I was in Morgan Hill to meet up with some friends recently.  I was early to the event, so I had time to check out BookSmart before they closed on a Saturday.  Nestled in a busy shopping center, there's plenty of parking in the lot (even though it was a busy weekend afternoon/evening).   While the store isn't the largest, there are plenty of books adorning the walls and lining the shelves in the middle aisles.  There are plenty of the normal best sellers available, but also plenty of treasured finds.  Though I only spent 20 minutes in browsing the stacks, I stumbled upon an independently published sports book as well as 2 childrens books I haven't found elsewhere, all of which will make great holiday gifts.   Coincidentally, the day I visited was also BookSmart's 30th anniversary party!  They had complimentary glasses of champaign as well as a photo booth for their regular customers (both of which I politely declined).  It's great to see an independent bookstore thriving in this community.  The next time I'm in the area, I will stop by and take more time to check out the inventory! read more

Everything went well!!! This store has a in house notary which is very convenient for those who need to get documents notarized. I stopped in there on Tuesday to get a couple books as gifts. I was helped by employe that guided me to 3 books for my young adult kids and my niece. Very enjoyable shopping there. I love books so when I saw this place last night I was super excited! I went in browsed a bit but the selection is limited they don't have a section for African American authors which was disappointing. I found a valentines book and word search book I was interested in purchasing however the gentleman working informed me after watching us browse and make selections that his computer was down only once I brought the books to the counter for purchase. He then in the middle of looking like he was helping me purchase the books took a call without an excuse me to inform someone his computers were down as I'm standing at the counter he simply walked away no I'll be back, sorry give me a minute, nothing. I ended up leaving the books on the counter and left the store while he was in the back. It won't deter me from going back however I think courtesy goes along way. This was my first time here and as an avid reader I hope the selection can become more diverse to include others in the community. read more

Waiting for the owner of Stems florist to return from her appointment - sitting in my car - staring at the sign directly in from of BookSmart...... WHAT? What a wonderful surprising experience. Two women at the front desk; friendly, personable, informative. One of them the owner Cinda. Upon entering there are a few small greeting card displays which are chock full of variety and for whatever reason they are completely different from the Safeway, CVS, Walgreens supply! I selected one card and brought it up to the front counter and then turned it over to see the price (even though I already decided to purchase it due to it's uniqueness), HOW IN THE WORLD IS A GREETING CARD IN 2022 HALF THE PRICE OF ALL OTHER CARDS IN I'TS CATEGORY????? I then returned to the card display and selected 4 additional cards. And then later returned and met Cinda's husband whom I payed for Melissa & Doug farm animals. This place (have to return to check out the books alone), is an ABSOLUTE GEM. I would strongly recommend and will absolutely return. read more

A friend and I went to Booksmart to try a new bookstore for Independent Bookstore Day 2017. It was a quick drive from south San Jose and not too hard to find with it nestled in the corner of a strip mall off the highway. The people inside working were really friendly. The book selection was not huge, but there were many books that you wouldn't find at other bookstores. This is a great place and I will be back. read more

Stopped in here yesterday to pick up a donation for our kiddo's at work and was pleasantly surprised! Super cute and pretty good sized book store / ice cream shop. With so many mom & pop book stores going out of business, this is a true treasure not only for Morgan Hill but for the South Bay. I didn't have a chance to stay long but there are lots and lots of great books here and the customer services is fantastic. These folks obviously love what they do as it shows in the care of their store, the patience with customers and the fact that they give back to kids in the community who are struggling. I can't wait to go back, grab an ice cream and get lost in the rows and rows of books they have. If you live in the area and haven't stopped by, you really need to. And even if you don't live close by, it's a fun little afternoon trip for the family. read more

