I was staying at a nearby hotel and noticed this restaurant had a drive thru. After a long day of driving I didn't really want to dine in anywhere so a drive thru seemed like a great idea. The food is excellent! I ordered the artichoke and mushroom with Parmesan cheese sauce, potato salad, and Andy's Cajun Korn pudding. Portion sizes are very large! My entrée was large enough for two meals. The Cajun Korn pudding was a little spicy but not too much, mostly just good flavor. Potato salad was definitely unique, not like any other potato salad I have had before. Service was very friendly Although my experience today was strictly drive thru next time I will plan to dine in. This was our first time here and it was a great experience. I had never had étouffée before and when we were looking at the menu, they offered to let us try it before committing to a full order. The service was amazing and they were all so nice. I recommend upgrading and getting your dishes over the jambalaya. It was delicious. The corn pudding was very unique and had a spicy kick. My husband ordered the red beans with smoked sausage and the gumbo. He also said that was delicious. When you go in you order at the counter and then there are a lot of sauces to choose from to put over your dish if you like. I recommend the garlic hot sauce. AWESOME cajun food! We're not in New Orleans, so this is the best you can get in this area! One of the neat things about this place is you can have the best of two worlds with a half and half plate. I got red beans and smoked sausage and jambalaya with chicken and sausage. I really enjoyed the red beans and smoked sausage with plenty of seasoning and a nice even spice. I liked the jambalaya too, great rice, but I got one small shred of chicken in the whole serving. That being said, it was a late DoorDash order, so I doubt this is the norm. My colleagues had the jambalaya and chicken étouffée (brown pepper gravy and shredded chicken), and both enjoyed their selections. They also have black beans and sausage, white chili with chicken, etouffée with crawfish, as well as gumbo with chicken, sausage, and chicken. This place used to be legit. Not sure if it's the owner or employees but quality is horrible. The food with sauces across the board are way too thick. Seriously, why would anyone serve reheated flour paste as a sauce and expect repeat customers. Texture is very mealy and pasty. Chili is acceptable. The shrimp etouffee had a a fair amount of shrimp but the sauce ruined it. Last couple times here was the same. Probably won't try again . Not sure how they survive serving pasty gruel. Look at the other pics and it's not hard to tell this is not how Cajun(or any) food should look. Most show the overly thick paste I describe. First off, we originally tried to go to the downtown location and there was quite literally nowhere to park within a reasonable radius so we said "F-it" and went out to the suburbs. I'd suggest unless you live near downtown and can walk there, you absolutely are better off coming to this more suburban location with a reasonably large parking lot. You won't be sacrificing anything because the food was terrific and a ridiculously good deal. Most of the entrees come in either 1/2 portion ($7), full portion ($9) or you can get a plate of 2 different half portions for $10. A couple items have a buck or two extra charge but I wouldn't worry about that, seriously. My husband and I split a 1/2 & 1/2 of the southern etoufee with crawfish (one of the small surcharge items) and the jambalaya, and also got a side of the Cajun potato salad. It came out to about $14 and we still only managed to eat about 2/3 of it so we have enough for leftovers. But, while the low price is great, more importantly the food is seriously legit. I used to live in the greater New Orleans area and have eaten a lot of Cajun and Creole food and these recipes were on point. The gravy of the etouffee is thick, buttery, and savory. The jambalaya has exactly the flavor profile I'm used to and had lots of kick. The plate came with a couple good sized pieces of bread. The Cajun potato salad was also a winner, a mayo based red potato salad with a bit of (but not too much) cajun spice to give it extra flavor. It helps to cut the heat. I wish we'd tried the place earlier in the week and not on our last night because I would have loved to return and try the white chili (a dish I love but haven't had in so many years!) and some of the other options. The man at the cash register was delightful. I ordered Southwest crawfish étouffée. I requested a half-and-half; the other half was gumbo, and I ordered and paid for extra bread. The southwest étouffée had one piece of shrimp, no crawfish at all whatsoever, and it was a tiny portion of salty, black gummy stuff over a small portion of plain rice. The gumbo had four little shrimps, but was quite tasty. It was a very small portion over a small scoop of plain rice. The breads pieces were plain day-old bread with a dab of garlic butter on one corner. For this, I paid $13 plus tip, because the man at the crash register was so delightful. read more

