Wife and I live about an hour away, but get down in the area often enough. We have been chasing dive bars for several years now, and for some reason Boss Hawg's has failed to show in our searches!?!?!? Wife found it the day before we planned to head down (yesterday), and could not believe we had never heard of it. All I can say is this, disregard the current (3.3*) rating from a few mis-directed reviews. BH is a gem! Great food quality, large portions, solid drinks ($4.50 for a tall G & T....come-on man!!!! Any uppity-up establishment would charge twice that with less "flavor"!). Service, on this day Lionel, was spot-on! Yeah, the establishment is a little rough as she has been obviously loved for many years. But this is a dive bar!!!! Bench seats ripped but comfy, exterior windows are somewhat fogged and condensed inside. BUT, great atmosphere, and as mentioned food, drinks, service. I often have food here and am always very happy. The service is always attentive and check up on you regularly. Lot's of TV viewing options and the regular patrons are friendly. We've driven by here hundreds of times, decided to stop for an early morning breakfast. 8:00 am so the place was pretty empty except for a few porker players and a few having their first drink of the day. Anyway slid into a booth near the front door. I said slid, I was joking as both sides of the booth need new vinyl installed. The waitress was there in seconds with coffee, water and menus. After perusing the menu we both decided on bacon and eggs, hash browns and toast for Val and a muffin for me. Sooooo while we're waiting for breakfast we looked around the room. There must be at least 10 TV's around the room with a list of what game would be on a particular TV and the time. Hmmmmm must be a sports bar, duh! Anyway the food came out on warmed plates, perfectly cooked eggs and crispy bacon and potatoes. I mentioned the plates because not everyplace warms the plates, thus cold food shortly. Val said the coffee was delicious and the waitress kept the cup topped off. The food and service are excellent, the place needs some remodeling or just some repairs. One thing you might keep in mind is the bathroom is down a flight of stairs. We're going to try this place again soon, so I'll be updating the food portion soon. Whether you need a hearty breakfast with a Spanish coffee or want some delicious wings & beers to watch the game, this is your place! It has a great neighborhood vibe with a lot of regulars. Plenty of seating & an outside smoking area plus video poker, it's a win. I personally LOVE the food & highly recommend it. Went in on a Wednesday night, was super chill. Tables were filled in the main hall, music was good, and hockey was on. Server was great and was able to recommend some items which I ended up getting. Food is good, if you are craving a greasy burger this is the place! Ordered a bacon patty melt that was tasty and a bit salty for my liking, was on rye bread, got a salad with it but I'm sure the fries would've been a better choice. This is my new favorite neighborhood bar! The food is top notch (esp. for bar food) & the bartenders are pro status! Drinks made right, beers served fresh, even after blowing a keg! I may have not given this place a fair shot the first time. So here we go again. The service is still horrible. However I will concede that there was only one over-worked young lady working the floor; the place was packed. But for $24 dollars this is what I got: 1 Huge mug of IPA 1 Diet Coke 2 Philly cheese steak sandwiched 3 Orders of fries 1 Burger 1 Order of fried macaroni wedges. Again, the "service" was horrible. My complaint is that my server at Boss Hawgs wore a fake mesh mask. It is bedazzaled on the outside but is total mesh providing no protection as a mask. This type of mask is used by anti-vaxxer. This concerns me greatly because business's like this kill people. read more

This place was disgusting. The "regulars" were drunk, and obscene. One guy sat in my friends chair, then cause a scene when we asked him to get up and give my buddy his seat back. We told the bartender, who was the manager on duty, and he didnt do anything. That same guy later fell over in the bar, only to be helped up by his friends and then served another beer by the bartender. There were people smoking marijauna outside, in plain site. And the worst part is, me and some friends went their because we all bought a coupon from Google Offers good for $20 worth of food and drinks, and when we showed them the coupon on our phones, they said they wouldnt accept it unless we had the printed copy, even though it said directly on it to show the establishment your phone to redeem. I have already filed complaints with Google and The Better Business Bureau, and will be taking a complaint to OLCC Monday morning. I will never return to this dump of a place. read more

