It's homestyle... depending on whose home you use as reference and who's cooking. Their food ranges from good to pukey. I got my first tiffin, 3 items tasted basically identical and crappy, called them to chat and there was no response. So I emailed them. No response. So I threw 3/5 dishes away and as you can imagine, wont be ordering from them ever again. On average, their food is not as good as packet food but more expensive. Really disappointed because while I didn't expect amazing food, I expected it to be edible and better than packet food. Though some people rate it 5 stars here so YMMV. read more

Recommended by a neighbor. Interesting concept, they deliver to your door a "tiffin" which includes a selection of dishes. We ordered the 4 dishes. I would have to say it's very hit or miss. The rice was skimpy, they forgot an item, and they did not answer their customer service email to address these issues. Some of the dishes were good (paneer tikka masala), while others were inedible (palak makkai). Will not be ordering from here again. read more

Decent homemade Indian food delivered right at your doorstep. The food is less oily, right level of spiciness and decent quantity. I have ordered a few times and it fulfils my objective of having home made meals. They deliver to Manhattan on Sundays and Wednesdays but pretty late at night. I have two issues with this service though.. 1) They offer 5 different veg dishes options every week of which atleast one is cream based and other is lentil.. limits the options for you to choose from if you have dairy and lentil allergies 2) Each dish is priced at approx 8 dollars. They charge 5 dollars as standard delivery charges on top of driver tip. Add taxes to that and you land up paying atleast 12-15 dollars extra. So it basically lands up being restaurant prices However overall definitely not a bad option for days on which you want to relieve yourself from cooking and still enjoy some home cooked indian meal. I just wish they could offer more than 5 dishes to pick from specially for people with allergies. read more

The food is homestyle cooking so it's pretty healthy. The food is delicious and its a great quantity for the price. All my friends that tried the food I ordered are hooked on it. You can order the food to your desired spice level. If you have limited time and can't cook, this is a great option with a variety of dishes. Definitely, try their Pav Bhaji and Rajma! Good 'home style' tiffin service for NY and NJ. They can deliver twice a week depending on your location and offer a couple of different package options. Food's pretty good if you want no-frills indian dishes for everyday meals. I've stored the food upto a week (chapattis in the freezer) and had no issues with it. I havent tried other services, but i quite like the online ordering system, quality of food and price, given that i dont have to worry about fixing a meal every evening. We have been ordering fro this place for a while. Food is not greasy, has low sodium and they deliver. Its like home cooked food but most dishes lack flavor. They also try to skim on ingredients. For example, the baingan bartha was cooked in a tomato base. WHen we called to inquire if we got the correct dish, we were told that they are trying out a variation of baingan bhartha. Of course, we didnt buy that. More recently we ordered baingan-aloo and this was full of potato. They dont take credit card but are quick to charge tax. When we confronted them, they agreed to take a check as payment. We might continue to use this service as a convenience but the food is nothing to brag about. read more

Honestly, the food is good but the customer service is terrible! I have ordered food from them for literally so many weeks now. The taste is ok but the quantity keeps decreasing every week!! It's unbelievable. It's like a game how they get customers and once the customer is fixed the quantity starts decreasing. For the price we pay, I don't appreciate a box half filled! First when I read these reviews I thought to myself oh I am getting a great quantity but clearly not. It was getting worse every week. I sent them pictures of the quantity and mentioned how it was not acceptable a few time but they didn't have the courtesy to reply to that email. But btw they reply in seconds if it is a money related matter. Sucks that people can be so money minded!! How far is a business going to get you when you all care about is money and not customer service? I can see how the other reviews are almost expressing the same concern. They are only a team of 2 (Prashant and his wife) but they act as if they are at team of 100 people. Every time I have called for something, they can never fix the situation on the point. Great idea and convenient if you don't have time to cook during the week. Food is tasty and they offer a good range of healthy options. The quantity in each sabzi pot is a bit light considering the total cost incl. tax and delivery charge. The delivery time for Manhattan on Monday is way too late. They say 6-10pm but the food was actually delivered well past 10pm. If they can't make Monday work at a reasonable time they shouldn't offer it as an option in the first place. read more

