Long Island City, Astoria, Elmhurst, woodside, Flushing and so many more places that make this borough amazing!! I love the diversity that you see walking through! Queens is fit for a Queen...hehehe! I truly love that queens isn't such a big attraction like Manhattan. Yes prices for living is still high due to the fact you are in New York simply but the sidewalks aren't filled with people at every turn. There are several small shops that have great food or even little items from people that are locals to Queens! Of course there are several subways and buses that you can use as a form of transportation. There is also the Uber and Lyft drivers in the area. Queens has taken me in and I really enjoy being apart of the community!! This is a community you can raise your family in! Besides Manhattan I've spent more time in Queens than the other boroughs. I don't get here as frequently as I used to. I was always going to the Target before the Target opened in East Harlem. Another favorite my daughter and I enjoyed is Georgia Diner. Old school meals for the hearty appetite. If we didn't go to the diner we were frequent customers at the Outback Steakhouse. Over time we became disenchanted with all the Outback locations and stopped going. Our current visits are to the Queens Center Mall. We have the feel of being in the burbs while having the subway ride like city kids. Besides they now have Cheesecake Factory and Olive Garden nearby. I can't say enough about the shopping in Queens. It's so much more pleasurable to me than the crowds and tourists in Manhattan. The stores are stocked in Queens. You don't get leftovers in a ransacked store like Manhattan Shopping. I have friends that live in Queens but never visited their homes. I'm sure they are beautiful. I do know getting to and from work is very time consuming for them. Especially if they are working in Manhattan. All I can say is I love this borough. I'm glad I live where I do but love to escape to Queens for the day!! read more

Queens is special to me being a Met fan and also this is where some of my family lived (as well as other parts of NY). I have memories of being outside playing on summer evenings and looking right down the block and seeing Shea Stadium. I think about Rockaway beach, the sights and how a co worker of mine surprisingly makes the commute a couple times a week to NJ from there. I think of Flushing-Corona Park, which would be sight for me on my trips there to visit family. I've heard that not only Queens is the biggest borough geographically, it's also the most diverse (if not one of). Both Airports are also home to Queens which certainly must make the air space quite busy, but interesting how that works out. Queens like NY as a whole has much to it. read more

For my five hundred reviews, I am going to dedicate to the best Borough in NYC. Once somebody someone wise said (Jando) "Queens was never the forgotten borough. It is the best-kept secret in NYC" and I cannot agree more with this phrase. Queens has become one of the most diverse cities in the world, if not the most, here you can find people from all any part of the world, which makes it welcoming to any of the different cultures of the world. Pretty sure you can find almost any type, delicious and best ethnic type of food with is a big plus, from any fancy restaurants, food truck and many more, you can almost find it all here. Home of the best baseball team in the world The New York Mets where they lived on our lovely Citi Field, where we still BELIEVE one year we will conquer the world series as we did on 1986 and 1969. Queens also is home one of the famous grand slams the USA OPEN. This Borough also offers one of the best way to get away from the state of New York, using the different airport, the famous JFK and LaGuardia. Queens has been my adopted borough for the last 18 years. Growing up in Manhattan, Queens had always seemed like a foreign country and in some respects, it is. You have to cross a body of water to get there and it's full of foreigners. It's a funny/strange thing that when you write your address in Queens, you list your neighborhood (i.e. Flushing, NY 11354) instead of writing Queens, NY like you would do in the other boroughs like the Bronx, Brooklyn and Staten Island. In Manhattan, you would write New York, NY, but that's a whole other debate. And what's up with all the street suffixes like St, Pl, Av, Rd, etc. I get Blvd as a main thoroughfare, but why have 41 Av right next to 41 Rd? It's just confusing. So how many different neighborhoods are there? Each with their unique blend of ethnic fabric & flavor, making Queens the most diverse borough of the city. My forays into Queens had always been sporadic. The last being a visit to bf's early childhood neighborhood. If fact, Queens had been a place from which the few and far between bf's came. It seemed a less crowded, more suburban, more front lawn kind of place in toto than Brooklyn. Now, Queens is in the news for a terrible reason. Along with Elmhurst, bordering Corona, ironically, is the epicenter of Coronavirus. The televised updates are horrifying. There is no boredom in the hospitals there. (Perhaps not also ironic, Saint Corona is being called the patron Saint of epidemics. Some sites explain that is a very recent designation. Her feast day is May 14.) read more

