I scheduled a blow out for the morning of my birthday and wrote that as a note in the comments. I was greeted brusquely by Janee with "are you Alexandra?" No "have you been here before? Would you like something to drink? Do you need to go to the bathroom? Happy birthday!" Etc... I had booked an extra 10 minute scalp massage so when I glanced at my watch as I sat in the shampoo bowl I noticed it was 10:03. She shampooed my hair and then lightly layed her index fingers over my forehead (?) then conditioned my hair, rinsed and wrapped a towel around my hair and when I sat up my watch said 10:09 so I figured she had forgot about the massage. We discussed that I wanted big bouncy blow out waves but I stated my hair didn't hold a curl well so it was ok if the curls were a little tighter. She then turned me away from the mirror for about 25 minutes and when she turned me around I had tight Shirley temple-esque curls. I instinctively reached up to touch them and she said offered half heartedly to "run her fingers through my curls" which I stated I could do on my own. When I went to check out, I clarified the extra charge for the scalp massage since it had been so brief and she was clearly irritated, but the other staff person said the charge could be taken off. The sign by the register suggested $12 as a tip if you "liked it " seeing as I DISLIKED it, I added a $10 tip to which she rolled her eyes at me and still included the charge for the "massage" which I awkwardly had to correct a second time. By the time I finally paid I was shaking- I felt so uncomfortable, frustrated and irritated and sad that my birthday was starting out on such a bad note. Needless to say, I won't be back. read more

I want to share my experience because although my appointment didn't go exactly as I hoped, it showed me the type of people and business this location has. I had booked a style for my wedding day, and unfortunately, the look I was going for wasn't able to be achieved. But what really stood out was how much Janee cared. She could see how important this day was for me, and even though it was difficult to get the style right, she did everything she could to make sure I walked out feeling supported. She was apologetic, empathetic, and genuinely wanted me to leave happy. When it came time to pay, she even went above and beyond to take care of me, not because she had to, but because she cared more about me as a person than just the transaction. As a business owner myself, I know things don't always go perfectly, but what matters most is how we treat people when they don't. That's exactly why I will continue to recommend this location. I booked an appointment for a blow out roughly a week in advance for my wedding anniversary, confirmed with their automated text message that I would be there. I later get a call requesting a deposit...? Im in the middle of something, thought they were also calling to confirm the appointment (whatever that's fine)--however, also very annoying. I inform the lady I can't in the moment (as I stated I was preoccupied, away from my purse etc). She replied not a problem, can you just get it to us by Friday? Sure, NP. I had a missed call/voicemail today (Thursday) requesting the deposit ..."we called yesterday and still awaiting the deposit" (see screen shot). It honestly had slipped my mind. However, when you book your appointment, there is zero detail regarding that, no mention they will call to ask for that and there is NO option to put your card on file for the service. Full disclosure, would have zero problem paying a deposit. Most places that provide services for hair, nails, glam etc do. The woman (different individual from the first call) essentially left a voicemail as if I was inconveniencing HER and my lack of the $25 deposit, basically gives an ultimatum-- "pay this before your appointment or you risk losing your appointment". Make that make sense? I'm already confirmed my appointment, twice, I told the woman the first time it was my wedding anniversary so was really excited to try their salon for a blow out... so at this point, I called, cancelled the appointment and took my business down the street. You lose a client, you lose at least $80 ($60 for blowout + tip). Overall, just an unfortunate experience. read more

I used to love this place. I started with the original owners and this place was heaven back then. I tried with the new owner, wasn't horrible me but it definitely had declined in quality. Fast forward 4 years, I'm home for a visit and need a blow out for a family function. I think, I'll give it a try. Oh. My. Gosh. The quality and feel of this place should have told me the outcome but silly me didn't want to judge. I should have. I have long hair. I get a blowout every week and they use a round brush. I travel a lot and almost always use blow dry bars. NJ, PA, SoCal, OH, NY. Often having stylists for the first time and yup you guessed it, round brush blow out with no issues. The young lady did a mediocre shampoo. I had to ask for a second shampoo. I