There's a reason I stopped going to BAM and its how pushy the cashiers are. This most recent trip reminded me why I stick to Barns and Noble. We were in the area and decided to stop by since it had been a while. Picked up a few manga books and headed to the check out which was a fairly long line but moving at a decent pace. I go to the next open cashier and she asked if I could wait a sec while she did something on another register. No problem she was just a minute or two. As she came back she saw my books and said "OH do you or anyone in the family have a membership?" I said no thank you, I just want the books. She sneered at me and said "You mean to tell me you have a manga reader in the house and NO MEMBERSHIP???" I just looked at her and said "Yeah, we're from out of town...I just wanted to stock up...Just the books please." "Well just FYI you could save (X dollars) if you sign up today." I looked at her and just said "You know what, keep the books. I dont want them if you're gonna keep hassling me" She looked at me shocked like I had slapped her. "Excuse me miss, I'm just doing my job! You said you didnt want it so I backed off. Its not my fault you dont want to save money." I left after that without my books and she kept belittling me, getting louder as I left. Husband had a completely different experience with his cashier mentioning the program once then nothing else. Guess it depends who you get but if you dont like being belittled for not buying into their program, steer clear. read more

We went to this location many times and had no previous problems until we were checked out by this miserable old guy in a wheelchair or something who unfortunately couldn't leave his sorry act at the door and nearly snatched the phone out of my girlfriend's hand because he couldn't explain well enough how the discounts worked. Will come back but we will be asking for a new associate if its that sorry bum checking us out. read more

Absolutely love the books and the sales that I can get here but I've never been more turned off than by the customer service. I visit about 5-10 times a year and over half of my trips involve someone at the register being rude or talking to the other employees while checking me out. I use my teacher discount instead of the membership now and the shame and grief this lady gives me each time I'm in there is unreal. read more

I will never return to this or any other location. The check-out is annoying and long as they ask you to donate to and join so many things that your head will spin. As if the original check-out wasn't bad enough, I had to exchange a shirt I purchased for my niece for a larger size. They actually have to do a time-consuming refund of the purchase and then you get the joy of repurchasing the item. I am normally a very patient person, but my last two experiences took all the patience this girl had left. read more

I was checking out with a few games and upon checkout, our cashier Ann asked if we wanted to sign up for their card. I politely said "no thank you, not today, we're in a bit of a rush". To which she replied "oh so you must like wasting money then" and then made a comment about how much we were spending. Ann needs some more training clearly before she should be allowed to interact with customers. I've worked retail too in the past and that is no way to get someone to sign up for your in-store card, or even come back to your store for that matter. read more

I've been to this BAM a few times. I've honestly never bought anything cause the prices are too high. I'm not expecting Amazon prices, but for a the extra they charge they should be more customer focused. Unfortunately, they are not. I can't say I've been acknowledged or asked if I needed any help once. If you buy new records their selection isn't bad, but again a little pricey. I find the floor/carpet in the children's area to be filthy. Overall this is a place to browse unless you need an urgent gift. Otherwise, I'd just order online. read more

I just stood there half shocked. Innocent bystander looking at all the shitty junk to buy. Observing in real time why this store has less than 2 stars. Staff have never learned how to speak to customers. Fire everyone and start over. read more

When you go here, expect to be completed disregarded when you ask for assistance at the front counter when there's a "line" of people at the register, even if there is more than enough staff to go around. Also, be prepared to get yelled at if you accidentally talk out of order at the line. And, most importantly, you will be hassled to sign up, buy this, receive these magazines, and endure the pain of unwarranted, pitiful advertising when you're just trying to check out your book and be on your way. My experience here has not been promising, and it's a shame that there aren't as many bookstores nearby that are willing to compete. Also - prices are ridiculous. The only plus in my opinion is that the coffee shop within the store smacks. Enjoy your visit, hopefully there will be other redeeming factors for you here. read more