This independently owned store is definitely a treasure. The people who work there are very knowledgeable and friendly, and they carry a wide array of books, toys, etc. Their most recent additions include a children's area in the back and a cafe in the front. This is my favorite place to go to buy gifts for people (it's so easy to find something for just about anyone), and there's a wonderful wrapping station inside the store as well. I love it! Neat little bookstore close to the soccer complex - a great place to spend some down time between games. It has a small, eclectic selection of books - this is no Barnes and Noble - but there's certainly something for everybody here. They also have a nice array of educational games and toys. There's a snack/lunch bar as well, but we've never actually eaten there because the offerings are not quite to our liking (e.g. hot dogs, grilled cheese, tuna melt) but it's a good concept. This all-things-place is a vital institution in our community. Besides services like notarizing documents and having great books, it is a learning facility for the community due to the meetings they host, We love BookSmart and try to buy all our grandkids gifts there. This store is the reason why you should shop local. We came here to get a gift for a small child. Prices are a bit higher than you'd find in a mass retail chain store, but as soon as you experience the customer service, you see why it's worth it. The cashier offered to wrap my gift in coordinating paper (for free!) so my daughter wouldn't be tempted to play with it. She also told me about the local app called "top hat" where you can earn money for shopping and dining around Morgan hill, and redeem at local retailers! Awesome! read more

Booksmart is a hidden treasure in Morgan Hill! I was in there today to purchase some birthday gifts, and when I couldn't find "just one more book" to add to the pile, the lady that is usually behind the counter found a perfect one for me--based solely on the pile of books I had already decided to purchase! Booksmart has really expanded their offerings since they moved from Monterey Road to 2nd St. Aside from their good selection of books, they also now have unique gifts, lots of fun, fluffy and educational toys for children of all ages, and a cafe that features some really good ice cream! One of the best independently owned bookstores I've ever been to. Heck, one of the best businesses in Morgan Hill. I had a book signing there a couple of years ago. They could not have been more accommodating. They have an excellent variety of books, magazines AND toys for the little ones. Their ice cream/coffee/treat counter is pretty darn good too. Very impressed to have stumbled upon this fabulous bookstore right here in Morgan Hill! It's really a nice place... decorated nicely... clean... and a fair size for a small town. It even has a cafe inside! :) And, ice cream too! I purchased a few books, and my son bought a Webkinz here. They also have some Webkinz accessories. Shop here! This is a great specimen in a dying breed: the independent bookstore. Morgan Hill has no need for a huge chain store when we have such a cozy little place like this that we can call our own. And as an added bonus: The staff and owners actually know their stuff! This place knows books and they truly love their product. To walk into a Barnes and Nobles means that you most likely will have to extract information out of either a computer search engine or a teenager who just needed a summer job. The crew at Booksmart will help you out, talk shop if you want, and just generally be really cool. She helped both my wife and I pick out a book with me not even knowing where to look to finding a book and my wife knowing what author she wants, but not knowing where they would be. OK, I first found this place because I needed a Notary Public, but now I've checked out the whole store. Got some ice cream for the kids: small but good selection. The staff is very friendly and helpful. And they have a back section that I hadn't seen when I was first there that is crammed with toys. Lots of wooden toys, a few cheaper plastic ones. Really a lot of good stuff. The downside is that most of it seems above-average on price. I bought a couple of small things and a book because I felt like I should help support the community, but I'd go broke buying toys for the kids at this place. I let my little kids check out toys for about an hour. The ice cream is lower-priced than Baskin-Robbins, though. It's really a nice, clean, cozy little place, and fun for the kids to roam around in the toy section while the adults check out the books. read more

I'm trying to think of a way to make BookSmart even better than it already is, but I honestly can't think of a thing! This place is no doubt THE BEST independently owned book store... Great selection of books, but BS is way more than just that - The toys/fun stuff section is the best! I always find the silliest presents for my friends, coworkers, and the kiddos in my life. Oh, the ice cream! How can I forget that? Love the ice cream. For fellow celiacs, the staff is awesome and they really extra extra wash the scoop for me, but be sure to mention it! Support this great place! As many local people know, this store has moved and the owners have operated many businesses in town - they now have them under one roof at this fab new location. Wonderful bookstore, neat cafe, and beautiful selction of kids games, toys, and books. I would have loved to have had a place like this growing up. The bookstore has a large selection of books and magazines, unfortunately they have sacrificed a little bit of space for the other options instead of books - so you can't always find what you are looking for - but they will order anything for you and it always arrives fast.
