waffles, and 1 four cheese Home Run Inn pizza. I usually run into the checkout from this point. Checkout usually takes a while once you decided which line potentially has less customers. Which is a little difficult as each check out line is created equally with it's over flow of customers. Once I approach the cashier after about 15-20 mins of waiting in line, I am greeted with a smiling face. This usually helps me to feel better about waiting in the long line. However, I'm faced with the question of "are you buying bags today?" I hate that damn question. Hey lady, I have bags right here. She proceed to ring up my items, and the bagger loads up all of my items into my grocery cart. I can finally escape, and run to my car. Grocery shopping is not an enjoyable experience for everyone, but I wish this location can at least try and have fresh produce, and more checkouts open. read more

Less than average experience but very convenient location. The produce section is so slow. It's a struggle finding someone to service you. Because I generally come here for fresh produce, I'm less than impressed. I will say they are usually clean. They could stand to hire more people. Management relies too heavily on the self checkout. This is our normal Jewel. I like that it's not sprawling and has everything we would need. The best part of this Jewel is that usually the weekend My Mixx It specials are always stocked. The bakery sometimes has cheap donuts, and they have multiple items on clearance at all times . These clearance items can be seen with red tags and easily identified walking down the aisles. read more

The lines here can be PAINFUL and even during peak hours (5 or 6 pm on a weekday) they seem to only be able to staff 2-3 lines. Self checkout used to be the secret way out - but alas no longer. This weekend I waiting halfway down one of the isles to get through the self checkout line. Deli counter waits can feel like slow torture - while I would love fresh deli meat I often find myself avoiding the deli for prepackaged... What Jewel has in selection and decent prices it seems to dump down the toilet with it's long lines and painfully slow staff. read more

I really like this Jewel, but I have experienced a lot of the same problems as the other reviewers. Maybe a part of me likes this Jewel because this used to be the only grocery store within reasonable distance of UIC's campus (you can walk from West Campus or take the Roosevelt bus from East). None of those stores at Canal and Roosevelt existed when I lived at UIC, so this place was my go-to for all things groceries (and I know tons of students still shop here). I agree that the parking lot can be totally insane. However, I've had the opposite problem of other reviewers: everyone is insanely slow. I feel like every time I come in here all of the idiot drivers in Illinois have congregated in this parking lot just to drift around slowly. It's as if no one understands where they're going or what is happening so it's impossible to get into a parking lane. The staff are OK - I've had completely polar experiences here so I'm not really sure how to feel about the employees overall. Some are totally rude and some are totally awesome, so it's really hit or miss. In general, I never need to talk to anyone, so I can avoid the people who are in a bad mood. The baggers in this store are awesome, mostly because a lot of them are my former students, so that's awesome. I know all of those guys are nice and polite, so that's a plus. The store itself is quite large - bigger than a lot of other Jewels in the area. There's tons of stuff in here and their produce generally seems to be in order. Every time I come in, someone is arranging, stocking or clearing out produce so I get the impression that they're on top of everything. There's also a large selection of take-and-go products for lunch, in case that's how you roll. The Osco selection is awesome, especially for seasonal stuff. This Osco has more seasonal selections than others in the area and that always makes me happy. Oh, and a huge $1 (or 10 for $10) section - yay! And it's in a giant strip mall complete with some food and some not-so-classy clothing stores. Who doesn't like grabbing a bite to eat after all of that grocery shopping? This is one of the better Jewel stores I have been to in this city. The main reason being it is never crowded when I go. I usually go after work to pick up groceries for dinner and it is never crowded. It is also one of the cleanest Jewels I've seen. May be it is because it is not crowded. Service is typical Jewel style, non-existent. You do not always find what you are looking for. But, I go there because I can shop at peace. read more

I love me the Jewel-Osco but this place is the pits for sure. Huge store, amazing selection but it is perpetually understaffed. I shopped here consistently for 6 months and was never able to run in and out because lines are always very long. The only plus side? The lines for check-out look like the lines for Space Mountain pre-Fast Pass era. The meat selection isn't as good as Dominick's, but the rest of their selections are ok. Nasty! I have been in this Jewel a couple times the past few weeks and every single time I've been in there the bathrooms have been absolutely disgusting. Thave smelled like pee and poop and most of them don't even have toilet paper. Obviously they don't have anyone who attends the bathrooms and they are so disgusting, you gag when you step in. My second complaint would be make sure you pay attention to the fruit because they have a lot of bugs inside the containers. Gross! read more

I go to the Jewel-Osco when: A) I've forgotten something I needed at a better grocery store that can't be purchased at the Mexican corner store B) I need liquor and happen to be driving down Ashland/Roosevelt Other than that, I find Jewel-Osco to have a really underwhelming yet overpriced selection of everything, and for some reason, there always seems to be 1000 people each buying a dozen things in every checkout aisle. It's like no one does ALL their grocery shopping there, just wants to clog up every checkout lane being just over the limit of items for the ten items or less express lane. And don't even get me started on the ridiculous stamp program, that would earn you a free cooking pot (retail value: $9.99, if that) once you've collected about $10000 worth of little "stamp saver" stamps that convert to 1 stamp per $10 spent. Howabout I just buy 50 cooking pots when I need them and skip the 50 cents you've added onto every item in the store paying for this program. I don't even find the RedBox here to be that great, or have much more that you couldn't find on Netflix/Amazon Prime. This Jewel is a store-of-last-resort! read more