If I could give this store a negative rating I would. This past visit reminded me as to why I shop at Barnes and Noble and not BAM. I was searching for a certain type of book for my son for Christmas and the rude man that "helped" me, could not have been any nastier in his demeanor if he tried! He generically walked me to the section and said they'd be somewhere in there and acted as if I was bothering him asking him to do his job and assist me. He then mimicked my response to him!!! DISRESPECTFUL, RUDE, NASTY!!! I will never go back to that store. I found someone else there to help me, she wasn't much better. She rang my books up incorrectly and then when I asked for my original receipt back she got extremely rude and said you didn't give it to me. I said yes I did when you asked to fix your mess up ringing me up. She then found it on the floor and instead of apologizing, held it over her head and I grabbed it. TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! I've found the cashiers to be any combination of pushy, attitude heavy and/or miserable almost every occasion.

Not that impressed with this location, so in there hobbies section, they had a huge selection of gardening books but when it came to anything macrame, natural dye, or any of those odd ball hobbies they didn't have anything, disappointing. And there cooking section was so tiny read more

The store is dirty! Especially the bathroom which looked like it hadn't been cleaned in days! The café area is sticky, and the person behind the coffee counter made it seem as though I were interrupting her day. While the book and gift selection is good, the check-out process is so annoying with all the extras they have to ask each customer. Nag, nag, nag. The bookstore is my happy place. However, this location has the rudest register employees. Just a bunch of grumpy old folks. Not only are they rude to the customers - every time I'm there they're arguing with each other or talking about another employee rudely behind there back. read more

Completely agree with everyone's assessment of this store. They have a good selection of books and I like the atmosphere but cashing out is a long, arduous task. They push too hard to get you a rewards card, magazine subscription, preorders for this book are that movie...... It's a pain when you are there for one specific thing and want to be in and out quickly. Also, if there is only one person on the register, it severely backs up the line, especially if the customer at the register IS interested in all that stuff. Just wish it was more streamlined and efficient. It's terribly off putting and is now the reason I mostly order books online. I'd rather wait the few days than deal with that over and over. read more

I'm crossing my fingers that as the coffee bar staff gains experience, it will get better. I was disappointed in my chai tea and the pastries are obviously frozen and shipped in from far away. There are enough great bakeries around here to order fresh items from. It's too bad they can't contract with one of them. I'm a little disappointed in the children's book selection. It's great for chapter books and young adult titles, but the early readers and beginner chapter book selection is weak at best. Again, hopefully that will improve as the store ages. read more

While I generally find their selection to be good, I was appalled by the rudeness of the woman at the counter today. I have never experienced such disrespect from a stranger, especially one who is supposed to help me. The registers are apparently not marked well, but that still did not warrant the absolutely hurtful manner in which this woman talked to me about it during our encounter. Warning - if you have an online order, apparently don't go to the register that says "pick up online orders here!" Would've just bought elsewhere rather than deal with this woman at checkout. read more

This place used to be a pretty inviting relaxing place to sit and have a coffee while working. Lately it seems every time I go in there are people sitting in the cafe being ridiculously loud and lacking in basic manners. I get that it's not a library, but people sit in the cafe to read and work and we shouldn't have to hear each other screaming across the room at each other or taking on their cell phone. The cafe also reduced their menu a lot so it's not a varied as it used to be. They also took over the back of the store with Christian stuff. I seriously don't know why there has to be a dominant religious section in book store that isn't a Christian Book store. We have enough of those all over York. I miss Borders. read more

