Tasty chicken, but take-out wasn't located until a recheck found it 'waiting' by the cashier...

My (heartbreakingly adorable) grandchildren* are half Korean, but neither they or their mother have had any experience with her country of origin. I'm thrilled that Bonchon is here - the food is delicious and also a wonderful place to introduce them to Korean cuisine when they visit. The long, brick wallpapered room is lined with attractive pictures of their food, which the menu also showed - a nice touch for kids, non-readers and those new to Korean food. The pre-happy hour special drink selection had wine and unusual craft beer for $4 and $5. Their golden crusted and large fried chicken legs were marvelously crunchy and with a moist interior. My japchae was unbelievably tasty; the glass noodles had been cooked with beef and vegetables that created the perfect trifecta of deliciousness, smoothness and crunch. Spiced french fries looked as good as they tasted, and the regular kimchee pieces served as a side is nicely sweet and sour, but if your not an aficionado of hot-hot-hot (which I'm not) then watch out for the kimchee slaw - wowza. Worst service anywhere. Asked for sauce on the side because my kids don't all like the same thing. Seems like a simple request for wings. I was told that they can't put sauce on the side. Then I asked I I could get sauce on half the order and was rudely told no, as if I was really putting the guy out. Fortunately, I remembered that Garden Catering was 2.5 miles away and 10X better. Plus, they put the sauce on the side. I guess there is a reason that Bonchon is almost always empty and Garden Catering is always slammed. I recently visited the location in New Haven and was crossing my fingers that this new Fairfield location would at least be as good. No disappointment here, first thing I have to say is the the manager (and/or) owner Leo was so welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable. I came here with my friend who is half Korean and grew up eating her Grandmother's versions of everything on the menu (btw this is now her favorite spot). They made a cultural connection, having a lengthy discussion about Korean food which was great to listen to. The Japchae, Potstickers and Wings were spot on. We also had the Takoyaki which wasn't for me but I can't say there was anything particularly wrong with it. I will definitely be back! read more

I had an opportunity to try this place and it did not disappoint! I was hesitant at first but having a friend with me who had tried it previously, gave us the idea of trying different things and the food was delicious! From the fried chicken that was fresh and crispy and spicy to the Dumplings which were very juicy and fresh. We also tried the spicy chicken tacos and those were so delectable! They gave you so much meat and it was not dry wrap was soft and I can't say enough about how good the food was. We had the size of the fried rice, The glass noodles which I can't remember the name of and one other thing. What I can say though is the staff was very friendly, welcoming and they made you feel like they wanted to serve you. Great job Bon Chon, I will be back! read more

I came here twice so far and have really enjoyed the food here. The first time I ordered the bulgogi sliders and they were SO GOOD. I ordered the bulgogi fried rice and it was yummy but I wish there was a cheaper option for just bulgogi and rice like the chicken katsu. My friends had the chicken katsu and thought it was delicious. We also got gyoza - the spicy one is no joke though. I am a like spicy foods but be prepared for some serious heat! The service is friendly and it is a very nice place. Parking is mostly on the street but there is a parking structure nearby right behind the Fairfield U bookstore. Definitely come on by and try this place out. It is a great addition to the Fairfield area. read more

Loved this spot!! I got an alert (based on my food preferenced - thanks, Yelp!!) to check out this new spot in Fairfield and took the opportunity to hit Sunday brunch. Wasn't exactly sure what to expect, as I haven't been to any of the other locations... but, we were more than pleasantly surprised! The Korean fried chicken is ON POINT... and they have options for all (bone-in, boneless, spicy, sweet, mild, etc...). Aside from the delish chicken we tried several other things: - Popcorn shrimp: delicious, perfectly cooked, and the aioli/house dipping sauce had just the right amount of heat - Fried octopus dumplings: flavor was great, texture was not for me! - Tacos: both the bulgogi and chicken were just right - with the slaw & sauce, delicious! - Udon noodle soup: large portion (couldn't finish it all) and very, very good - right amount of spice, lots of noodles, and the bulgogi was just right - Chicken wrap: nothing special, but still very good! We'll be back to try (among other things) the Salmon Avocado roll, the dumplings/shumai, and the fried rice/glass noodle dishes! read more

