My lovely lady enjoying her burger

First night I came here with my friend we got Taylor as our bartender. What an awesome gal! She hooked my friend up with his first Jell-O shot and she let us have a sample of the Guiness nitros! The food here is pretty bomb. Although the next night I came back with my girlfriend, we got this blonde bartender who wasn't that great. Always staring at her phone and we had to basically flag her down to get any service. Perhaps it was an off night for her but man she was bad. But if it's a Taylor night expect a 5 star experience!

Love this neighborhood spot. The service is always friendly and welcoming, the ambiance is warm and inviting. Plus, I think they have a magician in the kitchen. We've bern here twice with four of us from the family and both times ordered a variety of items from their almost restaurant level menu. Each time, all of our food arrived at the same time, hot, and perfectly customized per our requests (no onion, extra dressing, etc).

Perfect local Irish dive with the best grub. I've been here on packed days, slow days and St. Paddy's Day! Great people and better food. We've had the Bangers and mashed, Shepherd's Pie, Curry, lamb stew and fish & chips. It's all damn good. And it's nice, dark and woody inside with some outside seating. Love this local Irish Pub!

A diamond in the rough. The clucks and fries are calling and they have your number! The bar is full of music and nice service. Only thing missing is karaoke.

The food here is excellent! Irish comfort food along with standard bar food offerings, but clearly prepared with quality ingredients, from scratch. The atmosphere is generally relaxed, with weekend nights getting appropriately raucous. They have live Irish music on some Friday nights, which is fun. If I have any complaints, it's that I don't personally care for sports, and they have three big tvs that are basically always showing three different games/sports talk. But hey, a lot of folks like it, so I just head to the patio or the pool table. The owners and their staff are great. It's obvious that they care about the people and the service they're providing. Overall, I'm stoked to have this spot in my neighborhood!

So...this place was unexpectedly good. We went at 4:30 pm to avoid the crowds, which worked out. I must say, our server (the bartender) was very friendly and attentive as well. There were four of us, and the food was delivered all at once and all were hot, like an army of cooks prepared each of our dishes so that they wouldn't cool down by the time it was delivered to our table. And the best thing is...all of the food we ordered was delicious. We did not have a single complaint, in fact, we loved it, and will definitely be going back there for some delicious food again soon. Thank you Whelan's for a good dinner. Thumbs up.

Had an amazing experience and meal at Whelan's! The inside has awesome decor and they have a lot of great whiskeys and scotches as well as a full bar and a good amount of beers on draft. We had their shepherd's pie which was out of this world!!! Incredibly delicious and savory, we thought we'd take some home but ended up eating the entire thing. We also ordered a weekly burger special that they had (they call it their Bob's Burgers specials) and it was very tasty and would definitely order their other burgers. We can't wait to come back and try their fish and chips and enjoy some of the local music that comes through!

Food is good, parking is non-existent. Customer service was good. I could have showed up on a slow night but it was okay.

The vibe was fun and welcoming, and it felt like a great place to hang out with friends. The spicy margaritas were definitely a highlight--$12 and really good, though they may have been a daily special. Either way, they were worth it. Overall, it was a great stop during our time in Portland and a fun place to relax with my besties.

I always want to like it more than I do. I always want to come in, look at the lovely downtown pub…read more(I don't bother with 21st Street), and say "you know what, it's about on par with anything I've seen in Boston, Hoboken, New York, Philly, Baltimore, or Chicago." I want to say it's on par with the better Northwest offerings like the Irish Heather in Vancouver, The Irish Times in Victoria, or Murphy's in Seattle. But I can't. Because every time I'm here I'm just reminded of all the things it isn't. The menu looks somewhat right on paper, but it's little things like the spice and bake on the sausage rolls, the fact that they won't give you curry and chips without ordering the whole chicken entree ordeal, the somewhat dry and mealy burger. Then there are the drinks: There's a Guinness on, but the Magners is in the bottle. And then there's the whole brewpub element that was introduced a few years ago that baffles me. There are so many breweries in town, and so many quality Irish breweries, that I have no idea why you'd brew a middling beer lineup of your own AND make an Irish stout and red, of all things. But the most disappointing part of The Kells is that it's all the worst parts of the pubs in cities I just mentioned without containing any of their finer points. Stripped of history, taplist, menu, and other comforts, it's just a place where suburbanites come into the city, get loud for a few hours, pay their few quid, and leave without doing much else in the area. Compared to the Leaky Roof, T.C. O'Leary's or the city's English pubs like the Rose and Thistle or Moon and Sixpence, The Kells seems detatched and at arm's length from anything. that might resemble a community. I've heard they've done (double-decker English) buses to Timbers and Thorns matches, and I hear they're basically propping up the city's St. Patrick's Day festivities, but there's something artificial to it. It's a shame. I know the founders came from Belfast and I know the family is still very much involved, but although the staff is always pleasant when I come in, there's very little about the place that makes me want to return. It doesn't repel me, but a pub should draw me in more than this one does.

The first thing you'll notice is the ample outdoor seating - perfect for enjoying a meal and/or drinks outside in nice weather, shaded by large trees. The vibe inside is cozy, with lots of stained wood and warm lighting. The front room has a fireplace, and the dark wood L-shaped bar is inviting. Decorating the walls are a large Jameson's Irish Whiskey mirror and a variety of photos, sayings, and Irish knickknacks. Absent the sound of a telltale accent, you won't know whether you're in Lake Oswego or Limerick. Somewhat hidden is a basement area with a TV, board games, shuffleboard, a dartboard, and mini-foosball table. There are a dozen or so beers on tap, including Guinness, of course. Pints are served in special Guinness glasses. Behind the bar are a nice selection of Scotch and Irish Whiskeys. Appetizer favorites include Bavarian Bangers (soft pretzel and banger sausage) and Pan Seared Brussel Sprouts. The menu includes staples (Fish N' Chips, Shepherd's Pie, Bangers & Mash, etc.) as well as a selection of sandwiches and burgers.