First the good - food was decent and non-greasy so it's not a bad tiffin service. Then the reasons for a two star - Firstly, the website says $43. But when it came time to pay, it was $46 (before tip) including $3 for tax. Yet they only accept cash and don't provide a bill. Means they not only cheat the Internal Revenue Service, but are fooling us as well. They don't pay any taxes! Secondly, it was very hard to reach them. Bombay Takeout is awesome. Their food is homemade and delicious. Every week is a different menu. The Rasoi Ghar is a good size for two people. Unlike the other reviews on this site, I have found their customer service to be excellent and responsive. The only thing to note is on the scheduled delivery day, the food comes on the later side (around 7-9 pm, at least where I live), but if you know to expect this it's not a problem. read more

I had been contemplating ordering this service for a while now since I've had amazing dabba experiences in Bombay years ago. This is nothing like the dabba waala service in Mumbai but it gets the job done- home Food, home delivered. I ordered the five vegetarian dishes (they change their menu every week or so which is refreshing). The serving size was decent. The delivery happened on time (in fact before time). However, they missed an item in the order. I emailed them and they promptly responded, apologized and delivered my missing item the very next day, along with extra rice and raita which I thought was a great gesture to back their great service. Very Impressed! Now the taste, like most reviewers state, the food is a little on the bland side lacking strong flavors; however, it's not swimming in oil and other overpowering ingredients. It definitely seems healthy and light and very basic. I really enjoyed the rajma and paneer. Not mind blowing flavors but they fill you up. Three stars for service and 2 stars for food taste. If they up their flavors, I'd be ordering all the time :) read more

I like the convenience of having a home cooked meal when I get back from work late at night. And it is true that the food I get from Bombay Takeout is not greasy. But it is very bland. Perhaps BLAND = HEALTHY? I agree that they have been skimping on ingredients. The dal we got last week was 50% non-dal. When storing in the fridge, a transparent jelly like substance floated to the top and filled half the container. Could have been corn meal, could have been something else. I am not sure. I have been using them for about 2 months now. But I am considering going back to cooking. There is nothing equivalent to a self-cooked meal I suppose where you have complete control on the ingredients. They don't give you a bill, so they aren't paying taxes for sure. However, they charge delivery fee of $5 and then tax and then I have to tip the guy too. This is a "meh" for me. Sigh, I guess I am done with trying to find shortcuts to eating well and eating right. read more

Since we had very little time to cook after having our first child, we started ordering from this place. We've been ordering for a couple of months now, but mostly out of compulsion. Yes, the food isn't oily, and is edible - but definitely not equivalent to a home-cooked meal like they claim. Like the other reviewers, I also found that they skimp on ingredients. There were barely any paneer pieces in Palak Paneer. Baingan bharta was all watery gravy with no traces of eggplant. Even the rajma was mostly gravy with very few beans. Considering that the cost of the food is comparable to that of restaurants, I was disappointed. This place would make sense for those desperate ones who really don't have a choice but chow down anything that's not super unhealthy. Oh, and they do charge five bucks for delivery! read more

Man oh man, what can I say about this place!? At first, I thought it'd be another one those tiffin places with oily, creamy and just plain old bland food! You know, the ones who preach freshness and healthiness; but turn out to be total hypocrites. What sucks is, I signed up for a monthly meal plan with one of those "tiffin places", I was so excited to get my delivery and the food was horrendous! I had already paid for the month, so I could not even cancel it..it was quite frustrating. So my friend tells me about this place, and it was sorta like "in one ear, out the other". One day, she brought it up again, and I decided to give the place a try. She told that I would be mesmerized by their website alone, let alone their food. She was damn right! The website takes one into a different world, and the selection is very eclectic. I placed an order through e-mail, and somebody responded immediately, the process was quite seamless. I ordered the karela, bhindi and panner makhani (I couldn't resist). Everything was great, fresh and delicious. The paneer wasn't as creamy as I expected it to be; in fact, it almost made me feel as though I was eating something very nutritious. The karela and bhindi was cooked just right, it tasted just like my mom's. The rotis and parathas are just too good to be true; all of the parathas are wonderful and they even made a paneer paratha at my request. After dinner, I sent an e-mail to them right away to thank them for the wonderful food and I got a free dish with my next order! I highly recommend the idli-sambhar, its sooooo good and its also very very cheap; I am now a regular with Bombay Takeout and ever since then, I have tried practically everything on the menu except the Italian stuff..Italian-Indian--that just doesn't sound right. I am seriously thinking about converting to Bombay Takeout-ism..if that's at all possible. But otherwise, the people are very kind, generous and friendly. The service is great and the food is very personal and customizable. With food like this, it's impossible for anyone to go wrong when ordering.