Review# 420 Hello all my Yelper Friends. I first was introduced to Queens as a child when my parents took me to the 1964 World's Fair. I did not know I was in Queens. But had a wonderful time at the World's Fair especially with the small world Pavilion, Sinclair Oil's Dino Land and Tomorrowland. We returned to the fair the following year and lamented when it closed. This started my romance with Queens. In 1969 the New York metropolitans made history by winning the World Series championship. I sat glued to the television as a child with my grandparents rooting for what seemed The Impossible. I can never forget their jubilation when our team won. And there was born another Mets fan. A half of a century later Queens once again called my name. With the World's Fair as memory of my youth, I traveled to Flushing for a first blind date with my wife-to-be. I met her for the first time at the Sheraton in Flushing. As our eyes met, I knew my search for my soulmate had come to its conclusion and had brought me back to Flushing again. Like a Phoenix from the Flames, I had been Reborn. Flushing was absolutely amazing, I had lived in a more rural area of Long Island, where am I was accustomed to the sidewalks rolling up after 9 p.m. Flushing Queens had the most exciting nightlife, with restaurants that never closed and Karaoke Bars that sang Into the Night. I discovered all the exciting eateries and places that my wife had called home. I taught myself Mandarin Chinese that I could become a Community member of my new hometown. Now 6 years later, I have fallen in love with my town of Flushing in Queens, Planet Earth. I know every nook and cranny and alleyway here. I know where all the free parking is and the great restaurants. I have worked hard and I now have a beautiful Home and Office here in my new hometown here in Queens. Being able to afford living in the metro area is not easy. I must travel 600 miles a week to the tip of Long Island and in between, to earn my living. But I am so happy to make a big difference in folks lives, with the work that I do. I protect others from harm, and fear. To know my purpose in life is a wonderful thing. When I was ready to leave Brooklyn, I wanted to move to the "suburbs" but not of out NYC so I chose Queens years ago. :-). From Jamaica Avenue, Austin Street, Broadway, Queens Blvd, Myrtle Avenue, Metropolitan, Woodhaven Blvd, Main Street, Northern Blvd, Shore Blvd, Astoria Blvd and many many other streets that stand out to make up our beautiful melting pot of Queens. From the cool beaches, parks, restaurants, museums and shopping districts there's so much to see and do in Queens. A variety of cultural and ethnic communities with yummy international food within blocks apart. Plenty of public transportation to get to any area. Quick and easy access to travel to surrounding boroughs and Long Island. To date, when I travel and people ask me what part of NYC am I from? No lie, I hesitate because how can I choose Brooklyn or Queens? Both boroughs are a part of who I am and make up this feisty but sweet young New Yorker. :-) read more

