I was looking forward to having a taste from home while I was working in Boston. The area is beautiful and the restaurant was easy to find in the basement. Their menu doesn't have sushi, but has Korean BBQ. I ordered the medium wings half spicy and half soy garlic. It was the normal wait time and the hostess was sweet and brought me water while I waited. The wings were a little dry and much smaller compared to the ones in NYC and VA. The coleslaw was mixed evenly and delicious. The radishes flavoring is consistent at each location, only there was a weird combination of sizes. There were some that were teeny tiny and some that took three bites to finish. I'm still a lover of BonChon and if there's one in the city I'm visiting, I'm eating there! read more

The chicken is SUPERB. I'd order it over and over. It's addictive, and if that's the only thing I had ordered, I'd be rating this place five stars. The ttoek bokki is the worst I have ever had. Ever. And I've eaten it from a Korean convenience store. I also have a good recipe of my own--come to think of it, these guys could probably use it. The buldak was, indeed, stir-fried, spicy, and peppery--and it was also smothered in CHEESE. I mean, really? Cheese? If I want spicy food with cheese, I go for Italian. It was awful. Had a pretty average-to-miserable experience here. They did not have AC on a very very hot day and I was unable to enjoy my meal to its fullest. The service was also awkward and I felt rushed. Take-out only for me! It was so hot that I think eating the spicy wings (my favorite) would have made me even more uncomfortable, so I ended up ordering soy garlic...not a big fan of the radish in such a hot temperature, either. Good food, I've been to multiple Korean restaurants in Seoul and these guys have good quality / flavor items in their menu. I did not like that they don't serve the Korean BBQ with Kimchi nor they serve it with lettuce or something similar (like they do in Korea). So you are not really getting the K-BBQ experience. The only reason I wont give 5 stars is because it seemed as though it was the first day of every single waiter there when i went....No one knew anything about the menu but that didn't stop me from eating. Can't believe they have bonchon in Cambridge. While the original bonchon only sells chicken this location sells all kinds of korean dishes. We shared soy garlic chicken, dduk boki, and seafood pancake. Although it wasn't the best korean food I had (dduk boki was a bit disappointing) it was overall good. I used to love Bon Chon when I lived in Boston, so when I came back to visit I decided to indulge. I ordered for delivery and after waiting over an hour, my food came COLD in all the wrong places and warm in the others. My chicken wings and dumplings we're both barely lukewarm - I literally had to microwave the chicken wings to make them tolerable and didn't even bother with the dumplings. My fries were so cold and soggy they tasted like your day old leftover fries. My coleslaw was also lukewarm, much to my demise, and lost all it's allure. And to top it all off - they can give me cold food but the soda is warm. Completely disappointed this chain has clearly gone downhill. Will not return. read more

I ordered a Galbi salad and codfish, shrimp tofu soup while my friends had 2 XL chicken bbq combo. For my part, the soup is a little bland, but definitely healthy. The galbi salad is delicious and has lots of meat. I was stuffed after eating those two. My friends ate the chicken half and half and said the spicy avor was a lot spicier than the one in Allston. Their faces all went red after eating the spicy wings. Also, I have to give this restaurant 5-star for service. We (11 people) asked the restaurant to split to bill into 11 but somehow in the end, the transaction was failed and they could only split the bill into 5. This caused us a problem since paying back would be very difficult. When I recalculated the amount and called the restaurant, the employee kindly explained the situation to me and said they didnt charge us tip since it's the restaurant's mistake. The fried chicken was very good; I can see now why they are known for this! I enjoyed it. I went with 2 other Korean friends. I am fairly experienced with Korean food, but it was still nice to have my Korean friends with me to guide my experience and give me advice. After the fried chicken, we all ordered different dishes. I ordered the Bulgogi bibimbap, another the seafood dinner platter, and another some Kimchi. The Bulgogi bibimbap was a little bland, but perhaps it was because it was juxtaposed next to the seafood platter which was exceptionally spicy and tasty. The seafood was all great, there was shrimp, calamari, octopus, clams, scallops, etc.. The taste was incredible. It was just spicy enough to take pause, and the flavor took it home. We also ordered a round of Takayoki as an appetizer, which is fried octopus inside of a dumpling. I also recommend this! OMG, worst pick-up experience ever !!!! I made two orders for pick up today. One is kimchi soup & spicy japchae the other is wings & kimchi soup. I walked 20 minutes to take these home and found only 25% of my order was right!!!! The japchae was missing, and there were sth weird in our soup as well - i thought it was tofu in