I am excited that Des Moines is getting a Bonchon. Finally we have other Korean chickens here, but this one is the closest to me. Overall, the chicken wings are really good and crispy. The bao buns were OK. I was expecting more flavor. The food took a little bit longer than expected, especially since there was no one waiting.

Fast service! Clean inside area for dining. Portions are awesome. Pricing very fair. Idk why it wasn't more busy...this place is great. The chicken sandwich w/ spicy sauce was fire!

Five chicken strips with side of coleslaw.

First time at Bonchon. I got the five chicken strips that comes with a side of coleslaw or pickled radish. I chose coleslaw and tried soy garlic and Korean bbq for my sauces. I was worried at first that I wouldn't have enough food as my chicken strips looked pretty small, but the chicken was hot and fresh when it came out and very crunchy. The coleslaw was good. Typical coleslaw. It's just enough different than Basic Bird that I'm glad I tried it. Next time I might add an extra side. Service was good. The restaurant is pretty small so be aware. I would go back.

We haven't gotten her further down the rabbit hole just yet. Lol Mandarin Grill & Sushi Bar is located in a small strip pretty much across 128th from the Walgreens there on University. Parking is mainly in a small lot in front of the restaurant with additional parking nearby. Seating is a combination of tables and chairs and booths. As always we were greeted right away when we walked in and seated immediately. Our drink orders were taken a minute or two later and we were given time to look over the menu. I've never had a bad experience here! The food and service is ALWAYS on point! We ordered the following: 1x Firecracker roll (Right) - Cream cheese, kani, jalapeno, cilantro on the inside. Tempura battered and fried. Spicy mayo, crunchies, unagi sauce and spicy tuna on the outside. 1x Unicorn roll (Left) - Tempura shrimp and avocado on the inside. Spicy tuna, soy paper, raspberry and a house sauce on the outside 1x Shrimp tempura roll (middle) The sushi rolls hit the table after a short wait. We both loved the Firecracker roll! The Unicorn roll was very good too. I don't think I've ever had a raspberry sauce on a sushi roll before... Nice! I was strangely impressed by the shrimp tempura roll... While this is a basic standard roll at most places the shrimp was more heavily breaded... The crunch factor on this one was fantastic! It's that contrasting texture thing I guess... If you're not into sushi the other menu items here are great too! The menu is extensive and covers a lot of items we normally associate with Chinese food along with Korean dishes as well. If you haven't been here it's worth the stop! If you just haven't been here in a minute... It's time to go back! Pro-tip. I have two soups I consider kryptonite to a cold. One is Brenda's Spicy Noodle soup at the Vietnam Cafe in Merle Hay Mall... The other is here! Their Hot & Sour soup with shrimp. Add rice, a side of kimchi and extra chiles. I think there's a truck there with them most Wednesday nights... I've been waiting for a chance to try these guys. It was one of the trucks high on my want list. Tonight I swept the middle row of their menu. Spicy pork (comes with rice and kimchi), a chicken bulgogi sandwich, and three egg rolls. $24 total before tip. I LOVED the spicy pork... I threw the pork, the rice, and the kimchi altogether almost immediately. This should be the new holy trinity. The egg rolls were very good. The wrap had a nice crunch and the filling tasted great. Cooked perfectly. The chicken bulgogi sandwich... It was okay. It was really overshadowed by the other two items. The chicken was tender and well cooked. The flavors popped. The roll reminded me of a lot of banh mi rolls I've had in the past. I really enjoyed the roll... Kind of like the exterior of the egg rolls it brought a change of texture to the party after the spicy pork. The staff of this truck was amazing to deal with. Everyone seemed to be in a good mood. The flow went well from ordering to picking up. The food was well packaged. The wait wasn't long at all. I'm glad I was finally able to catch up with this crew. I'll be watching the Sook's Korean Kitchen and Ashworth Snow's Facebook pages. Maybe sweep another row of menu items. And if want a spectacular cold treat hit up Ashworth Snow for a Dreamsicle stuffed with vanilla ice cream... We tried every side today because my in laws were visiting who havent had much Korean food and were not sure what they would like. And a little of each sauce. The black garlic was my fav but its very thick so not a great texture for everyone; not overwhelmingly garlic. The lava egg was delicious, very spicy especially with the little red pepper slices. I eat a lot of spicy food and it still gave me hiccups, but not so spicy I was sweating or tearing up. A healthy pang of spice but not a complex flavor and it disappears pretty quick from the mouth. The double dunk everyone liked very good texture good mix of sweet and spicy. The sweet butter one we got the kids was good not spicy at all but extra sticky. I liked it but preferred the double dunk. The asian bbq I really disliked but everyone else liked it; it was very strong saltiness and sweet. MiL ordered the pork ribs which were fine, a little tough but good flavor. The kids wanted fries so we added some on but they tasted a little stale and the spice mix on them wasnt popular they were barely eaten. The cucumber kimchi is just the cabbage with cucumber added! We got both and I was like oop. It was a little dry and not very strong to me. The sweet potato was disgusting nobody liked it. VERY strong salty muso flavor overpowering, very soft mushy sweet potato. We threw it out. The egg salad the kids loved and it was a good flavor, pretty crowded pleasing. LOVED the daikon perfect flavor texture etc. A nice snap just a bit sour. The mac was popular with the kids, I did not like the extra thick cheesy sauce personally. LOVED the spinach side dish what a surprise! Very refreshing and well cooked, a bit of sourness but not too much.

We started with the dumplings, and they were outstanding--crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and packed with flavor. They were the perfect way to start the meal. The beef was incredibly tender, practically falling apart with every bite, and every ingredient came together perfectly. My wife ordered the Miso Ramen and couldn't stop talking about how flavorful and comforting it was. Every spoonful tasted fresh and thoughtfully prepared. The atmosphere was another highlight. The restaurant has a beautiful, open layout with warm lighting, Japanese-inspired décor, and a welcoming vibe that makes you want to stay and enjoy your meal. It feels modern while still being cozy. To top it all off, the service was phenomenal. Our server was attentive, friendly, and made sure we had everything we needed without ever feeling intrusive. Hokkaido delivered on every level--food, atmosphere, and service. We'll definitely be back, and if you're in the Ankeny area and craving ramen, this is a place you need to experience.