paid for a fusio dose conditioner and she chose what I would receive instead of asking which I would like to have (you know since I'm the one paying). She proceeds to saturate my hair with product to the point it's dropping all over me. When I mention it may be too much product she explains what it does. I state I use the product at home just far far less. I watch the stylist next to her using product and like most. A few pumps of spray and works it through. I decide to be quiet because she is kind but nervous. As she begins to blow dry my hair I realize I'm in for it. She finger combs my hair to detangle and goes at my hair like it's her first blow dry. We switch to the comb attachment and it gets worst. She hit me in the head so many times I thought I would lose my marbles! A usual blow dry for me is 15 minutes max. We are at the 45 minute mark and I have a big frizzy mess of partially straight hair that is damp at the roots. As I try to explain it she goes to another stylist who then questions me as if I'm in the wrong for asking for a round brush blow out. I called it. Told her to cash me out and I would go elsewhere. In looking at the style and demeanor of the other stylist, I would not even consider letting anyone else there fix it. This used to be a premium blow dry bar. I can't describe what it is now without sounding degrading and mean. It's that bad. You cannot function in a diverse community, accept patronage from diverse clients and not have skilled workers to meet the demand. $95 dollars later and I walked out with two braids that I did myself. First time at this salon to get a blow out style for a special event. I wish I could be more positive since I like to support local businesses. My stylist was very nice but seemed like she really had no idea what she was doing. I asked for volume and extra hold since my hair is very fine, and she reassured me that's what she'd give me. Instead I got curls with very little volume, and my style was already falling flat when I was paying and going out the door. By the time I got home 30 min later, you could barely tell I had anything done to my hair. The whole service took under 30 min, and frankly, was something I could have done myself at home. She did a wash, basic blow dry, a few curls with a curling iron and sprayed it with a light hold spray. I've had blow outs before that have definitely been much more solid and lasted days, so this was just like throwing money down the drain. read more

I had a great appointment with Alandria. She was quick, professional, and took great care of my hair. I have bleach damaged hair that tangles easily. I came in for a blow out after not washing/detangling my hair very well for a while (shoulder injury) and she was very professional about the situation. The wash was great. I did not pay for a scalp massage but my scalp was still thoroughly cleaned. The blowout itself was perfect. I have longer thick hair and it came out shiny with big bouncy curls in exactly one hour. I came here on two different occasions to get my hair done and it wasn't the best but it also wasn't the worst also. The place is located in downtown area near Adams Point in Oakland. Like every other business in Oakland, it is hard to find parking here, so make sure you leave enough time to find parking and make it to your appointment on time. I have always been able to get an appointment online fairly easy and you can even book online which is great. The staff here are all pretty nice and some are more talkative than others. I always feel that they take their time which is great. I guess the 3 stars comes from the final product, like I said, not great but not the best. I usually come here to get a blow out and my hair curled (since I hate doing it myself) but doesn't seem to last super long. Ok so first off I'm a hairstylist myself and am so pleased with the service Salma gave me!! I recently had back surgery and couldn't wash my own hair in the shower like how I usually do. I was desperate for a shampoo blow dry and found this spot after googling. I was able to get an appointment same day and the results Salma gave me were EXACTLY what I wanted and more!! Salma was super attentive when it came to the consultation and I felt like she heard and understood exactly what I wanted and executed it perfectly. She was super sweet and just the absolute BEST! This really is as great of a place as it sounds. I had a hair appointment this morning and it's one of the best experiences I have had. My appointment was at 9am and not too long after I got there Jasmine was there to get going on my hair. She was very gentle and kind. It was a really nice experience overall. The shop definitely has a family/friendly vibe going on there that I really like and I think the main reason is because of Karen who is very inviting and bubbly to people. The experience was good, the price isn't too bad, I can definitely see me coming here more often. And Jasmine worked so quick when she was doing my hair, under 2 hours! 5 stars all around :) read more

