Dear Yelpers - I think long and hard before I leave comments on Yelp. I realize that they have an impact on a business. And when the business is small or minority-owned, I am especially sensitive to what I report. I am only going to describe my expereince with this business and let you arrive at your own conclusion. And if you chose to proceed, at least you have one perspective. My hairdresser is retiring and I have been desperately looking for a "reliable", professional, and responsive stylist with expereince working with African-American hair (no small order)!. Read the reviews and decided to follow-up on this particular business ( However, I did notice there was a comment about the owner not answering the phone and the reviewer decided to go to the shop.) Well, I thought I would do the same. Went to the shop - during the hours posted as "Open." A customer who apparently was having her hair done - came to the door. Seemed to suggest that the owner wasn't there (??) and I explained why I was coming in person and said I would follow-up by phone. I noticed that the PHONE # WAS POSTED ON THE FRONT GLASS OF THE SHOP. Told the woman who answered the door, that I would call that number to discuss the feasibility of making an appointment. As it turns out, I had parked across the street and decided to just call right then and there. Well I called ! And the phone # was OUT-OF-ORDER ! Then to ensure I had the right number, I went to the website and yep - the number was the same. AND I CALLED AGAIN, TO BE SURE. And you guessed it - the phone was out of order. I got out of my car, went back to the salon, knocked on the door, the same customer answered. I told her that the number listed on the glass door and on the website was not working. I dialed it as I was talking to her so she could hear the voice saying it was a non-working #. She then started talking to "someone" (not visible) who apparently instructed her to tell me to make an appointment on-line. So here are the questions that bubbled up for me as I went thru this annoying expereince: Wasn't sure why the posted "number" is in fact NOT WORKING. Was the stylist in fact in the shop and chose not to come out to explain the discrepancy ? Is this the stylist way of screening customers by re-routing them to her on-line portal? Is this a precursor to how accessible a business will be? In conclusion, I decided not to follow-up. Please note that this review is not about service. This is how I found the fashionable and skilled hair stylists Makeda--I asked a woman I met at the Oakland Museum and she referred me! Makeda is beautiful, proud and low-key and extremely knowledgeable about hair.She is now my official 'hair-Mom!' Makeda is very serious about her profession. On my complimentary hair consultation, after carefully touching my hair, Makeda told me my hair type (4). Makeda also advised me to drink more water and that healthy eating was important! I've been trying to figure out what to do with my hair for the longest, and Toshia has been there to support my experiments every step of the way! From a press n' curl back in 2017, to edging me up while I maintained my own hair for a year, to doing a big chop last year, Toshia has been reliable, professional, and consistent in her service. Most recently, I REALLY appreciate her correcting a jacked up cut I got at the last minute. Thank God I'm looking cute again, now, and will continue to do so, as long as I make sure to make an appointment at least a week in advance. The only reason my rating is 4 stars and not 5, is that I am usually most successful with making appointments when I go into the shop. I've tried calling and booking online without success.