Tried to shop here today and ended up walking out because there was an elderly female employee that was verbally abusive and nasty with no filter. Dementia maybe? I tried to call and talk to the manager but I guess they don't answer their phone. I'm sure the employee has a job for life because she could pull the age card if they terminated her. Never in my life have I encountered such a rude employee. My first and last time at this BAM location. The other employees were great. But it only takes one bad apple. read more

i walk in to books a million, and this elderly woman gives me the nastiest look i've gotten all morning to start off my interaction with her. i put my item i am purchasing on the counter, one small container of hand sanitizer, and she continues to converse with her coworker for almost a full 2 minutes ignoring me completely before she finally scans my item. i was brought to a screen where it told me to insert my card, and then was prompted to remove my card, which i did because it asked me to donate and i thought i had messed up the transaction. this woman raises her voice at me and says in a commanding and very degrading tone, "sir can you PLEASE insert your card" as if i'm some sort of idiot. honestly the whole situation made me feel very unwelcome and uncomfortable, and this woman needs to learn to control her temper when dealing with customers. edit: this was only when i entered the establishment. my check out experience was also a nightmare thanks to Anne, which is what i learned this nasty woman's name is. two friends of mine and i are checking out separately, and she yells to us asking if we are all together, which we tell her no we are not paying together. one friend of mine tells her he would not like to pay the annual fee for an account with the store, and she glares at him and proceeds to loudly explain why he needs to sign up in a very aggressive manner. every time she spoke she it was loud, obnoxious, and disrespectful. when my turn at the counter came up, she was quiet initially, until she asked me if i would like to donate to the salvation army, and due to our very recent interaction i simply mumbled no, and she once again raises her voice in my face and says "i can't hear what you're saying to me" and i said no once again very clearly for her to understand. i asked her if she was having a bad day today, and she responds with "no, i'm having a great day!" again, rude and sarcastic. i then state that i guess she must be this rude to all of her customers, and walk over to enjoy a cookie and a coffee. i will most likely not return to this establishment, and convince others to avoid it as well because of this one woman's actions. someone needs to teach that old bat some manners, and i pity anyone who has to deal with her on a regular basis of any sort. read more

The store is nice and the selection is great but the employees are extremely pushy and overbearing. I declined the yearly club and then the cashier told me that I was entitled to a free 2 month subscription to 3 magazines...I signed up for it reluctantly (my mistake) and when I got home and read the fine print I realized that I had authorized another company to charge my credit card for said magazines...I promptly called the phone number on the brochure to cancel and everything is automated, I haven't yet been able to cancel it. I am very frustrated with this store and the way they do business, they almost seem like scam artists and I don't see myself going back. read more

This is a decent book store. The best thing about this place is probably their childrens section. They have lots of children's books and activities. They also carry movies, although the few times I've been in the movie section, the DVD's seemed a little pricey. read more

I rarely shop here, but stopped in yesterday for a special book for my elderly father. The male clerk at the register was so rude. He asked if I had one of their store cards. When I said I did not, he offered one to me for $25. I declined politely, since I don't shop there often enough. After I declined the offer, he put my book and receipt in the bag, said absolutely nothing, and held the bag out to me. I wish there was another book store in York. I will never go into this store again. I guess I'll have to drive to Lancaster from now on. read more

I stopped in to pick up a book the night before a flight and will never return after the horrible customer service I recieved. It's a great store to look at books to purchase somewhere else while you sip your coffee. If you do buy a book, be prepared to be assaulted with offers of magazine subscriptions, club memberships, and whatever "charity" they're working for at the moment. I truthfully love it. They have a LOT more than Borders. I've been in there twice now. The service is pretty good, there's more stuff for little kids (which is always good with a very young brother), the prices aren't that bad, either. If you look around the store, you can find some good books for under $5. The only thing is that the rewards card, like Borders had, but you have to pay for it each year. $20 for a year, and when you sign up, you automatically get coupons and it's like... 10-20% you get off of every purchase. Not bad for how much money you save, really. But yeah, I highly recommend it. read more

I like the book and gift selection here but the cafe is horrible. The barista who was working today doesn't greet you, she finishes texting on her cell phone before she takes your order, she is more consumed with switching out the few coins of tips she got into a dollar bill than making drinks, which the large chai latte was so foamy it only filled half the cup. We asked her to remake it with no foam and it was still foamy and tasted horrible. She is the worst. Clearly doesn't care about customers or making drinks properly. Won't go back read more