Brides beware - do not come here for your big day! I had the most horrific experience. I made my appointments months in advance as a bridal party. I came in a week prior to book the stylists we wanted because this place has a reputation of moving up receptionists to stylists and they usually aren't very good. So wanted to make sure we didn't have to deal with that. I made this very clear to the receptionist who helped me and she said it was not a problem. I called the night prior to confirm and 2 people who they booked for me apparently quit and they never told me I no longer had those appointments! So I sent 2 people to a different salon and confirmed who we had again - the night before. We went in the day of and all our stylists were switched around and we had both the people that we asked NOT to specifically have. It was too late to switch back because they already booked the other people we requested. We started the appointments and the newer girl did one of my bridesmaids hair. Simple, basic curls and she was taking foooorrever. I asked her much longer she was going to be as she had an appointment after her and we had to leave to make-up appointments. She kept saying a few minutes. 30 minutes later I had to leave my bridesmaid because I was already late to my makeup appointment (I was the bride). I had left a deposit for all my appointments and the receptionist couldn't figure out to deduct the $240 I already paid and kept telling me I owed over $400 (I should have owed $100). I finally had to leave because I was late and asked her to ask the manager to just settle bill with me as she was not there. I leave and the newbie doing my friends hair finally finishes and then starts my next bridesmaids hair super late so now she is going to be late for her makeup appointment. Bridesmaid said don't wash my hair and just curl because we are super late. To top it off, we had to redo both those girls hair because the job was so terrible!!!! Then they have the nerve to charge me late fees for both of them! Are you kidding me? So 2 other bridemaids get their hair done by people that were not on our original booking, both terrible jobs and they have to redo their hair at the wedding venue. Then, I had prepaid for my mom and aunt to get there hair done as well. After all these screw ups this place has the nerve to make my mom pay the remainder of the bill to which they added fees for putting bobby pins in maid of honors hair. She told us "the manager told us, once you put a bobbypin in it is considered an updo" but didn't tell her during the time they were doing her hair. Then, my mom was supposed to get her makeup done there too. They dropped the ball everywhere else so we didn't want to stay. I specifically asked the receptionist if we could cancel the makeup appt without a fee to which she said yes. Then they charged me a fee later! They also charged me an extra blowout because one of my bridesmaids paid for hers separately. I have called 3 times since then and emailed twice to get a breakdown of charges so I can at least get the money back that I was overcharged. I am still waiting and come to find out my maid of honor wrote a yelp review about our terrible experience and the owner had the audacity to write a false response and still has not responded to my inquiry because they are too busy at the moment to help me! So in response to the owner: can you please get back to me since you have all this time to reply to a yelp review?! And I'll give the readers a clear picture of your salon: 1. Did not get the chosen/handpicked stylist I specifically asked three times (in person and twice on phone) if I could do this your apparently untrained staff told me I could do and still screwed up all my appointments so it is relevant. 2. The 10 am and 11 am appointments (2 appointments) were charged extra time Additional charges I was told I could remove before doing it, was again, by YOUR staff. Your newbie stylist who was not good at her job took an hour and half to do the most basic curls I have ever seen. We get penalized because you don't train staff enough and we were made late to our makeup appointments? Michelle told me should would remove the cancellation fee since your staff told me that was ok before I did it. And first of all - YES I was booked as a bridal party - that is what I told them from the very beginning when I booked months ago - and they said everything was the same anyways but we could bring in champagne if we wanted. As you can see, the way you run your business is terrible, you ruined the day, I'm still waiting for a response to my emails and calls and the bride was NOT happy with the service you provided and I will never go back there again! I hope this clarifies my concerns and prevents any other bride from making the same mistake I did in entrusting this business with your special day. I've been about 8+ times to this place because the choices in Oakland are limited, and every time the experience gets worse and worse. There is no hospitality and everything is just