I came here recently, not happy about the service. First of all the location seemed closed but I guess their lights were on too low. The food came out, the chicken nuggets were so hard that my daughter couldn't eat them. She ended up eating my drums.. which she never does. Everything was too greasy.. They finally opened! Been waiting for this to open since the New Haven branch told me that they're opening one closer to my location. Just as expected, the chicken was delicious and crispy to perfection! Tried other dishes as well and they're just as good. Pros: great service, friendly staff, very clean. The menu is easy to read and the pictures on the menu were very helpful. Cons: boneless fried chicken. I would come back for the chicken wings or drumsticks, but wouldn't order boneless again. Unfortunately, this was the only thing I ordered so I can't say anything else about the other food items. I ordered half spicy and half crunch. They tasted good.. but wish there was more sauce on them. I also believe boneless is chicken breast and not chicken thigh.. so it's a bit drier. Not a complaint, but a note/tip for other patrons The waitress said they normally don't bring out sauces on the side to dip when I requested some, but next time if I wanted it saucier, to ask for it to come out more saucy and they will happily do it for me. Totally understandable.. lesson learn for next time. Reason for only 3 stars is because I had a terrible stomach ache that night. I brought home leftovers and I thought maybe my stomach ache was just a fluke and that I prob just ate too much chicken.. Nope. The stomachache happened again after eating my leftovers though less severe. Tip: park on the street or behind the bookstore and walk through. OMG! They're open! Just ordered takeout and so excited! Waiting for months and glad they landed in Fairfield. I ordered wings half and half, bibimbap, more to come as soon as we eat this! So the wings were crispy and super tasty - got spicy and soy garlic - even after getting them home and not eating them for at least another 10 minutes. Finger lickin' gooooood! Potstickers were very good, crispy skin and generous meat filling, their sauce made them even better. As for the Bulgogi sliders, the beef was tender, sorta like sandwich steak but more elevated ribeye with this traditional Korean sauce. Sesame ginger salad was a generous take out portion, you can just have that for a light meal. We couldn't finish the tofu bibimbap so had it the next day - need another pack of bibimbap sauce, we were given to only one and the portion is large, lots of white rice that needs the sauce. Went back for dinner one night and our server was quite engaging and attentive - I think he might double as the bartender and recommended a terrific Blue Point Oktoberfest beer, it paired soooooo well with the wings!!! The Takoyaki - fried octopus dumplings, are interesting at best, not my favorite but they were tasty nonetheless. Then I went for lunch one day and tried the 9 piece boneless wings lunch, this time half spicy and half sweet crunch. Not thrilled about the sweet crunch but ate it all alternating with my favorite spicy ones and made it through. But, I do think the kids would love the sweet crunch. Got a lot of protein for lunch, along with the refreshing pickled radish side - quite a generous portion for a side. As you can tell, since my first time during the soft opening period, have already eaten Bonchon chicken a few times, not counting what my daughter brings home for us to munch on. Will definitely be back frequently and hope they'll be successful in Fairfield for the long haul. read more

I've been waiting to try this place ever since I heard about it and was happy there was a location in ct that newly opened up. Didn't unfortunately get the chicken as that what they're known for but the tteobokki was by far my favorite. The bibimbap felt as it lacked flavor but the udon noodle soup was super flavorful. Takoyaki felt a little overcooked undersauced but it's still good. Service was fast and friendly. The place is clean and there's free parking as well. All in all check em out. read more

