The yoga itself was great. The stretching was fantastic. But I objected to the metaphysical stuff like "feeling other peoples' energy"; that stuff simply isn't for me. Also, I understand that money is a vital part of any business, but I just got the feeling that they were too money-focused. The sales pitch at the end was much too intense. While I took a couple of classes that I really enjoyed here, I didn't return as I felt more pressured to sign a contract and hand over my money than I have ever felt at a used car lot (oh, and this place is by no means cheap!). The cozy-group-tea-time/bonding-time that ends each class is followed by a very intense sales pitch that made me so uncomfortable that I never returned, and even cringe every time I walk by this place. It's a shame because I think they have a good concept going on with their classes BUT greed and yoga just don't mix. As one Yelper mentioned it IS a business that obviously needs to make money but being so blatant and aggressive about it is a complete turn-off. Not to mention very anti-zen. read more

This is a weird yoga place.. We were interested in taking some classes and asked if there was a free trial like other places offer, but they told us it's $25! Since there was no free class, we asked if we could just peek in on the classroom, just to check out the atmosphere, but she said "No, you can not" and then went directly into her sales speech. I've been attending Body& Brain studio since September of 2016. After a few months of classes I started to feel major positive changes in my overall wellness. Migraines were gone, I was getting full night's sleep, my anxiety decreased. My colleagues at work and friends started to compliment me on my relaxed and calm demeanor. Keep in mind that this isn't your typical yoga studio and familiar poses. I've been going to the center for about 3 years now. The best decision I have ever made for myself!! My constant back pain is gone completely, I actually straitened my spine and become taller! The knee pain is gone! And my high blood pressure is much lower. And that's only physical condition. Not mentioning stress relief after each class, no anxiety during a day, I quit my all bad habits and switched to a healthier diet. I never felt better!! I would classify this place as an internal martial arts studio, focusing on meditation and tai chi. They also practice a Korean style yoga, which is slower and focused inward rathe than on postures/asanas. Atmosphere: the studio is large and can comfortably accommodate a class of about 20 people. The reception area is small. Tea is served after class. The teachers (seem to be 2 main people) make an effort to individually welcome each student and encourage socializing. There is a bit of a cult vibe, but if you are assertive enough to resist being sold into a workshop, the teachers are not too pushy. The students vary in age, but most are middle aged women. Everyone is especially friendly and warm. Classes: plan on being there for 90 minutes- 10 minute warm up? 75 minutes class, followed by tea. If you buy a package, you are also offered special classes a couple of times a month. These include educations, potluck dinners and propaganda ish movies, and workshops. They're a fun way to make friends. I have found that I am relaxed and centered after class, which helps me deal with the ever-present group think. read more

I don't like to write a bad review but... This buisiness is too money-focused. The sales pitch was much too intense - they VERY PUSHY about getting new workshops, annual memberships. Just because of their pressure I got membership for 6 months. I decided to leave this place 2 months before my membership ends. When I asked for a refund, they refused to give it to me because "membership cannot be cancelled due to the contract". What?! They even didn't give me and my friend a chance to read it before signing. My friend was smart enough to leave this center in two weeks. I was not that smart to do the same. Their yoga was just ok... Hitting my stomach for 20 minutes like zombie... (they called it "abdominal tapping") than 20 minutes stretching and about 30 minutes meditation... That is not for me, probably that is why there are almost 90% of mature adults Also, they don't even have a free first introductory class - they asking for 25$ and right after the first class pushing to sign the contract. And a few weeks later male teacher asked me to share my "positive review" on google/yelp,,, So now it is a time for my very honest review. I think yoga is supposed to be centering, intuitive, friend honest, open, healthy. This place has the complete opposite philosophy at its core Go somewhere else, pretty much anywhere else where you come to relax from your day. So disappointed. Will never go back! Please read all the reviews before you go in. While I did enjoy my first $25 class, I would not return. Although the instructor did seem knowledgeable, man were they pushy. Even just signing up for the intro class the front desk lady was already telling me I needed to pay $25 so they knew for sure I was coming. Like I wouldn't pay right after the class. Anyways, finally after the intro class, the instructor immediately tells me she wants to talk to me. She again told me all the good benefits of yoga and strongly suggests I must come 2 days of the week minimum. She only keeps telling me about monthly memberships and workshops (which btw are not cheap AT ALL) and she keeps beating around the bush, like she wants me to jump up and say ABSOLUTELY I WANT TO PAY. It made me uncomfortable the during and after the class. She literally wouldn't let me get up and go, thankfully I didn't carry any cards on me that day as I wasn't sure if there was a locker situation. If not, I assure you I would have succumb to the peer pressure and would be paying for a very expensive membership right now. She then says oh okay, how about the 10 classes and then at the end you can pay off the difference of the other membership. She then say "please call me as soon as you get home with your card information." I decide not to do so. So you would think that would be the end, NOPE. She begins to text me, telling me when they can expect my card information. I told her at this point, I don't think it's in my best interest to buy a membership and then she offers me a "monthly trial package" which was never ever mentioned before. I just decide on this point not to answer them as they are just really pushy sales people, and I don't need this type of stress from something that's supposed to help me calm down. read more

