It is a good lumber yard, but not customer centric. If you are not a regular customer you need to pay attention, as a non regular customer, my experience was back of the line, surface planning work below average and cross cutting to length with crappy outdoor saw. I guess regular customers get a second pass through surfacing and cross cuts using indoor saw with "professional" results. read more

I was getting some woodworking lessons and coming to Bohnhoff was part of the class. I met up with my instructor and went over what type of lumber I wanted for my project. Bohnhoff has an 'irregular' pile-pieces of lumber that aren't in normal lengths. Since I wasn't making a deck or a boat or anything it was easy and easy on the wallet to find some pieces of wood that I needed. The guys at the lumber yard were great and it was easy to make my purchase. They gave the option for delivery but we managed to fit it into my instructor's car. I reached out to Bohnhoff through Yelp and got a quick reply from Mike to give him a call to discuss my project. Mike was super helpful, to say the least. He worked with me to keep the project within my budget, figure out the type of wood that would fit my needs, and I never felt like I was being taken advantage of or pushed in a direction I didn't want to go. Been coming here for rough lumber for a couple of years now. Quality has gone done noticeably. Still good but I find myself wasting my boards than needed because of flaws in the wood. Also I find them out of stock of the stuff I need more often than not. I'm a hobbyist so I just wait but gets annoying. Most of the time service is great and most of the folks that work there are stand up individuals and very helpful. I picked up an order that I didn't hand pick to save on time and man they had to be all the rejects in the pile and some of it wasn't even the right thickness. Most of what I got was warped and cupped. Paid for 5/4 board and if I was lucky got short boards of 7/8s by the end. Barely usable. I should have rejected the selection but I was pressed for time. They do have a large selection and good wood just take your time and select yourself. read more

I'm an amateur / DIYer, and my visit to Bohnhoff was my first to a non-big-box lumber company, so I was a bit out of my element. The staff were all really helpful and friendly, and they didn't make me feel at all like a newbie. They helped my find a walnut board that would work well for my furniture project, and they helped clean up the straight edge side for me and gave it a few quick runs through the planer. The most wonderful, and kind folks you'd ever hope to meet as a newbie woodworker. A couple years ago I decided to build my own couch. I had gone to several other businesses looking for some advice and boards to build a project because they seemed less intimidating than going to a lumberyard. They were dismissive, rude, and made me feel like I was well in over my head. I dropped into Bohnhoff fully expecting to be overwhelmed by the selection and my lack of knowledge. The entire team were SO nice and helpful! They were excited when I explained I was brand new to woodworking, building a couch from scratch, and could not have been more helpful in explaining to me everything I needed to know, and left me to select my boards. Since I had no major tools on hand, they quickly milled the lumber to my exact specs, and I picked it up the next day! 18 months later, I'm updating the arms of that same couch now that I know more about woodworking, and I was so pleased to get the same level of service and advice over the phone due to Covid safety. Don't let your inexperience get in the way of choosing your lumber here! Not a rude or unkind person in the bunch. I had a small project making ornaments with a water jet cutter and they were extremely helpful and knowledgeable. They took the time out to show me all types of wood and explained the quality compared to home depot. Which I found out, alot of Home Depots wood is crap. I press the ring the nice guy came right out I had already been exhausted from going several places he grabbed the broken wood I had and went right to a good nice priced wood that I could use he was very nice and generous he even went the extra mile to measure and cut it for me and even put holes in it for me! IF YOU NEED WOOD / LUMBER - CHECK IT OUT! I called them, spoke to Dave and asked him about a specific kind of lumber that no one else had or could get their hands on. They had it! I mean he was only a couple minutes if that an knew the inventory, specifications and pricing. They were very professional and helpful! Dave told me to come on down... so I went down to take a look and yep, it was there,just as they said! Right when I walked in, i was quickly greeted and they were more than happy to help me. In fact they directed outside to the location of the lumber and HAPPY quickly greeted me. Yep his name is HAPPY and he was happy, which made me happy! They even quickly sanded down a raw sample for me and quoted me prices. Bam so simple, to the point and life is easy! I TOTALLY recommend this place! read more

