O. M. G. Fong's Massage Therapy is a gem of a find in Boston Chinatown. Over the years I have gradually been doing some major damage to my back via working late hours and tolerating the stress at work. I've gotten many, many massages over the years to help relieve the dull and nagging pain I have in my neck and upper back. I have a Massage Envy subscription (which I just terminated today) plus I go to a number of Chinese and Thai massage places to supplement. When I found Fong's Massage Therapy I was looking for the highest rated Yelp! business in Boston Chinatown... And then it was history... I actually just showed up randomly on a Sunday to see if I could get a session in. First, I was expecting a store front on the main level of Washington Street but it's actually in an office building of sorts where you have to buzz in. There's no major signage for Fong's except for the buzzer label. The office is nice and very comfortable (nice cool temperature, soothing lighting and music and comfy BarcaLoungers for waiting. I didn't have an appointment but Kathy was available. I didn't realize it was cash only so I said I would come back after going to the ATM. However Kathy offered to perform the treatment and then I could go get cash but just leave my ID. I was like wow! And I wasn't sure what to do so I ended up doing what she suggested. The first session was amazing. Kathy basically checks out what's wrong and then administers the appropriate treatment. The method here is not like some of the many (excellent) massage therapists employ where there's almost a set sequencing of therapy. I was really tight so Kathy walked on me first to loosen me up. And then the remainder of the session was pretty intense--I usually fall asleep during no my massage therapy sessions but the pain was so intense and body work so deep that I couldn't fall asleep! The first session was so good that I set up an appointment for about 10 days later. During my second session I had gua-sha (spooning) done. This is where Kathy too lo a Chinese soup spoon and "scraped" it all over my back, neck and arms. Wow, I felt really good afterwards. Fong also checked me out as Kathy saw that I had a mountain of a knot on my back. Fong said there was a misalignment and that an adjustment would be helpful. I wasn't mentally ready to get adjusted then but I am today (third session). I am waiting for my treatment and I am hearing the "screams" of pain coming from the patient currently being treated. This review is for Jenny. My second visit confirmed this was the best massage I have ever received. I try to get a massage once a month due to my horrible posture at work. Per other reviews, this is NOT a relaxing massage. This is a "let's get every single knot out, ow, ow, ouuuch, I think I may cry...pause....ahhhh" massage. Jenny is very sweet and surprisingly strong! She uses her hands, forearms, elbows and even her knees (!) to massage out those stubborn knots. Don't be thrown off by the building. You have to be buzzed in - even when you get inside, the corridor/elevator are a tad dark and small. Even inside Fong's, the walls are thin - you can hear the work being done on the building, the phone ringing, etc. But let's be serious, you're not there to relax. You're there to have those horrible knots removed from your cramped and tired muscles. When I walked out of the building, I felt like 10 pounds had been lifted off of my shoulders. Seriously. I'm used to getting massages at random Chinatowns throughout the country - it's usually Reflexology at $35-$40 a pop, but this time I REALLY needed help with my back. I was desperate, and no random massage would do - my lower back had been killing me, and my shoulder tension didn't let me sleep the night before. Yelp led me to Ms Fongs, and Jenny took care of my massage needs with just an hour's notice! She actually asked what was bothering me before we started (which is a first for me! Usually the masseuse just starts to go to town on me without a peep from my end), and she commented that my back was super tense. I literally get massages monthly, but given how tense my back was, Jenny thought I'd never been massaged. Seriously, I needed help! Then... Jenny went to town. I can tolerate huge amounts of pain, but she literally had me gasping in pain as she WORKED my back and my calves out. She climbed on top of me, stepped on my back, used elbows and knees and toes and every part of her body to make the tension leave my body. She also told me I was super dehydrated and needed to drink more water. This is NOT a relaxing massage, but it was exactly what I needed! TOTALLY WORTH IT. read more