I have never been to the New York location, but I have practiced in Pasadena for close to one year. I would just like to answer those people who say it is not tai chi. I have done tai chi for most of my life and practiced recently with a wonderful group of Chinese people in the park. I want to say that the tai chi done in Body N Brain had advantages above that which was done in the park with authentic Chinese from Tai Wan and Hong Kong. It seems to accentuate the therapeutic aspects of tai chi and to get closer to the essence of tai chi which is of course chi energy. Some people have complained about tapping as being painful. That makes me smile. I wonder how old these people are. If you are twenty-five and in splendid health maybe you don't see the point. After all it's not "Swedish Massage." I found the tapping on the back wonderfully refreshing and relaxing. I was so excited about this simple form of therapeutic massage that I did it to my doctor and he enjoyed it too. I'm in my seventies and my doctor in his sixties. I suspect that a lot of the uneasiness about dahn yoga (which I share) may come from cross cultural lack of communication. People in Asia simply experience things differently than us Americans. I've struggled with this problem for a very long time and still have not found a comfortable resolution. I do find that the courses are too expensive and I have complained a lot about this. There is a very hard sell. They do try to lock you into a very long commitment and a big financial commitment. I have complained that the dahn master I worked with is like a car salesman and that I was subjected to "brain washing." On the other hand, they have given me help for my physical ailments I couldn't find anywhere else. So I have not come to any final determination about dahn yoga. There are a lot of other things in life and in society one can complain about, and singling out dahn yoga might be counterproductive. What about all the unhealthy and overpriced food that is given us in restaurants and stores. At the bodynbrain retreat I went to the food was amazingly good. read more

I decided to step in to Body & Brain Yoga a couple of months ago, just for a drop-in class. Instead, I was welcomed into a warm community, and ended up going a couple of times a week. I was introduced to and educated about new ways to calm my spirit and clear stagnant energy. If you use the tools and attend class regularly you will without a doubt see a difference in your outlook and see a noticeable physical difference in terms of lightness and positivity. The key is to continue your practice and be consistent. I really liked how I felt after class. I have been looking for a way to feel "connected" and I was able to do that just through movement. They did something called "brain wave vibration" which reminded me of Native American or other indigenous dances that use drums and shaking. I felt in contact with a larger sense of who I am and how I can use my body to increase self awareness. I also appreciated the smiles and welcoming manner of the teacher I had. read more