OK - I'm a total BBQ snob. I love the stuff. I still have dreams of sauce I had 20 years ago and carry deep resentment for lazy BBQ. This shit is good. I had the juicy pulled pork sammich. Not even the slightest bit dry and the sauce was splendid. It tasted almost marinara based. Nice and rich with yummy chunkies in it. I ended up sitting sat next to some Napoleon Dynamite looking dweeb who was playing THE most annoying video machine ever. You know that loud horn music that played whenever Fred Flintsone got scared or surprised or bonked on the head? This game played that about every 30 seconds. I just about offered the guy 5 bucks to stop playing until I finished lunch, but I didn't want it turning into some huge discussion that would allow my tasty sandwich to get cold, so I just dealt with it. Been wanting to get into this spot for awhile now, and last night was the night. Wanting to get out of the Sandy Hut, needing food, and wanting to see the rest of the game, I suggested Boss Hawg's. First, the parking lot experience was one of the stranger that I've had. There was construction going on, and cars were parked a bit chaotically. In front of us was a tow truck. Maybe he's towing? He just stopped. Then sat. Then started inching backwards. No reverse lights. Then he stopped. In the end, it was apparent that he wanted out, but he had no interest in communicating that to us. When we found our spot, there was a guy standing in the middle of it talking on his cell. As we made motions towards the spot, he didn't move. Only when it became necessary for his continued existence did he slide over a bit. After the game people were hooting and hollering in the dirt driveway, something common, but there was a surreal quality to the content. Okay. We got inside and pulled up to the bar. The place was crowded but not packed. We ordered a couple Miller Lites and got menus. I got the pulled pork sandwich, and Dave got the meatloaf dinner. People were friendly, and we got to talking to the dude next to us who made us order the Hawg Wings, actually a couple of pork ribs. They came out and were quite tasty. I felt the sauce needed a bit more spice. The sauce they used, and apparently the only available, tasted like a western North Carolina sauce. Ketchup, vinegar, and some sweet. It was good. I generally prefer a mustard sauce on my pulled pork, but the red worked well. The pulled pork was good. Some bark pieces, some juicy, a hearty sandwich with a nice mild smoke. Definitely very good for pub grub, and served with an enormous amount of tasty fries. Next to the pulled pork, Dave's meatloaf was disappointing. It tasted like a patty melt, more burger than anything. The mashers and texas toast were both good though. The beer selection is pretty good. They had Lagunitas IPA, Blue Moon, Mirror Pond, and Black Butte (I think) on tap, in addition to the macrobrew selection...not sure why Miller Lite just sounded right then. read more

I have had many a hangover breakfast here and will say that it never disappoints. On that note, their selection of Bloody Mary styles speaks for itself. If you're here for a game and/or dinner, there is definitely an abundance of televisions for whatever you're planning to watch. The food is very good and the service is even better, even while they're super busy! (The nachos are super huge and AWESOME) If you're into video poker there is a whole little cubby in the back with about 5 machines or so for you get your fix. All You Can Eat Taco Tuesday! This place happens to be one of my friend's favorite place. He's constantly nagging at me to try this place because he cannot stop raving about their ribs and how their HH menu is cheap w/great food selection. I finally decide to go and can now say this is one of the cheap eats near my home that i enjoy going to over & over again. They make one of the best bbq food for cheap! They have this rib dish on their HH that is to die for. Boss Hawg's deep fries it then season it lightly, along w/a side of bbq sauce for you to dip with. They also make great mac & cheese and chicken wings there that literally falls off the bones. Its so good you'll probably wanna suck on the bones! Its so hard to get cheap bbq these days & to find it on a HH menu is extremely rare! They have great drink specials and they make a decent bloody mary. The crowd is usually younger and crowded at night. Its a definitely bar scene style place. However, if you do the HH around the afternoon its not as crowded. I have driven past this place for years, and hadn't given it a second thought other than the sign is campy. Trying to explore more restaurants since I tend to find a place that I love and go there over and over, then always order the same thing. I was also looking for something different than the usual Portland haunts. Very happy that we checked this out Boss Hawg's. The Yelp reviews spoke highly of the BBQ, and it was definitely worth the visit. I was hoping for more variety in their BBQ offerings, but the main offering is ribs. The rest of the menu is more diverse than your usual bar fare, and much more than I expected from a sports bar. The ribs, though... YUM! Very smokey and fell right off the bone. The sauce is served on the side, and the meat is tasty with or without the sauce. The pound of ribs came with soup or salad, choice of potato, and a tiny side of coleslaw. Complete bargain at $8.95. I've been to other places renowned for their BBQ, paid twice as much, and wasn't as satisfied as I was with the ribs at Boss Hawg's. They pour strong drinks, and my margaritas were quite refreshing. Our server was a doll - very prompt service with a smile. Minor gripe is that if they have air conditioning, it is a pretty weak system. Fortunately in Portland the temperature rarely reaches the point where this would be a problem. Unfortunately we went on a sweltering day. There are TV screens on practically every wall in the place, and they have a shuffleboard and a few video games as well. Being a vegetarian, one probably wouldn't expect me to frequent this rowdy BBQ restaurant/bar... But I do (it's in my neighborhood if that explains it)! Friendly service among an obnoxious crowd and super loud music, they offer great Tuesday beer specials. It's only $4 for a huge, frosty 22 oz. mug of great beer. I usually get the Lagunitas. The Pasta Primavera Marinara is great. Giant portions are good for lunch the next day. They have great, cheap Happy Hour too. Go if you can stand really bad, really loud jukebox music, and smokiness.