Of course I am biased giving 5 stars because I grew up here! But seriously, probably the best borough of all. We have almost every culture in the world, if not all, residing in Queens. That also includes the delicious, massive variety of foods you can find. Growing up in NY makes you spoiled. I did not appreciate home as much as I should of, until I relocated to SoFL. The people here in Queens are sociable and friendly. For you tourists, it is a myth that is NYers are @$$holes. We are fast paced and always need to get somewhere. But if you ask where is the MET or corona Ice King, not only will we tell you where it is; we will tell you the best route. Trust me, try it. Just don't stand in the middle of a walkway! Queens is filled with history. We have Flushing Meadows Park, where the World's Fair was held decades ago and the giant silver globe. Rogers & Hammerstein House in Whitestone. Rudolph Valentino and Mayor LaGuardia's summer home in Bayside. Fort Totten in Bayside. Any type of Asian cuisine in Flushing. Franny Lew. Citi Field (aka Shea Stadium) in Flushing. Vitamin Water Headquarters started here. I seriously miss the food. Jackson Heights and Elmhurst provides many Columbian and Indian food. Whitestone is heavily filled with Greek and Italian. Astoria is filled with almost every cuisine you can think of. Me being half Czech, I appreciate two different places to enjoy Czech food here. And let's not forget about the staples-pizza, bagels, and Chinese! I never had bad Chinese in NYC. Or bagels. Come to think of it, probably pizza too! If you research any list for best bagels, you are going to come across Utopia Bagels in every search. They are located on Utopia Pkwy, close to the Throgs Neck Bridge. I always order a dozen and stick them in my freezer when I get back to FL. The best pizza is debatable. Depending on what you like, each pizzeria is different. For me, the best slice is thin, crispy on the bottom, orange colored and dripping in oil. Sounds horrible but if you taste it, you will see what I mean! Years ago, when I first came to NYC, I met this lady at work who became a very good friend over the years. Rose. She lived in Queens, and I often took a train from Brooklyn to her house to work on the projects over weekend, and spend time with her family. I would play old platformer games on her computer or work for hours hunched over drafting boards, while she cooked some simple filipino food for all of us, singing as she did so in tiny kitchen. In a way, mama Rose and Queens became my adoptive home. This is how good-hearted and welcoming people who live here are.... Now, it is 2014, and I still come to Queens when I need food for my soul. Queens to me is all about diversity. It is so multifaceted and different from every angle, you will never get bored exploring it. The World Fair and Fresh Meadows, old-school shops of Elmhurst, delicious food in Astoria, the craziness of JFK, and Museums that are truly hidden treasures - that is all Queens. *****Number 300***** What better way to celebrate my 300th review, than to review the borough I live in now, QUEENS. I have only lived in Queens for 3 plus years. During my time here, I have discovered a great place to live, Astoria. It has all the comforts I need. A beautiful apartment with a balcony that I enjoy during the summer. It is affordable with plenty of street parking. Astoria is safe, clean and convenient to Manhattan and just about anywhere. Astoria is also the capital of meat on a stick carts and I am the Duke of the lot. lol... There is Flushing with their wide variety of restaurants. Phobang Restaurant with the best Pho. Lao Dong Bei Restaurant with delicious cumin lamb and slice fish. Zhu Ji Dumpling Stall with some tasty dumplings. Then there is my favorite Hunan Kitchen of Grand Sichuan with the best fire and spicy dishes ever. I have the Arepa Lady in Jackson Heights. So many late Friday and Saturday nights for hot, tasty arepas with all that cheese. Yum. Sammy's Halal with cheap halal meats and spicy sauce. When in the mood for tacos, Taqueria Coatzingo. The Courtyard in Sunnyside has some tasty Guinness. Saint's and Sinner's in Woodside for beers, burgers and fun. My favorite summer place to chill and have a beer; Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden in Astoria. Queens has a sports team, the Met's. There is theater at The Queens Theater in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Overall, Queens is a great place to live. There are many options with a cross section of price points. It has a lot to offer. You just need to explore and enjoy. Besides the Met Stadium not being too far off and King of Queens, not many people would give this city much credit. However, even as a Boston girl, I'll give this city credit where credit is due and I've always enjoyed my time here. The place has gotten much more popular, cleaner and safer than what i remembered. I came to visit my girlfriend who lives here and spent the night and honestly, it was fine. There were tons of shops and restaurants within walking distance of her place and it was clean! So people who don't know New York might avoid Queens but I can tell you that this place is worth a stop while in New York. Don't just hit up Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens have great things to offer as well. read more

I was born and raised in Manhattan and I am currently staying with my brother in Manhattan. I lived in Queens only half the amount of time I lived in Manhattan. I choose to make my home in Queens. I love the authenticity of the food in Queens which comes from the diversity. I got my own place in Queens because it is more affordable and you get more square footage for your money. It's so big, the postal office had to break down Queens into neighborhoods. Owning a car in most of Queens is actually doable because most neighborhoods have parking. And it seems as though the traffic is way better than what I experienced in Manhattan and Brooklyn. It's closer to Long Island and the airports. Most of the people I know are in Queens including my boyfriend. It's home to Queens County Farm Museum's history dates back to 1697. It occupies New York City's largest remaining tract of undisturbed farmland and is the only working historical farm in the city. And we have Jando as the Community Manager. read more