My neurologist prescribed tai chi for me. I practice in a great location in Manhattan. I wanted more floor time to practice, mimicking more experienced practitioners so I made an appointment. This was NOT tai chi. We were stretching on the floor, also punching ourselves in the stomach. I've read the other reviews and they say there is a hard sell. I did not experience that, I was in a big hurry to leave and not happy. I just want my money back. I contacted Customer Service twice with no response. I have been a member for over a year and I'm affraid my English may not be good enough to express my gratitude! My flexibilty, sleep, digestion, immunity and ability to controll my thoughts and emotios - all have improved. I also felt uncomfortable about the money part, they are more expensive than some other yoga practices i've been to. But as I was seeing results/changes in my body and mind I made my choice. I realized it all came down to my choice: i will spend the money anyway, but on what: another pair of shoes or something along those lines... or my health and peace of mind? I was not able to buy that anywhere else until i found Dahn Yoga, so the hell with those shoes! lol Great stretching, real meditation. They taught me to understand my body and my brain better and through special trainings like Shim Sung and BMT (Brain Managemen Training) i was able to actually EXPERIENCE my soul, not just talk about it, and manage my body, my thoughts and emotions better. First I would like to say do not get discouraged from reading the other reviews obviously everyone else has their own opinion and experiences. I came to the yoga center because I was suffering from stomach issues and I was sick of tired of taking medications. So I was walking along third avenue and I noticed the tai chi and yoga logo. I figure why not give this a try. The people in the yoga center were soooo nice they really make you feel welcomed. It's such a great atmosphere, everyone is always smiling, in a good mood which is relief from the outside world. Seriously they were really nice if you don't believe come check it out! Anyways back to what I was saying :) I come here every other day after work and my stomach has improved, and I lost so much weight!!! My eating habits have drastically improved, my overall being highly improved. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this to people with any type of problem whether it is related to stress, physical pain, or just emotional pain-this is a great way to start creating a positive change for the betterment of your body and health. read more

I decided to try the classes here. The people seem very nice and I certainly felt better when I left. I'm not a fan of hitting my stomach for 10 mins to get energy moving, though. Most reputable businesses post bios of their instructors on their website so you are fully informed of who is giving you direction and what their educational background is. This place provides no such information. If a person is claiming to be a "master" I want proof of education and skill. When I asked directly about background I received a nervous laugh with no explanation in return. When signing up and presented with the contract, the pages were turned for me and held so that I wasn't reading what was stated and asked to initial 3 copies. Later I noticed the backside of the contract indicates you are giving them permission to use your image. For any newcomers I suggest taking the contract home to read before signing. Will see how these classes are going forward. read more

I was referred by my friend, I was scared, anxious and over stressed. Initially I was apprehensive cuz it was all new to me but months later I feel less stressed (vibration Friday class)helps, variety of other classes helped me physically, mentally and emotionally. If u ever look to do something for yourself, this is it. You connect with others and realize u r not alone. It changed things within me and has opened my eyes to so many things that surrounded me throughout my life in a negative way. Although I spend a lot of time researching reviews, I've never actually written one before until today. I've been practicing Dahn Yoga for about 2 months now and the changes I've noticed in myself are astounding - I am sleeping better, I'm recovering from colds faster, my lower back sciatica pains that I used to experience every night are gone, I'm more focused, my family has commented that my posture and complexion have improved, and I've lost weight (including those last couple of pounds of post-baby weight that are supposed to be impossible to lose). My acupuncturist had recommended yoga for my conditions and my mother-in-law, who's a yogi, had once advised that I also need to take a more proactive approach to improving my health. I signed up for a trial without understanding the difference between Dahn Yoga and traditional yoga. I've done yoga, Taichi, and Qigong before and experienced the benefits of all - these classes incorporate a bit of everything as well as cardio and brain exercises to keep you fit and alert. Initially, I felt silly while doing some of the exercises, but I felt really good after class - lighter and more relaxed. I started off with three days a week, but noticed a big difference in the way I felt on days I went versus days I didn't go to class so I increased my classes to 5 days a week. Although I'm also not the type of person to pay to exercise (I usually walk, engage in other outdoor sports, or do DVDs), I'm really glad I signed up for a package that gave me a sample of a workshop and one-on-one session. The one-on-one sessions and workshops have played an integral role in my emotional healing and have improved my relationships with my family members. Since taking the classes, receiving private treatment, participating in workshops, and reading the Belly Button Healing and Human Technology books, I feel better equipped to cope with stress and empowered with the ability to help myself and my family physically and emotionally. More importantly, I'm rediscovering my purpose in this life and the joy I feel when I am helping others, which is why I feel compelled to share my experiences here. We invest financially in our education, our retirement, our children's future, and spend frivolously on material things that won't bring us long term joy. It makes sense to invest in our health so rather than merely surviving or suffering through life we can actually enjoy the life we worked so hard to build with those we love. I drifted into Dahn Yoga a few months ago and I'm so glad I did! At first I was a bit skeptical of some of the practices, but decided to stick with it because I wasn't in great shape and I liked the fact that all fitness levels can comfortably do Dahn Yoga. (I wasn't ready for Hot Yoga or complicated pretzel poses.) I was also interested in the meditation component of the classes since I tend to have a "busy mind". After a few classes I was offered a one year membership and I was told that the more often I did Dahn Yoga the more I'd get out of it. I went for it, deciding that this commitment would force me to go more often, and I needed a regular practice. Anyway, I'm so glad that I pushed through my initial skepticism. I've been going regularly for 8+ months and as we say at the end of every class "I feel great!" My tendonitis is gone, as well as the migraine headaches I used to get. I'm stronger, more flexible, my posture has improved, and I'm breathing more fully and deeply, not just in class, but in my day to day life. The instructors are great! Each one different from the next, with all the classes varied enough to prevent me from getting bored. I also like the diversity of students -- young, old, very fit, unfit -- everyone does things at their own pace. An interesting group of people. read more