bad condition, but it turned out to be sth disgusting and unknown... I decided to try this place out because I was visiting the area and because I wanted to experience Korean chicken wings. I ordered the hot wings believing that they were only going to be hot, but when they arrived, it was smothered in a honey glaze. I don't eat sweet meats, so I asked the waiter if I could get anything else that wasn't sweet and he told me "no, we will not be able to replace it on the bill." So, I was stuck with food I did not want. After I was told that by the waiter, I had to hunt down any staff member to get the check and leave. The service was terrible and there was not a manager on duty either when I asked. I was told by the staff that "the Korean costumers like the food," but I'm not a frequent Korean-food eater nor am I Korean, so it was just plain insulting. Worst. Experience. Ever. Ordered delivery last night. It never showed up. We ordered at 8:02 PM. Estimated delivery was 9:20-9:30. We pre-paid on the app. A little before 9 we received a call from GrubHub (not BonChon) saying the driver had been trying to contact us and was waiting outside the door, and would wait for a few minutes. We opened the door and no one was there. We then called BonChon who told us the driver had waited for us for "over an hour" which is a total lie bc we hadn't even ordered a full hour before. I guess an old phone number was listed for the order (yet somehow GrubHub was able to contact us... so I don't get that). Instead of beeping or you know, ringing the door bell like any competent delivery driver would, this person just called GrubHub, did not wait at all, and left with our food. Based on the time we ordered and were contacted by GrubHub and estimating cooking time and travel i would imagine they waited about 2 minutes before leaving. The manager at Bonchon was yelling at my gf so loudly when she called that I could hear it from the next room. They told us we didn't deserve a refund and if we wanted the food so bad they would "leave it at a church" nearby. (But apparently leaving it on the front stoop was not an option when the driver was supposedly there) So we got no food, and it looks like we will be receiving no refund from BonChon. BonChon, you should be ashamed of yourselves. I realize that we had an incorrect number listed but the driver did not make any effort to get us this food when we were clearly home sitting inside. RING THE DOORBELL.The manager or whoever my gf spoke to was extremely rude, and clearly incompetent as a manager if that is how he treats customers. Thanks for robbing us BonChon! Will make sure to tell everyone I know about this. Don't worry, we called Domino's. They were there in 30 minutes and RANG THE DOORBELL. You crooks at BonChon need to learn how to run a business. Pretty much your typical bonchon. I mainly just came for the korean friend chicken. For those who have never come, there is some decent kick to the spicy wings. Wings are definitely worth trying if you've never had them. Main knock is that you walk into a dingy building and go down some sketch stairs before you're seated in the basement. Service was really great though. Good with refilling water and waiter was very accommodating! Just not enough to make up for the overall meh experience. This location has really gone downhill. It used to be really good. Now I probably wouldn't come back. Negatives within the last 6 months: Price increase on the chicken, which is really the only good thing to get. Chicken pieces seem smaller as others have noted. They used to give you kimchee and peanuts with your order. Those disappeared. There used to be nice touches with the chicken -- a basket to put the bones in, wet naps to wipe your fingers. These also have disappeared. Prepare to lick your fingers clean. I came here with a friend a few days ago and should have turned right around -- the reception area smelled like a massive amount of dishwashers water or sewage had spilled and was being air dried instead of mopped...just a nasty smell. No idea what happened to you Bonchon. At $1 a wing, you should be raking in money, but you're screwing it up. I'll find a different wing place going forward. read more

I have utilized this restaurant for both takeout and dine in the services. Dining in is OK. Similar to what other commenters have written the grills do not work, there is a limited drink selection, and the cleanliness of the establishment is questionable. I say this in reference to the bathroom which is dimly lit and the kitchen area which is exposed when walking to the bathroom. Additionally the waiting area outside is also sketchy, The restaurant is located in the basement of the building which has been under construction for years now. However I like Bonchon chicken. I have still patronized this establishment via takeout. Sometimes the wait is 10 minutes others, it is 20. For the most part I haven't enjoyed all of the take-out meals I have received. The only issues are sporadic; sometimes the chicken wings are tiny i.e small flat or drums. Other times the fried rice, I get the chicken fried rice, is Occasionally burned. Over all 75% of the time this is a good bet for take out. read more

