I came into this bar absolutely blasted on the 4th of July, Remus made some of the most exquisite absinthe drinks and give a very thorough and detailed explanation of the how sugar cube dissolves into the absinthe. I couldn't pay much attention to him in the moment, but after watching the video recordings my friends took of Remus explaining that process I gained a deep appreciation for the country of Canada as a whole but more importantly Remus. Visited Bootleggers on a Sunday evening during the start of their happy hour. Oysters are $1 but they had minimum order of 6. The oysters were served on ice, with lemon slices, and homemade sauces in dropper bottles. The oysters were so fresh and so tasty that we ended up ordering a second round. The drinks were tasty and the servers were helpful! I chose the Mercredi for my drink. The server forewarned that they didn't have the carbonized version of the drink -- but it was still delicious! It caught my eye because it was plum gin based. It also had chai tea syrup, apricot liqueur, lemon juice. I was a little hesitant to get it at first because I was worried the cinnamon or chai flavor would overwhelm the drink but that wasn't the case at all. All of the ingredients balanced each other very well. It also helped that our server said it was her favorite drink on their menu. The location was super cute. Lots of seating at small tables and bar seating. I was a fan of the bathroom! The women's bathroom was very clean, with a cool LED and mirror above the sink. read more

We came here for a fun dining & drinks atmosphere on our trip. The bartenders were entertaining to watch with some really interesting drinks coming out and skillful pours and presentations we could watch from almost anywhere in the main room. The decor was fun, though the space is a little tight, so reservations are recommended and if you are planning to eat a full meal, your table may get very full. There were some interesting things on the menu as well but we ended up with the seemingly more standard chicken sandwich meal. It has a good amount of food and flavor was good, though not quite as robust as we expected based on its menu description. The kitchen is very small but they work hard. Go with the expectation that you're there for the experience and enjoy the space while you wait- don't come in starving, and bonus if you're there for drinks as well. My favorite cocktail bar in Montreal - hands down! Super cool speakeasy vibe...I felt like I was in a James Bond movie. Dimly lit, DJ was spinning some tunes...the vibe was perfect! After a short wait, our hostess got us a seat at the bar. IF you can sit at the bar, do it! Watching the bartenders make their drinks is very entertaining. Starting off, this is my first ever 1 star review because I am appalled. Initial thoughts: My party of 4 had a reservation at 9:30 and were seated right away. Right off the bat, the atmosphere was amazing with live jazz music and a retro red ambience. We were loving the vibe from get-go, however, things only went downhill from there. Bad service: Our server was a light-blue haired woman with bangs, a stretched out black septum piercing and a bridge piercing, with dark eyeliner. We mentioned that it was our first time here at Bootlegger. However, my friend was checking out the specials on the triangular menu set on our table, curious as to what drink it is he asks our server what the drink consists. Our server laughs in a condescending manner, clearly with disdain and states that it is a coaster, not a drink. My friend, initially interested in purchasing a drink, was now embarrassed for not knowing a drink and was hesitant to purchase at all. Unfortunately, our bad experience did not end there. My party being uncomfortable with the unfriendly atmosphere that the server was treating us, decide to just purchase one drink for now (the Ole Ole) alongside 12 oysters. The server, making a scrunched up face, judgmentally asks us two times, "this? for all four people?". Feeling increasingly uncomfortable we say that is all we want for now. As we wait for our drinks, we notice that our treatment compared to other patrons, was pretty much non existent. As our server smiled, refilled water and replenished napkins of others, we did not get napkins at all and our water was never refilled for the duration of our visit. Additionally, our oysters came a whole 45 minutes after our drinks. Overall, this has been the worst customer service I have ever received ever. The oysters were delicious, the atmosphere breathtaking, but our server's attitude and behavior was heartbreaking. I would not recommend this place at all. read more