I went for a taichi class, people there were nice and warm, nice atmosphere , unfortunately it wasn't Taichi at all, it was some kind of relaxing movements and body stretching , so that was disappointing they shouldn't call the class Taichi class if it doesn't have any Taichi. read more

I am an advanced yoga practitioner and I am familiar with various New Age healing methods, but, let me tell you, this place sucks. First, the employees assume a lot about you and talk to you a little like street psychics. They try to brain wash you and then quickly manipulate into spending a lot of money. They practically won't let you leave the premises without signing up. Because of the hocus pocus/manipulative vibe, I felt as if I got ensnared by a cult. In addition, I felt zero difference whatsoever from my intro one-on-one healing session and from the first lesson. been a attending class about 2-3 months now,2-3 times a week I go in.this is not ur average yoga mind you. the dahn approach is to open up all your meridian pathways so energy flows more freely throughout your body. this is done through a pretty physical calisthenic routine, that is slightly different each in each class.the theory goes: that As energy moves more freely, that not only minor symptoms and aches disappear, but major systemic conditions improve as well. I have heard a lot of life enhancing testimonials from practitioners: losing serious weight, chronic this and that disappearing, blood pressure evening out, cholesterol, back pain,head aches, all that jazz improving simply from doing these exercises. so cool that. what have I experienced, well I'm ridiculously more flexible( I truly believe a flexible body houses a flexible mind, YO!) more interestingly though is that I'm a lot calmer, about 3 weeks into beginning, I noticed how much my level of underlying anxiety/misanthropy (that I believe every new yorker shares) decreases after every class. I'm much more in tune now, Now I got a built in stress odometer to whats up. believe you me, in this city that inherent low level anxiety is the sea we swim in, people walk around (and god help us, Drive around) at a low simmer, constantly. and then we drink,smoke, overeat, and vice to deal with it. So I notice after class for about 3 days, I am a very chill duck, who doesn't overreact at every small turn. Calmer, less erratic in thought, and dare I say, saner. Speaking from experience, we can all use sum energy work. How could this place not get 5 stars?! These instructors are nothing short of amazing and so are the members. Everyone is so caring, it's like my new family. They are firm when you need that little push! I was in bad condition when I started and now I'm hooked. I'm stronger, more confident, relaxed and all the more happier. Joining the center was one of the best things I could've done for myself. And I'm going to keep going! Ages vary so no matter how old, how young you are, they got a place for all of us! The classes make me work up a sweat, helps my anxiety with breathing and meditation. The prices aren't unreasonable, it definitely did me a lot of good and it was worth the cost. They have many workshops that weren't disappointing at all, I learned something about myself each time. I don't know about you but I want to get better and be better. They are all very supportive and I just love everyone there! Highly recommended, join in on the fun! I don't even know where to start. I went for a trial class and I've been in pain ever since. Like, serious pain. Do your research before you even consider going to this place. It is very cult-like. It's hardly "yoga". I should have walked out as soon as they had us punching ourselves in the abdomen. For some reason, I stayed. I guess its my fault. I just don't get this place. The pitch is indeed very hard. They want your money and they want you to sign up for life. At one point during what we were told were "intestinal excercises" the "master" came around and started pressing VERY hard on my chest and down towards my abdomen and told me I had lots of "blockages". She asked if it hurt and I said yes but she continued to press her fingers into my thorax. Unfortunately, we had to fill out a registration form before the session which waived any liability or else I would sue. I came home and Googled "Dahn Yoga" and sure enough I learned its a cult.
