Not sure why the ratings are so low, thought everything was great today. Came here with some friends for lunch. It was a cozy spot while we sat at the bar, which was comfortable. Chris was great. He took our orders and made sure our water glasses were ful. The hit sake was nice for a colder type of day alon with the miso soup that came with our lunch combo. My spicy tuna rolls were delicious while my steak was really tender. (got it medium rare.) The chicken was flavorful as well. The amount of fried rice was more than enough for two people. Would recommend trying for anyone who enjoys hibachi style food or sushi. read more

OK, so the Food is good, but every time we eat here, we get the closest you can to food poisoning. I don't know why. Serves is really hit or miss; it's either really good or super slow. It's also pretty expensive, but that's expected of hibachi. We waited an hour for food and just sat in a booth. We have tried it a few times, thinking it was just bad luck, but I'm not risking it again. The place seems nice, but our table was oddly sticky. Great portion size for the $11 lunch option! Tasty, quick service and great hospitality from the staff (especially Chris at the bar!) I would definitely recommend. Salad dressing smelled a bit off so I wasn't willing to eat the salad but the soup was delicious and tangy. read more

Have still been coming for years, it is no doubt the best hibachi in town, the sushi is still incredible also. Please try the ginger sauce. The service is generally good, with some variations. It's usually pretty busy with lots going on and you may be seated with strangers, so it's not somewhere I go to if I'm feeling some social stress. Not the cleanest place but it's passable, and it's easy to forgive when you have been serving the town for decades and being good to the customers. Also it gets pretty warm in there during the summer months, so dress light if you are prone to sweating :) read more

I have gotten take out/pick up orders from here 3x now and love it! These guys allow for fully customized meals using the SA2Go app for delivery or take out (and now dine in is open again I see). I like being able to customize my meals for dietary reasons so having full control over rice, noodles, veggies, meats, double portions, less portions, or no portions of each. The portions and price as solid, the quality of food is great. I have only gotten the hibachi lunch steak and the hibachi dinner steak so far. I get either double meat and rice or no rice and extra veggies pending my training day schedule. You can ask for more or less sauce use as well. You get clear soup and a side salad with all lunch and dinner entrees as well I want to go back and dine in next time to see how it compares to their take out options which are darn good in my opinion. They offer many seating options if you do not want to sit at the grill. We enjoy sitting at the grill for the experience however I'm sure it can be overwhelming for some so that is a nice option I have not seen at other hibachi restaurants. It is a bit dirty though, the bathrooms could use a little uplift and good cleaning. The hood vents could use wiping down. The food is delicious and you get huge portions. You get everything you would expect from a hibachi restaurant, except noodles. Some I have been to serve noodles too but this place did not. Really didn't matter to me as there was so much food to begin with. The service is good and of course if you sit at the grill you get a little entertainment as well. read more

Now on to the restaurant itself, the floors were too slippery. We had my 81 year old Mother with us and she had 2 people hold onto her so she would not slip and fall. It was okay. We were visiting our daughter and this is one of her favorite places to eat. We went for lunch on a Saturday. I had the chicken and shrimp. Husband had hibachi steak and daughter had Tiffany roll. She got her order fast . We waited nearly 30 minutes for our order. I ordered the chicken hibachi meal to go. Only words to describe it is okay. The portion size was pretty good. The taste was kind of middle of the road. The price was a little expensive for what you get. The chicken and vegetables could really use some sauce or seasoning to go with it. The rice was really good. The soup was okay. Their website website is really bad and it was hard to find a menu. Inside of the restaurant looked halfway decent. It was pretty busy when I picked up my food but there were a lot of people sitting waiting to be seated. Looks like they could do something different with that but they do have limited space. My friend walked into the bathroom before we left, and it was so disgusting she had to walk out - we didn't think much of it, it happens and its possible the staff didn't know and so they didn't clean it yet, so no big deal. So, I'll say this, I used to work here. It was a good time! Kitchen was always sanitary, no cross contamination issues, but if you sit at a booth or a table, be careful because depending on how long your food has been ready and they just haven't brought it out yet, they'll reheat it to make it seem fresh. It's a really clean atmosphere with the possible exception of the bathrooms. The night staff are supposed to clean them however there was 1 or 2 girls who would not do it and they would straight up tell you that they weren't going to do it. We usually have decent experiences here but the last two have been nightmares. We were seated by a hostess that started a new table because they wanted to maintain social distance. The waiter interjected and was absolutely rude, insisting he shove two families up against each other and it left no more than 1 foot between me and the next chair of somebody I don't even know. That being said, we tried to sit at the booths to avoid this problem and give the restaurant another chance and we ended up with just white rice they covered in soy and tried to pass as hibachi rice from the kitchen, the food was cold, and the waitress was not interested in our table because it was not at a cook table. Really unhappy with the selfishness of the wait staff and their blatant disregard to distance. Instead of a polite "welcome to bonsai" We were seated in a condescending manner from there and we waited for a waiter to take our drink order. We ordered delivery. I've had bad experiences with this place before and told my husband not to order from Bonsai, but he wanted cheap hibachi. ‍ I got the steak & shrimp combo hibachi dinner. The restaurant is only a few minutes from our house, but all the food arrived stone cold. My husband ended up reheating all of his food in the microwave. The rice isn't cooked evenly. Some is light brown, some is white, some is darker brown. All the rice is absolutely tasteless. There is no flavor whatsoever. The vegetables were limp and cold. Pretty sad-looking when they arrived. The steak was cooked medium (I ordered medium rare) and was gray in color, not brown. (Steak properly seared on high heat with butter is brown. Steak cooked over a heat that is too low will eventually cook, but it turns gray.) The steak was also quite chewy. Some chunks of steak were enormous, and some were very small. I received a total of 6 shrimp in my "steak and shrimp combo". Keep in mind that each meal comes with 2 shrimp already. The shrimp were cold and unappetizing as well. The restaurant didn't send any sauce or silverware to go with the food. My husband was pretty mad about that. read more