Cashier wanted to renew my daughters membership. She lives in philly which is 100 miles away.I said does it take time she said no. I say ok. I then asked my other daughter if she though the bill was correct. At no time did the cashier tell me about a 25.00 fee. I did not realize why the bill was so high till I got home. Had to call another location to get this takin off my debit card. This person had to call me back because they forgot to ask me for my card number. Not going back. They try to sell you something extra every time I go there. read more

I frequented this store all of the time when it was a Borders. Compared to B&N, this store doesn't have the selection that B&N or even Borders did. They also advertise on this site that they offer free WiFi, which they do not. You must have a yearly membership to use it whereas at B&N, it is free to everyone, member or not. They have a pretty good children's section, a lousy reference section and a good assortment of magazines. Being that I live halfway between York and Lancaster, I generally go to B&N for the better selection. One other thing, I called there tonight to inquire about their hours and got a twenty second sales pitch about buying old CDs, books etc, before I could ask my simple question. But, I guess when they aren't coming through the door, you have to grab them over the phone. read more

I frequented Borders at this location in the day for reasons of selection right down to their 'Wookie Cookies'. I assumed that when they closed and BAM moved in, it was going to be comparable to Borders, but instead, it's lacking in many areas. First, the selection is not as good, unlike B&N, you have to be a member to use the WiFi free of charge. And the one thing that keeps me from going in there more often is the doggedness of their cashiers to sell memberships and magazines. There is one male teller in particular that continues to try to sell these things, even after I decline. He actually talks through me! I live in Wrightsville and would rather drive the few extra miles to go to B&N on the Fruitville Pike. read more

Terrible service from an older worker named Ann. This is the second time I went to the bookstore and the second time she rang me up. As a veteran retail worker, I am aware that you are to ask someone if they want the store card. When you say, "no, thank you" this woman, in her most demeaning voice, scolds you. Today, I forgot to take my drivers license out of my small purse and had to pay cash. She couldn't believe I did not have my license and huffed while I pulled out 30 DOLLARS for a single book. I will be returning the book tomorrow, as I refuse to support a store where this type of worker is employed. I found the same book on Amazon for $17. I was fine paying an additional $13 for a book I really, really wanted to read until I encountered her. It is worth more to me to return the book, get my money back and buy it online (like I should have done in the first place). read more

BAM is great if you're looking for candy and assorted chachkis, bad if you came to a book store looking for... books. You can buy a water bottle with a quote from psalms on it, perhaps even a leatherette journal or Pop Vinyl character. However, I wouldn't come here looking for any books in particular. While the front store associate was incredibly friendly, he was unable to locate the book I wanted because "it's not on Amazon." Well, that's why I came to a bookstore. I still wandered the store, thinking perhaps they just didn't carry my somewhat obscure text. I promptly realized that there is very large section of books on tape. I perused the New Age section for laughs, as books on Voodoo and Alchemy are displayed prominently. I suppose we can all hold our own definitions of New Age, much of which apparently consists of witchcraft in York, PA. BAM is unfortunately what I would expect from York, where the library is the size of a closet. I would much rather spend a rainy day at York Emporium, where print material is the focus. read more

I have reviewed this store before, but there is something I would now like to add. I stopped by there a few days ago, about an hour before they opened, as I had forgotten their hours of operation. Aside from the handicapped parking spots, the entire front of the parking lot was full of employee cars. Since when do customers have to park to the back of the lot while employees take the closest spaces. That is not at all customer friendly. What made it worse, on my way back from the door (to view the hours of operation), an elderly woman had pulled in and was making her way toward the door. She had some issues with walking and I told her they were closed to keep her from having to make a wasted trip all the way to the door. SHE should have had a close spot, not the employees who have no trouble walking themselves to the door, rather than them taking a close spot for their entire shift. That on top of not having free WiFi unless you buy their yearly card and the cashiers who hound about purchasing a membership or magazines, even AFTER you decline the offer... I seriously have no desire to shop this store. One word - Amazon! Cheaper books, less hassle. read more
