There is absolutely nothing like coming home to Ann Arbor and watching Yost Arena light up the sky as you're driving down State Street. To step into Yost is like stepping back through history of all those who have skated the school to championships, a building that has stood the time of history and a coach who has given the players, the team, the school, the fans, and the asst coaches his heart and soul to the sport he loves. I hold season tickets in the handicap section right on the ice. Due to a spinal cord injury I can't skate anymore but I can still feel rumble of the bleachers. Go Blue

Checked out the public skating for the first time (hours are limited, and never on game days, but you can rent a pair of skates cheaply). It's a pretty interesting experience. The soaring windows bathe the ice in natural light, giving this college hockey rink even more of a cathedral feel than it has at night. You can sit on the same bench as the team sits and take selfies on the ice. Highly recommended experience if you're a college hockey fan in town for a game and can add a day to your stay.

I'm surprised that nobody has reviewed Yost Ice Arena before me. This may be because locals think it's only open to University staff and students. That's not so-- the arena also has public skate times. Or, the lack of reviews may be because the open skate hours are limited, especially in the summer. Hours change seasonally, so to confirm public skate times, call ahead. According to their website, you can rent ice time for various groups or for birthday parties. How fun would that be? The one and only time I went there, I came pretty close to falling a bunch of times. I used to ice skate a lot as a kid, but I hadn't been on skates for about 25 years. Still, it's not unlike learning to ride a bicycle, and my balance got better pretty fast. It's a great workout for your thighs- I was sore the next day, and I had only been on the ice with a friend about 40 or 45 minutes. Admission is $5 for non-student adults and $3 for youth and students. There's a discount on the noon skate, which is $2 across the board. You can also purchase a passbook for multiple visits to save money. Skate rental is an additional $2, or $1 for the noon skate, and they have a pretty good variety of sizes to rent.

The ice is cold and smooth. It may be some of the best ice I have skated on; it rivals the old Joe Louis Arena.

After that horrible experience, I decided to change her lessons to one-on-one private lessons with a different instructor. It was mainly a sweet girl named Julia who worked with my daughter. My daughter became so excited about swimming! Julia was very patient with my daughter and after the lesson, she'd come right up to me and explain to me everything they went over, and what we needed to work on at home. So even though our first experience here was god-awful, our visits after were so that I'm still giving it 5 stars. Also it is a very nice pool to hang out around with ample swimming pools/areas. Really large shallow wading pool for young children.

Man, it's rarely open. This season it hasn't even been open at all because of a mechanical issue and last summer it had several closures and hiccups throughout the season. And when it was open, a good part of the pool (the deep end) was closed off because they were short staffed. That means that all the other spaces got extra crowded, which wasn't the best scenario for a relaxing swim. Such a bummer! It's walking distance from my house so I REALLY REALLY want to love it, and mostly I REALLY REALLY want to visit it but we just can't because it's still been closed. We still walk our dog through the park, and I love the baseball games and checking out all the rad skaters in the skate park, but the pool is just a real bummer.

I hadn't roller skated since I was 12 and now I'm a really confident skater. It's a great workout too! You won't get this kind of attention and instruction anywhere else. This place focuses on adult skaters, age 21 and older. The classes are small. I took a class for one hour on Sundays with the same 8 people and we kept building upon what we learned. Adjustments and modifications are available for people with injuries too. We had students of all ages in this class, from 30's to 70's and we could all do it and work at our level. This personalized type of class doesn't exist anywhere else. Also, on Wednesday nights at 8:30pm, you can come here and practice and skate for $10. (They have free parking available out front.) I had the good fortune to be taught by the owner, Keith. Keith is a spectacular skater and human being. He is kind, patient, funny, and an excellent teacher. He has truly built a supportive skating community and I'm honored to be a part of it. Keith offers a variety of classes and he is also working on new classes to offer. He's open to ideas and feedback too. I'll be taking a class on outdoor skating next, as well a workshop on backwards skating. Learning how to skate here was the best decision I've made in a long time. I highly recommend taking class and joining this awesome skating community!

There is a bar upstairs but we did not visit that. 16 Biggby logos greet you before you even hit the lobby but don't expect to get a cup of coffee...No concession stand available at all (there is one there but it is closed, and from what I hear, has been closed since the Black Bear takeover). Ice conditions were poor, the glass around the South rink was so fogged parents couldn't see the games, and the scoreboard in the North rink didn't work on Saturday so coaches had no idea on time, penalties, etc. and had to keep asking scorekeepers for info. When rink conditions were brought to the attention of the rink staff, there was not much more than a shoulder shrug given. The Zamboni driver even backed onto the ice before handshake lines were finished which is a serious safety issue. For a rink hosting expensive youth tournaments, this is unacceptable.