Can't speak as to their selection or their quality. It might be great, who knows. Drove there this morning to have a look and see what was available. Was told when I arrived that I needed an appointment. It was a 35 mile drive. I mentioned it wasn't posted on their website. I was told it was. But these things happen, I couldn't wait, so I left. Double checking after I got home as of today, it's not posted on their website, their Yelp page or their instagram. So I called to let them know and suggest they do post it so other people don't make a futile trip. The reaction was, paraphrasing here, "they told me it was on our site". I said it wasn't, just wanted to let them know, and they should really post it. The end of this conversation should have been, "hey thanks for letting us know". But instead I got, again paraphrasing, "no other yards will let you just show up and look". Which is ridiculous I went to three that afternoon that do. And which isn't the point. So if you're going to visit, please make sure and make an appointment and perhaps you'll have a better experience with a team member than I did. I wasn't happy about the wasted drive, but I was even less happy at the reaction. I guess they have a good selection. I like that they carry multiple thicknesses 5/4 and up and it seems many varieties. But from what I can tell, currently, you explain the wood variety you want to see and they bring it out on a palette for you to look through. It's a bit hard when you want to see what varieties and offerings they do have so you can make a decision based on availability, price and the piece you're making. So again, you need an appointment, so call ahead. read more

Called in to see if they had a type of lumber I was looking for and spoke to Dave. He spent a good amount of time on the phone answering my amateur diy questions about wood types for stairs. He is a wealth of knowledge and educated me on what wood was best for the elements and exactly what type of wood (grade, sizing, etc.) I needed to complete my project. A MUST READ FOR A NEW WOODWORKERS OR THOSE INEXPERIENCED WITH LUMBER YARDS. A lot of the issues that arise at lumber yards are not caused by either party. The issues mainly come from a lack of understanding, especially by customers, about what to expect. So, I am going to tell you. First, be prepared to spend at least a few hours there. It is a bit time-consuming, so buy a bunch to make it worth it. Bring water, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a jacket if cold, good gloves, a pad of paper, and a tape measure. And a car big enough to handle big long boards (or you can have them cut smaller) It can be a bit intimidateing, the first time, so if possible, best to go with an experienced person, but not necessary. Ok, so you arrive, park, and walk in ready to grab wood. You will see guys driving forklifts and many stacks of lumber. I suggest walking around and looking at all the types of lumber. Start outside and then end walking through the huge hanger/outside building. Chances are, nobody will come racing over to assist you. In many cases, you will need a forklift to move wood of a stack for you to pick a board. Dont be shy. Be polite. Please and thank you go a long way. Restack your wood when done looking. The wood is sold by the board foot, not piece. Having some knowledge of wood language...4/4 5/4 6/4 8/4 is critical...as that is how boards are sold. Look on youtube for guys who love to talk about this stuff. Also the prices are not marked. You should ask inside the office before you start. They will say..."$8 per board foot....or whatever the price is. A bf, which stands for board foot, is a 1" piece of 12"x12" board....or the mathematical equivalent 1" piece of 6"x24" board. See? You should have stayed awake in math class. The magic formula is....write this down on your phone..... The price per board is (in inches) length x width x thickness divided by 144 = total board feet x price per bf. So if a board is 6$ per bf (board foot) and the board is 10 ft long (120 inches) and is 6" wide and 1" thick We take 120x6x1=720 divide by 144 = 5bf Most times it will not be a whole number....it will be 5.73 Whatever the answer. We now take 5bf x 6$ per bf = 30$ price of board. Note, wood is not cheap....plan on between 4$-18$ a board foot....more for real exotics. When you go home you will have the best cheapest wood around. Most of their wood is rough but they do milling. read more

Stacks and stacks of wood stacked on top of other stacks of wood. You can spend hours walking up and down the dusty aisles here and examining their extensive inventory (nobody will bother you), or you can just flag down one of the people working the yard and ask for advice. The 4/4 white ash I was looking for was on the bottom of one of their mega-stacks, but one of their forklift guys rearranged the stacks for me and had my pile ready for inspection lickety-split. Bring some gloves and get ready to dig around and find those perfect planks and then flag down another one of their guys to tally up when you're ready to go. If you've been doing your homework / comparison shopping, you should be pleasantly surprised at the total. (They're so well-known that when calling around the other area lumber yards for prices and availability of the 6/4 white ash that I was originally looking for, one of the other yards told me that most places wouldn't carry white ash in 6/4 and that I should just quit wasting my time and pay a visit to Bohnhoff.) One of their saws was down when I visited, so my ripping / S2S milling couldn't get completed that day, but they did deliver to my mid-city address for $60 later that week. Also, because I apparently lack foresight, one of the planks I'd chosen was a bit crooked and they weren't able to rip it to produce 2 pieces of the desired width, but they did call me to let me know and to suggest a solution to the issue--great communication. The delivery guy was super friendly and we chatted about my project, fishing trips, etc. I promised to send him a photo of the dining table when it was complete (and if I can figure out how to upload via Yelp, I will actually do this). All in all, good people, good product. read more