This place is really cool. You can get a good meal and a great experience. I had the scallops and shrimp teriyaki with the fried rice and veggies. It also comes with soup or salad or both. The experience is 4 star worthy but the food is a solid 3 stars. It tastes good, but there's nothing that really stands out to elevate it. The showmanship at the grill naturally depends on which chef you get, but they all have sufficient talent to entertain you and your guests. The shrimp was my favorite, I recommend teriyaki on it, just like the fried rice. I got double fried rice and no vegetables and I couldn't finish all of it. The prices are really reasonable considering the meat, chicken or seafood that you're getting along with the healthy rice and veggie portion. We tried some of the sushi and it was also good. We had a good experience here and will be back when we come to San Angelo to visit our son as ASU. read more

We came and ate at this restaurant ordered steak to be medium and at the end we cut a piece open and like 6 pieces off of 5 plates was raw steak. Tried asking for our money back and our waitress told us it was a "whoopsie" thinking it's a joke. Then told us since we already ate it we can not get our money back. Went back today to Bonsai and we sat in a booth not at a table. The food came out extremely cold, not even lightly warm. The waitress (Diane) was less then helpful and when they took the food back they obviously just threw the plate in a microwave and it barely helped warm the food. We waited for.ev.er for the chef to come start our food. We were finished with the soup (extremely salty tasting) and salad way before he came to the table. The fried rice consisted of rice, egg, and corn. Nothing else. I ordered the chicken, which was fine but definitely needed sauce to dip it in for flavor. Both sauces were gross. Everything was bland and zero flavor. I wouldn't go back based on the food. No way. Our chef though was hilarious and put on a great show for my 5 year old. He did things just for her. I went with a group of friends for Halloween as just something to do, didn't plan on eating anything because of the crazy makeup I was wearing that I didn't want to ruin. Eventually, the smell got to me and I just had to order something. I grazed through the menu and settled on one of my favorite things, from anywhere, teriyaki chicken. I asked my boyfriend if he'd like to share something with me, since it was pretty expensive and I'm quite broke. Turns out they give you plenty to share, and I left more than satisfied with the amount of food I was given. Only complaint I had was the lack of sauces for the calamari, but it still tasted great. Honestly, some of the best calamari I've had, and I ate it dry. Once they started cooking it was so lively and fun. I love eating at restaurants like this because you can see exactly what's being done to your food and it's entertaining. Moving on to the taste! It was amazing! For starters, usually onions are the only vegetable you can get me to eat, but I ate every vegetable on the plate. The especially weird part is my favorite was the broccoli and mushrooms, in which usually I wouldn't ever take a second bite of. The soup was also amazing. The rice was a little bland but adding some soy sauce to it made it much better. And the chicken was perfectly cooked. "v" the manager was very informative and sweet , made a wonderful Chilton , only good one I've had in town since I've been here. Enjoyed visiting with her . I do not let bad reviews make my decisions for me and I can say I am glad I chose to try Bonsai Gardens today. The new owner of 8-9 months is definitely changing things from what Ive heard.
