My employer brings in Boston Chair Massage once a month for several 15 minute massages. While each masseuse has a slightly different style, I have had a really relaxing and positive experience every time. I went here for a little over 18 months, and I've experienced everything from a decent session to 'I want my money back.' The biggest advantage to this place is the internet booking which is handy to book an appointment on Tuesday night at 2AM, but it really doesn't replace speaking to someone on the phone. The owner herself is a therapist. She's invested decent money in decent tables (never saw hydraulic tables before) and nice decor. In the long time that I've been there, I have had to change therapists because they suddenly disappeared. A massage is something between a therapist and client, so decor or brand-names are low on my list, it's all about rapport and developing a relationship. The biggest drawback is the pricing. She's in Lexington, so she can charge top prices, so expect to get in the triple digits with some good to so-so therapists. read more

Essential Bodywork and Massage offers truly inspirational, centering, & rejuvenating massages. Essential Bodywork is a beautiful little massage spa in Lexington, with easy street parking. It has bright windows, a calming, very clean & cozy waiting area with herbal teas and water with glass mugs (which help the environment), and is beautifully yet simply decorated throughout --with National Geographic-type photos in the hallway, and stones lining the path to each massage room. I felt right at home. Once inside the room, it was dimly lit (as it should be), and felt really cozy. The table and blankets were so comfortable, and I was happy to find that I was warm enough since the table linens were heated, which is good since as my body relaxes, I tend to get cold. I know that the warmth also helps soften muscle tension. Maura was my massage therapist, and she was amazing! She was warm and welcoming. She asked me ahead of time -- not only about what I wanted her to focus on -- but also about how I wanted to feel at the end -- so I could weigh my vision with the end result. She was attentive to my tense areas, asked me ahead of time what kind of pressure I wanted, and checked in with me a few times about pressure, temperature of the room. She massaged my face, feet, and hands so well! Maura intuitively seemed to know what parts of me needed attention. I felt so relaxed, I fell into a light sleep, and awoke feeling so refreshed! She's a great massage therapist! By the way, it is completely worth it to sign up on their webpage (rather than call) for an appointment because you get emails for $10 or $20 off your massages! Incredible! And you can use your credit card, which is nice. They do have walk-in services, sometimes, very flexible hours -- including on Saturdays & Sundays -- and are open until 9:00 p.m. on weekdays. I'm sure all of the massage therapists who work at Essential Bodywork and Massage are wonderful, but I highly recommend Maura Meade Sperry, whose skillful massage techniques as well as her way of being are deeply healing. read more

I had a GREAT massage with Maura yesterday. It was my first full-body massage and Maura was very good about making me comfortable. When I first walked in, my impression was that the place was quiet and cozy. A small sitting area with instructions on signing in also had tea available for guests. Classical music and soft lighting made the environment nice and relaxing. Chris, the owner, came over within a few minutes of my arrival to greet me - she was friendly and welcoming. Maura, who I had requested specifically based on her experience/profile, was extremely warm and nice. She gave me a wonderful deep tissue massage and was responsive when I asked for a little more work on a specific spot on my back. It was a very relaxing hour and I felt great afterwards - I still feel good now and didn't experience any soreness at all. I really liked the environment - it was small, but in a cozy way...and very comfortable. Their beds are warm and soft and everything seems to be well kept and clean. They had moved and when I got there they were having internet/phone issues so the Verizon guy was there and there was just a small waiting room so it seemed a little chaotic. But I was able to book a same day massage, and used a Yelp coupon for $15 off, so it was great in a pinch. But I prefer a more spa like setting I guess. read more