This review is only on the ttebokki.....why I didn't try the chicken wings ‍ I don't know!! I wasn't really hungry but I was nearby and decided to grab one dish that I always wanted to try the ttebokki. I'm just not a fan of Gochujang. There's only a few that tastes good. If your a fan of Bibimbap than this dish could be for you. The portion was good and rice cakes were chewy which is good in this case. I Just found out about Bonchon while searching for something new and interesting to have for lunch. There's parking on the side of the building and the restaurant looked nice, tidy and clean. The girls that greeted me when I walked in were cheerful and friendly, and helped me narrow down my selection. This was my first go with Korean Fried Chicken or "KFC," not to be confused with a certain Colonel's southern style recipe. I ordered the 8-piece wing lunch special: half with soy garlic sauce and half with spicy sauce. The conclusion after scarfing down my food: those were some impressive wings! Even after a 10 min drive, the wings were still crunchy and crispy. I reckon they must be amazing when they're fresh out of the fryer! The flavors were great, with the sweet and savory wings complementing the spicy ones. The spicy wings provided a decent hit but I would like to see them add a more (cough) dangerous offering too. The wings come with a choice of sides. I went with the pickled radish which was tasty and cleansing. Bonchon has a lot of other options on the menu including some Korean (duh) and Japanese favorites. Delicious food. Wings, potstickers, seasoned fries, chicken sliders, bulgogi tacos,coleslaw and pickled radish. Just an FYI, the leftover crispy chicken travels well. It stores well in fridge and is great reheated in the toaster oven. See photos. Spicy sauce means spicy but not killer- yes! Nice outdoor tables, clean restroom. Bonchon fried chicken is marinated with nothing. My husband who is picky, loved it. So if you're looking for a saltless, flavorless chicken with really saltless and flavorless skin, this place is for you. We had so much leftover the next day, so I air-fried it and stir fried it w frank's red hot and butter. So much better. But the meat was so bland. The japchae was so overcooked, there was no bite to the noodle. The kimchi is excellent. Best I've tried, so if I come back to this place it will be for that and only that. read more

For those people that live in Connecticut, I am so envy of you. I love Bonchon! We do not have Bonchon around where we live. You guys have several Bonchons in CT. We were passing by this town and searched Yelp and resulting in ordering take out from this restaurant. We had to start eating in the car as we were starving. The chicken and seasoned fries were to die for. Crunchy on the outside and moist on the inside. The fries were tasty. We took the food home and the kids love them as well. Fantastic fried chicken ... best KFC in town (and CT). Crispy, flavorful ... an extravaganza for your taste buds. Definitely more of a soy garlic drumsticks with a side order of white rice kind of fan ... but you have additional options of spicy and sweet crunchy (soy garlic is my personal favorite). There's also wings, tenders and boneless wings ... and combination if you want wings/drumsticks. Tried it today . The food is excellent , the flavors are perfect I had the 8 piece tenders , half soy garlic and half spicy . The spice was just right , not to hot My only complaint was my order was ready when I got there but the gentlemen manning the register told me it wasn't , I waited 10 minutes for my food that was already cooked and waiting for me Anyway once they work out these kinks I'm sure I will change this to a 5 star review read more

I visited the restaurant as my daughter and I are big fans of Korean style fried chicken wings served at traditional Korean restaurants. Bonchon offers several variations of fried chicken (wings only, drums only, strips). We ordered boneless wings with half soy garlic and half sweet crunch for sauce. If you prefer spicy, suggest you first ask the waiter to describe the heat level as everyone has different tolerance levels for heat. Our chicken also came with pickled radish which offers a nice balance. The chicken was moist and tender, and was not drowning in sauce so the coating remained crunchy. We also ordered bibimbap and bull dak. The bibimbap arrives in a superhot clay bowl but the rice was still soft on the bottom. If you're a fan of crunchy rice then you ask they heat the bowl a bit longer. Our other entree was the bull dak (spicy chicken, rice cakes, onions in hot sauce). This is a spicy dish heat level wise, but was tolerable as it didn't numb my taste buds. My only minor complaint with this dish is the accompanying bowl of white rice was very dry, so I mixed it up with some sauce from the bull bak. Bonchon is a nice addition to the downtown Fairfield restaurant scene as it serves both traditional Korean dishes and non traditional dishes. The staff are very polite and attentive, and the table layout is spacious so you won't feel cramped. We will be returning in the future. read more

