Once the Drs diagnosed his medical problem and had him feeling better he was transferred to Hale Makua for rehab physio as he was a fall risk. He has been working very hard at physio daily and is walking and standing well now. I visited him in HM and he was in a double room, with a garden outlook, with access to a shared covered lanai area with dining tables and chairs. HM is airy with open corridors and shared spaces with gardens to sit in and staff present everywhere helping everyone. When I arrived I didn't know where my friend was and a staff member asked me if I needed assistance and walked me to his room chatting pleasantly as we walked. She knew exactly who he was and which room he was in. Kudos to the staff! I'm going in next week and will sit with him at the tables in the lanai area with ice cream. Hale Makua is a fantastic nursing facility for the elderly who cannot look after themselves, with a family feel, open and inviting. I was very impressed.

This skilled nursing facility which was the original main hospital in Wailuku has been in business since 1966. But yelpers must not have the need for this type of place. I brought my mother over here who will turn 100 years old in January. She was admitted last week. I must say it was a hard decision to take her there from a retirement home which which was basically an apartment with a dining room and then from our own home. It was the time of life that she needed much more care. I must say that the building is a little dated but overall it is well-maintained. The most important thing is that the staff is exemplary. I was so impressed by the caring and attention they give all of the residence. There is a big game room with television, videos, puzzles games and always a CNA on duty to help all of their clients. There is a beautiful sunroom also used for dining and then the big dining room. The grounds are beautiful. But again it's the people that are so impressive. I was told that there are 10 patients per CNA but it sure does not feel that way. I would highly suggest anyone looking for someplace for their loved one that needs 24 hour care to consider this, I won't call it a facility because it's at home where they want the residence and the families and friends of the residents to all feel like family. aside from the two counselors i spoke to, (one only briefly) the rest of the staff were incredible…read more the rooms are comfortable, the blackout period is relatively short, my time was cut very short due to personal reasons, but the chefs are amazing at what they do, the accommodations overall, and the little treatment i received was really amazing. they're gentle, aside from the two mentioned above. the nurses are absolutely amazing, the house manager is amazing. just all around great people! now for the bad, the therapists, who you'd think would be the most gentle, had no compassion, as well as the male didn't respect the privacy of the trauma i experienced, he was loud about stuff i went through, mind you the room we meet in is not private at all! but aside from that, they offer so many good things, if your main issue is substance abuse, i'd definitely recommend this place, if your main issue is mental, like trauma, anxiety, depression.. i'd recommend seeking care elsewhere, the view is stunning though, so that's always reason to go.

It's not just about the beautiful grounds, it's the quality of the therapists, Koutura, Dr. J, Kate...not to mention the amazing techs like Dimo, Kevin, etc. The small client to staff ratio means an unparalleled individualized experience that larger centers can't offer. There are 8 of us here and I have built a family. Two weeks in to treatment and I have zero complaints. For anyone who said it's nothing like the pictures, they are flat out wrong. I probably have what would be considered the least "luxurious" room in the house and it's still paradise. Besides the individual and group therapy and chef cooked meals, I've done things I never would have thought I was capable of. I jumped off a cliff, stood on a surfboard, snorkeled with turtles, attended AA cookouts. I have a family here and my only regret is that it will end in two weeks. Thank you to Maui Recovery for allowing me the opportunity to get sober and for giving me the tools I need to go home and continue to live a clean life. Now it's up to me to do the work. Attaching pictures for anyone that has doubts. Remember, this is the least fancy room. The others are much nicer.