I don't normally post Yelp reviews (I just lurk and read reviews of delicious food) but I HAD TO LEAVE ONE FOR MS. FONG. She is amazing - I have a desk job and I'm constantly hunched over and have a plethora of back/shoulders/neck/hips issues that no masseuse has ever been able to fix. Just by examining my back, Ms. Fong was able to tell that my right hand had been slowly going numb. I thought I had early carpal tunnel and being a broke twentysomething post-grad responsibly decided to ignore it (and I never mentioned it to her). She was able to fix it by gua sha (scraping) which I thought was very soothing, but she said that most of her clients end up crying in pain. I have a high pain tolerance, so be prepared if you do not! Even though I only had enough cash on me for the deep tissue massage, she was incredibly kind and adjusted my back/neck for free as a one-time thing. I am very grateful because I did not know how much pain I was in until it was gone. She also stepped on my back and cracked it. Ms. Fong knew exactly where to push and dig into knots (she has very strong hands! and I was her 10 client that day!) and I could tell from chatting with her that she cares very deeply about her clients' health and is a genuinely kind person. I chatted with Susan before my appointment with Ms. Fong and she is friendly and hilarious, I also talked to her other student Cathy and Cathy said that they focus on helping people 'heal' which I found to very accurate. Been to massages in Vail, Park City, Hong Kong, Thailand (the normal kind), Hong Kong, China, Japan, Korea, and the fact is Fong is equally as good in most every way and far superior in others. Miss Fong is truly a miracle worker. I have struggled with chronic pain for several years now, and she has changed my life! She is extremely gifted and a true expert. I love seeing her too because she has a great sense of humor and our sessions are pretty funny despite the intense body work. I would love to rate her business as five stars, however, the one downside is a certain employee who solicits yelp reviews and demands tips despite a preexisting agreement between myself and Fong (who is the owner) that my tip would not be accepted. GO HERE NOW!! I received the BEST MASSAGE OF MY LIFE from Ms. Fong. She is truly skilled at what she does. She was able to get rid of all the knots and tension in my body. She knew where I was having pain, without me telling her, by just feeling the area. I was having neck pain for the past couple of weeks and it was like I was not only massaged by it even felt like my spine was adjusted by her. She also palpated my abdomen and could tell I had digestive issues. Ms. Fong is very knowledgeable and even gave me advice and helpful information about what I should be doing at home for my stomach, neck and back as well as other ailments I had been experiencing. Ms. Fong: the (wo)man, the myth, the legend. I have gotten a few massages before and have always come out feeling like the masseuse didn't really do much. Not so here. However, a Fong massage is not for the feint of heart. She started off asking me where my problem areas are (neck, upper back, shoulders) she then got to work, going right for the problem areas (it really hurt), and cracking my back. about 5 minutes in she remarked about how tight my shoulders and neck were, and asked if I would mind if she stood on my back. I hesitantly agreed, and she hopped on up. It was awesome, but also pretty painful. Then she stood on my upper back and hopped! I heard the loudest series of cracks ever! I made her laugh when I let out a small scream. She then did work on my back with her hands, which, man, is she strong. She mercilessly sought out painful spots that I didn't even know I had. She adjusted my neck, and then had me lay on my side. She twisted my body on both sides and there were lots of cracks. Then she cracked all of my fingers and wrists. She had me sit up, and made me crack a few other ways. She then examined my spine, and was not pleased with something, and had me lay back down. She twisted my leg around until I heard my hip pop, she then said "better" Honestly, since last night, I feel a lot looser. She really cares, and puts in a TON of effort. I went to see Fong after one of my gym buddies recommended her, and overall was quite pleased. She is extremely knowledgeable and honed in on my problem right away (tight, sore shoulder) and even pointed out other issues that I hadn't mentioned. As others have stated, her massages are not for the faint of heard. She identified a lot of scar tissue in my muscles, and recommended Gua Sha- a scraping technique that uses a spoon to increase blood flow and healing- and it was PAINFUL! I also bruise easily, so the next 5 days my back looked as though I had been severely beaten. I would say that it helped a bit, but was too painful for me to do again. Overall, I highly recommend Fong massage therapy, but be careful of the spoon technique if you're sensitive. read more

