    Thighs Combo $ 12.60
    Rick V.

Haven't been here for a while. In on a rainy Sunday afternoon at 5 for dinner. Pretty busy. Ordered: 3 thighs, French fries, biscuit, a soda & 2 dipping sauces. $ 12.60 The fries and biscuit were good. I don't know why their chicken comes out soooo dark, sooooo crunchy and dried out on the outside. The meat is good but the outside is hard to eat. May or May Not go back.

    In the door.

I ran inside for a quick lunch takeout. They were fast. They were friendly. My food was good and warm. Dine in wasn't an option. They met my expectations.

Apparently they can't read I ordered a steak biscuit combo Bo size with Bo rounds. Yes I should of checked but drove back out to main highway before I realized I got a ham biscuit that barely had ham on it which I didn't want and did get the Bo rounds but not Bo size I mean you can't even get a simple order right come on

And offer specials each day. Lots of meat options and veggie options. Including salad, which isn't always available in a homestyle southern restaurant. The roasted potatoes that are available only on Fridays were my favorite part of the platter. So flavorful and perfectly seasoned. The Mac n cheese was also very good. Creamy and cheesy. The hush puppies were HUGE and very crispy. Loved them. I ordered along with two coworkers. Coworker one is now in love with this place and wants to order at least once a week. Coworker two ordered meatloaf and said it was quite tasty. Negatives: Be prepared for the salt!!!!! We ordered from here twice. We got the chicken pie both times and it was wayyyyy to salty. The first order I was able to combine with the potatoes and Mac n cheese to make it edible. But the second order, all the sides were salty too and I ended up not being able to finish most of the plate. It was also disappointing because I'd ordered chicken tenders but received the chicken pie instead. While I'm wary of ordering in the future because the food is salty, my coworker loves it and we'll order again. Hopefully I can explore more of the menu and find the perfect dish and come back for a higher rating.

Between excellent service, from the host to the kitchen staff, and being a bright, cheery place decorated in a modern farmhouse feel (only complaint is the HARD seating), we love this place. The food is always delicious and seasoned perfectly with FLAVOR. For the appetizer, the Salad Pizza is absolutely scrumptious and was recommended by our server our first visit here last year. Honestly, it keeps bringing us back. The flavors are incredible. It has feta, mozzarella, topped with organic greens, shaved onions, tossed in a lemon/dijon dressing with shaved parmesan. It's a flavor bomb in the mouth. The meatloaf, is to die for. If you're a meatloaf eater this is for you. It's so tender and juicy and perfectly seasoned. Melts in your mouth and the sauce on top is the perfect blend of sweet and savory to top it off. For my two sides this time I chose the fried brussels sprouts and the greens. The greens are always seasoned perfectly and the brussels sprouts were crispy and full of flavor. They tasted even better dipped in my meatloaf sauce so that was a win-win. My boyfriend had the special which was short ribs. For his two sides, he had greens and green beans. The short rib was perfectly tender and absolutely delicious full of flavor and moist for him. The green beans and the greens were also perfect as well full of flavor, just enough fat and butter. It's a great little date spot or a family dinner. They also have outdoor seating covered with umbrellas. There's a bar inside with a TV if you choose to go watch sports and the food here is always on point full of flavor and makes you want to come back and try more things on the menu. You can't go wrong at southern roots.

Everything was delicious, although my partner wasn't a huge fan of the short ribs. The trout and salad were both excellent. The cheese dip was delicious. The sides were a standout, especially the Parmesan spaghetti squash, which I highly recommend. We had to put some extra salt on the sides, but that's purely personal preference. They also had several reasonably priced drink specials, which was a nice surprise. The service was amazing--friendly, attentive, and a big part of what made the meal so enjoyable. Overall, a really solid dining experience, and I'd definitely come back to try more of the menu.