Great experience with trying Boubon n' Toulouse. They do have limited vegan options, offering two options, the Jackfruit sandwich with vegan coleslaw and the vegan blackbeans, so I tried both :-). They did offer tofu creole but there was not a big demand for it. I would love to see another vegan option with tofu. I was advised that the owners were vegan, so I am hoping more options will make it to the menu. The vegan black beans were yummy, I added the vegan coleslaw to my blackbeans, as the slaw was spicier than expected, but the blackbeans helped mellow out the spice. I had not tried Jackfruit before trying the Jackfruit sandwich, but it was a nice, hearty sandwich with great flavor. The bread was crispy, yet moist with a nice chew. Overall, the food was great and the staff were very warm and very helpful with advising of dishes that would suit my diet. Also, there is Ale 8 on tap. Oh, how I love coming back to KY! Definitely, no Ale 8 on tap in DC!! There was a steady crowd of patrons, which you can deduce was due to the awesome food and service. The bread was buttered to perfection and delicious (I know they get it from a local bakery). Also get the 1/2 & 1/2 plates so you can try a little of everything. I ordered the chicken etouffee and the gumbo. They had a little spice to them but everything was delicious. The picture looks messy but amazing. Even though I didn't go there and ordered it out the little note on the bag had me laughing (which I really needed that day) so thank you to that person. I came by today for a late lunch since I've heard so many things about this place from coworkers and people whom I've met from Lexington. The interior is a funky vibe, and lots of decoration on every wall and corner of this place; there are plenty of tables and seats if you want to dine. As for me, I ordered takeout to eat in my car (lol). [I brought my dog with me, and I hate leaving him in the car or sitting outside since it is much hotter today compared to the last few days' weather]. I ordered the restaurant's famous chicken etouffee and a Diet Coke. I was not as hungry as I thought, but I wanted to try this place. The etouffee was good but needed more rice and protein in it. I mostly had the sauce and less meat, which I looked forward to more protein as I ordered a full plate. This is a new location for Bourbon n' Toulouse, and plenty of parking spots are nearby. The second location of Bourbon n' Toulouse is a better spot for a lunch on the go, as it's a bit easier to park at. Ordering online is easy, and this is the kind of food that is mostly already made and just requires a final touch. They have decent vegetarian options, and I split an order between black beans and tofu. This comes with a ton of white rice and some very tasty garlic bread, as most of their orders do. It is a New Orleans type of flavor (though I am not a Bourbon Street person and I am not aware of anything of note at the intersection of Bourbon and Toulouse), and cheap, carb-heavy takeout in a styrofoam container is the sort of thing you'd expect to get there. read more

I just cannot come back to Lexington without going to one of two cajun spots: Gumbo-Yaya or Bourbon n Toulouse. There's a lot of history at this specific location. Many years ago, around the late 90s, there was a cajun place called Yats (now Gumbo Ya-ya) at South Hill Station (which I think has been converted to an office building) off S Lime, near UK campus (back in the day, there was a textbook place, CD Central, Collectibles Etc, a coffee shop, a sandwich spot called Claim Jumpers (no relation to the chain) and Laser Quest). Yats was amazing food and great prices. Fast forward to many years later, Yats became Gumbo Ya-ya and opened up in this exact location where Bourbon n'Toulouse currently resides. For folks that went to Yats back in the day, the bar on the side should be very familiar. On this most recent trip back to KY, I found out Gumbo Ya-ya sold this location (or closed) and a worthy successor has taken over this spot. I've been to Bourbon n' Toulouse @ Chevy Chase and it's solid food. In some respects, there are things it does better than Gumbo Ya-ya (although TBH I still call it Yats). In terms of vegan options, hands down better. The options are a little better because I can get food over jambalaya if I want. They don't have Maque Choux (I think that's how it's spelled), which is probably my absolute favorite from Yats/Gumbo ya-ya, but they have excellent etouffee. In fact, on this day they had 4 options: shrimp, chicken, crawfish, and I think this day their special was a garlic chicken (or southwest chicken, can't remember). They were cool with me sampling all 4 and I ended up doing the crawfish and the special chicken over jambalaya. I didn't take a picture because I just devoured my food, but I'm sure the other pictures on yelp give you enough idea. I think my meal was about $13-14, but it also came with buttered french bread. And it was a LOT of food! Honestly this could've fed 2 people and in LA, this would've probably been about $20. I'm sad that Gumbo Ya-ya isn't here (and the only location is pretty far from where I usually stay when in town) but I'm glad Bourbon n' Toulouse took over. My eyes are way bigger than my stomach and even though I knew that a half serving would be more than enough I ordered the full and as though that wasn't enough I got extra bread!