I ordered a whiskey sour and it came with a giant ice cube in it... the drink is about the same as a shot would be but with the ice in it looks like a full glass. 17 dollars for a shot of whiskey sour and I doubt it had much alcohol also. I give this place 5 stars for the cocktails, because they are DELICIOUS just as much as they are beautiful. I love how the cocktail section is categorized in the flavor profiles of the cocktails (like Herbal, Smoke, Sweet). It makes it much easier to choose a cocktail if you're someone like me who has no clue on certain ingredients and has no preference in the liquor used, but just wants to have a good time and likes something more sweet or fruity :D Also our server was SO nice!! he gave helpful recommendations with both drinks and food, and checked in on us often. He was very friendly too. I got the Flamingo No. 3, under the "Sweet" category, and it was so good. The vibes of Bootlegger is definitely one that puts you in a party mood. The dim lighting with the red lights and decor that adds to the theme of Bootlegging times is very fun. There are table lamps at each table too if you prefer to have more light. The food is just okay and for what it is, it's pricey, so I recommend coming here for the drinks, (whether it's a stop before or after dinner!) While Bootlegger is sometimes referred to as a cocktail bar, a lot of its draw (well, especially for me) is the huge list of whiskeys and pours and flights here. There are over 100 flights you can order off the menu (my count on the current menu was 102). Each is 3 specific whiskeys, typically I think about a 0.75oz. pour of each. By the math, these are generally reasonably priced. I appreciated that your flight includes a small glass of water and a pipette. Often when I've attended whiskey tastings, these are present to allow you to add 1 drop of water to a pour - if you're not familiar, you'd be surprised how just 1 drop can change the palate. But yes, they do also serve cocktails, which will include a menu of them as well as a featured cocktail. Unfortunately, they were out of an ingredient for the current featured cocktail, but I was more than satisfied to have pours and flights. Besides the main bar area, there's a very comfortable looking lounge available that you walk past as you enter. Food is also available here. We didn't order any, but those pizzas looked delicious. If you're going to come here for dinner, as well as drinks, you may want to make a reseervation; if just for drinks, your call. read more

Wow! This place is the absolute dog's bollocks (that is irish for 'really, really good'). Decor is cool - kinda speak east with a chill and old fashioned fusion to it. I don't care if you like whiskey or not. Personally I'm not a huge fan. But if you are into unbelievably professionally constructed cocktails made right in front of you by the ultimate in mixologists, then this is a place for you. Forget about how amazing the drinks are (and they are!). It's the sheer skill of the mixology that will blow your mind. to start, the live jazz music and the ambience were amazing! the lighting and proximity to the musicians really made the experience unique, and the front server was nice enough to switch to english for our group. however, that's where the good things end. i have been to other bars with FAR better service. normally, i do not leave bad reviews nor call out servers because i believe off days are very real and understand how tiring the service industry is. we were assigned a server with long hair, bridge piercing, stretched septum, etc, which i only mention to help with identifying them, as there were no name tags. my friends and i were very excited for a new experience and $1 oysters, and were visiting for the first time. Many issues happened afterwards we were assigned this server. - server avoided our table, and passed our table with a water pitcher 3x without refilling our glasses that w soak es at the edge of the table - waited over 40+ min for our oysters, and was given a condescending attitude when politely asked about the progress of our oysters - server interacted with every table with the exception of ours, and questioned our choice of order excessively when all it was was 12 oysters and a drink ( if there was a limit/ rule of 1 drink per person we were never informed) - server laughed at (not with) my friend when he asked for clarification for something they were selling (a coaster) - server was extremely short with us throughout the whole experience and overall ruined the atmosphere for my friends and i, who wanted to try something new for the first time and appreciate jazz music. overall, be careful of this server if you look younger. would never be coming back, thank you. read more

I am visiting from New York and came across this bar by chance. I thought the drink and food menu seemed really intriguing so I went inside and OMG I am so glad that I did. This place is simply spectacular. The bartenders are so knowledgeable about drinks and just watching them create drinks and put their artistry on display was a pleasure. We were in Montreal and my friend said one of the things to do is to visit a local jazz bar, which I was on board for. Bootlegger was like a 10-15 minute walk from the metro station. We stopped by half an hour before the band started playing. Bootlegger is nicely decorated with all the empty liquor bottles that they've used for their drinks throughout the years. I'm not a cocktail enthusiast but my friend is. The waiter spoke English so thankfully, I didn't have to impart my broken french on anyone's poor ears. I got the flamingo no.3 and my friend got this cocktail with smoke. Her's was so fancy. The waiter made a big presentation out of it and smoked the cocktail in front of us. The drinks were good - you don't only taste the alcohol. There's a good mix with the other flavors. We were also huge fans of the band.
