Wow, the service here is a mixed bag. Some people are cordial and friendly, what I consider "normal," while others possess astoundingly bad social skills. I will still come here though for the prices. Case in point: a sheet of baltic birch here was $59; at Anderson Plywood it was $99. Walnut dowels were around $2 when Rockler and Amazon were both about $4. I don't think they care what Yelp reviews say because their bread and butter is from businesses, not woodworking dilettantes like myself. I'd say go to Anderson for decent service or if you are a n00b that needs some coddling. Come here if you want good prices. read more

Some of the best customer service I've found ANYwhere. All I needed was a small piece of wood for a carving project. I wasn't sure what type of wood would work best for what I was doing, so they recommended several different types, varying in hardness, and gave me half a dozen sample pieces (of generous size!) to take home and try out. Ok, this is my second review, I think, and my third time purchasing from them. My first two orders were large because I was building a fence, but this last order, I am embarrassed to say, I just needed one piece of wood for to place on top of my dining room cabinets. So I speak to One of the guys and explain that I am looking for poplar wood and that the width needs to be at least 14 inches (most boards are cut at 12). So there are a variety of stacks of poplar wood and we located one of the boards, of course it has to be at the top stack located somewhere in the middle. The guys calls over one of the fork lift operators and he attempts to move two of the stacks just so that he can get to the top stack located 20 feet high. I tell my boyfriend that I am so embarrassed that they are going through all this trouble for one piece of wood, which they didn't know. I tried to explain to the worker that it was not necessary to move all that wood because I was only purchasing one piece of wood and I can try and find it in the lower piles of wood. He didn't even flinch when I said one piece of wood and assured me that it wasn't a problem. WOW, that is customer service. So I found my wood, got it milled, brought it home and stained it and it came out amazing. They are an Los Angeles institution and I've been coming here for years for my wood projects and they never disappoint. It's a bit out of the way, but I love the selection, attention and courtesy that they show. Bohnhoff has great prices, good luck finding better prices anywhere and i mean anywhere. They are very helpful but it is best to come in understanding a little bit about lumber yard wording. Most of the would appears to be FAS and is stored in open atmosphere with a covering. read more

Went to Bohnhoff the other day to try and match a piece of wood for a table I was restoring, but didn't really know exactly what species it was. The receptionist inside pointed me to the Yard and told me to ask for Happy. Being that it was my first time at Bohnhoff, I was a little worried that I spend the next 30 mins searching for some guy with little luck of every finding him (see: shopping at BMC - which is a 10th the size - and never finding anyone who works there) but I easily found Happy in the yard and showed him what I had. It took a little bit of trial and error, but Happy spent a ton of time with me showing me the options and walking me through the yard. After about 5 or 10 minutes of looking, he said he was going to go ask someone else for their opinion and come back. I assumed that was his nice way of saying he'd spent enough time with me and I was now on my own, but I'll be damned he came back and found me a couple minutes later with more options. We found what I was looking for - which ended up being a other obscure exotic, that they had plenty of stock of - go it cut and loaded, and I was on my way. TL:DR - This place is great! From novice to expert they have what need and spend the time making sure every customer leaves satisfied. This is my favorite lumber yard. The staff is available and helpful. The wood is top quality and most importantly, I can pick my boards.

I've been going here for nearly 10 years. An absolute great bunch of people with an incredible selection and prices that can't be beat for a 50 mile radius (at least from what I've experienced). You can buy one board, or 100, they will move 10 tons of wood so you can pick what you need. A rare find these days to posses all of the above qualities, but I guess that's why they've been around over 100 years now. I actually like spending money there knowing I'm supporting a great business. RIP Jaime and Alan. I hope Saul is shanked to death in prison for what he did. read more

I recently moved to Socal and have been looking high and low for a great hardwood yard. There just aren't many of them, especially ones that let you hand pick boards. The name Bohnhoff kept coming up but it was over 3 hours round trip for me. I emailed back and forth for a few days getting all the pricing and stock info I needed. Once there the service was fantastic. Happy was patient and helpful as I needed multiple wood types, thicknesses and a lot of them. Everyone I met was friendly and helpful without prompt. Prob the most impressive thing came the next day. I got a call that they had glanced at my order the next morning and realized they overcharged by 10 board feet (a tiny fraction of my order) and would be refunding the difference. I obviously hadn't noticed and would be writing a good review regardless. It just goes to show the quality of ownership to check, own up & correct a simple mistake. I can't recommend Bohnhoff enough. read more