5/2/2020 I ordered X-large chicken online through Grubhub for pick up and it wasn't ready until 2hrs later. I got their 40mins after I ordered online and waited 1.5hr for it. The host kept on saying its coming out and just wait a little longer. As I waited it was frustrating seeing people doing in-person order and got their order first than me. No one want to wait it the narrow hallway with the COVID-19 going around. It also they looks like they prioritized delivery orders than customer pick up orders. They really need to fix how they take orders. This will be my last time I prepaid for the meal online for BonChon. This isn't Bonchon. Trekked out from Western MA to Boston the other day to eat at Bonchon Allston, but they were closed for maintenance or something. We were surprised to find out there was a Harvard Square location! Oh wow! Well, the location is in this gross, very cold basement. We were greeted by a stoic woman whose face was like "why are you here." We were seated and waited for 20 minutes for someone to come to our table, even though the place wasn't very busy. As opposed to nice, warm atmosphere of the main location, this one was obviously more for late night college outings. Everything was kind of beat up-looking. No music on in the background. Just kind of a bleak place. My female companion went to the bathroom and it looked like a maintenance closet, with a paper towel dispenser duct taped to the wall. The menu is roughly the exact same thing as the Boston one, but sans sushi, to the disappointment of others with me who were really hellbent on it. So we ordered some half-and-half chicken strips. A medium order of strips at the Boston location is enormous, with each piece of chicken almost hand-sized, and very crispy and absolutely delicious. We were ready. What we got were these dinky little Chicken McNuggets basted with what tasted like some off-the-shelf sauce. For the same price as Boston's giant plate of crispy, delicious dead bird. It was the most disappointing thing. This sucked. It's better than some other late night options in the area, maybe, but never go here when you could go to the main location instead. read more

It was my first time trying Korean chicken and I'm so glad I did! My friend insisted to take me here after learning that I still haven't checked this place out. After that, I found myself in Bon Chon more often that I ever imagined myself to be. I usually get take out and they charge about $3 so that's an added cost. Whatever, I always crave for their stuff anyway. Their double fried chicken is a MUST try - so crispy, tender, tasty and juicy! What more can you ask for? My favorite is the classic soy and garlic chicken. You can never go wrong with it. It really is like no other! I have yet to try their other options because I honestly just always get the chicken. The Harvard location is perfect, although it's easy to miss because it's not right in the square. Got the fried chicken combo with half spicy and half soy garlic. YUMMY. I don't know how you can argue with Korean fried chicken. Oh, if you can't handle spice too well, make sure you bring a gallon of milk with you - that shit is HOT. I even got asked why I was so sad because I had started to tear up. My response, amidst bountiful and boogerful nose honks into my poor napkin: "I'b so habby because dis chickedn is delicious bud id is so damb sbicy gahhhhh." Prices are decent - a combo with 15 pc (10 wings, 5 drumsticks) is $18.95. They also have a standard Korean menu with BBQ, soups, bibimbap, noodle dishes, and all that jazz. Service was awesome; our waiter was super cool and accommodating. Did I come here for jerky or did I come here for chicken?? Maybe I came on a bad day, but the half soy half spicy wing combo I got was a huge disappointment. The spice was there, but all the wings were overly fried - the chicken meat was incredibly dry and jerky like! With that said, the apps and entrees I sampled from my cousins' plates were good (one was an app containing octopus) and they have sparkling matcha green tea that's quite delicious ($5). Kimchi fried rice isn't bad, a bit greasy but I'm sure would definitely be a good accompaniment for bulgogi. Might be a good idea to order a little at a time in case the chicken's not good that day. My friend and I went there to have dinner today, and we had an okay dining experience. But while we were waiting for them to bring us a check, we spotted a roach crawling on the wall. When a waitress passed by, I showed her the roach, and the manager quickly came over to say that she's sorry and asked *whether* we'd like a 50% discount. She explained that they have recently discovered this problem, and while we're not the first ones to spot roaches here, they've been trying to address this issue. I was so shocked that they'd continued to serve food fully knowing that the restaurant had been infested with roaches. I told the manager that I want a full refund. She responded that since we saw the roach after we had eaten everything, we are only eligible for a 50% discount. I complained that it's not the money that's the issue, it's the fact that they are perfectly okay with serving food knowing that the restaurant had been infested, and since money is the only way they can compensate my displeasure, they should do so. The manager explains "you probably don't know how restaurants