lacking. There are some stylists here that are nice, 1 in particular who I liked, but today was my last straw. I came in about 10 mins late and was assigned a stylist (6pm, 4/25 for reference). My stylist was SO annoyed that she got assigned someone and gave me a huge eye roll and a very passive aggressive hello, the vibe was just weird...so weird that the lady in the front looked over. I was going in to do my hair for an important event and the attitude was just so off putting that I left without getting my hair done. When I told the lady in the front that I was leaving because I was uncomfortable, she was just like ok...and did nothing to help and ask more. I'm disappointed in this place. There is Bibo on Broadway or Drybar in Walnut Creek, that are a bit further but also offer you a true experience..hospitality, better products, champagne, and finally good service. Definitely would love to give this place more stars, but I think the Oakland location could really benefit from some feedback. To future customers, don't expect any semblance of a scalp rub with your shampoo if you don't pay for the $10 upgrade. I get it, I didn't opt for the upgrade, but this isn't my first time having a stylist shampoo my hair and my scalp was not even touched during my wash. I wish I had loved my wash, I normally adore having my hair shampooed, but this was bare minimum. So just don't expect anything other than that unless you upgrade. When I walked in, there were 3-4 ladies at the front desk (huddled around the computer) who looked up at me. The main receptionist smiled and welcomed me in, but I don't think the other ladies realized that they just stared blankly at me. It just set such an off tone for my first impression upon walk-in. I think what really put me off was when the receptionist paired me up with my stylist, she just did not seem very enthused to work with me. I really wondered if she had thought, "dang it..." when she was chosen to take my appointment. One other small thing was that I had to put my purse on the floor - I asked where to put it and that was the answer. I'm not trying to be a purse snob, but there were hair balls blowing across the floor (I'm talking silver/gray hair, dark hair...) which grossed me out. (Note to self, don't put purse on my table at home after this). Anyway, my stylist turned out to be nice, not too conversational which I personally don't mind (I don't love socializing a ton, I'd rather relax), and she did a good job with my hair and styled it just as I had asked for. I definitely got the sucks-to-be-working vibe from the place though. The energy was just so low when I came in and throughout my appointment, I can't feel excited about this place. I have long, blonde, combination hair - it has ringlets, zig-zag curls, waves, straight sections, and it tends to frizz. The texture is very fine but I have a TON of hair, so you've got these fine strands but I have a pony tail that's the size of a quarter. What this means is that it takes skill, effort, and time to style. Washing, conditioning, and blow-drying my hair adds a good 45+ minutes to my morning routine, time that I am increasingly ill inclined to spend on my hair. Enter: the shampoo blowdry. Paying someone else to wash your hair and style it has got to be one of the most indulgent things you can do, but IDGAF: this is the life. I can spend 45 minutes and it'll come out looking meh, or I can spend 45 minutes (and some $$$) and it'll come out looking faboosh. And let me tell you, Zoe made my hair look (and feel!) amazing! Tousled, loose, beachy curls like I just stepped out of a photoshoot for Hawaiian Tropic. And it felt so soft! I had to stop myself from running my fingers through my hair over and over (don't want to transfer those oils onto my clean hair!). I was not satisfied with the outcome and the stylist didn't wear a mask. The next Wednesday, I contracted COVId and I am pretty sure I got it from her. Friday: Speaking at the memorial of Carolyn Saulson, close friend, community leader, creator in local African-American events such as Juneteenth, figuring prominently in the goth and rap idioms as a performer or a producer (yes, in both musical genres) and being half of a gothic act called Stagefright with her daughter, Sumiko. She wrote grants for low-income Bay Area artists, fixed computers, published books, and was an iconoclastically observant Christian. (Her org was even named Iconoclast, and it lives on.) This is to name a few of her loves, activities and accomplishments. Saturday: Performing at Carolyn's actual funeral, also at Chapel of the Chimes. I broke down crying but I finished my song, while looking awesome. I sang 'The Rose.' Sunday: Going out with Sumiko for my 51st birthday and kicking off her/our writer's group in SF at Wicked Grounds. Monday: Observing the birthday of one of my best friends, Natalya Fay, who passed several years prior. We used to celebrate our birthdays every year together at Cat Town. And I did it all with my hair looking bouncy and fabulous. read more
