They are getting four stars from me for a few reasons: 1. They picked up the phone fairly quickly 2. provided spot on advice as to what to do next with an injured bird we found 3. Thank goodness for 1 & 2 since they are literally the only injured animal biz on Maui That shared, the guy who answered the phone was barely tolerant of having to repeat himself more than once with the phone number of the place he was sending us to. We were able to visit and take a tour of this wonderful place. They have tours 2-3 on Sundays. You need to pre register online. We visited maybe 10 years ago and were happy to see that it is still doing a fabulous job taking care of injured domestic and wild animals. The zoo has such a wide variety of animals all co existing and look so happy and content. Loved hearing all the birds chattering. They are a totally volunteer organization so donations are happily accepted. If you want a fun Sunday outing this would be a good choice. read more

This was an amazing experience. We don't like commercial zoos or "for profit" sanctuary sites. This one here takes all injured or strayed animals. Really friendly staff and so eager to teach about their work with their animals. Our entire family had a great time. This sanctuary functions by donation only. Please help by making a donation as this goes to feed, groom and clean the animals and their enclosures. The staff was amazing and we will definitely stop by every Maui visit! read more

We finally had the opportunity to tour the Boo Boo Zoo today. We had heard so many positive things over the years, so our expectations were set pretty high when we arrived at the very humble location. We were cheerfully welcomed by Sylvan & his greeting committee: his beloved goat, Baby, and her friends. We were led on an informative tour through the property while interacting w/ all the Zoo's residents. We encountered chickens, ducks, peacocks, Axis deer, a wide variety of birds: pigeons, cockatiels, cockatoos, tame mina birds, a 2 y.o. pig w/ a neurological disorder - who wouldn't have survived if he wasn't given necessary help & treatment, 124 rescue cats- many of whom need daily medical treatment for the rest of their lives, an orphan bull who was rescued from Hana highway, and more! Sylvan has a heart of gold and has sacrificed so much to care for countless injured, ill, or homeless creatures. He never once asked for an ounce of anything from anyone attending our tour, yet it's obvious that caring for these animals is a costly endeavor. As a result, we will be making regular donations to support them. If you have a heart for animals, I highly recommend making a visit to the Boo Boo Zoo -- it's a fortunate opportunity to spend time w/ Sylvan & his precious animals. In our case, they definitely met & surpassed our expectations!! read more

The "Booboo Zoo" is the only place that I know of that you can bring a hurt animal & they will try to save it even if you don't have money and can't afford a vet. Sylvan is an Angel on Earth for all of our Animals. I live on Maui and have been wanting to check this place out for years and I finally made it a few days ago. I brought a tame hen that lived on my property who was very hurt and I couldn't find anyone who would help "just a chicken". I called this place and Sylvan exclaimed, "bring her in!" As soon as I got there he embraced the chicken with open loving arms and examined her. He realized her leg was broken and bandaged it up and cleaned her up. I took the chicken back home, so I'm feeding her and caring for her, but they would if I wasn't willing to. They will try to help any animal. It's so great to know I can have almost instant help if and when I ever need it! If there's any place that needs & DESERVES donations and/or volunteers, this is the place!! If you happen to be looking for somewhere to DONATE to or give extra charity money to, these are the people !!!! Thank you so much Sylvan. While in Paia walking around, I found a hurt baby bird and was worried it may not survive. I think it was prematurely hatched. Anyway, I looked this place up and headed there with the little juju. This place was a bit hard to find but once I got there I was amazed. There were goats, sheep, dogs, cats, chickens, and tons of other creatures all around my car and on the property. They dont have people there very often so I had to call to get the guy to come out. Some older man named Silvan. Anyway, good for him! I would love to own a property like this one and turn it into a refuge! SO COOL!!! The baby bird survived! Yay!! read more

We visited the Boo Boo Zoo twenty years ago. Our daughter was 3 years old and has always loved animals. Sylvan and Susie were so kind to her. Sylvan showed her all the rescued animals and explained all their stories. She still has their children's book The Boo Boo Zoo. What amazing people. Such kindness and compassion. I hear it is still a wonderful refuge for the injured and homeless animals of all kinds on the island Please, please donate to them. They are not a "big organization" and are always in need of money to treat and care for the animals others do not. read more

I thought this place had more reviews and, like the only other review here, I am shocked to see a place with such admirable and noble intentions get so little love from the Yelp community. This is unlike any zoo you've been to before. Actually, it's probably unlike anything you've seen before--especially in a place like Maui. At Boo Boo Zoo, you'll see a variety of animals ranging from goats to deers to one very large cow, all intermingling and coexisting with each other. The fact that a deer didn't stop, freeze and run away from me as if the faceless murderer of Bambi's mother revealed himself is a miracle to see alone. Seeing such a community of animals, all diverse and unique in their upbringing and upkeep, is something that is notable enough to elicit a review from a person that has only one other piece of Yelp criticism (which involves a bad sandwich experience in Subway). In summary, if you want a piece of Maui that isn't touted in your expected soulless, pre-digested and capitalistically-driven tourism, stop by Boo Boo Zoo and say hello to Sylvan. read more

I started volunteering at the Boo Boo Zoo while on vacation approximately 12 years ago, and I still volunteer once a week whenever we are here. It is a very special place and Sylvan, Suzie, and the rest of employees and volunteers are so committed to doing everything they can to care for all of the animals that are surrendered in to their care. Each year I see the physical and financial struggle it takes to keep the BooBoo Zoo solvent. I finally made it to the boo boo zoo. What an amazing place! When we drove up the animals greeted us , all they want is love! The owners and volunteers are fantastic with so much loving care to all the animals . It reminded me of the Christmas Cartoon "The Island of Misfit Toys". I encourage everyone to visit or better yet volunteer if you can, they can really use the help. They also rely on donations to help care for all the wonderful animals! We went to the Boo Boo Zoo where we met the owner Sylvan. What an amazing guy. He's dedicated 30 years of his life to animals in need. If you have kids or even if you just love animals this is a worthwhile stop while on Maui. You'll meet horses, birds, goats, cats and a dog among possible other animals in need. I fell in love with the cats. They were all wonderful ambassadors for their species. One blind cat especially caught my heart. He sat on my shoulders as we toured the special needs room. If nothing else, this place deserves recognition for helping animals that others won't. They are a donation driven organization so your visit makes a difference to being able to house and feed those animals. Visit. You'll have fun and leave feeling good. read more

We came upon 2 birds on the concrete sidewalk right below a light fixture in Paia. One looked like the mommy bird and the other one was a baby bird. We had no choice but to pick up the baby. Did not know what else to do. In desperation, I looked up wildlife rehab Maui on my phone and found East Maui Animal Refuge. I was pleasantly surprised to hear a person pick up the phone after 5pm. Sylvan did not hesitate to help. His only concern was that we might get lost looking for the refuge as it was getting dark. We are so happy to find this refuge. We met Riley, the rambunctious great Dane, Debbie, the deer, Bear, the goat, and several other animals. This surprise encounter made this Maui vacation extra special. read more
