Still a great selection of books and good customer service. People are happy to help and knowledgeable. Prices seem to be around the same as Amazon so it's good to be able to support something local. However, it's been a while since I've been in here because I'm not usually in the area, but I was a little bummed that they took out the cafe. There's not even a machine to get a gas station latte. I LOVE Books a Million! I am a frequent visitor of this location. It's always very relaxing when I visit this store. I do have a suggestion... since the coffee store has been removed from BAM, there is a large empty area in the store that would be PERFECT for a lounge area or workspace. I think bringing back seating would greatly enhance the shopping experience. Customers could use the space to relax, do a bit of work, or take a break before continuing to explore the store--potentially leading to more purchases. read more

If you happen to shop at Books A Million, and are offered their membership card, READ EVERYTHING CAREFULLY. The clerk will tell you you'll receive an email 300 days prior to expiration, reminding you to renew. What the clerk DOESN'T TELL YOU is that if you don't respond to that email within 30 days, your "MEMBERSHIP " WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY RENEWED. I spoke to the manager, Danielle, (who gave zero "F's about customer service) and her statement was "that's not hot how we train our people, they are trained to make that known. I call horsehocky. It's a revenue generation scam and they know it. If there were an independent bookstore in this bastion of ridiculousness of a city, I'd be there. read more

Beware of the "free magazine" scam. Your credit card information is given to the magazine mass distributor and you are charged without notice. There is a phone number on the credit card statement, which allows cancellation, but it's highly annoying going through 5 iterations of "We have a special offer for just you!" for each magazine. My review is probably bias because I deeply enjoy bookstores and how quiet they are. They don't have the stale smell that libraries do and who doesn't love a crisp clean new book. Being this is one of the only bookstores in waldorf I enjoy coming here when I can. The place is organized and has plenty of things to pick from besides books only. They have candles, incense, book lights, and other knick knacks that I don't need but it looks so nice I get drawn in to adding it to my purchase. The staff has always been helpful and close by that I can easily ask a question and get it answered. Bathrooms are clean and the store in general is tidy. I have visited this particular Books a Million once previously, before walking in again this morning, and I was able to have a better look around than before (I uploaded photos for those interested). I had not been in a Books a Million until I moved here to MD; they are not in Austin, TX. My first impression is that it is like a somewhat downgraded Barnes & Nobles in looks, and a little less so in product. There is ample lighting, but it feels kinda dull (dark?). When you walk in, you do see echoes of Barnes & Nobles, down to the Nook display and counter (hint, hint), but I am not sure if there is any actual affiliation. It certainly isn't as lively as any of the Barnes & Nobles I have been in, despite the presence of a Joe Muggs cafe. This morning there were like 3 people sat in the cafe, and about 4 more customers and 3 employees. It is as quiet as a library. They have several shelves to the right-side filled with bargain books, and depending on your genre of choice, they are either well-represented with cheap buys, or not. I am a Current Affairs/Politics/Modern History book junkie, so people like me are S.O.L. :( But if you like Cooking, you're well covered. The rest of the bookstore, i.e the entire left-side of the front entry, and back walls, has regularly priced books and other bits - toys, games, etc. I was disappointed with their Current Affairs section, because it doesn't specifically exist. There are two sections named Social Science and Politics that are adjacent, and the books are just mixed in. However, the shelves are not stuffed with volumes and there are several spaces between books. Not threadbare-looking, but it gives you the feeling that their entire catalog for this section is not out on display. The books are regularly priced, and I did snap the odd title just to check if it would be cheaper online. I didn't really check out the other topical shelves, as I wasn't interested in anything else today, so I am uncertain if the other sections are similar. Ok - there is only so much you can say about a bookshop - it has books in it. What is missing from here is the ambiance. It just feels...dead. It was empty before when I visited a few weeks ago, and it was dead as disco again today. I have to check this place out on a weekend, when most people are presumably out and shopping. I hope it has a nicer buzz to it then, what with the coffee shop - as otherwise, it feels about as inspiring as a dentist's waiting room. There are no pictures or decorations on the walls - at least not that I noticed, which made the place feel more hollow than a Barnes & Nobles. Its not as institutional or sterile looking as a well-worn public library, but it doesn't feel "happy." I don't know what other word to use, the place just felt kinda dead. It has books and stuff in it, but it just doesn't feel "right" to me. Maybe I'm just a weirdo, I guess, but it feels like I am in a building that happens to have books in it, rather than a good bookstore. I can't even recall now if there was background music playing. And weirdly enough, I normally feel compelled to grab a coffee and browse the stacks and shelves and tables - but here @ BAM, I barely felt like lingering, and the sense of emptiness just didn't compel me to want to fry away my morning before finding a place to watch the Italy v Costa Rica match this lunchtime. I actually get the feeling that this is like a smaller, satellite store of sorts. It is in the middle of a shopping plaza wedged between an Advance Auto Parts and a Sports Authority, and further down a Burlington Coat Factory and a hair salon supply type store. Yeah, action-packed. The store front is kinda sad-looking, not a stand-alone outlet mall-esque location at all. I really love bookstores - and I want to like this BAM - but I can't get over the empty, lifeless feeling I got on visiting it twice now. It also sucks, for me anyway, that it is in bloody Waldorf and I have to drive 20 mins out to feel...lifeless, lol! But I think the area I live in wouldn't really appreciate a nice bookstore much, anyway. On the plus side, the employees I've encountered are very helpful, and quick to smile and say "hi." And I've been around them as they talk about books, so it seems they enjoy being around books and not just there because its a Walmart-type job. And before I forget - in addition to the Joe Muggs cafe, they have Wi-fi access - BUT I think you have to be a member of the charmingly-named Millionaires Club Card scheme, for 25 Federal Reserve notes. For what it's worth, if you go to the BAM website now, at the top of the landing page, you'll notice that they are offering a $5 off a $35 purchase code, for use in-store. This B-A-M was well-stocked when I visited. However, that's the extent of any compliments for this store. I am an African American female that was racially profiled by one of the white male cashiers. The incident occurred when I asked about an educator's discount card. Once Taylor, the sales associate, requested my ID; all hell broke loose. Taylor asked for everything but a pint of blood before giving me the discount card. The petty microaggressions are rooted in white supremacy and systemic racism. Taylor was shocked when I confronted him about profiling me. Perhaps this is business as usual for him. I find it pathetic and unacceptable. I will not tolerate this type of treatment from them or anyone else. As I told Taylor when he asked what he could have improved, I said, "Do better." read more

