I happened to be on my way to a hair appointment when I spotted The Book Rack on Metairie Rd. I…read moreknew immediately what I was doing right after the appointment! Normally I'm nervous about checking out new places alone, but this was a perfect solo adventure - the kind of cozy, cramped place that you don't want to have to squeeze past your friends to get around. Meeting Mrs. Cookie, who was just helping out the owner by watching the shop, and Big Boy, the little purse dog running security, also helped ease me into this new experience. Not only was Mrs. Cookie helpful in directing me through the overwhelming sections and willing to help me search for specific authors, but she was so personable and even had quite the interesting tale to tell me about her life - which all seemed so impossible that you would think she were a character from a book. Overall, there was an abundance of hidden treasures if you have the patience to look. I got a copy of Anne Rice's Queen of the Damned, and George R. R. Martin's A Game of Thrones (in like-new condition) at a great price! Come here for the oldies, but goodies, and the smell of thousands of pages that every book lover adores.

Stopped by ten minutes before close on my way to what I thought was Bank of America (nonexistent)…read more Sooo glad she didn't close early and I was able to meet the infamous bookstore kitty and score a set of the Brian Sanderson Mistborn series. Typically I come to browse and grab any good deals I find, but with minimal time, I let her know which authors I was interested in and she ultimately checked her car after scanning the shelves to get me this series that she was planning on reading herself! They retail 10-12$, but I got them for $8.50 each. Not the world's biggest deal, but cheaper than retail nonetheless. I'm grateful for the effort she put in to find me something to leave with especially so close to her closing time.

Such a good art spot! While visiting the Mandeville Lakefront, I decided to stop for coffee and…read morepastries at The Bean since it had been recommended by Google Searches, and it was well worth it. The inside of the shop had beautiful art of many different mediums and reasonably priced, yet sturdy stone rings(which i bought one of). The coffee could've used a bit more flavoring but was overall fairly nice. Lastly, The Bean had GLUTEN FREE scones that were filling and wonderful! Go check it out!

Welp I may be in the minority, but I'm just not a fan of tapas. In general it isn't a good value…read moreand in the case of The Pawn Shop what we ordered just didn't satisfy. The brussel sprouts are swimming in creme fraise and that was a turn off. I have rarely met a brussel spout I didn't like but it was not good. The poached shrimp dish ( name escapes me) comes in flavorful and nice tasting broth accompanied by great bread, BUR there were only 4 shrimp for over $20 - definitely not worth it. The tostada with roe wasn't bad, but it was unremarkable. Lastly the hanger steak was waaaayyyyyyy too salty and that alone cancelled out the pretty good, but meager, side veggies and minuscule teaspoon of polenta. It is an 'experience' to enter the restaurant through the faux pawn shop... You DO need to bring something to "pawn/leave" and that was fun and kinda funky but overall I wouldn't go back again, no do I think I can recommend it to others based on our experience. Our party had four people and 3/4 felt the same way.

As a Funko pop collector, this was very disappointing to see that they changed the Disney display. I couldn't even look at any of the Funko pops that I wanted to look at because they were stacked up on the ground hidden in a bookshelf. Super disappointed with second Charles decision to do this.

All the little things that made me want to drive out to this place are dead and gone. Shelving for old X-Box, PS, Nintendo, Sega, Atari, and Intellivision games? Gone. Replaced by row upon row of soulless Funko Pops. Boardgame section? Hardly any used and all new... and no real reason to buy there as opposed to Amazon or other online BG retailer. RPG section? No more 1e D&D modules or older materials, or anything else for that matter. Just the same old 5e crap, with Critical Role mixed in, with video game guides slowly spreading into the section like a cancer. The only good thing was not in the store, but in the parking lot, where they had a car show going on. The place turned from nerd-vana into just another BAM! bookstore (the owners of 2nd & Charles). Won't be back.