operate, but all restaurants have roaches, it's just that you were unlucky that you saw one today." I told her that their service is unacceptable because it's unsanitary, and after arguing for a while, she begrudgingly refunded the whole amount. While she was processing the transaction, the other cashier says that it's not their fault that we spotted a roach, as much as it is not their fault that roaches are in their restaurant. When I continued to complain to the manager how disgusted I was by the whole dining experience, she said "I made you happy now by refunding the full amount, what more do you want? If you're still so angry, you can just email my boss and tell him to close down the business until all the roaches are gone." Perhaps Bonchon Harvard Sq should consider closing down forever for the sake of customers' health. A restaurant that is not even willing to admit their problem shouldn't exist, especially when it concerns the food sanitation. I'm never going back to this place again. read more

Ugh. I so badly wanted to give this place a 5. And had it been based on food alone, I most definitely would have. But the service for my younger brother and myself was extremely sub par. Now it was my first time to Bon Chon, after one of my coworkers have been raving about the fried chicken to me almost daily for the past month. We went down into the basement of this Harvard square building, and were sat immediately. When our server came over, I informed him that this was our first time to Bon Chon, thinking that it would hint we need a little bit more description of the menu. That did not happen. We ordered quickly, knowing that I wanted that fried chicken. We got some edamame to start, the medium size combo (10 wings, 5 drums) and the Angus short rib to do the self serve BBQ in the center of the table. First thing brought to our table, well I don't know. My server didn't tell us. Funky smelling little white cubes, and a shredded salad of some sorts. After witnessing our tables around us eating these (wasn't sure if they were part of the BBQ components or what not because of no explanation) I decided to try some. The white cubes were pickled radish, which were delish but could only eat a couple cubes before becoming overwhelmed. The other was some sort of spicy onion salad, ok but I'm not the biggest fan of onions. Next came the edamame. They were ok. Served at a luke warm temperature (I like the first couple to be so hot that it hurts my face) and wasn't salted (little to none). Blah is really all I can say. I make it better myself. Then the chicken!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Homerun! Grand slam, best chicken o my life. They are double fried so the chicken is so crispy and amazingly delicious. We ordered the hot sauce and it was so good, but the double fried also left this caramel taste to the chicken. Just incredible. I am drooling just thinking about it. So excited for the 5 leftover pieces I will be having for dinner tonight. The drums are HUMONGOUS! Please order the combo, you won't regret it. The little wings are just as good, but there is something deliciously barbaric about the size of their drums that just made me love them. My brother and I both really liked the Korean BBQ. He really enjoyed cooking his own meat tableside, and I really liked to see him try to use chopsticks. We were both equally entertained. The angus rib eye was so tender and tasty, and we cooked it to a beautiful medium rare. And this was accompanied with three sauces, but of course was not explained to us at all from our server. We tried all three and enjoyed each of them, my brother preferring the sweet one in the center. So I am not sure if our server was afraid of my younger brother (6 foot, 250 pounds) or what, but he paid little to no attention to us, while being extremely attentive to all the other patrons in the restaurants. Standing and having conversations with them, constantly refilling their waters when half full. Our waters were empty and I tried waving him down several times to refill them. Literally had to get out of my seat and ask him to refill our waters that have been empty for ten minutes. Thank you. Our server's name was Kihyun K. Were we being treated different because we were the only non-Asians in the restaurants? I certainly hope that wasn't the case, but he was visiting each table at least 3 times more than he came over to our table. It was extremely frustrating. Not only were we thirsty our entire meal (the chicken is spicy!), but when I wanted to get my food wrapped up I had to get out of my seat (again) to ask him, although he was so diligent about getting other table's food together. I would most definitely go to Bon Chon again. That fried chicken is now something I cannot stop thinking about. But I will try the Allston location, and hope their service is more sound. read more