For dinner, I had the filet, medium rare, and it was perfectly seasoned and cooked. That shouldn't make a restaurant stand out, but based on recent experiences, it was a delight. The street situation precluded a few spots downtown, and since we weren't in the mood for our go-to taco place, we decided to head out to the Family Diner. The walk-in was awkward on our part- cash register or hot bar line first? A sweet call from the kitchen of "Y'all's first time?" got us headed in the right direction. Full disclaimer: I've been nostalgic for the southern cafeteria lately. While talking to some food industry friends last week, we realized there is something powerful about the food we all remember from K and W. And while Family Diner doesn't have a giant dining room or a 5-snake velvet rope line to get to the counter, it does take me back. Here's how we made our choices: the hot bar was a choice of three types of chicken- the baked and fried were tempting until the gentleman serving us says: "We can fry you fish to order. Flounder, trout, and catfish." The chicken got skipped for a plate of flounder (plentiful plate, btw), and a side of the Mac and cheese and cooked cabbage. The kid sampled the catfish plate, same sides. Sweet tea. And yes ma'am, I'd like the cornbread. Done. We sat down at a table in the main, cozy dining room. The first thing that I noticed: this place is clean- tidy, even. There was a super polite young man moving around and busing tables, tidying up unassumingly and doing it in a way that is lacking in some finer dining places I've been in recently. The food came out, piping hot. I used one of the malt vinegar packets to douse my flounder (a cafeteria habit) and dug in. The first bite was light and flaky, cooked perfectly. Nothing greasy-tasting, at all, just clean. The sides were great- nothing over seasoned, and like cooking at home, there was room for you to season things to your taste. Well played, Family Diner. The owner (I think? She was the one who guided us down the right path when we walked in) came out to make sure that we were happy, and yes ma'am, it's great, and holy cow, you just dropped this cornbread into the skillet and fried it? Yes, we will be back. It's unassuming, and it's just what the doctor ordered. It's a cafeteria, but it's clean and polite and makes you feel good that you ate there. It's soul food, but not just from an ethnic standpoint- it makes me happy and full and feel welcome and I'll be back.

There are ways that the food could be packaged to preserve some of the heat. The meat should be wrapped in foil to keep the styrofoam box from making it soggy. It has been a Raleigh institution for nearly 30 years, serving breakfast and lunch with a focus on traditional Southern home cooking. It's a classic North Carolina country restaurant filled with regulars, simple furnishings, brick columns, ceiling fans, and happy diners enjoying long lunches. Restaurants like this are becoming increasingly rare. This restaurant is well known across North Carolina and much of the Southeast. I am always surprised by how many people throughout North Carolina, east and west, know of it and have eaten here. It has been featured on WRAL's Tar Heel Traveler series featuring Scott Mason. The inside reminds me of restaurants that were built in the 1970s and 1980s and simply never felt the need to modernize. The terrazzo-style floor, brick columns, vinyl chairs, and ceiling fans all contribute to an authentic, lived-in atmosphere. It feels like a place designed for regular customers who want to remain in a time of family-owned local restaurants with loyal employees who know many of their patrons by first name. Their menu is unique and includes all-day breakfast featuring hand-patted sausage, country ham, homemade biscuits, red-eye gravy, grits, pancakes, and omelets; daily lunch specials that, depending on the day, include fried chicken, barbecue chicken, meatloaf, fried catfish, country-style steak, hamburger steak, pork chops, fried seafood, and turkey with dressing and gravy. Fresh vegetables also change daily and often include collards, butter beans, cabbage, squash and onions, yams, cucumbers, black-eyed peas, and other Southern staples such as fried okra. Meals are served with biscuits and hush puppies, reinforcing the old-fashioned Southern diner experience. Today, I had roasted turkey with plenty of gravy over dressing. It came with cranberry sauce. You get two sides, and I had black-eyed peas and fried okra. The turkey was moist, and the gravy seemed homemade, covering the turkey as it rested on a bed of dressing. The fried okra had an even golden coating, and the black-eyed peas seemed slow-cooked and homemade. This is exactly what I've come to expect here. They always live up to their well-earned reputation as a place specializing in Southern comfort food. I drank a half-and-half mix of sweet and unsweetened iced tea. No need to ask for a refill; the pitchers of both are left on the table. But that doesn't mean you'll miss your waitress for very long; she'll check on you regularly. In other words, the service is every bit as good as the food, with plenty of old-fashioned Southern hospitality. Important things to consider when planning a trip: They only serve breakfast and lunch. They are open 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to noon on Saturday, and are closed Sunday and Monday. They accept cash and checks only--no credit cards, debit cards, Apple Pay, Venmo, or other electronic payment methods. The prices are reasonable enough that they won't break your wallet or checking account. There is an ATM on the premises for your convenience. I can't wait to go back. Great food, great service, great hospitality, and always a great experience.