Queens is the best of the NYC Boroughs! I grow up in lower East side for 20 years and never know about Queens until I graduated from college. It is the most versatile of the four outer boroughs. Apartment prices are still manageable in many areas but there are less and less of these sections. There are areas that feel like Long Island but without the high property taxes. Queens have almost every ethnic group from around the world represented in this borough. This also means some of the best ethnic foods are available in Queens. Queens have a lots of park and many bike trails. As the city take back the shore and cleaning them up Queens just get better and better. Queens is not perfect and does need impovements; better highway system, the streets are confusing. There is not enough subway coverage. Re-zoning has caused over crowding in the school system. read more

So I'm going to update my review of Queens to include s little more details. I only keep it to the areas that I'm familiar with. Long Island City This area used to be largely industrial but over the years more and more people have moved here which then draws businesses to the area too. A ton of new places, including apartments,hotels, restaurants,and stores, have opened up here the past few years. It's close proximity to the city is getting it lots more attention. Astoria A very busy area with house and apartment buildings. Tons of restaurants, banks, Grocery Stores, Shopping, Nightlife, etc. Parts of Astoria run along the water and Astoria Park is a great park right by the water. Traditionally a Greek neighborhood but that has changed rapidly the past few years. Sunnyside/Woodside Two more densely populated areas in Queens. More apartment buildings than houses. Pockets of stores, restaurants and general shopping. Jackson Heights/Elmhurst/Corona Possibly the most diverse part of the Boro as far as different nationalities. There are tons of different restaurants and shops that are culturally themed in this area. If you shop along Roosevelt Ave, it seems like every few blocks represent a certain culture. Rego Park/Forest Hills/Kew Gardens Tons of restaurants and shopping. Home to the Queens Mall and Austin St. Shopping for days. Home to Forest Hills Tennis Stadium, which is now hosting live shows. Jamaica/Briarwood One of the main transportation hubs in Queens. LIRR Station where you can catch almost every line. Also the AirTrain to JFK as well subway and bus lines to almost every part of Queens. Flushing/Bayside Home of Queen's Chinatown. Tons of Asian cuisine and shopping. Chinese, Korean, Japanese, you can find it all here. TONS of restaurants. Main Street, the last stop on the 7 train. Also home to CitiField. Ozone Park/Howard Beach/Woodhaven Southern part of Queens and the area where there are a lot more house as opposed to a mix of appartments and houses. Still plenty of shopping and restaurants especially in Ozone Park but more of a neighborhood feel as opposed to a city feel. Rockaways/Belle Harbor/Breezy Point The water part of Queens. All of these neighborhoods are very close to the ocean and other bodies of water. Definitely a huge seaside vibe by the presence of boats, harbors, fishing and bait shops, etc. I definitely missed a few neighborhoods, but Queens is a World of it's own! read more

From the infamous 7 train going from Main Street to now 34th Street, To Shea Stadium now known as Citi Field, To the famous Corona Ice's and of course Flushing Meadow Park where the famous Unisphere is located. Queens is the borough where the US Open is held. Where the Mets play, Pretty much Queens is where almost every nationality is located. Its beautiful to see such a expanded community separated in all locations of Queens. You can even go international with all kinds of food from Italian, Indian, Mexican, Chinese, Japanese and that is just to name a few. A child of Queens. Used to hate it here. When I was growing up, I couldn't wait to leave. Now that I'm older...I never want to leave. Almost everything I want is within reach. Culture, art, food, good times. Actually, Queens always had culture. According to Wikipedia (well, depending on how much is factual) Queens was an important center of jazz in the 1940s. Louis Armstrong was a Queens resident. Queens has so much potential, but in a way, I'm kinda hoping it doesn't become the next big thing. Go to Brooklyn for that. Manhattan has lost its touch as a cultural mecca. Downtown Manhattan used to be cutting edge. A playland to be explored. Now its just overpriced, mega-gentrified and boring. Manhattan is only good for meeting up with people, museums and seeing performances. The only awesome part about Manhattan now is Occupy Wall Street. Parts of Queens can be sleepy, backwards, close-minded, ignorant, and behind the times. That's the not-so-cool part about Queens that I can do without. Sometimes though, you appreciate its little time warps here and there. Parts of Queens has very under-appreciated historical value. So much to be explored, and it hasn't been raped as much as Brooklyn. A helluva lot closer to Manhattan than the Bronx. Screw Staten Island. Eh, who knows...I might totally change my mind about Queens in a few years. For now, I'll just enjoy the borough for what it is. read more