I've heard about Bon Chan forever!! First time I heard was a PBS show about Korean food, the KimChi Chronicle. Before I was able to go to a Bon Chan, I had the chance to go to a non-chain Korean fried chicken place in Queens NY, and it was a very yummy place! We've long heard about the Allston Bon Chan, but didn't want to drive all the way into Boston. We were excited to hear about this one in Harvard sq. The experience itself was a bit puzzling. First, it's in a basement. Before you get to the restaurant, the building first floor and the stairs leading down to the restaurant was incredibly stinky. It reminded me of Chinatown back in the 90s. We were hoping the restaurant doesn't get stink up by this, and fortunately once you walk into the restaurant it didn't stink. We went at an odd hour in the afternoon on a Sunday, it was quite empty, no wait. Since it's only my husband and I, we could only order so much. First off, has to be the fried chicken and we prefer the wings; half soy sauce half spicy. We also ordered the nengmyung spicy korean cold buckwheat noodle. The side dishes that came for the fried chicken wing are just two- cubed pickled radish, and coleslaw. The pickled radish is light and crunchy, very refreshing. I didn't like the coleslaw as much, it was drenched in the sauce, too much pepper and not enough salt. My husband liked it though. The fried chicken wing came and we were please to find it incredibly crunchy, almost like eating chips. The soy garlic is not as strong as the other one we went to in Queens NY... which I prefer, with stronger garlic flavor. But we did notice that right when it came it was not too hot to handle, which is a little bit strange, usually if we order fried chicken wrings it's usually very hot the first few minutes. I don't know if they meant to let it sit in the kitchen a few minutes to be cool enough to handle, or why it's not super hot.... But of course it's hot enough that it's doesn't feel unfresh or anything. In fact I was glad to find that the chicken bones come out pretty white, which indicates that the chicken is fresh. Personally I never liked how American way of making fried wings are always drenched in a puddle of sauce, so I love the fact that they brush on the sauce so there is just the right amount and nothing is dripping, I do still like to taste the chicken, too. On to the noodle. The red chili paste in this one is not nearly as hot as some other placed I've had the same dish. But very delightful, the spicy and the cold really balance out each other. They did also leave a small bowl of cold noodle broth in case if it's too hot, but we didn't need the broth, but the broth was very light, no oil, taste absolutely light and delightful, we love it anyway. All the ingredients in the noodle are very nicely mixed together, the radish, the meats, and cucumber, all good. On to what's not so good.... The reason why I gave it a 3 stars is because first, no wet naps for eating fried chicken with hands.... But that's just a small thing. The biggest upset is the Bathroom, it looked filthy to me. There was liquid all over the floor, all over! Wearing the flip flop it was hard not to tread some water onto the toes, and I felt super disgusting, I had to wash my toes a bit, who knows what all that liquid is! The paper towel machine was not loaded, the paper towel roll was on the toilet tank. That means everyone has to put their hands all over it trying to rip off a piece, not sanitary. All the point of contact, the handles, the flusher, the door nob, the faucet, the soap dispenser all has a layer of dirty oily streak on them. I used paper towel to touch everything I need to touch, it was really gross. When I was waiting to use the bathroom, I looked into the kitchen, and I must say, it was not well lit in the kitchen, and things I saw laying around were not very clean.... actually looked dirty. All that said, that night went home, I had a tummy ache all night....!! :( The last thing not so good, was the price, things are very expensive. For the two dishes it was amost $40!! I placed my online order for deliveryfrom this place via delivery.com. I was hungry, did not have the time for a take out. Yelp said that don't deliver Herr but delivery.com said they did. The order went through. 30 mins later the restaurant calls telling me that although they do deliver to my zipcode, the driver says it's too far and they need to cancel my order. When I contacted they gave me the most ridiculous excuse that not many people order from area. Clearly the agent was clueless because this restaurant has delivered to me in this area multiple times in the last years. I have just moved to other side of the street and now it's suddenly off limits? When I realised that's pointless to explain I gave up. My point is, I am ok with my area being outside of delivery range. What I am NOT OK with is my order being processed and then someone calling and telling me that it's out of range. Fix your delivery options and fix your customer service. Both sucks. read more

Just went here. The food was standard for bonchon, but the location. Oh my. The restaurant has no windows, no AC, and only 1 fan. We walked in and were ignored by the wait staff. When we were seated, it took the staff 15 minutes before we were acknowledged to place our order. Note: there was only ONE other table in the entire restaurant. I highly recommend that the owner fire all of his wait staff. They were mostly found chit chatting in the front of the restaurant, not doing their jobs. One waitress even looked at me as I was trying to flag her down for water, but just glared at me instead of coming for assistance. This is a perfect example of how NOT to do business. read more