[I wish there were half stars, I would've given them a 3.5, but I'm an optimist and a giver so 4 it is!] First and foremost, I will rate the actual massage. The masseuse I was originally booked with was sick, and I got Martha instead. She was very kind, asking me specifically what I wanted to work on, what I wanted to skip, my habits, etc etc. I told her I wanted a back/neck/shoulder deep tissue, and that I loved head massages. She started with a back massage, and honestly, at first I really didn't like it. A lot of it felt like just rubbing oil in, she kept pushing some awkward spots in my back and it wasn't all that comfortable. I get a lot of massages, so I know that it's not always a walk in the park getting those knots out, but it kind of seemed like she didn't know what she was doing. She pressed some spots really hard and didn't completely dissolve the knot, when I've had other masseuses use less pressure and kill the nasty bugger. Her pressure was also inconsistent - I was going to tell her to press harder but then she used her elbow and it was SO hard and I was going to tell her to go softer but then she changed and was TOO soft so I just gave up and didn't say anything. I'm sure she would've adjusted, but I didn't want to spend my whole massage directing her. It was bearable, so I just shut up and zoned out. However, then she flipped me over and got started on the head/scalp massage and the star rating doubled in my head!! Ahhhhh, I am sitting here grunting contently just thinking about it. To be honest, I'm not sure if she was extra skilled, or if I just extra love getting head and the even rarer face massage, but oh man, was I in heaven. It was far too short. I should've gotten the entire hour kneading my face until my eyebrows rubbed off. In the end, I left feeling really wonderful, mediocre back massage be damned! Okay, now the other stuff. -I came with a Groupon, and Martha was a doll! I wasn't able to print the whole groupon and I was running late so I just copied down the number and left. I know she probably had to do a bit of paperwork and filing and filling stuff out because of that but she gave me no attitude at all! Even before I tipped her 20% of the listed price [I know it is the biggest fear of groupon takers that people will tip on the groupon price], she still treated me wonderfully and that isn't always the case. Excellent customer service. Oh, and when I made my phone appointment, the woman on the phone warned me that google maps sometimes leads people astray and made sure i wouldn't get lost and be late. Nice touch! -The location was about 20 minutes away from me [Allston], which is pretty far in my opinion, but FREE street parking!! The building was cute, very very small, and when I was in my massage room, I could hear the people in the front talking. They weren't even being really loud, I think the walls are just thin. Doesn't bother me, but I know some people like siiiilence. -That table was by far the most comfortable table I have ever laid on. Heated, super soft sheets, face and behind the knee padding that felt like wonderful airy pockets of awesomeness. -They offer free tea and water in front. read more

The combination of a relaxing space and excellent massage will keep me coming back. I arrived at Essential Massage early and got to enjoy their welcoming seating area. Although the noise of Mass Ave. was evident, the soothing music, comfortable chairs and wonderful complimentary tea selection made the time pass quickly. I had a massage with Kristina. After a quick chat about my problem areas, I slipped onto the plushest massage table I have ever experienced: cushioned surface, heated blanket and comfortable bolster to support my legs. Right away, I appreciated how Kristina was able to precisely address my problem areas. I kept thinking, "Wow, how does Kristina know that's exactly the spot I've had pain/tightness?". I've had many massages in many different countries, and the massage I received from Maura tonight was one of the top 5 of my life. She processed everything I told her I needed/wanted and converted it into reality. I could tell she was responding to feedback from my body along the way and making adjustments accordingly. I was in a code-red stress situation when I walked in, and my entire body was heaving one giant, languid sigh on the way out. It's been an hour and a half, and I'm still recovering--in a good way. I can only speak to Maura as a therapist, but in general I also loved the atmosphere of the studio. It's clear the management put a lot of thought into many tiny details that add up to create an aura of relaxation and peace. Kudos. I'd pay good money to go here again. read more

Ok, so this is a place to get a massage when you really 'need a massage.' Essential is in Lexington right on the Arlington line on Mass Ave. So it's really not that far folks. These people are professionals, and they only do massage and bodywork here, unlike other spas where the person giving you a massage is also gonna wax your "cha-cha" later. It is a small quiet space, with two massage rooms, and a cute front waiting area with relaxing tools, books and hot tea to enjoy. I would highly recommend Laura, who really took the time to figure out my pain issue, and work out the kinks. I left feeling super relaxed and physically better. My bf who suffers from serious, painful bouts of sciatica also went here, and his sciatica has been virtually non-existent since. This was after flings with a chiropractor and PT's. If you want to utilize massage for your overall health and well-being, it's best to go to a place that specializes only in the practice, and this place does the job. Massages for one hour run $90, but they send you lots of $10 off coupons and special deals. Highly worth the trip just for relaxation, or for serious bodywork. GO! read more

I bought a Groupon for Essenstial Bodywork and Massage and finally used it today. It is the only massage place I've ever known to be open on Sundays which is convenient. It is a very small place but cozy. Kristina was my masseuse. She was very nice and accommodating. I asked her to focus on my back and neck and she did just that. Before I knew it, I was asleep (I woke myself up with my snoring). When I asked her to use a little less pressure, she listened. I liked the fact that the massage was customized just for me. I also liked that she used the whole hour for my massage compared to other places I've been where I have been short-changed by 5 or 10 minutes. If you think you would like a more intimate, quiet place to get a massage, this may be the place for you. read more