I'm writing this review a little late. OK, so a lot late. I was in Boston for a couple of days back in March, but really really wanted to write a review for Kathy! I visit a chiropractor on a regular basis at home, and having been travelling for a few weeks my back/neck was feeling the lack of love. Like other reviewers, these massages are not for the faint hearted. I think I actually screamed a few times - but it was oh so worth it! I had the best nights sleep I'd had in weeks, and woke up feeling amazing. At one stage, Kathy wasn't sure about something in my arm & had Ms Fong check it out. This was not just your normal dig your hands in, don't know what I'm doing medically, I'll just try everywhere massage you find in shopping centres etc. She really focused on what needed work as well as explaining everything as required. AMAZING. Made an appointments for my mom, sister, and I to get foot massages today. The staff was extremely friendly and took the time to explain what they noticed during their massages. They explained which parts of our body were tight, potential reasons why, and how to remedy them in our day-to-day lives. I asked for a strong massage and was not disappointed. In addition, they squeezed in a body adjustment for my sister who needed a back alignment. The women who work here are hard working and honest about what they do. This was the worst massage I have ever had. I saw the shining reviews and thought this would be a good place to check out. I was wrong. I had Jenny as my therapist. She is well-meaning, but has absolutely no perception of how the person is feeling while she is massaging them and no feel for where the knots even are. I have had good deep massages before, but this was nothing like those. When she stood on me she had no control of the force she was applying. It was just pressure. It felt like she was hesitating as she stood there, moved a foot around, and then climbed off a few minutes later. Throughout the massage she pretty much just puts a lot of force into your back/shoulder muscles and thinks it is a good thing. There is no systematic order in the areas massaged so certain spots get more tight than they were before the massage because you end up locking up to prevent muscular damage. You shouldn't have to apply ice to yourself after a massage. That is called trauma. I walked out of there feeling like I had been in a car accident. There is a right way to apply deep pressure along the right points and work knots out because I've had it done before. Instead I am still reeling from the pain days later and feel really horrible. The worst part is that you are paying $70 for this. If I wanted to get beat up there are easier and cheaper ways to do it. Because seriously that is all you are paying for. Also she did not work on my legs past a few minutes, focusing all her time on digging into my back. I think she is well-meaning but I don't think this is a good place at all to go for a massage. I've been to Fong many times recommended by my mom, and my God, Fong can do it all! She knows the anatomy very well, bone structure, how to loosen muscles, crack bones, what area needs help, can recommend how to fix and repair! Kathy was great! Friendly, calculated and skilled. If you're hoping for a relaxing massage, don't go here. This is for relief, which takes a little pain and I feel SO relieved. Kathy asked if a trainee could join to simultaneously massage my legs while Kathy focused on my upper body at no extra cost except for the tip. I agreed. The trainee was decent but was less skilled and a little rushed (as expected). 3 stars for the just OK leg massage but 5 stars for Kathy. I'm sure the trainee will be excellent in no time. read more

I come here EVERY time I come home to Boston (I live in New York City) because I haven't found anyone other massage therapist who comes close to their level. I have chronic neck pain and it always is much better after a trip here (if I lived in Boston and could visit regularly, I'm sure it would be fixed). Once again, I had a problem and Kathy at Mrs Fong had the solution. Mind you: this is not for the feint of heart. Woke up with a terrible knot/kink in my neck - so painful when I moved certain ways I saw stars. I booked a 30-min massage before work cause I just needed it stretched out a bit to be less painful. Kathy ended up doing 15 min massage and 15 mins of spooning. Though its pretty intense and leaves you bruised, I woke up today 90% better and almost no pain. Amazing results once again. read more

I'm a working musician who's played guitar professionally for 35 years. Fong has made chronic neck, shoulder and hip pain disappear better than accupuncture, physical therapy and heat/ice. I've had many hard, healing type massages on my very active, screwed up body and find Fong to be waaaay above EVERYONE else!! I now only go to Fong. Cannot recommend Fong enough. Outstanding. This the rare masseuse where they ask you first where you have issues. They seem to care and give lots of advice about Chinese medicine which I found interesting I have a high pain tolerance (for a guy), and this deep tissue with a capital t. They really work on your knots, walk on your back, and find all the right spots. There aren't a lot of frills with hot towels etc the emphasis is squarely on therapy, as it should be. read more

