Lovely theatre inside one of the UofM buildings. I had never been before so I got a little confused…read moretrying to find the place (it's on the 2nd floor of the building) and then when I did I discovered I had to visit the box office which was back on another floor to buy my tickets. The line was a bit long and I had arrived REALLY close to curtain so I was stressed but once I got to the front it was relatively painless. I sat in balcony and had a lovely view of the stage. The seats were fairly comfortable (I didn't even need to get up and stretch during intermission!) and I thought the sound in the space was fantastic. The decor is not ornate like a lot of theatres around here but it's still lovely and filled with a lot of beautiful dark wood detailing. Parking in the area can be kind of sticky but I did luck out and found a meter spot right next to the building. But don't count on that. There's a parking garage a little west of there. Leave early to give yourself ample time to park there and hit the box office if you don't already have your tickets in your hot little hand.

Amazingly enough every time I went here I got a groupon discount for the opera or a play, so its always been a really good deal at something like 2 for $20. A great date night outing with your special someone if you happen to catch an event (or a groupon). Once you do find this place, it is a very beautiful theatre, with a strong 'well worn' feeling to its stage, the type of feeling that tells you "great things happened here!". The Opera's we've seen were all very enjoyable, and each time we had a blast. The last one however, had some issues with the guy manning the projector for the translation (italian to english). In some cases he would either be too slow, and then quickly skip through sections of dialogue and in other cases you could 'swear' that they spoke more than the 8 words being projected. Either way, overall a great experience. Technical difficulties happen, so I'm not too hung up about it, it didn't detract from the overall store of the Opera.

Atmosphere was phenomenal, crowd was great, food and drinks were your typical stadium pricing, but overall a great experience. We ubered to the game from our hotel to avoid traffic and parking. The amount of vendors outside the stadium was unreal too. So many pop up shops. I will say though, good luck getting online on your phone while being around that many people, we had to walk almost a mile away from the stadium to connect with uber. I would do this experience 100 times out of 100. Best football game of my life even though Michigan lost lol.

See www.artrainusa.org For a few days, January 20-24, 2007, the Artrain is at home in Ann Arbor with "Native Views: Influences of Modern Culture" -- this collection of works by Native American artists was selected by Joanna Bigfeather, who once worked at one of the excellent Indian museums in Santa Fe. I admire the skill and sophistication of these artists who combine original ideas about their ethnic background with the methods and approaches of highly modern art, to great effect. Several of the works make use of product logos that have (mis)appropriated Indian faces and stereotypes, such as LandO'Lakes Butter -- these works are very effective, I feel, in making us (non-natives) see how we accept and ignore stereotypes. One painting in the exhibit shows the Santa Fe Chief logo suspended over a railroad track through the desert. (At a museum in Santa Fe last year, I saw a much more extensive collection of similarly themed works, so I was esepcially tuned in to this.) Irony: the Artrain gift shop offers train memorabilia, including an un-ironic reproduction of the Santa Fe Chief logo. OOPS.

The Old Detroit Observatory IS old, but it's not in Detroit. It's in Ann Arbor…read more You can't walk in at any time, so visit their website to find their open hours. Aim for an evening when the sky is clear, as they'll open up the dome and point the telescope at something, often the moon. Sometimes this place is empty, sometimes packed, but every time I've gone observing here I've been awestruck. The moon through their main telescope, if nothing else, is the kind of thing you see and never forget. It will change you to see the moon up close. You will almost want to cry, it is that beautiful. Honestly. You can also stroll around downstairs and look at the meridian circle, an astronomical tool that used to be the way we found the exact time. Ann Arbor's train station, for example, hired the ODO to use its meridian circle to find the time--this way the trains wouldn't crash because one clock said 10 and one said 10:02. Anyway, it's something like the only one left in the country so it's very special to be able to see it. You can also look around at their collection of astronomical tools. Bonus, check out the old map of Ann Arbor. This is special, sweet place. And no one seems to know about it. Take a date here. Bring your visiting friends or family members. Or just come by yourself and chat up other people who are getting to see something absolutely incredible.