So excited to hear About bonchon opening in CT! Finally! Sitting and dining area is in the front and the bar is all the way in the back, making it family dining friendly. Food: yumm! So you can choose from 3 different flavors: My favorite was soy garlic, but others said it was a bit salty. We also ordered sweet crunch-you taste some fish sauce flavor but sweet. That was good too. The other flavor we didn't order was spicy. When ordering combo, you only can pick 2 out of 3 flavors. We also had bulgogi tacos- yumm! And ddukbokki, tasty but warning you! Spicy!! Their fries were soooo good. I recommend you ask for korean style pickled relish over slaw. Service: it was decent. Funny to watch how there were about 4 male staff walking around taking orders, passing beverages, taking checks. And there was this one lady who was running ( really running) in between the kitchen and the dining area serving food! She got me nervous to watch when she was carrying and speed walking with 2 heavy plates and stone pot for rice! She was the ONLY person bringing food to the whole dining area. Oh. And there was a male staff with a broom cleaning the floor while ppl were eating. Hmm. I wouldn't have like him coming near me creating all dust while I'm eating. Overall eating experience was fun and good. At the end - we asked for boxes for leftover. This guy came as we were unloading our food into these fancy paper boxes and taught us how to lock the top. Seriously. It was just those ordinary paper boxes with tops you slide one side into the other. Oh no, he had to come and say we were doing it wrong. He came dominating our table, ripped parts of the top and twisted it. In the process he also had dipped his fingers into the box. Eww. We thought it was hilarious! Just had dinner here and they are not serving bonchon style or level food. They gave us some grocery store chicken tenders and Chinese food grade chicken wings. Once we questioned the strips the manager said it's what they been provided by corporate. They said it was the new strips and they mix with the old strips. So we asked for the old and now they don't have them. So I guess it's our responsibility to know what's available in your restaurant. As we left the manager stuck to that lie that it was new strips. They do no serve Korean fried chicken. They hit us with an okie doke. Go to new haven or west Hartford. read more

Very poor service. The food is simple and safe. Pretty good. And I love how the menu has plenty of photos to make it easier to choose. However, I came in on a Monday night and the bartender was barely able to give us attention due to other customers. He needed help. On top of that he forgot to order our starters and when he finally checked in on us we ordered the seasoned fries and instead fried pickles came out. ‍. I have been to the one in New Haven multiple times the food was amazing... living in Stamford and hearing there's a location in Fairfield, I absolutely needed to try ... $86.00 later and we honestly should have just went to McDonald's. The chicken was not the same I got in NH to any degree. The fries were good. I don't even know the difference between their wings and the Tyson's frozen chicken. The chicken was definitely crunchy which helps stimulate some type of thing in your mental. I think I'm more disappointed because I've been to the New Haven location so many times that the difference is day and night total opposite. The bimbimbap-- very, very good. The boneless fried chicken pieces were too dried out -- a let down. We really enjoyed the bowls, though wish there were more protein portion. 5 stars for that. Zero stars for the customer service. Walked to the door for pick up in the heat wave and my 3 year old was dying of thirst, with his water bottle empty. Diners on the patio all had glasses of tap water. So I asked if he could please have some tap water. I was told 'no'.. That there were bottles of beverages I could purchase. I explained I had ordered online with my card and came for pick up without any cash on me. Because I left with $35 worth of food and after asking again for a small amount of tap water for my toddler, was told 'no'. Poor little guy kept saying, 'I can't believe they ran out of water' (didn't want him to know the truth- that someone could be so mean). Restaurant workers deserve tips for pick-up during this pandemic, but it really made me think this person did not deserve that generous tip on the online order. Went to Bonchon for lunch on Thursday. We had been there on several occasions and were satisfied. Food came within 10 minutes Of our seating. I Ordered chicken wings. The chicken I was served was lukewarm, soggy and the wings had one drumette and the rest were wing tips. It was flavorless and had been sitting around. If the Korean chicken is a specialty, it should come to the table hot and crispy. I complained to the waitress who relayed my disappointment to the cook and was not offered an apology but a lame excuse. If you are "famous" for your fried chicken, it should be "top notch".