Had back pain for 7 years and one day I said no more. I am sick of this after seeing lots of therapists and chiropractic services. I looked at reviews on yelp looking for good reviews but as you can see here Fong reviews were on another level. I went to see Cathy and she and Ms Fong suggested Gua sua. It was painful for sure but Cathy said the most remarkable thing at the end. She said "we made lots of progress today you are fixed but come back before you are in so much pain". In other words no need to come back every week for 6 months. She was all about healing me and not money. I know this sounds dramatic but they are miracle workers or as close as you can get. Fong has been amazing in helping me with shoulder/neck/upper chest tightness. Combination of poor posture and imbalances from lifting weights has done me in and I was feeling desperate especially after trying so many different body workers and modalities. I went to Fong's because of all the Yelp reviews, and I was skeptical because I have only ever gone to the "nicer" spas in back bay (but have always come out with the same knots in my back). The second I came out of Fong's, I felt like someone just lifted 20 pounds off my back and shoulders. SHE IS EFFING AMAZING. She is ruthless and will make you want to run away at some points, but it was worth every stifled scream I had, and every penny I paid. $70/hr is so reasonable, and I would have gladly shelled out more for the service I received. Don't be turned off by the neighborhood, this place is a GEM. read more

This was a reminder of the difference between massage therapists who are licensed and well trained and others who figure it out themselves. I didn't get Fong but one of the other 2 therapists who said Fong trained her. I came in last minute with a specific issue to work on. I was asked about it but the lady then clearly just proceeded to her usual routine. She was putting A LOT of pressure. This was the most painful massage I had ever had. Unfortunately it didn't offer any relief except for the fact the massage ended. The following week I saw a LMT and a chiropractor and both were very effective right away, very to the point and clearly understood the muscle map. I felt relief after those appointments. I just felt lucky that my spine was not actually damaged from the back walking. read more

I absolutely love this place ! If anyone ever gives it a poor review, it is probably because, they think they are coming here to relax. You come here to help relieve your injuries ! Back in high school, I was on the varsity team, and we were heading for states. After leaving high school. I didn't realize how much damage I did to my lower back and body. Heading off to college, and adding more stress on my load and work on top of that. It is when I noticed I had started to have problems walking. I went to the doctors, and they had said it wasn't a spine injury ( lucky me ! ) But it was an issue with my skeletal muscle. They recommended me going back into working out, So I was working with personal trainers, and still, there were many days of the week where I could not stand, and I was on the floor in pain. I went to a chiropractor , however all they did was snap me into place.. but the pain would still consist.. and let me tell you , it was pretty painful ! I thought I was going to lose my ability to walk. So I had finally given up , especially my insurance refused to cover all my meetings with the chiropractor . So I tried it here, and met Kathy . Oh . My . Goodness. After the first meeting, she apologized, for my future soreness. I didn't get what she met until the next day . But I had slept for the first time, so well ! I didn't care if I was sore. I knew it was working. She talked to me about my health, recommendations, and things I didn't know I was doing wrong. She really helped me to get back on my feet literally, I am not slouching like I use to anymore. I am walking up right. My body can fully function like it use to, next week will be my last session I believe, it's heart breaking. But I am definitely trying to come back at least once a month ! This place is like someone mentioned before, it is not for the feint of the heart ! You are here to release the pain . Not be pampered ! Master Fong is kind and extremely knowledgeable about the body. I have never had a massage where the masseuse steps on your back (as she hangs onto ceiling rods). She has adjusted my neck a few times, leaving me feeling relaxed and relieved. I'm a muscular girl and have had trouble in the past with finding a masseuse who can really give me a deep tissue massage. If you're more frail... I would suggest you request a different massage with the other masseuse. I'm happy to say that Master Fong is my go-to from now on:) read more
