My wife and I met our tour guide, Daniel at the Ritz Carlton Hotel this morning. Cambridge Historical Tours was recommended to us by the concierge at the Ritz. What a great tour we had! Daniel was most knowledgeable not only about the area but also about the facts of the American Revolution and the key "players" in the Boston area. This was an incredible tour (nothing cheesy or "touristy" about it). We opted for the private tour of the Freedom Trail, and it was worth every penny. This was by far the highlight of our trip! We learned so much about Boston's unique history as well as getting the lay of the land (this was our first time to the city). Julia Clark was our tour guide, and her expertise as well as her love for Boston, made the tour educational and entertaining. Her background in history and her presentation skills made her the ideal guide. She made the tour structured, but also allowed flexibility for us to make impromptu stops for coffee or souvenirs- we had our kids with us ;) She wanted the experience to be as tailored to our needs as possible. Went on the ghost tour around Harvard, I can't day enough about how amazing this was. If you aren't 100% sure, just do it. Read this review and just go. Our guide was informative and amazing, very good projection voice and we got lucky and had a smallish group that listened and understood his witty humor. The super depressing stories were followed up with something light hearted which was much appreciated. The tour isn't A LOT of walking as more as it is story telling, and public disclaimer, no you do not see ghosts. You do end in a creepy cemetery right around the corner from where you started. Bathrooms can be found at the cvs across the street, 2nd floor back right. Or in the bookstore, second floor to the right. Anyways back to the tour. The tour was historic and spooky at the same time. It had me thinking about the stories over and over. I definitely have googled a few. Just go do the tour, I promise you wont regret it. read more

You know you are being led around Harvard Square and Harvard Yard by true history buffs when they cheerfully wear 19th century threads in 90-degree weather and don't let the humidity get them down. It does not matter if you're new to Greater Boston or a longtime resident. These tours~developed and staffed by actors who really know their trivia~are a fun way to spend an hour or two in 'the Yahd.' Especially good was our tour guide who dressed up like Professor William James during his Amazon odyssey days. (Yes, he wore a pith helmet.) If you love history and just want the *fun* experience of learning about places you thought you knew everything about from people who obviously love what they do, sign up for a tour or two and wear your moustachioed tour sticker with pride! What a great tour! A friend of a friend started this company a few months ago. I was reluctant to check it out, as I've lived around Boston my whole life and rarely learn anything new on tours, and I'd seen those campy Harvard tours a million times. This wasn't campy. It was well researched, well written content by a guy who really seemed to know his stuff and appeared really comfortable in his own skin. I forget his character name, but he said his name was Daniel at the end. For a start-up that just started a few months ago, I was genuinely surprised at how good this tour was. It was as if they'd already worked out their kinks and had been doing this tour for years. I'd highly recommend this tour to anyone who likes history or has an interest in Cambridge past terrible puns about Harvard. read more

I would recommend this tour to anyone! I am so glad I went. You get more than your monies worth. I mean $15 for a two hour tour! I paid twice that for a 80 min walking tour in Boston the day before. This one was much more entertaining and interesting! My guide was well versed in the history and told stories not just facts. I had "Frederick Hastings Rindge" but I am sure they are all just as good. My friend and I originally bought tickets for the 90 min tour. We wanted to continue on the last 30 minutes and there was no hassle at all. We just gave our guide the three more dollars and were able to continue on without skipping a beat. You should go ahead a get the 2 hour ticket, trust me you will want to stay. The costume really did enhance the tour and when combined with the old architecture really bring the stories to life. If you are planning on spending the day in Cambridge I highly suggest this tour. You get to see all of the important sites in one activity. read more

I've lived in Boston for twelve years. I hate looking like a tourist, but my mom bought a groupon and I was willing to endure it for her. I had to wear a "hi! I'm a dopey tourist!" sticker on my shirt. I was so ready to be unimpressed. I was so pleasantly surprised! Our guide, "Frederick Rindge," was completely adorable, obviously knowledgeable, and immanently entertaining. This is the kind of tour you want to take because it's full of personal details (of the people being highlighted and the sq itself) and makes history immediate and relevant, which is the best way, imo, to get people interested. The tour itself takes a nice path through the square, past a couple of the main residences (each with good and/or humorous stories), past that quirky circular building about which everyone in Boston/Cambridge wonders but is too afraid to ask, past the iconic Harvard Yard, and out to the Cambridge Common. There's more on the tour, though, and it's all fun! I feel like the ending leaves you at such a point that you're not likely to get actually lost, but you can get that 'fun lost' where you're still essentially near everything you need to be but can discover the small, interesting things that just can't be covered in a comprehensive tour. Think of the tour as your 200 level course. Fun, informative, and whetting your appetite. Think of getting lost as your 700 level course. Challenging, fun, and totally worthwhile. I really recommend this tour to...yeah, I kind of cringe to say it, anyone. Unless you're a member of the Cambridge Historical Society, you'll learn something on this tour. And even if you're jaded and learn nothing new because you knew it all when you were five, well, I guarantee you'll be entertained by Mr. Rindge. read more

My first Yelp review, which seems appropriate since I took advantage of a Yelp deal for this discounted tour. I took a Friday night Ghost Tour with a friend visiting from LA, accompanied by another small group also vacationing from SoCal. Our tour was led by Leonora Piper, a 20th century trance medium, and accompanied by Richard Henry Dana Jr. We happened to be Leonora's first guided ghost tour, and she was great- a good story teller, historically knowledgeable, engaging and funny. (turns out, she regularly does daytime historic tours, so she was no rookie) Our 90 minute tour led us through Harvard Square, Harvard Yard and ended appropriately at the Old Burying Ground. We made ~10 stops on our walking tour, and were treated to a different 'ghost' story, some included murder and mysterious deaths. It's part story-telling, theater and history lesson. I thought is was entirely interesting, entertaining, educational and fun. If that's your thing, I'd recommend this tour. If you're looking for Spooky World, you'll probably leave disappointed. read more