I visited this store today and it was an overall average experience for me. Keep in mind I am a white woman who probably appears to be middle class. My experience was average, but unfortunately for the young black woman who checked out ahead of me her experience was dehumanizing and probably borderline traumatic. I witnessed this young woman and her partner being profiled by the staff while in the children's area. It bothered me enough to notice. I've worked retail, I know what it looks like. As this couple was leaving the store the security sensors went off. The shopping bag was ripped from the woman's hands and the staff spent at least 5 whole minutes whispering and going through her bags. The couple was then forced to walk out the doors to make sure they didn't beep and then thrusted their bag (which beeped again on its way out, great job staff). Not a word was spoken to this couple other than irritated guffaws and grunts. Let's not pretend that if this had happened to me, a white woman, I can guarantee that I would've been waved out the door with a reassuring "it's fine!". I couldn't shake how much what I had just witnessed bothered me so after loading up my car (I spent $100 which I sorely regret) I approached the couple's vehicle. I found this young woman crying, bawling crying, in the passenger seat. I asked if it was about what I saw and she broke down. She was so hurt. She explained to me that she had even left her purse in the car to try to not look like she was up to any funny business. She told me she experiences this often because of her appearance and that she is tired and hurt. I validated her feelings and asked her permission to say something. On my drive home I called the store and spoke with the manager, Denise or Danielle was her name. This woman was nasty. Gave me no answers and took no responsibility. Basically telling me to get lost and and that SHE was the one who had headed this whole racial profiling mission so my anger was pointless. My heart hurts for the young woman I met today. I am disgusted by the management at this BAM. I will never return and I will share my experience with anyone who will listen. I would LOVE for someone for corporate to get back to me about this. read more