Quality Lumber, Specialized Services, for the Trade Very Reasonable Prices. I am a furniture maker and do all my own home improvement projects. This place is a gem if you know what you want, don't need a lot of hand holding, and are willing to spend some time at the yard, this place is heaven. This place caters to the trade, so if you don't know what FAS, CDX, or 5/4 lumber is, then you might get snubbed. Cabinet Grade Plywood is $99 a sheet at Anderson Plywood, which is not a bad price, and they have great customer service. Fine. At Bohnhoff Lumber the price is about $66. Drawbacks include not being open early or late (strictly 8-5 hours) and not being open on Saturday. It is also a PITA finding this place and navigating this part of town. Personally, this is the best lumber yard in town, in my judgment. PS the dog's name is "Rusty," and the Cat, which really runs the place is "Chief" read more

A Woodworker's Dream. Lumber stacked to the sky in an airplane hanger. I bought about $800 dollars worth of quartersawn white oak for a dining table here. The prices are competitive and the selection is amazing. This is one of the only places in L.A.. where you can but rough hardwood lumber. The wait wasn't great, but this place had other orders to fill before me and it is worth any waiting.. So plan for a wait and be surprised if not. It took an afternoon to wait for help, pick out my lumber and pay. The workers were very helpful. They let me search the stacks and then helped me load. I look forward to returning. read more

Man this place is legit as it can possibly get when it comes to anything wood, if you need it, they will get it. If you think you can find I on line or cheaper from a giant wood supply place like Jones or the Depot,that is all well and good; however, you are not guaranteed to get the top quality at a good price with awesome customer service. It is like a family over there and everyone works well each other , which is always a good sign. The office has a couple of dogs chilling out, as well as a cat and a few birds in a cage. If you are looking for great raw Hardwood Lumber, this is the best place in town, bar none. I had a cabinet shop for 15 years and purchased material from every place in LA, and Bohnhoff is the best. When you drive up, be prepared to be underwhelmed. The warehouse is old and aging, and even the new paint from a couple of years ago, is peeling off. But inside you will find the best selection of the best lumber in the city. The people are friendly ( for the most part) and always helpful, even if they are bit grouchy sometimes. If you go in with a smile, you will get a smile in return. The staff is knowledgable and helpful. Charlie Bohnhoff , the owner, who is in his 80's is an amazing man, and still works out in the yard, and makes deliveries! Everytime I place an order, of whatever size, he thanks me for my business in the most genuine and heartfelt way. Walt Maas, who works in the office is perhaps the nicest person I have ever met in my life. He is helpful, and will work with you on getting exactly the materials you need or the information you need. These 2 people are the core of Bohnhoff lumber and insure that it stays at the highest level of what a business should be. It does not matter if you are buying one peice of walnut or a unit of plywood, the service here is amazing. I highly recommend this as your one stop hardwood supplier, and on top of that, they have the best prices in town. read more

The wood is good. The guys in the yard do a great job. However, I just got called back to make an additional payment as a result of the guys in the office not doing a good job. I bought 4 sizes of walnut. 2 of the 4 sizes were either wrong or mis-categorized. That is 50% error. Not a great average. For a business with such a legacy, this is extremely disappointing. I get a call at 8am the next week demanding payment for your lack of attention and professionalism. I don't mind paying for the goods I purchase. I do mind being called back to fix other peoples mistakes. Bohnhoff needs to find a way to hold their office staff to a higher level of accuracy and accountability. This experience has been unacceptable. THis practice was justified to me by the office staff on the phone as an occurrence that is NOT at all unusual or uncommon. You are not a new business, Bohnhoff, and you can certainly do better. Update: Bohnhoff quickly responded to my review with an appropriate tone and message. I continue to use their business, but this was not a great interaction from my end. read more