It's the most diverse county in the United States, a fact that becomes ever so obvious with a one-way ride along the route of the 7 train from Main Street, Flushing, to Vernon Boulevard in Long Island City and beyond to that other borough that's so crowded and expensive. Great food, great parks, great people and just a subway ride or express bus to "the city," AKA Manhattan, makes Queens an amazing place to live and a wonderful place to have been raised. "if it was on like that, I would come thru Queens..." I'd like to think I'd wind up living in Brooklyn if I came to live in NYC but I'm pretty sure it be Queens. I'd wind up in Astoria. (This thought drew wild laughs from a group of Brooklynites one night, lol. Go figure.) But Queens is huge..the biggest of the Boroughs...from LIC to Astoria to Flushing to Jamaica it's a wildly diverse place. It's most visitors introduction to the city since both major airports (LaGuardia and JFK) are here. Queens was certainly my introduction to the city, when I spent my first night in New York some 13 years ago sleeping on the couch in a friend's little third story walk up Astoria apartment. We walked up to the roof top after my late evening flight, and looking out over the back drop of rows of brownstones and fire escapes against the night sky, I was sure I had slipped into the set of west side story. There's nothing in Wisconsin that quite looks like that. There were open air fruit markets, odd little corner stores that sold me a $3 magenta shirts when I discovered I hadn't packed properly, and little corner Greek Cafes. When I thought of New York for many years after, I thought most of that little area, of standing on the platform to catch the Q train to Manhattan for the night. Astorias changed a bit I'm guessing from then. Now two of my long standing yelp bookmarks (Queens Comfort, Salt and Fat) are for establishments in Queens County. It's not flashy like Manhattan or Brooklyn; but I liked staying here just fine. read more

I'm writing this review based on my experiences living in Ridgewood for 7 years and various other travels here. I didn't grow up here & I do have some bias since I'm very much a city person (not the suburbs type) and I associate this borough with my former married life and ex-husband who still works at the Queens Public Library. Bear those facts in mind when you read this. Queens isn't all bad but it's just not the place for youthful, vibrant types. It's more the place you go to when you can't afford rent in Manhattan or parts of Brooklyn. Astoria is something of an exception, parts of Forest Hills are more hipster & I hear Long Island City is up and coming but when you're here, you don't feel the high pace and fast energy of Manhattan. People & life move a LOT slower here. Lots of slow walking people on the streets, which drives me crazy. Those with pedestrian rage have been warned. I also feel like it's not the place for models and hotties to hang out; it's more of a place for everyone else, the simple hardworking types. Now there are some good & exemplary small businesses here with better prices than Manhattan (restaurants, dry cleaning/alterations, laundry service, hardware stores, etc.) but you'll have to look for them. You'll also see just about every ethnic group under the sun so if you're a racist or only comfortable with your own race or countrymen, you'll have to find your tribe here & not venture much from where that tribe gathers. Flushing has its own Chinatown, Rego Park is more Jewish, Ridgewood was a mix of Polish & Puerto Rican depending on the area (some parts were slowly getting more hip when I moved), Elmhurst is very Chinese but has a mix of other groups as well, Glendale is "white land," you get the picture. There are sketchy parts to Queens you will want to avoid like Jackson Heights (most of the crime seems to happen there if the news media can be believed). There are also parts not accessible by NYC subway that I don't count as part of Queens. They should be forced into Nassau County or set up as a separate county but that's another story. Also, there are lots of people who never leave Queens & act like they live in some town in the Midwest or the South or something. That's not a mentality I can relate to & I wonder why those people are living in Queens when they'd get more space for less money someplace else. Beware of these types. Encourage tourists to see this borough, especially if they feel Manhattan is too pricey and too fast paced. Queens is almost a 180 of that. read more

