We tried Bonsai out for dinner after having driven by it multiple times. Wow was it fast. We ate in the sushi room and ordered the dynamite roll as well as the chicken teriyaki. The portions were huge and we got a full extra meal out of the leftovers. The food was very fresh and tasted great. The service was splendid. We were in and out of there in 30 minutes which is outstanding for a dinner on the weekend. I would definitely come here again to eat. Worst hibachi I've ever had in my life. I'm from out of town and we stopped by because there were a ton of people waiting outside so I thought that was a good sign. The decor was outdated and when were taken to our table, my first thought was that I felt like we were in someone's basement. SOUP/SALAD: The soup was pretty standard, nothing great but nothing bad. Salad was completely drenched in dressing that tasted like thousand island dressing. When I say drenched I mean drenched. CHEF: The chef was okay, wasn't all that interesting and was definitely trying to cook the food as quick as possible and get out of there. He had no interest in being entertaining at all. EGG THROW: (WHAT'S THIS YOU SAY? KEEP READING) So most restaurants do a shrimp throw where the chef cuts it up into itty bitty pieces and throws it at the patron to catch it in their mouth. Here, they did egg. Really? WHY would you do it with egg? Almost no one caught it and it kept getting in people's eyes and hair. What a horrible idea, I'm not sure who thought of that but that is the worst idea EVER! SUSHI: I ordered a sushi roll, the spicy tuna crunchy roll. It came with 8 huge slices so I was excited but it might be one of the worst sushi rolls I've ever had. It big but completely flavorless, I wasn't even sure what I was eating was tuna, there was no spice at all, and the roll was falling apart, they definitely did not squeeze the roll enough to be kept together. HIBACHI FOOD: You get 2 pieces of shrimp with whatever you order, I was so grossed out when I saw the chef did not de-vein any of the shrimp. So I had black veins throughout mine; did not eat them. I ordered the filet mignon and it was fairly good. I have to say that the portion sizes are ridiculously large. Very very big. The fried rice was standard, the vegetables were ok but overall the meal wasn't all that great. And typically there is 1 sauce for seafood, 1 sauce for meat, yea you get one, that thousand island dressing AGAIN. SERVICE: The service was terrible, he never stopped by to ask if we needed anything, I had to constantly stop him for something and he seemed annoyed by it and was very obvious that he was annoyed which made me really irritated. Good service = good tip. Bad service = bad tip. Duh. But this guy obviously didn't care. VERY IMPORTANT: If you look at the grill, on the outer parts and in the cracks, there is gooey black goop everywhere and stuck on food EVERYWHERE. I mean EVERYWHERE! So then I have obvious concerns about health and safety of the food I just ate. I think this place has massive health code violations. read more

I just got back in town to see family for the holiday and as usual we hit up all the old spots I loved. This place has not lost its touch! We got the following: Shrimp Tempura (5/5) Seafood combo (5/5) Filet and lobster (5/5) Steak and shrimp (5/5) The hibachi served as the main star along with the chef who despite the year of 2020 kept his high spirits. Their COVID protocols allowed for us to be seated as a party of three at a table alone. In fact we were the only people in the restaurant which made us feel even safer. RUDEST HOSTESSES USELESS MANAGER DIRTY (dead bugs on floors) FILTHY BATHROOMS We thought it would be a great place to celebrate our daughter's 7th birthday...wrong!!! We called ahead of time and was told there was no wait. Arrived 15 minutes later and was told it would be a minimum 45 minutes. Multiple parties of the same size that arrived later than we did were seated before us. The two young hostesses working the front desk were two of the rudest and most unprofessional individuals that I have ever encountered. I've had better interactions with junk yard dogs...Eyes rolling constantly and literally acted like taking names down for a waitlist was a painful task. You would have thought I told them their wigs were crooked, their outfits were ugly and their parents didn't love them. It was truly surreal. The manager was also completely unbothered when the wait time and rude staff were brought to his attention and was absolutely useless and unapologetic. First time I have ever asked to speak to a manager in my life, but from the way this place is run I would have thought he'd had enough practice responding to complaints professionally, but apparently not. After waiting for an hour, we left and I told the hostesses on our way out that they ruined my 7 year olds birthday dinner and they should be ashamed. One hostess proceeded to yell at us "meet you outside, bitch". All while I was holding my 3 yr old son on my hip. I should have put my children in the car with my husband, gone back inside and slapped the eyes out of the back of her head, but I was raised right. Glad we didn't have to stay longer and actually taste the food, as I'm sure it has also gone downhill. The owner of this joint should do an undercover boss and terminate all of the trash. we waited almost 2 hours for a seat!! they sat everyone that came in after us saying they called ahead and got on the list. I know this is crap because I watched them all check in after us! The Hostess lady was rude and very dismissive. When we were finally seated (table of 6 for my birthday) no one spoke to us for 13 minutes until a couple came in and "filled our table". that is when we got to order drinks. By the time we FINALLY got to order food they were