I haven't been to a BAM since 2006, so this trip was pure nostalgia. The customer service was great, and the gentleman in the cafe was a sweetheart. He gave me recommendations about drinks that weren't on the menu. I ended up getting a nonfat latter with sugar free chocolate and caramel. It was awesome! I sat for a moment to read a book and do some work, but unfortunately, the Internet was painfully slow. It was too a point of frustration. As I wondered around the store, I noticed that they had vinyl. Yes, they had Prince's Purple Rain record. I was in heaven browsing through the selections. I would definitely return to browse the vinyl and book shop and of course buy a latte, but there is NO WAY I would stay to do work with that slow internet. read more

Been a club member for a couple years now. It helps to curb my book and comic addiction. However, they are rather expensive if you are paying full price. I often stay in the discount section and make out like a bandit. They used to have a phenomenal collection of discounted comics and graphic novels... appears that's fading out. If you don't mind paying list price their selection of Graphic Novels is incredible. The bummer is that this store is almost always uncomfortable. Either disgustingly muggy and hot or cramped and unorganized. I'd have no problem spending more money/time there or reading in the lounge area if it were actually comfortable. read more

I had a gift certificate for BAM and only 30 mins. in which to spend it (movie starting), so I had to get in, choose, and get out. I pulled up a wish list on my phone and started looking on my own. It didn't go well. I looked around for some help on the floor, and there was a guy, but he was helping someone else. I went to the front counter, and one of the people at the counter was happy to help. He patiently looked through their inventory on the computer, as I went through my wish list. Admittedly, they did not have several of the books that interested me (thus the reason I knocked off a star), but I don't have "common" taste in books (we'll say). I wasn't entirely surprised that they didn't have some of those books. Finally, we hit on a few that they had, and he insisted on helping me find them (not just telling me where to find them). We quickly located the books, I paid (same guy), and off I went. I made it to the movie without a problem. Mission accomplished. Seems people are pretty hard on them in the reviews below. I placed an order with Books a Million over a week ago (Feb 7). I chose them because they offered the expedited shipping option (about 3-5 business days). On Feb 12, I realized that my order was still pending and so inquired about whether they had my book in stock. The response said that they would contact their warehouse and get back to me as soon as they had a response. That was five days ago, and I still haven't heard anything, can't cancel the order, and have just ordered it from Amazon because I need it for school. read more

The staff is always friendly and able to offer suggestions when needed. I enjoy the quiet atmosphere in the store. There is music playing but it isn't obtrusive. They have a good selection and you can sometimes find some used bargains. There are also a lot of good items in the store which made Christmas shopping easier. read more

The bookstore has a great selection of pretty much anything you could be interested in. My biggest complaint is that it is a run down looking store. The cafe seating area is trash. The chairs are all ripped up and smelly. Seems like the restroom is rarely cleaned properly. The urinal in the mens room has spots of urine a saliva from people spitting for weeks at a time. It's disgusting. And the cafe is just around the corner. Clean this place up and it wouldn't be too bad. read more

BAM is located in the same place Borders used to be before Borders filed for bankruptcy. It's even set up the same way Borders was. And like Borders, every time I call or go there to look for a book I'm told "Sorry, it's not available in store, but if you want we can order it for you for home delivery". So much for saving shipping and handling money. Better just to order online and be done with it rather than wasting my time calling or going to the store. read more

This is a great book store. The books here are less expensive than Barnes and Noble. There is a great selection of classics, and if they don't have something, they will make an effort to get it for you. I find it to be a much more peaceful place than other book stores, and the clients and staff know each other. read more

Went to books a million to buy a book for a upcoming trip the prices on their website are not the same as in the store. Also the employee asked me if I wanted to join their loyalty rewards program to get 10% off future purchases. I asked if I could use the the 10% off on this purchase. If I could give no stars I would. This store is horrible!!! I can never find the book I am looking for because they just throw books in random places! National Geographic in the Art section??? Murder Mystery in the Romance section? Really? I was there this morning looking for books on digital art....couldn't believe that the "photography" section was completely empty and the "fine arts" section was filled with photography books....took 15 minutes for me to read the titles of every book in that section to try and find at least one book on digital art...is it not in that section? Is it somewhere else? who knows...it's not like the people who work there know any better....they are as clueless as I was on trying to find books..... No wonder everyone loves Barnes & Noble and no one ever talks about BAM....they suck!!! Show some respect for your customers and your books. read more