This is where I was raised so it is only proper I write this with care and ease. Parties? YES, some of the best I've been to. FOOD? Oh hell yes. There is nowhere else in the world that you would find foods this diverse in such a condensed area that is Queens. If Queens and Manhattan duked it out one on one based on food, I'm sorry. Queens has my vote. Travel? It is easily accessible by train, bus, car. With exception to that L.I.E or the Van Wyck during rush hour in the morning and from 4-7pm. Driving in to Queens is a breeze. People - As diverse as it gets without that tourists that you would most definitely run into literally in Manhattan. Skyscapers? No, but if that is all you want, Manhattan is a quick travel from here stranger. Cleanliness? It varies but I can say it is MUCH, MUCH better than some parts of the city where you can have a drink with subway rats within striking distance. NY? You EFFIN damn right it is. Review number 100 and I'm going to dedicate this to one of the more underappreciated boroughs here in NYC. After spending nearly my entire life in Brooklyn ( Bensonhurst if we're asking) the transition to another borough was pretty much along the same lines as moving to another planet. Here I'm after knowing nothing but Brooklyn and having lived four years in the foreign wasteland known as upstate new york, back in a place which, although was just a stones throw away from me, was very unfamiliar. It's been said before and I'll say it again the diversity in queens in unfathomable, it seems that every race and ethnicity on the planet has their own enclave in the borough of queens, and with it they bring their unadulterated cultures, and culinary traditions with them. One area in particular, jackson heights, it seems embodies this in a square mile more than any other place in the world. With Thai, indian/Pakistani/bengali, middle eastern, Nepalese, Tibetian, Vietnamese, korean, phillipino, chinese, columbian, Venezuelan, Mexican, Peruvian ( I could pretty much go on all day you get the idea ) restaurants a mere minutes walk away from each other, one could spend days if not weeks exploring the area exclusively and still not have tried everything this area has to offer. Both major nyc airports are located here effectively making this the first borough most foreigners set their eyes upon. The largest park in nyc ( nope not central park ) is located here in flushing Meadows corona park. Flushing, the largest Asian enclave in all of new York and maybe the United states is located here in queens and if you're into it, queens also has its own slightly less douchey hipster enclave quartered off in neighborhoods like long Island city and astoria as well.....although astoria has a pretty heavy greek and middle eastern presence in it....yay shwarma and hookah bars. Edit ( okay I lied I wouldn't even call these areas hipster or douchey for that matter, it's a young area that incorporates alot of the elements of what the neighborhood originally was that also has a pretty miniscule amount of "fusion restaurants" and bike parking, all good signs in my book ) Each borough though part of a collective know as new York city has its own distinct vibe and it's own merits. Queens to me at least is the undiscovered new york gem, that has so much to offer in terms of diversity and culture, that even the most adventurous, travel oriented, cultured, pretentious d bag snob could be giddy for months on end simply exploring the borough read more

The love of my life was born and raised in Flushing and Jackson Heights reminded me of some of the things I missed from London so it fit like a glove when I first moved here. I'm glad to say I was raised here. ALL forms of transportation run through queens so getting around is far from an issue :) If it is for you, you're probably just lazy ;) Dollar vans on almost every corner riiiiight next to the bodega who belongs to the papi always playing bachata! Queens is the largest of all the boroughs.. Queens is actually a fun exciting area for me too!!! Theres a lot of things to do... restaurants...parks...museums...malls...stadium...events..zoo..etc... there's many great places in queens...defiantly check these places out! I did! Go check out the The UnisphereThe symbol of Queens, the Unisphere is a giant globe in Flushing Meadows Park.... It's a great spot to hang out...walking...biking...skating...running...barbecuing and playing...the queens zoo is fun too...lots of fun animals... check out the bird house...so many different types of bird flying around over your heads... An area that i go to frequently whenever I'm in queen...Downtown Flushing....second largest Chinatown. It is worth worth a visit! great eats....peeking into herbalist shops... sipping up boba tea... and munching on great Chinese and other Asian eats....Don't miss the celebration of Lunar or Chinese New Year in Flushing every winter...You won't see the tourist crowds who go to New Year in Manhattan...but you will get an earful of firecrackers and an eyeful of dragon dancers....pretty cool! read more