calling last call.. we checked in at the hostess stand at 7 o'clock!! I used to eat here frequently and would have given it 4 stars in the past. They have updated the interior, which looks great, but they raised the prices and reduced the portion sizes (hibachi). I still love their Dynamite roll and some of the other sushi, but I was rather disappointed last time I went for hibachi grill. I was SO disappointed with my Tempura Udon that I've ordered many times in the past. I was feeling like I wanted soup, and remembered this was a rich, warm, delicious broth with creamy udon noodles, veggies and tempura shrimp. We got take out and when I opened the container of broth it smelled off and there were things I couldn't identify in there. I'm used to fish cake, but, Idk what species this was from and was rubbery and tasteless. It looked like some sort of green bean and a tiny mushroom was in there that I've never seen before. Placed an order over the phone-- Teppanyaki Chicken entree and a Dynamite roll. My food was ready by the time it took me 12-15 min to drive from home to drive-thru window! Food was excellent, as usual, and the Dynamite roll at Bonsai continues to prove it is the best specialty sushi roll anywhere in Jackson by a mile! Has been my favorite spot to take a date for hibachi and/or sushi for 20 years... quality has always been consistently high as long as I've been eating here. My wife and I went by for lunch today specifically for a hibachi vegetable plate. Much to our disappointment, the "vegetable plate" consisted only of onions and zucchini. We were also served the same vegetable portion as everyone else at the table. Wish there had been a list of what the "vegetable plate" consisted of before we ordered. To me, 2 items do not constitute a "vegetable plate". I inquired about other veggies that I have gotten at the restaurant in the past such as mushrooms, carrots, broccoli, etc. and was told that I had to purchase those items separately. I have patronized Bonsai for many many years, so much so that I have gotten Christmas presents from staff members because of my frequency and my generous tipping, and usually have nothing but great things to say about the restaurant. I enjoy the food a lot however they way they do their togo pick ups is kinda messed up. You can only pick up togos from the drive up window which wouldn't be a problem except if someone gets to the window before you and their food isn't ready yet then you have to wait for their food to be done cooking even if yours is ready and waiting for you. And dont try going inside to just grab your togo order cause they wont ring you up inside. So you may have to wait in line in your car for 30 minutes to get your togo food even though it was ready 20 minutes ago? Its pretty messed up to me. I've only ever had the sushi here, but I've always enjoyed it. If you're just getting sushi, you don't have to deal with the mad rush and noisy crowd of the hibachi section, which is nice. The sushi servers are always very friendly and helpful. I'm a huge fan of sushi, but definitely not an expert. The servers and chefs here are always willing to make a suggestion or answer a question for you. The food comes out really quickly, which is great. I've been here a bunch of times and it's never been crazy crowded (again, at least in the sushi section). The sushi is really good! My friends and I all really enjoy it. We come here pretty often as a group of five or six, and it's always a pleasant experience. I rarely feel like making the trek out to Lakeland, but for good sushi that's pretty affordable, I'm willing! read more

This WAS my favorite restaurant until tonight. I've never had a problem because I'm always satisfied, until tonight. Our cook totally ignored my side of the table. He catered to the other side and gave them the majority of the rice. It was sooo obvious. Then he didn't prepare the salmon the way it should have been. He had it too close to the chicken and didn't cover it up. The salmon wasn't seasoned and he didn't put any lemon juice on it. I've eaten here for 20 years, I know what to expect from the meal and how it's prepared. When I asked them to take the meal off the ticket, they never asked if there was anything they could do. THAT WAS DISAPPOINTING! The manager wasn't the least bit concerned! She NEVER asked if there was something she could do! I requested they take of the automatic gratuity, but they refused to do that! Even though the reviews weren't as good as others my wife daughter and I decided to try this on a recent visit to Jackson Mississippi. The place was very clean and that's where the good stops. First of all my drink was constantly empty as well as my wife and my daughters. The chef came out rattled his knife and fork on the grill for about 5 Seconds and said "That's all I know sorry." I thought he was joking and it was going to be a good show however he was not that is all he did the entire meal. For the rest of the meal he just cooked. My daughter would not eat her shrimp because even though the shrimp was deshelled it was not deveined and you could see large veins on the shrimp which made her sick to her stomach which I understand knowing what those veins actually are. I do have to say the steak was very good and cooked well. I was disappointed as this was the first Japanese Steakhouse I've been to that did not have yum yum sauce. Instead they had a white sauce that had a VERY strong onion flavor. The whole reason we tried this place over another one was because we wanted to try the banana flambe. It took about 15 minutes to get after we ordered and was not really that impressive. There are many Japanese steakhouses in Jackson so it's safe to say when we go back we will be trying a different one and not going back to this one. read more
